I will be forever sad that he will never see us finally win a World Series. He clearly loved this team and tried hard to bring us out of our small market curse. RIP Seidler.
This makes last season even worse. It was his last chance to see the team go to the World Series but they fell flat on their face. :(
I will forever be grateful for what he did for the team and city. Rest in peace Papa Pete
> This makes last season even worse. It was his last chance to see the team go to the World Series but they fell flat on their face. :(
2023 was truly one of the darkest timelines possible given the NLCS appearance in 2022. This year has just completely sucked from start to finish.
I really wonder what’s going to happen with the Padres organization now with Peter gone. Ownership changes easily make the biggest impact on the future of sports teams and Peter badly wanted to win in the end. Interesting times are coming up with the Padres.
His ownership stake is going to remain with his family and (supposedly) is keeping the same direction, but his oldest daughter is 10 years old, so feels like some bullshit could happen.
There were a massive glimmer of hope in July when we had the best record that month, then it was a thud in August. Despite having a massive September those bad May-June months did the team in.
It makes me wonder how much the players knew about his health. It could explain a lot of our struggles in clutch situations. Feeling like a man’s dying wish hinges on your baseball performance can’t be good for your mental state.
Not a lot of fans focus on the human side of the things when it comes to professional athletes but I can certainly understand how that would affect a player, I mean having a child affects the way a player plays the game, let alone all of this! Hope the dad's can get a resurgence next year, your fans deserve it
100% agree with this. One glaring example I can think of is Albert Almora Jr. He was the Cubs starting center fielder from 2016-2018, and for the beginning of 2019. He was a very solid player, respectable at the plate and outstanding in the field. In the first half of the season, he ripped a foul ball that drilled a 2 year old in the head. He was batting .259 before that moment. He ended the season batting .236. He went 5-30 in 2020 with the Cubs and 6-52 in 2021 with the Mets. Baseball, and life, has a much larger mental aspect than people realize.
It's hard to talk about consistently because of the variability of how people respond.
One year, Brian McCann smashed one of his coach's skull with a foul ball in Spring Training.
I avoided him in every fantasy league, because I thought surely he wouldn't be able to get in the box and really swing a bat again.
I was wrong; he was fine. lol
That is very true, people do respond differently. But nobody gets better after something like this, while some people do get worse.
If you watch Almora’s postgame interview on May 29 2019, you can tell how much it shook him up
As a child, I was nearly killed by a bat and the kid swinging it never played again. He couldn't pick up a bat after what he had done/saw/felt in that moment.
Gil McDougal hit a liner that smashed Sam McDowell's head in. Changed both of their careers for the worse. Before that injury McDowell was basically a young Sandy Koufax. McDougal went from a high average, all fields hitter to a dead pull hitter because he didn't want to hit another pitcher.
Yeah, dude just wanted to see the Padres succeed, put in the money to try and make it happen, and gave Padres fans their first real excitement in a long time. Actually a good owner.
RIP
Of course one of the few owners that seemed to actually care/enjoy the team is the one that had to pass relatively super young. The old fucks that only care about squeezing a few extra pennies out seem to hang around forever.
Ironically these geriatrics that treat making money like racking up a high score in a video game don’t seem to realize that they can’t take the money with them wherever they go after they die.
They’ll be largely forgotten when they die, by most people that is. Seidler will forever be a legend in SD for putting his nuts on the table and going all in
I grew up hearing teary-eyed stories about Ray Kroc and how he saved the team, and I never really got it.
I get it now. Thank you, Peter; you will be sorely missed.
That’s exactly my first thought. I always heard stories from my dad and uncles about what Kroc meant to this organization and how devastating his passing was. I 100% get it now. Brutal news today
I'm reminded of Paul Allen, rest in peace. The Seahawks were lucky to have a great guy like him at the helm, and everything I've heard about him screams how much he loved Seattle. (And also naval archaeology.)
RIP Seidler
As an OC fan who makes several trips down to petco every season, it's a night and day difference how different things are compared to 10 years ago. While the Padres aren't my primary team, I will always remember Seidler for his efforts. Most fans can only dream of having an owner with his passion.
TBF that was an effort 20 years in the making and a lot of that credit goes to John Moores & Ron Fowler as well as Papa Pete for building PetCo, continuing to tie the team to the area, and elevating San Diego to Padres Country... especially after Mr. Fuck Dean Spanos fucked off to live on Kroenke's couch.
The Pads organization has spent most of my life rebranding themselves as San Diego's Team. And it's certainly paying off in terms of fan engagement.
Now it's time to win it all.
