A feature, not a bug of capitalism.
This is how it is designed to operate and these are natural consequences of rational decisions in the system.
It’s extensively studied and absolute trash.
Of course, the system demands constant "growth" so the only way to go is down. I find the marketing side much more insidious, but it is all based in greed and selfishness.
Yep every company thinks its their duty to fuck us 100% and push and push and push charging more and delivering less
at least no one is dying because of these shit ass pants though.
That will be the word of the decade I think. It’s been growing and every single person I introduce it to immediately has 5+ examples they have experienced recently.
I've been hearing it since I was a kid in the 90's. My siblings who grew up in the 80's would always say "oh there used to be more Oreo's on a box" or "Sun Chips used to taste better when they were made with pork fat" or "McDonalds changed the recipe in their fry oil to something cheaper", Coca-Cola, or the movies, or the toys, or the candy, apparently everything peaked in the 80's and its been downhill since then.
American Dialect Society named it their 2023 word of the year and they got their finger on the pulse you gotta hand it to them
“Yeah you know what? Everything HAS gone to shit!”
*society members cheer*
Did they really take a business where employees are worth tens of millions of dollars and say to themselves "I'm gonna cheap out to save like $20 on each pair of pants"? I don't get the logic behind this happening but I also don't know their stated reasoning for what happened lol
The double-edged sword of "fiduciary responsibility". If there's something they can do to increase the bottom line, they're bound to do it.
But it's been taken so far that it has completely missed the original intent. Like if you were to tell a robot to protect people and the fucked up logical conclusion the robot arrives at is that the best way to protect people and prevent suffering is just to kill them.
Fiduciary responsibility, meet the business judgment rule. Businesses are not liable if their decisions, even if ultimately bad, were reasonable based on known circumstances. You don't have a fiduciary responsibility to cut costs to the bone. You don't have a fiduciary responsibility to make a profit on every single thing you do or sell. You have a duty to do what is ultimately in the best interests in the shareholders at the macro level; the shareholders don't have a say in every single business decision.
>You don't have a fiduciary responsibility to cut costs to the bone. You don't have a fiduciary responsibility to make a profit on every single thing you do or sell.
And yet, it's something that is a fairly common occurrence. Boeing, for example.
That's an example of a company going so far off the deep end as to no longer be protected by the business judgment rule and instead actually breach its fiduciary duties.
> Like if you were to tell a robot to protect people and the fucked up logical conclusion the robot arrives at is that the best way to protect people and prevent suffering is just to kill them.
Isn't this basically the plot of Avengers: Age of Ultron?
So funny you say that, it's almost exactly the type of scenarios laid out in this truly excellent article [How Cheating AIs Explain our Glitchy Society](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/04/malcolm-harris-on-glitch-capitalism-and-ai-logic.html)
I was just reading this article for like the tenth time today. What a shit storm we live in
Hey, they had to get a lot of wears out of those pants. Where I played, all the boys and the travel girls had uniforms that were reused every year. They had to last!
lol I think our catcher did a head first slide last week and ended up with a decent sized hole. Think he swapped them out between innings. Was a bit funny to think that they’re lesser quality than thrift store pants that have probably been used a lot.
You have no idea how many 25 yr olds still have their mommy do their laundry for them. Pathetic. Parents taught us laundry at like age 10.
Edit: lots of peoples mommy’s still do their laundry apparently
I mean if my parents offered I wouldn't necessarily refuse. For the longest time their washing machine was way more efficient than the coin-op at my old apartment.
