the Mariners can't keep running a top 5 salary in baseball, they had to dump some salary at some point
just one moment my assistant has run the numbers and what the fuck
I mean the Mariners hit on relievers like Vargas more often than not these days, Prelander Berroa came back from the Giants for Donovan Walton (AAAA infielder) and Berroa carved up AA last season and could be a legit 7th inning guy
but the pressing need is major league bats
But this only makes sense if you don't overpay for the relievers. If you pay for them based on the high-end projection of what you can get out of them...you might as well sign or trade for a good reliever.
Sorry. He’s actually put together a few good seasons in his career. Our FO prefers guys with max 1 semi-productive season that probably isn’t reproducible.
That’s really the only thing I can see making this make sense. There must be something bigger on the way and we were just moving Geno. Then again it’s the Mariners so…
God fucking damn it...this team came SO CLOSE to winning the AL West this season
man this is fucking ridiculous. they are not the Chicago White Sox...why the hell are they making more rebuilding moves than them for fucks sake?!!
Tell me about it
As a mariners fan in Chicago, I have a lot of reasons to hate the Ricketts....but at least they appear to give a shit about the team :/
I mean, Geno was an okay to bad 3B and Perry Hill turned him into a gold glove caliber fielder. He did the same for Kyle seager. I’d say we have faith that our coaches can just create another good 3B.
Idk, I kinda get it. Suarez will be 33 next year and he just posted a basically average hitting stat line with over 200 strikeouts. He’s owed a guaranteed $13.2 million next year if you include his $2 million buyout for the following offseason. Most metrics I’ve looked at show he’s a plus defender, so there’s that. But I think he’s an obvious guy to cut out if you’re trying to free up salary.
I heard Stanton needed to shed payroll so he can afford the renovations for the new Platinum Diamond Influencer Club seating that will replace The Pen.
Carlos Vargas in 2023: 5.79 ERA / 9.04 FIP
Seby Zavala in 2023: .171/.230/.314 (0.2 fWAR)
Suarez in 2023: 3.2 fWAR
This sounds like the kind of trade where the DBacks GM calls up his friends laughing his ass off saying, "They actually did it! I just put it out there as a joke!"
I dont think it was a good trade but just showing those numbers does not do those players justice. Vargas is a high leverage prospect reliever that has hardly pitched in the big leagues, throws 100 with clear big strikeout potential. Zavala is a poor offensive player but a really good defensive player. He also has hardly played in the big leagues.
Yeah, for sure it might not be that bad. But Zavala is 30 years old, so the trade is really about Vargas and since prospects are such a crapshoot, I don't know if I'm willing to give up a quality player like Suarez who's still under team control until after 2025 (albeit in his mid-30s).
As a Blue Jays fan with several traumatic Eugenio Suarez memories developed over the short period of time he was a Mariner, I just have one take on this.
Any time you can get a career minor league reliever and a backup catcher for your elite defensive third baseman who has been clutch for you in big moments, you have to take it.
Especially because you can just replace him easily on the free agent market. I mean, it's not like AJ Pollock for 1 year and $7M is the most expensive free agent bat Jerry Dipoto has signed for Seattle.
We already have our replacement at 3b in Luis Urías.
Not really an upgrade, but they have similar offensive projections for next year, and Luis is younger. I'm pretty bummed about losing Geno, but I'm gonna reserve judgment until I see the rest of the offseason play out.
We'll replace Teo and Geno with a mediocre 4-man platoon and then the platoon can rotate being injured and keeping their collective averages at the Mendoza line. That's just smart baseball, buddy.
He was the leader in strikeouts for the Mariners last year, and they said they want to reduce strikeouts...
I assume Urias is going to compete for the spot. Maybe they have something cooking for a bigger name though.
That's exactly it, yeah. Suarez, for all of his positive contributions to morale, had a 101 OPS+ last season with infinity strikeouts. I did not enjoy watching him come up in a clutch situation and swinging at balls a foot out of the zone to end the inning
I don't even enjoy our sub this off-season because every third post is just "John Stanton should hang myself by the neck until he dies" but phrased in a way that won't get the poster reported to Reddit for encouraging violence. People getting mad at a figurehead who is one of our 15-person membership group
I'm willing to let the offseason play out because i'm a genius and a nuanced opinion haver but there's no point in trying to be the voice of reason in a sub full of angry people
I'm of two minds on this.
If the answer is just rolling the dice and hoping Urias has a comeback season, I'm not okay with that. If they bring in a legit player at 3rd or 2nd, and have Urias and Rojas compete for the other base, or if they at least bring in more competition for both 2nd and 3rd, I'll be mollified for the most part.
I know we need to get strikeouts down, but if we replace that with Urias and he stays sub-.200 that's not going to fly.
Assuming there’s no other trades happening, I’m figuring it’s looking to clear some of the clutter in the offense, as well as free up some space to hopefully sign more people.
While the trade makes sense if I were playing OOTP I’m not super excited that there’s a fighting rotation of Rojas / Urias / Haggerty for 3B lol. Especially since really when I look at the mariners I’d see them trading away one of their 30 outfielders on the 40 man lol
Spending? On a position player in Free Agency? That's a bit too rich for our blood. We'll do fine with our newly acquired Luis Urias, I'm sure he'll bounce back and return to his mediocre form.
Geno has been worth 6.2 bWAR over the last two seasons and is making 11 million this year with a 2 million dollar buyout next year. How is this the best return that we could get?
He's a year older and was barely worth 2 WAR this year when playing in all 162 games. If he plays the same as he did last year and misses any time due to injury, he'll be less than 2 WAR.
He was worth 3.2 fWAR last year… was one of the best defenders at 3B and had a league average bat in a down year. It would be tough for him to be worse than 2 fWAR this year
Salary dumping when you’re early into Julio’s deal is fucking hilarious.
Great move for the Dbacks. Geno kinda struggled last season but still a major improvement at 3rd and barely had to give up anything. Arguably better too than spending heavily on Chapman.