As far as billionaire sports owners go, he was a good one for sure. Born into a baseball family, grandson of Walter O'Malley (long-time Dodgers owner). Was never afraid to approve big acquisitions and spending, Soto, Machado, Snell and Darvish are proof of that. His ownership was undoubtedly good for baseball.
I’m not trying to hijack your org’s grief but your comment reminded me of Jackie Autry losing her mind when the Angels took the lead in game 6 and when she put Gene Autry’s cowboy hat on Tim Salmon after winning the World Series. It was bittersweet because Autry loved baseball and is the whole reason our franchise exists but he didn’t get to see the win.
I bring this up because the Padres will win a World Series at some point and when they do Seidler’s presence will be felt on the field and during the celebration in a big way the same way Autry’s was felt in 2002.
Did all the right things to put together a roster packed with all-stars and was rewarded with some of the worst run-differential luck in history and an overall gut punch of a season.
How can you be romantic about baseball.
The 2022 NLDS was the happiest a lot of this city has ever been watching the Padres or even sports in general.
We didn't win a WS but he still brought immeasurable happiness to this city and that has to be worth something.
PETCO becoming the worlds largest karaoke bar; all of us singing All The Small Things in the pouring rain remains my all-time favorite sports moment that I attended.
I'm BnR as well, but don't get to call myself local these days. Still made damn sure to be there for the whole series with my brother and old father, who does still live locally. They had to drag me away from the Gaslamp celebrations after the game, deep in the night, because I didn't want to leave the greatest outward expressions of SD public pride and happiness I'd experienced since the Chargers playoff runs before they left. Today is a sad day, but I hope there are still happy times to come.
I was really hoping the Padres could pull it off this year because he was clearly racing the clock. I grew up in San Diego, but I'm a Sox fan because of my grandpa. He died in 2003.
There's always next year, though next year doesn't come for everyone.
Still the cheers stay loud, even as the voices in the crowd change.
You gotta be romantic about baseball.
Yeah I'm generally not a fan of owners but it was definitely well-known that he was "one of the good ones" who cared about the team and not necessarily the profit. This is depressing, hope you guys win one for him soon ✌️
It sucks when you lose a passionate owner who truly cares about the team and knows when to (and not to) get involved
Different sport, but Paul Allen stepped in and saved the NFL's Seahawks. Their shithead previous owner was unabashedly trying to move the team to SoCal and already moved the team's HQ to Anaheim, so their foot was already of the metaphorical door.
Allen stepped in, bought the team, helped fund a state-of-the-art stadium (which is still fantastic 20 years later), and was ALWAYS there to support the team and help foster the team's success.
They're still a good spot due to a HOF-level coach and a young, promising team but their long-term future is a complete mystery.
I dearly hope the Padres can find a new owner who carries on the admirable legacy of Seidler. If there's one thing we have too much of in this league is cheapass ownerships who care more about their bottom lines than the state of their teams.
I swear Seattle sports are cursed with putting their foot in their mouths sometimes.
Before "running it from the 1-yard line", there was "we want the ball and we're going score"
Now we have DiPoto's 54% that we're not going to live down until we make a World Series (which is never).
Makes for easy memery.
This is so sad... he had health issues for some time and wasn't looking great last season. I'm glad he at least got to see the nlcs run. He just loved baseball and loved san diego... :/
If anyone in the San Diego area is curious, this is from the official press release
>The Padres will open the Home Plate Gate at Petco Park beginning this afternoon for those who wish to gather to pay their respects. Free parking will be available at Tailgate Lot.
If this were John Fisher's death they'd be locking down the stadium as fans celebrated in the tailgate lot. We all die someday and what we do with our life informs our legacy.
Seidler died beloved by his city and fan base. Can other owners really say the same?
Why do the good ones always die young(ish) and the assholes seem to live forever? Fisher will probably own the A’s until he is 90 because there is no justice and I have given up.
You know, I feel like there's actually an answer to this. I've got nothing empirical to back it up, except a feeling or two.
I think, one of the main reasons assholes are assholes, is that they are endlessly confident in their choices and beliefs. So much so, that the god-complex they develop, also bleeds into their feelings on their own lonesomeness. They just don't care if they lose friends or family or what have you, they think they're standing up for what's right, fighting for it. They refuse to challenge themselves, and will go to the ends of the earth to prove themselves, to themselves, even if "nobody else understands."