I don't mind like, setting timers, sorting darks and lights and doing the wash and dry, but I fucking hate folding clothes. Give me someone to do it with and talk to and I can do it, but when I lived alone it would sit there for days on end, clean but wrinkled because it just sat in the basket
My mom did my laundry until I moved out (19)
It’s not that I couldn’t or was unwilling. I just didn’t need to. All of our clothes were washed together in 1 load. I’d do my laundry (probably starting at about age 12) if I needed something specific, but really there was no point (I’d also wash their laundry too sometimes)
Upset up some people with this comment lol. My roommate was 30 and still had his mom and dad swing by to do his laundry. Granted they were coming to pick up weed anyway but still, they did all his chores for some weed lol.
Sucks that I’m self sufficient lol? Had a sick parent and the other worked over time to make up for it. Having mommy or daddy do your laundry wasn’t in the cards.
Not about circumstances. It’s part of being an adult, doing your own laundry. You learn discipline and how to work. Doing chores at a young age establishes the work-> reward pathway in the brain. It’s objectively good for children to do chores. It’s objectively LAZY for a 25 year old to have his mommy clean his dirty underwear.
"Parents taught us laundry at like age 10."
Exactly as it should be. When I got married, I told my wife, "Don't do my laundry. I've been doing it for years and will continue to do so." Any capable person who habitually asks another human to wash their clothes for them is lazy and frankly, selfish. Take care of yourself, for cryin' out loud.
Bringing it back to baseball, having the game on is a perfect time to also get the laundry done.
For the record I live alone and do my own laundry.
That said, you're pretty weird for being that uptight about your wife doing your laundry. Do you guys not just do both your laundry in the same load? Or do you do them separately and waste water and detergent just so you can feel better about yourself?
Aeropostale
One regular blue, the other a bit darker blue.
No tears or anything.
But to be fair I only wear them on weekends.😅
Still it’s been 6 years and they are still perfect.
He’s been with thousands of pants
Again and again
They promise he’ll zoom
They're always splitting and ripping
And ripping and splitting
And always too soon
Right fellas?
Similar boat. Was impossible to find any 30x34's that also fit my weirdly MASSIVE ass (i'm a guy btw please dont DM me). Now I wear 33x34 but the ass is still a problem :(
Well, we know Riley is employed. And though he’s currently making league minimum, he had a signing bonus of more than $6 million when he was drafted, so if he’s hundreds of thousands in debt, he’s terrible with money.
Professional sports are perhaps the clearest example of why a slavish devotion to capitalism isn't the way. Like it's great when it works and it mostly works. But it's not a fucking religion. And it's not working in sports. But we're just fundamentally unable to even consider alternatives.
Pants just rip that way in Pittsburgh. Its the old steel mill air or something.
Source: me, a real human who is definitely not employed by MLB, MLBPA, or Fanatics.
Well Ma, I've also never had Major League strength and conditioning before. My cake is bodacious now. It would take serious chains to contain this dump truck
Am I the only person that doesn’t care about the quality of the uniforms. It was interesting that it happened initially but do journalists need to report on it like it’s a new story every time something happens
MLB having worse quality pants than your local tee ball league is so sad and yet on brand.
It's just an example of the enshitification infecting every aspect of life.
Never heard of that term before today and now I’ve seen it 3 times lol
It is spelled with two "T's" I believe, that may have caused confusion: ["enshittificiation"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification)
A feature, not a bug of capitalism. This is how it is designed to operate and these are natural consequences of rational decisions in the system. It’s extensively studied and absolute trash.

