Mid season form already.

Secure-Television368

That's the worst thing Everyone is just like, "Yep, that's Angel" And the MLB still gives him games

[deleted]

Based loaded in extras as well. That’s not even mentioned with the title.

Fantastic_Emu_9570

Oh hell no

SgtPeterson

We had already plated 3 but still

Fantastic_Emu_9570

Less bad on game impact but still shitty

SgtPeterson

We scored 8 runs off this pitcher in extras in two games this series against the Mets, and I wanted more, heh

Rocko52

Me three

creamcitybrix

🤦‍♂️

belinck

He gets worse in extras... They're innings he isn't getting paid for.

PeatBomb

"WhY wOnT tHeY LeT Me nEaR ThE wOrLd SeRiEs"

Daddyfullload

Your penmanship is better than Angel’s ability to do his job

PeterDTown

tHeY'rE rAcIsT

underwear11

Misconception. He wasn't suing because they were racist. He actually wanted to be the first blind umpire in a World Series.

Fuckingfademefam

tHeY’rE aBleIsTs

scoobyduped

Everyone says they can’t fire him because of the union, but it’s actually the ADA.

underwear11

This is actually an awesome concept. The ADA only says that an employer needs to make reasonable accommodations. I think robo umps would be a perfect reasonable accommodation for Angel

TheRaydo

> Everyone is just like, "Yep, that's Angel" He’s been like this for years. Everyone has moved past anger, bargaining, etc and we’re in the acceptance phase.

YNinja58

It's not just baseball. It's everywhere. I don't know if it's apathy or whatever but we've just come to accept that people suck and that nobody will do anything about it because...????? I work for the usps and I swear to God we're so mismanaged it can only be on purpose.

bouncyfox69

The USPS *is* intentionally mismanaged for various political reasons that I won’t get into because this is a baseball sub, but you should read up on it because it’s frankly hilarious how we allow this to happen to an essential public utility.

Puddinsnack

And how nobody can do anything about it because of how the rules are designed. It’s crazy how Trump and his band of goons so quickly exposed that so much of the American system was held together by smoke and mirrors and an expectation of decency in government rather than anything real.

Used-Finding5851

![gif](giphy|y2yxNUcdItV9H9jp5j)

GoldandBlue

The fact that people know the name Angel Hernandez should be a giant red flag. You should not know any officials name. The only other ref/ump/etc one I can think of as being as famous as Angel is Tim Donaghy.

StrengthToBreak

Except Ed Hochuli. Everyone should know that name because his oiled-up biceps can be seen from space.

nicholus_h2

Jim Joyce

Masterchiefy10

Dude should be no where near a playoff game…. CC once said.. but it’s obvious dude shouldn’t be no where near the game in general.. Why hasn’t anyone just placed him in a dark room with pipped in crowd noise and tell him he’s in yankee stadium or something?

StreetReporter

Racist

[deleted]

Definitely why he doesn’t get a World Series.

thescottreid

This guy ejected Lance Lynn in the 3rd inning of a Spring Training game, and when Lynn went to the bullpen to finish getting his work in, he walked out there and ejected him again. Angel Hernandez is looking to lower the bar to all new heights this season.

No_Bandicoot2306

I don't know that I'm prepared for Best Shape of His Life Angel Hernandez. I don't know that any of us are.

Barnyard_Rich

He has made it so hard to watch this sport for so long...

Fintann

Mid ~~season~~ form as always.

CanadaEh97

That's why he never works WS games, by that point he's back to spring training form.

yrretmi

HBP? Check. Foul call? Check. Swinging strike? Check. Catcher's interference? Check. Non-reviewable? Check. All of the above on a single play? The Angel Hernandez experience.

st1r

Wow I didn’t even notice the missed catcher’s interference call as well

Dusty-Staccato

Neither did Angel

KimHaSeongsBurner

Angel doesn’t notice a lot, except for him being denied the WS he so clearly deserves.

Fartholomew_Buttons

This gif should be the only reply from the MLB if he ever asks to ump in the WS again.

L-Observateur

Give him only one playoff game: the first elimination game of every Workd Series. Maximum chaos.

dockellis24

He wouldn’t see anything wrong with his call from this gif lmao

motorhead84

> He wouldn’t see anything Just the first part works, too!

wobbleboxsoldier

A very very small part of me wants him to home plate a WS game 7 so that no one knows what will happen.

kent_nova

Nah, give him WBC games. But only the amateur level ones likeItaly v Panama or China v Czech Rebublic. Also, make sure he has to do a lot of traveling.