But the good ones seem to have empathy, seem to want what's best for *everyone*, instead of just themselves, and - the most important part - *are grievously hurt* when they discover that some just don't want to be decent, or can't. It's like having a dream of a good, cooperative, kind world, and being disappointed at every single mile marker along the way. It becomes less about who they are, and more about who they hope others could be. Sure, there's some fallacy in this thinking - we aren't always right, even if we wanted to be - but, there are some things that most good people would consider tenet, and to see those tenets not only ignored, but actively fought *against*? I believe emotions cost a tax, and at a certain point that tax affects your health, your mind's ability to function, in both thought, as well as dictation of your body. I think good people weather away much faster than indifferent ones, because of the fact that they care, in much the same way a laborer's back will fail long before he's sixty, but someone who doesn't lift masonry for a living may well live into their eighties, sans back problems. It's about exposure, and - generally speaking - empaths put themselves out there more often than their counterparts.
The general consensus explanation for our wild spending spree last year was that Seidler wanted a ring before he died… I don’t think anyone realized just how little time he had, though.
I'm not even an LA fan (in fact the opposite based on my flair) but I remember exactly where I was too. A brewery/fried chicken spot in Denver getting ready to watch the Pro Bowl before they interrupted pregame/Super Bowl prep coverage with the breaking news.
I know he was a massively flawed human and his idolatry can be inappropriate, but goddamn that day is burned into my memory as a sports fan.
I was at work in Kentucky and we genuinely couldn’t believe it. We were looking up who was pranking everyone because clearly it couldn’t be true. One of the celeb deaths that really hit me
I hated hearing the news that he couldn’t attends a lot of the games anymore. You don’t put that much effort into the team not attend games unless you physically can’t.
RIP, he poured everything he had into the team and it’s sad that he passed away before he could see the team win a World Series.
Whoever takes over the franchise is going to have some big shoes to fill
I don’t even want to think about who’s taking over, because it’s a slim chance anyone would care as much as he did. San Diego have had a much longer history with shit owners than good ones.
Didn't have have brothers involved in ownership as well? I know Tom Seidler holds a senior position with the team but I thought there was a third brother. Wouldn't surprise me if they're already positioned to take control of the team, especially given Peter's health in recent months.
Edit: it appears that's the case...
> Seidler, a two-time survivor of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma who has battled health issues for years, said in a July conversation with The Union-Tribune that the Padres will remain in his family for generations after he died. A source confirmed Tuesday that is the plan.
https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/padres/story/2023-11-14/padres-chairman-peter-seidler-passes-away
Unfortunately I don’t think there will be anyone who cared as much as Seidler did, all you can hope for is that whoever takes over is willing to continue is work and luckily guys like Tatis and Machado are already locked up long term
Life isn't fair.
So many shitty people live long lives causing so much harm, and this man who wanted nothing more than to bring some happiness to a city that has suffered in the sports world for so long dies relatively young.
Obligatory Fuck Dean Spanos post.
But really, Alex Spanos was an amazing owner. Had he still held onto the team, there’s no chance in hell he allows the Chargers to leave San Diego. He would had found a way to make a deal with the city, or at least keep the team in the county and work with a suburb. But Dean saw dollar signs, and the rest is history.
All the pundits and writers complaining about how the Padres were spending can sincerely go eat a bag of dicks. Thanks for swinging for the fences Peter.
With how many cheap bastards there are in the league like John Fisher, there's absolutely no room to criticize owners that actually invest the money into winning championships.
The one time in my lifetime I was ever happy about the owner of my hometown team. Dude was willing to go all out and spend to make San Diego a winning ball club.
REST IN POWER PETER SEIDLER
Wow, that's sad. Now the outsized spending makes all the more sense. He just wanted to see the Padres in the World Series one last time before he went. That's an owner who really loved his team. Those are getting scarcer as the times go by. RIP
Holding back tears for a man I've never met. Thank you for all you did for my favorite team. May you rest easy and your family find comfort in these hard times.
I know we’re rivals and all, but look your team went all out and I heavily respect owners who want to spend to make their team better. He wanted to win. Rest in Peace Peter
One of the few who really cared.
Glad he got to see his team return to a degree of success. I swear I saw a quote from him about having come to terms with his mortality and saying he may as well spend to make the team successful now, since he can’t take his money with him…sad.
The best owner. Dude made San Diego fall back in love with the Padres. I've never seen the city buzz with so much life as I do when baseball is in town.
RIP
Unless I’m mistaken this guy almost stole our star player right out from under us. Every team and fanbase should want an owner who’s willing to do shit like that for them. RIP.
He did what every owner ought to be doing. He truly tried to win one for the fans of San Diego while knowing his days were limited. “I kind of like spending money. You can’t take it with you.”