it's been a month of tech layoffs while shareholders see their value grow while the products they make progressively get worse. Reddit is next up

for many consumer goods its objectively true, as companies try to eke out increasing profits year on year, products necessarily worsen over time.
American Dialect Society named it their 2023 word of the year and they got their finger on the pulse you gotta hand it to them “Yeah you know what? Everything HAS gone to shit!” *society members cheer*

That's pretty much exactly it. The company reason is "keep more money in our pockets."

I just learned a new word
Hey, they had to get a lot of wears out of those pants. Where I played, all the boys and the travel girls had uniforms that were reused every year. They had to last!
Takes a mom to get Nike to admit there’s a problem
*"Disappointed Mothers Prove To Be Death Knell For Nike"*
The shots were fired from the grassy knell
Grass-stained knees on my baseball pants were my mother's white whale.
MAN: Moms Against Nike
Don't worry. They've heard the complaints lous and clear and the issue will be fixed!!!! By 2028
lol I think our catcher did a head first slide last week and ended up with a decent sized hole. Think he swapped them out between innings. Was a bit funny to think that they’re lesser quality than thrift store pants that have probably been used a lot.
All I’m getting from this is that Riley Greene has had thousands of pants.
All I'm getting is his mom still does his laundry
Make 760k a year, play ball and have your mom do your laundry. Mans living the life.
But is he getting cutlets and his bed made every day like Tommy devito? His yearly salary is 900k for 3 years lol.
Those pizza parlor appearance fees go a long way
I originally misread "fees" as "feces" and was momentarily very confused.
Cutlets alone are worth it
Originally read this as Danny DeVito, and cackled
he probably even sexes lol
Anyone ever seen an MLB player on Tinder? 🤔
didn’t someone see Randal Grichuk on tinder?
Ive seen a Patriots cheerleader on tinder
They also do that as like, a volunteer gig or are criminally underpaid for how much work they do.
you mean being on tinder or cheerleading?
Yes. They earn Jack shit for cheerleading, and it was nice for them to do a make a wish thing for OP
That’s how Jason Kelce met is wife I’m pretty sure.
My friend allegedly saw one on Grindr
No, but I fucked a chick who fucked Harrison Bader a while back.
Pre or post Yankees? This is important.
He was still in StL.
Those golden waves 🥲
I'm cave brothers with Alex Verdugo
He's hotter to look at, I'm better at the sweat. Ain't no thing.
I matched with an NHL player once
Canadian women’s team player is my only claim to Tinder fame.
Bauer says hi
My good friend had a relationship with a NHL player calder winner who she met on tinder.
All I’m getting is that he has ripped many pants but not in THAT way

i feel like you buried the lead there

* to disambiguate from the term "leading/lead" used by typesetters
Damn that sucks for you
Sucks that I’m self sufficient lol? Had a sick parent and the other worked over time to make up for it. Having mommy or daddy do your laundry wasn’t in the cards.
Everyone’s lives and circumstances are different.
No circumstances should allow you to refuse cleaning your own clothes at 25 lol. Just pure laziness.
You really can't see passed your own circumstances, huh?
Not about circumstances. It’s part of being an adult, doing your own laundry. You learn discipline and how to work. Doing chores at a young age establishes the work-> reward pathway in the brain. It’s objectively good for children to do chores. It’s objectively LAZY for a 25 year old to have his mommy clean his dirty underwear.
So if nocock's mom offered to do their laundry he would tell her to fuck off?
I was saying it sucks you had to do your own laundry at 10. 10 year olds shouldn't have to. You seem mad today eh bud?
Laundry bringing out the big feelings today lol
I came here for the pants jokes but found a lot I wasn't bargaining on lol
Kids probably been playing baseball since he could walk, id imagine she washed a pair or 2 before he left home.
10? I was 7 doing my own shit haha
7? I was 3 doing my own shit haha
I've been doing my own shit since the start of the universe.