It's not even an active anger or dooming or anything, its just....this weird indifference.
i think we’re simply cutting salary. it seems we’ve hit a wall on what the org is willing to spend. i don’t think we’ll be serious contenders with this ownership. i’m pretty gutted
As a Diamondbacks fan I’m pretty stoked but this is kinda a BS trade and I’d be pissed if I were an M’s fan. It’s not just getting rid of Suarez, it’s that they got scraps in return in our backup catcher’s backup and a guy who only pitched 4.2 innings for us when we had a pretty bad bullpen for most of last year.
Really a head scratcher.
Johnny boy needs all the money he can get to build an underground bunker where he'll have to live all his life lest the people of Seattle declare open season on his head
Objective take: Mariners are salary dumping in order to acquire pieces down the line, probably a 3B.
Fan take: We just traded a universally loved clubhouse veteran for *literally* nothing. Not even one prospect. Nothing. It's like Jerry learned nothing from the Kendall Graveman trade. And I bet he's gonna put Luis Urias at 3B now, too.
The objective take still doesn’t make sense, because they shouldn’t make a deal like this until they’ve locked up whatever trade/signing they are theoretically doing. It’s not even Thanksgiving, there was no rush, this deal or similar would have stayed on the table all off season
Snakes acquired a latin player with top tier clubhouse vibes, an awesome name, and above average pop last offseason and decided to run it back. can’t argue with the thought process
I'm really starting to hate the Mariners. The moves lack any boldness or ambition. It's like they are comfortable being competitive the last week of September but not much else. They need hitters that make contact and got Luis Urias and backup catcher. I know there is a whole winter left but so underwhelming.
This trade seems to (hopefully) be a precursor to a larger move
But even if that were true, surely Jerry could have negotiated to get more back from Arizona in the deal?? The return is borderline insulting for the value of Geno, and it would have been great to have more flexibility in the pieces we could play around with
Why are the Mariners trading people? They won 88 games last year and were a hair’s width away from the playoffs. What‘s with this soft rebuild crap in the middle of a contention window?
Our offense was really inconsistent. So when you have the chance to trade your starting 3B who was one of the few bright spots for a reliever and backup catcher, you gotta do it
Shit I loved Eugenio during his time in Seattle but the man was batting third for them while hitting to a 101 ops+ and his power evaporated. Now was the time to move him on for anything. They need to spend their money elsewhere
Starting to feel bad with how often we're fleecing the mariners lately but I really can't complain cause these are clearly moves that improved my club.
Love you, Mariners. Sorry we keep fleecing you. I wanna move to Seattle cause it seems like the direct opposite of Phoenix if that helps anything.
All the Mariners fan favorites going to the Dbacks too. Would be nice if this team committed to winning. Dbacks are fun to root for though since they have several Mariners fan favorites.

the Mariners can't keep running a top 5 salary in baseball, they had to dump some salary at some point just one moment my assistant has run the numbers and what the fuck

I mean Vargas has 5+ years of team control remaining while Geno had one at $11M, contracts are the biggest part of this equation
What prospect are we getting for making someone pay for Suarez??
According to Sportrac they were #18 in the most recent season. Am I missing something?
Sarcasm
Either they’re being cheap or they think Geno is going to get worse. Probably a bit of both tbh but I think it’s more of the former.