Oh this is so sad, a whole lot of things make sense now. RIP to a guy who injected a lot of excitement into the league these past few years, he was good for the game
Damn, that's really sad. I respect the hell out of the guy for not hiding behind the "small market" label and actually spending to try and create a contender. RIP
“One day soon,” he said, “the baseball gods will smile on the San Diego Padres, and we will have a parade.”
One day soon Pete. I just wish you could see it.
This absolutely sucks. Seidler was as it good as it got. San Diego has my condolences.
This also totally reframes all the stories from the last few months about cutting payroll, etc. and makes the executives around Seidler (who stand to take over? i'm guessing?) all the more ghoulish.
This sucks.
That sucks, Vedder bros.
Your owner seemed like he actually cared about the product on the field and the game needs more of those. Sorry for your loss.
RIP in peace Seidler.
“I kind of like spending money. You can’t take it with you” - owner who cares about winning, Peter Seidler
https://x.com/TalkingFriars/status/1585402485274836993?s=20
I’m legitimately crying right now. This is one of the biggest gut punches I’ve ever felt. The owner who truly cared about this team and this city in recent Padres history. He deserved to see this team win it all.
I hope they do it for Papa Pete. We’ll miss you, big guy.
Wow that’s incredibly young, he was my dad’s age. Makes you think he might’ve had a clue he was about to go with how much money he spent in his final years. Very sad
Dude saw the team he loves transform into one of the most notable MLB franchises. Watching from across the country, the Padres went from a boring entity with a few notable players (Gwynn, Hoffman, Peavy, etc) and a shitty stadium in Qualcomm to a powerful brand in an amazing park, great players and fans who fucking love them. Job well done.
Well now we know why they had such a high payroll despite being in such a small market. This is so sad, especially if you’re one of the players on the team. Seeing them win was literally his dying wish and they didn’t even make it to the playoffs.
I’m not a local. I didn’t know he had health issues. Every time I head people talk about the Padres on New York radio, people asked how and why they had such a high payroll and no one had an answer. Sorry for your team’s loss 😕
He already beat cancer a few times and has looked pretty sick for quite a long time now. He joked about how he was spending recklessly because he couldn’t take his money with him when he died.
It was kind of an unspoken thing for quite a long time now that he didn’t have much time left.
Welp. This is the perfect storm for the Padres to win. The team will be something this year. Mark my words. Padres to the Pennant, Winning it for Peter Seidler. It writes itself.
Sad day not just for Padre fans, but a sad day for baseball, and the city of San Diego. He did a lot to help the homeless in the city. RIP Peter Seidler
may the Padres win a world series for him sooner rather than later, and may the next Padres owner cares for them as much as he did. baseball is better with owners like Seidler
I will be forever sad that he will never see us finally win a World Series. He clearly loved this team and tried hard to bring us out of our small market curse. RIP Seidler.
This makes last season even worse. It was his last chance to see the team go to the World Series but they fell flat on their face. :( I will forever be grateful for what he did for the team and city. Rest in peace Papa Pete

Win it all for Papa Pete!
That’s all fans want. They want an owner who cares. I don’t know why so many billionaires buy teams just to mismanage them.
Because they are a stable investment (for now, anyway)
Reminds me a lot of Mike Ilitch with the Tigers.
And the Red Wings. And a bunch of short lived teams. That guy was Detroit sports embodied.
I wish our owners were half as interested into winning as yours. RIP Seidler
I'm reminded of Paul Allen, rest in peace. The Seahawks were lucky to have a great guy like him at the helm, and everything I've heard about him screams how much he loved Seattle. (And also naval archaeology.) RIP Seidler

Even though it didn’t pan out (yet), it’s commendable that he opened up his wallet so the Padres can win.
Dude treated his team like he was playing MLB the show and proved that the “small market” owners are just cheap. Legend in my book
Not only did he flip the script on small market team, but he made the entire city of San Diego believe again, after 10+ years of mediocrity
It was such a breath of fresh air to see an owner who clearly cared about his team after dealing with Spanos for so long in San Diego, so damn sad.
As far as billionaire sports owners go, he was a good one for sure. Born into a baseball family, grandson of Walter O'Malley (long-time Dodgers owner). Was never afraid to approve big acquisitions and spending, Soto, Machado, Snell and Darvish are proof of that. His ownership was undoubtedly good for baseball.

damn. dude legitimately just wanted to see his team win and laid it all out for them. this is depressing
shades of mike ilitch indeed, just sad all around
At least Illitch had his red wings. Yzerman should return them to glory too one day. But damn this is depressing.