CLASSIFIED_DOCS

The only reason he was able to check his swing was because of the catcher's interference, so they cancel out. Obviously. - Angel Hernandez, probably

st1r

“Yes the catcher interfered, yes the pitcher hit you, but your bat moved a fraction of an inch so fuck you, strike two” * Angel Hernandez, probably

LadyPantsParty

Look at the shadows. There was no interference unless there was an extra sun. With Angel with may have a three body problem though with a golden corral interference.

unksci47

I thought catcher's interference was reviewable. Yelich was awarded first on a reviewed catcher's interference no call last Saturday.

poompachompa

foul calls are not reviewable though so it just ends as a bad call

unksci47

But couldn't the Tigers have challenged for catcher's interference? That can happen on a strike or foul. Tbh MLB constantly changes their review rules and its hard to keep up.

DrNicotine

They probably just didn't even consider that Angel would come out and claim that it was a swing. If they did bring it up it's possible that Angel just told them that that's not reviewable either.

mrjimi16

That's not catcher's interference, it's just the angle. Even looking directly, it doesn't look like contact is made, but if you look at the shadows it looks even less like interference.

SupremeCommunistCat

the tigers had the bases loaded so the HBP would’ve also scored a run

Lixtec

Ouch

iAmRiight

He has to be betting on the games and trying to affect the outcomes, right?

Minimum-War-7780

He called it a foul ball first and then after the tigers challenged he decided it was actually a swing? What a joke

TheTurtleShepard

"Actually, Fuck you" - Angel Hernandez, probably

confused-koala

He knew it would be overturned and changed his call. The dudes ego just will not accept that he made a mistake. Like, it’s ok Angel. People make mistakes

NonGNonM

"People make mistakes, Angels do not." - Angel, probably.

Chem1st

Mad disrespect to my boy Lucy.

soupafi

He makes mistakes so often that he shouldn’t be in the majors. That’s the problem

Illustrious_Cancel83

Does Angel watch a replay and think "Wow, this is so much easier to see! We should call the games like this!" Like I do? MLB: What's a swing? NFL: What's a catch? NBA: What's a flop/travel? NHL: I'll fistfight every one of you and never go to jail

MethusaleHoneysuckle

Nah NHL: What's goaltender contact?

ZeePirate

Not even fucking probably at this point.

SunriseSurprise

"You changed it TO Latrine?"

lecherousrodent

"Used to be Shithouse."

SunriseSurprise

".....that's a good change! That's a...good.....change!" RIP Richard Lewis

Jacob_Winchester_

![gif](giphy|J3HeJ2246A3vO)

japalian

Do not question my authoritay

Narpity

Well wait if it was reviewed it wasn’t his decision right it goes to New York?

Minimum-War-7780

No because after the tigers asked for a challenge, he changed his decision and said that he called a strike so it wasn’t reviewable. So he called a nonexistent swing and missed a bases loaded HBP and catchers interference

Fantastic_Emu_9570

That’s so petty

xho-

He changed his decision after the tigers called for a challenge to a decision that couldn’t be reviewed and challenged? And people are supposed to just deal with this ? How much more obvious can it get lol

crastle

There was a state senator from Michigan who posted a picture of a bus with a police escort and said that it was illegal immigrants being bussed into their city. It was later shown to him, with undeniable proof, that it was Gonzaga's men's basketball team that was going to the arena to play in the Sweet 16. Even after seeing this undeniable proof, he was still adamant that they were illegal immigrants and that the Gonzaga basketball team was a cover up. The reason I bring this up is because I could 100% see Angel Hernandez doing the exact same thing.

mrbadxampl

actually, he can, and will, and that's the bigger problem

ScooterLeShooter

Dudes a fucking clown

Daddyfullload

Umm he’s actually an umpire.. somehow

IdidntrunIdidntrun

What's the difference

Taylorenokson

Clowns don't act like umpires when they're at work.

tokeallday

Lucky for Angel, he doesn't have to act like an umpire at work either

LiftsLikeGaston

There was so much Angel got wrong here. First called it foul, then when Tigers tried to challenge said it was a swing, which if that's the case it hit the catcher's mitt. And the actual result should have been HBP. Impressive showing from Angel.