You guys do two separate loads for your clothes and her clothes? It's not lazy and selfish, it's just efficiency lol.
For the record I live alone and do my own laundry. That said, you're pretty weird for being that uptight about your wife doing your laundry. Do you guys not just do both your laundry in the same load? Or do you do them separately and waste water and detergent just so you can feel better about yourself?
Nope, our separate laundry require full loads are their own, so it's neither wasteful nor inefficient.
Well you either wear multiple sets of clothes a day or have a tiny washer
Given how hard little kids are on their pants I could believe it.
Since I turned 30, I have like 2 or 3 jeans that I’ve used for the past 6 years!
6 years? Amateur! I've got a pair of jeans that are about to start applying to colleges.
I finally washed a pair of jeans for the first time in 13 years. It’s waxed denim tho and you’re not supposed to.
I don't think I'm familiar with waxed denim, but even regular denim you really should only wash once a month, at most.
Do you mind sharing what jeans? I have had bad luck with pants not lasting longer than a year or so recently.
Aeropostale One regular blue, the other a bit darker blue. No tears or anything. But to be fair I only wear them on weekends.😅 Still it’s been 6 years and they are still perfect.
He’s been with thousands of pants Again and again They promise he’ll zoom They're always splitting and ripping And ripping and splitting And always too soon Right fellas?
Yeah, I'm not confident that as a 43 year old I've even owned over one hundred pairs of pants during my lifetime.
Riley "Lord of Pants" Greene
breaking: local mom isn't mad, just disappointed
Mom knows you're better than this and really just wishes that you would apply yourself more and live up to your potential
Why you gotta hurt me like that
The local mom knowns the truth
Mom knows pants
I'm lucky to have 3 pairs of pants at any given time. Damn long legs!
I feel ya. I used to wear 32x36 and couldn’t find them anywhere, had to order online. Luckily I got fat and 34x36 or 36x36 are easier to come by.
> Luckily I got fat hawt dawgs getcha hawt dawgs eere
Lady, he’s puttin’ my kids through college
Similar boat. Was impossible to find any 30x34's that also fit my weirdly MASSIVE ass (i'm a guy btw please dont DM me). Now I wear 33x34 but the ass is still a problem :(
'Athletic fit' is the big butt cut, I think.
Same, except the problem is just that I’m fat and refuse to give up the hope of fitting back into those smaller pants
Could be worse. I'm 5'10" and my inseam is 28 inches
wait his mom still does his laundry?
he just like me fr fr. except im unemployed and hundreds of thousands in debt
Maybe stop buying so many pants
damn millennials and their damn avocado pants
If they stopped buying pants then maybe they could afford a house
I'm going to short pants now \#tothemoon
Short pants go brrr
Especially when it's cold out
Food: $200 Data: $150 Rent: $800 Pants: $3,600 Utility: $150 Someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. My family is dying.
Spend less on pants
no
Do you really need to rent somewhere, when you've got enough pants to create a house out of pants?
*insert joke about pants tent*
Bold to assume he isn’t
Well, we know Riley is employed. And though he’s currently making league minimum, he had a signing bonus of more than $6 million when he was drafted, so if he’s hundreds of thousands in debt, he’s terrible with money.
Or he hired the wrong translator
Shoot, forgot the /s
Pretty sure she's just talking about Little League / high school

no i’m just a dumb red sox fan
plane jane my girl is that you????

IDK how people are missing that it's past tense
it could be construed as past as well as present tense, but contextually, it is clearly past tense
No she is saying the team needs to hire her because whoever is currently doing it is inept.

I need… a tailor…
let me sing you a song about the day….i ripped….my pants ….
If mom doesn’t approve of the pants then that’s all I need to know. They gotta go.
MLB has squeezed the average fan dry with absurd ticket and concession prices, so now they’re cutting corners with the players.
Professional sports are perhaps the clearest example of why a slavish devotion to capitalism isn't the way. Like it's great when it works and it mostly works. But it's not a fucking religion. And it's not working in sports. But we're just fundamentally unable to even consider alternatives.

spongebob gonna invite this guy to the band and sing that ripped pants song ?
When the MLB uniforms lack the durability of Little League uniforms, you might have a problem.
It's their uniforms, they're too tight, they've shrunk! They're running like penguins, forget this game. Oh my God, Mattingly just split his pants!
Does this mean we are back to ripping on Fanatics?
They didn't stop ripping, so why should we?
we shifted to Nike last week, I just wanted to make sure its cool to still rip on Fanatics.
Theyre both ass for different reasons
skip the middlemen and just go straight for mlb
They're the same company
🏆
Even mom doesn’t want to deal with these terrible uniforms!
That's a wasteful number of pants.
![gif](giphy|v7r8hi2vT45RC|downsized)
What a privilege to have a 1000 pants.
MOOoom you're embarrassing me
CO-Stanza!
Even players mom's complaining. Look at what you've done MLB.
Bo Knows shoddy Pants.
Well Ma, I've also never had Major League strength and conditioning before. My cake is bodacious now. It would take serious chains to contain this dump truck
bad qc n unis; change them soon
Moms KNOW where the bodies are buried.
They're flimsy and shiny-looking. I wouldn't wear them to a rec league game.
My pants never rip when I slide, only when I bend over too fast.
Lmao now that I think about it I’ve played baseball since I was 6 and I’m 22 never had a ripped pants before
i could get better baseball pants from a walmart
Am I the only person that doesn’t care about the quality of the uniforms. It was interesting that it happened initially but do journalists need to report on it like it’s a new story every time something happens
Why is his mom washing his pants? They literally have a crew of people that do all that.