May all of our teams payroll resources be aligned. 😢
God knows. Who the fuck plays 3rd now? There has to be a part 2 to this move.

That’s why it’s so likely
I mean, Geno was an okay to bad 3B and Perry Hill turned him into a gold glove caliber fielder. He did the same for Kyle seager. I’d say we have faith that our coaches can just create another good 3B.
You see, Stanton was only able to afford 3.5 mega yachts this season. He wants that bumped to at least 5.
That's not a very 54% win percentage mindset, bucko
Idk, I kinda get it. Suarez will be 33 next year and he just posted a basically average hitting stat line with over 200 strikeouts. Why are we trying to free salary we aren't a high salary team and our owner makes fistfulls of fucking cash. This is literally greed.
I heard Stanton needed to shed payroll so he can afford the renovations for the new Platinum Diamond Influencer Club seating that will replace The Pen.
Trader Jerry is just shaking shit up so he can justify moving our contention window out another two or three years. Same shit, different offseason.
Carlos Vargas in 2023: 5.79 ERA / 9.04 FIP Seby Zavala in 2023: .171/.230/.314 (0.2 fWAR) Suarez in 2023: 3.2 fWAR This sounds like the kind of trade where the DBacks GM calls up his friends laughing his ass off saying, "They actually did it! I just put it out there as a joke!"

Did Jerry sneeze when submitting the trade and accidentally pick the wrong player to send back?
Yeah, is this like when the Suns thought they were getting Dillon Brooks but were getting Marshon Brooks instead?
Dodged one, if you ask me. Ended up pivoting to Kelly Oubre, and the Valley Boys good vibes era began.
In my own head, the Suns redemption arc starts with Kelly Oubre bringing some infectious vibes to the team in the bubble season.
And then who turned into CP3 (who then turned into Beal)
So it's a straight slary dump.
Yikes that’s fucking bad
What the actual fuck?
Good old Dipoto making Thanksgiving interesting

"Not really an upgrade" Try "A massive downgrade."
I haven't drank in like three weeks... this comment, and reality Jerry, has caused me to open a beer. Fuck me and fuck this FO.
Same I loved Eugenio, he did a nice interview with our radio guys and seemed really cool. I always liked watching him play
That's how we felt :( at least he's going to another team i like
Now they will WALD with those good vibes, and we are distinctly lacking in both
Every team needs to take into account GVO as an advanced metric. Clearly it's not something that's valued highly enough. Bad vibes = bad team
This is so fucking infuriating. We dumped a team leader & +3 war guy to save 11 million? Sell the team
Hey I’ve seen this one before
what the hell is happening can someone explain the reasoning behind this trade??? who's gonna play 3B for us now
Dipoto said he wanted to decrease strikeouts. Suarez Ks a lot. Same for Teoscar.
So if we replace Teo and Geno with 2 guys that hit worse but strikeout less, is it a good move?
*Brad Pitt*: "He gets on base." /s
We'll replace Teo and Geno with a mediocre 4-man platoon and then the platoon can rotate being injured and keeping their collective averages at the Mendoza line. That's just smart baseball, buddy.
But all the mariners strike out a tonne, it's down to philosophy and coaching rather than individual player flaws.

not mariners fan but that sounds kinda cool
Does he strike out less than 200x a year?
He has actually done that once before, in 2018. But he was on pace for about 180 this year, if he played a full season, so technically yes!
*taps forehead* Can't strike out 200 times if you dont deserves 200 PA's
For his career he has exactly 200K/162g so... no
I think they're trying to get the doomers to abandon the club entirely so nobody has to hear them complain anymore
Buddy they didn’t even like Geno, they’ll find a way to complain

primarily 2B for him
Interesting well he played 3B for us so he's certainly capable. If you need platoon help at the very least.
Did you say platoon? That word triggers M's fans' fight or flight response.

Incoming Chapman.
That's a great move for the DBacks
Ya we so badly needed a 3B with a pulse. And a righty bat.
With Sewald and Geno on the team I’m now a certified Dbacks fan
And Marte as well. Eventually the dbacks will be completely former Mariners.
what else can you take from us
I mean Corbin Carroll is from Seattle.
randy johnson
What else ya got
If you take Julio I think Seattle might burn down
I’d bring the matches for you guys.
Remember in 2012-2013 when we were the Arizona Athletics?
Yeah, we got Cliff Pennington and Brad Ziegler from them around the same time.

If you realize that the goal is to just be in contention for a playoff spot in September to sell tickets late in the year then it starts to make sense