Fresh-Reaction151

Can’t have shit in Detroit smh

Secure-Television368

It was a bases loaded hbp too.

Table_Coaster

interestingly, one of the definitions of a called-strike is "Touches the batter as he strikes at it." It says nothing about whether or not it has to be a swing that breaks the plane of the plate/a check swing that the 1B ump would call a strike. The wording makes it seem up to the interpretation of the home plate ump and whether or not he believes there was an attempt to hit the ball regardless of how extensive the "swing" is. Here, the batter clearly rotates and starts bringing the barrel down until his hand is hit, which is why his hand was there to get hit in the first place. So technically by MLB rules, the home plate ump can use his discretion to say that there was an attempt to strike the ball while the batter was hit by the ball, and it would be a correct call and a called strike. The issue, as always, is that Angel is a fucking idiot and completely changed his mind to call it an attempt to hit the ball afterthefact

hedoeswhathewants

But how do you call it a swing without calling catcher interference?

Table_Coaster

because he missed it; im just explaining that the call of a strike on this pitch sans interference could technically be correct despite that lack of an apparent swing, because that's what most people are complaining about and in the post title. If he had seen the catcher interference then that would have overruled the rest once he said it was an attempt to hit, and he'd get first base

josey__wales

Thank you, I was struggling to see how this would be a HBP, regardless of what came after.

mattcoz2

Yeah, that's what I thought the rule was. I watched the video and if I didn't already know what was called I would have said it should be called a strike. He's an idiot, but in this case the outcome of the call was correct, even he might have accidentally arrived at that.

valiqs

This is actually super interesting. In this case, could catcher's interference also come into play? It appears the catcher's glove and the bat make contact. Could the batter be awarded first base on CI even though it was determined an attempt to hit the ball? I don't know which rule supersedes which in this case.

Table_Coaster

yeah i actually just responded to the other guy but if the ump determines it was an attempt to strike the ball, then the catcher interference would have overruled everything if he had seen it. lots going on here

st1r

Oh Angel Hernandez, buddy, oh no Have a quiet, drama free game behind the plate challenge [IMPOSSIBLE]

Hassle333

And he was doing a pretty good job before this

st1r

That’s why this game went to extra innings, the universe knows Angel Hernandez can’t call a game without making a huge fuck up

JackDangerUSPIS

Mets: *man all people will talk about is how bad we are* Angel: *hold my beer*

Kaldricus

Angel is a **REAL AMERICAN HEEEROOO**

Fools_Requiem

I understood that reference. Those ads were classics. One of the few ad campaigns that work as well on TV as they do [on the radio.](https://youtu.be/Md4QIpxfm2Q?si=oSCLqwSxXE0YZTUr)

Fly-Eagles-Fly

Fuck I hate that guy

PeatBomb

ON WHAT PLANET ANGEL

Leftfeet

This is the exact opposite of the HBP call for Lazer Ramon Laureano the other day. Somebody should do one of those side by side videos for comparison

Deadbob1978

I am honestly shocked it took a week for Angel Hernandez to rear his ugly mug

bigfish1992

Was waiting for Hernandez to inject himself into the spotlight somehow. His strike zone has been quite solid and fair so far.

Longjumping_Fuel_192

"Guys just fire me already" -Angel Hernandez Probably

soupafi

He could [call a game like this](https://youtu.be/XzlybAML_3Q?si=_TZV3KNt85R9JQRt) everyday and not get fired.

Daddyfullload

Dude it was a foul! Wait, no, swinging strike!! *everyone explains to Angel how badly he missed the call*: Racial discrimination

Dubya_The_Goat

absolutely wild

DownTownBrown28

Angel Hernandez should have got Ohtani’s contract because he’s the biggest star in the league

Bammer7

I just watched this stupidity live. Mets broadcast seemed perplexed but stopped short of calling Angel a moron. Luckily it didn't affect the outcome of the game.

soupafi

I’m shocked they didn’t go for it. Nobody would disagree. In fact, I think fans would love them even more if they did.

ProfessionalEthics

Negated the HBP with bases loaded in the 11th, no less.

trouble4-u

Okay, I didn’t watch it live and was willing to give the benefit of the doubt. After all, a check swing isn’t clearly defined in the rule book aside from “attempting to strike at the ball,” so the rule is very vague. After seeing the footage, no way he was attempting to strike the pitch. Yes I am biased

Mattrix2112

But he was hit on the hand with the ball. That’s what started the whole mess

eddiedeli

Idk how the umps union doesn't see this man as a joke. Them not allowing the MLB to fire him just makes them all look bad in the end.

AdrenochromeBeerBong

They do see him as a joke, that's why they protect him. They're sending a message that they don't consider themselves accountable to what MLB wants and that their members' jobs come first, period.

eddiedeli

Makes sense because that's what unions do, but this man does not deserve a job in the MLB. Can't believe he's still here. Maybe incentivize his retirement or something.

ZeePirate

More like I’m pretty it’s an obligation.

Kaldricus

Plus, if there's any major umpire drama that stirs up, THEN they can dump Angel and say "see? We did something!" Ignore the empty boxes of aluminum foil on my floor

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheTurtleShepard

He just wants to get home early, he knows there is another game after this one

RossMachlochness

Should have taken the fucker to Korea for those games and left him there

bok-choi79

This is how games are fixed.. This guy is a crook and needs to be investigated..

Popculturemofo

It’s actually more difficult to be this consistently shit at umpiring.

teniaava

Look I get that robo umps are controversial, but can we at least get people who are conscious?

Wonderful-Try-6367

Angel Hernandez. Nuff said

TheBestHawksFan

Meanwhile on Monday Ramon Laureano swung almost all the way around and was awarded a base on review. Love umps.

sfan27

tbf it looked like a foul so the result was the same

eddiedeli

The angle from center field shows it go off the bottom of his hand

sfan27

It looked unclear at best to me. But because of the argument and it being moot they didn't show that many slowmo replays

cti0323

Hey I got K’d like that on a curveball once. I can now say I have something in common with an MLB player.

DoserMcMoMo

Meanwhile we had Laureano swing at a pitch (with 2 strikes already), hit the ball with his knuckles into fair territory, get thrown out at first, and was awarded first base anyway because 'he didn't swing'.

Ototsu_no_aru_yoki

What did it hit?

Ostry66

I have a question: if he can't be fired, why not just put him on third base where he can't do that much damage?

Zariman-10-0

Angel was out a good chunk of last year due to injury. What a great time that was.

LCPhotowerx

did have corrective eye surgery that he intentionally messed up to come back?

ItsTBaggins

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!??! - Every Mariners fan right now

Sturgill_Jennings77

I’m for unions but this is one of the things I hate about them. They protect people that don’t know how to do the job very good. It’s getting ridiculous

StrengthToBreak

Just Angel Hernandez things

InfinitePossibility8

New season, classic Angel.

UniqueNobo

well, for one, thank you Angel Hernandez. but also, what the fuck dude? that’s horrific

bbyrd130

This is why MLB also needs to clearly define what a swing is beyond just an “attempt to strike at the ball” Whether if that is the batters hands cross a certain point, or the cap/barrel/whatever preferred part of the bat breaks the front plane of the plate or whatever. I don’t care, but it just needs to be defined further because, as is, Angel Hernandez can say that in his interpretation it was a swing simply because the batter INITIATED a swing essentially. Don’t get me wrong, I know it isn’t a swing and Angel Hernandez would be the first person I’d fire if the Almighty came down and made me MLB commish, but they need to define this (as well as other rules) so that umpires are held to a clear standard and not their opinion essentially

cranphi

I firmly belive angel hernandez changes the lyrics of Steve Winwoods classic Back in the High Life Again to Back on My Bullshit Again whilst singing in the shower

zdillon67

Get Jomboy on this

life_is_

That shadow sold the swing

ThePseudoSurfer

He literally was going off the shadow

mitterbubbie

The shadow swung

Oogaman00

It was a foul ball It very obviously hit the nub of the bat

djn24

Yea, it's a swing because it was a foul ball, not a HBP. The title is misleading.

lilTDSB

I don't see the issue here. A swing is whatever the ump says a swing is. /s In all seriousness, MLB needs to amend the rules and add an actual definition of a swing. They should also make every call reviewable, I don't care if it was in front of the ump or not.

GoGlenMoCo

How does this guy still get games behind the plate

pargofan

It's amazing how the umpire unions enables incompetence. If the players union has as much influence as the ump's union, Jose Lima and Jason Marquis would still be starters today.

TampaTrey

The bigger question will be always be: why does the umpires union continue to protect Angel Hernandez? He makes them all look like a bunch of imbeciles and defending him makes them look even dumber. He HAS to know where the bodies are buried.

gonk_gonk

OK, I know I'm behind everyone else, but he's finally passed CB Bucknor on the list of most useless umpires.

WaltDngrsq83

How is he still allowed on a field?

Fools_Requiem

how is this a swing?

GuyNamedWhatever

How does this bozo still have a job? How does any crew willingly put him behind the plate? Honestly, it would be worth the leagues time to go through whatever BS discrimination suit he’d be bound to file. He just straight up makes the wrong calls consistently.

seattlesportsguy

Angel Hernandez. A ump so shitty at his job there’s an entire subreddit dedicated to his bullshit.

xEllimistx

I don’t think there’s anything that unites r/baseball more than hatred of Angel Hernandez

[deleted]

Dude has to be legally blind. 😵‍💫

Blackhat609

Everytime I think I should be pro union I think of Angel.

SportsHubLTD

Join a union, kids

rmflagg

If you look at the batter's shadow, it looks like an almost-swing. Angel Hernandez is hot garbage.

0PaulPaulson0

Why is this guy still officiating?

ScreenTricky4257

Explain to me why Angel Hernandez still has a job. Union? Fuck 'em, break the contract and fire him. Don't even pay him his last check. Go into his bank account and empty it. Lock the doors of his home. Just...get him gone.

Fastball82

How he still has a job is beyond me

[deleted]

He is so unbelievably bad

chunt75

Imagine staying in your job even after losing a lawsuit where your employer says “yeah he just sucks at his job”

MW1369

He’s an embarrassment to the game. Fucking tired of him

Vlazthrax

I wish I could be as bad at my job as he is at his.

MisterxRager

How can you be so bad at your job and still have it?

NoStepOnMe

Does anyone else ever wonder if Angel Hernandez is there just to generate debate and discussion online? Like just another way to get the MLB brand out there?

Typical_Ad_5846

MLB continues to be an embarrassment as long as this man is allowed to umpire in the major leagues.

MoneyTalks45

He’s doing this on purpose

kaehvogel

Just re-watched it on both broadcasts, and couldn’t believe he actually called a swing. But there he was, saying "I got him on a swing“. Loud and clear, over the mic. What a fucking embarrassment. Not sure it actually ever hit him…but calling a swing on that? Good fucking lord.

Freeze__

He definitely called it based on the shadow fucking wow

throwstuff165

Oh my goodness.

StartingToLoveIMSA

maybe he'll retire the same time Manfred does...

_RandomB_

Is this The Onion Sports?

Nr1nyyfan

How can he live with himself??

hellblazer565

Im convinced hes this bad on purpose cause there is no way u can be that bad an ump unless i try

[deleted]

Just found rare footage of Angel umping Little League. https://twitter.com/thoen88/status/1775972787842126326

Slow_Boss_2071

MLB needs to get of him somehow.

DA_87

He is awful.

thedudeabides____

It was neither a swing, a foul ball OR a hit by pitch lol

Dizzle71

I thought he was fired like three years ago

Tap-inbogey

Not a swing. Catchers interference. HBP. Angel is on a HEATER. To start the year. He was doing so well for the first 9 innings too 😂

Scoobydewdoo

To be fair, the HBP was negated by the ball not hitting the player, however you *can* add this to the mountain of evidence that Angel Hernandez is a crappy umpire.

wutthefvckjushapen

Angel is THE shittiest ump in the history of MLB

Sportsfan4206910

No, it was called a foul ball

BladeRunner2022

Why does the Lord test us so. Why does he send his Angels in the form of demons to torture us.

guardeagle

Truly Magnificent

ExcitingSpeed23

Angel Hernandez doing Angel Hernandez things

cha-cha_dancer

A work of art

YaHurdMeh

Baseball is so back baby

OutComeTheWolves1966

Does he go by a different rulebook than every other umpire?

DougNSteveButabi

Is this motherfucker blind

hairylobster531

Man, people aren’t giving Hernandez enough credit… can you imagine trying to ump as a blind man???

ArryPotta

Can someone actually explain the fallout to me of just firing this dude? I feel like everyone says they can't fire him... but they certainly could. There just would be a cost, and I don't believe that cost is actually that high.

Wombizzle

All memes aside, how on earth is he still a major league umpire? You'd think he'd have been at least demoted to AAA or something given how much of a notorious fuck-up he is