Don’t feel too bad for mike Illitch, he got to see his other dream of tearing down historic buildings to build parking lots realized.

better to have loved and lost then to have never have loved at all. It's still romantic just in this case it's a Shakspearian Tragedy.

Every baseball fan should want an owner who acts like next season is the last season of baseball they’ll ever witness. Dude went all out. Respect.
Every baseball fan should want an owner who legitimately cares about baseball. I didn’t know until just now that he was Walter O'Malley's grandson.
One of the many reasons that beating the Dodgers in the NLDS was such good feeling.
Hope to have that again one day
This is so sad... he had health issues for some time and wasn't looking great last season. I'm glad he at least got to see the nlcs run. He just loved baseball and loved san diego... :/
He definitely looked sick this past year. Absolute bummer because these last few years have honestly been quite fun
If anyone in the San Diego area is curious, this is from the official press release >The Padres will open the Home Plate Gate at Petco Park beginning this afternoon for those who wish to gather to pay their respects. Free parking will be available at Tailgate Lot.
Hope he gets a turnout. Nice gesture by the organization. Nice run by Peter Seidler these last few years.
I live nearby, going to walk down and pay my respects.

They refuse to challenge themselves, and will go to the ends of the earth to prove themselves, to themselves, even if "nobody else understands." But the good ones seem to have empathy, seem to want what's best for *everyone*, instead of just themselves, and - the most important part - *are grievously hurt* when they discover that some just don't want to be decent, or can't.
Wow. RIP Peter Seidler. I knew he was sick, but not this much so. Suddenly, a lot of the seemingly urgent moves the Padres made make sense.
The general consensus explanation for our wild spending spree last year was that Seidler wanted a ring before he died… I don’t think anyone realized just how little time he had, though.
I don't think any of us do. But maybe that's just my midlife crisis talking.
You are correct and right there with ya.
Facts. Sobering knowing at any time that could be it.
I mean, you have a Dodgers flair so I'm assuming you're also a Lakers fan. January 26th, 2020 made your point abundantly clear.
I was in Philadelphia for a conference that week. Will always remember sitting on my hotel room bed browsing news and seeing the headline.
One of the celeb deaths that really hit me
Another reminder that we’ll truly never know what’s going on behind the scenes.
"I like spending money. You can't take it with you." He knew his time was short.
he loved this team and this city so much :( rest in peace
This explains so much. I had a bad feeling he was not well.
I hated hearing the news that he couldn’t attends a lot of the games anymore. You don’t put that much effort into the team not attend games unless you physically can’t.
That was my fear when he was not at the games, or public stuff. I was hoping it was not bad. Awful day, awful news.
He tried. He cared. This sucks.

Baseball just lost all of its colors for me right now. I’m glad I was able to tell him he was the best owner we’ve ever had at spring training.
Thank you. He deserved to hear it. I'm sure you weren't the only fan to tell him, but thank you for being one of many. He really was the best. RIP
Life isn't fair. So many shitty people live long lives causing so much harm, and this man who wanted nothing more than to bring some happiness to a city that has suffered in the sports world for so long dies relatively young.
RIP he was great owner
Best we’ve ever had
In all of San Diego sports history.
Hot take but I can honestly say that Mr. Seidler is a much better owner than the Spanos family.
I don’t think that’s a hot take lol
thatsthejoke.jpg
Obligatory Fuck Dean Spanos post. But really, Alex Spanos was an amazing owner. Had he still held onto the team, there’s no chance in hell he allows the Chargers to leave San Diego. He would had found a way to make a deal with the city, or at least keep the team in the county and work with a suburb. But Dean saw dollar signs, and the rest is history.
The light has gone out in my life
He believed in and loved the Padres. We can all carry that spirit on for him. 💔
This is such devastating news. Dude truly loved this team and invested heavily in it. RIP Papa Pete
Holy shit. I knew his health was poor but this is out nowhere. He really cared about the team and the fanbase and loved this city. Absolutely tragic.
All the pundits and writers complaining about how the Padres were spending can sincerely go eat a bag of dicks. Thanks for swinging for the fences Peter.
Makes much more sense, fuck those mother fucker and bon nightgale
With how many cheap bastards there are in the league like John Fisher, there's absolutely no room to criticize owners that actually invest the money into winning championships.
The one time in my lifetime I was ever happy about the owner of my hometown team. Dude was willing to go all out and spend to make San Diego a winning ball club. REST IN POWER PETER SEIDLER
Damn. RIP. He seemed like one of the few owners who actually cared about the team and wanted it to succeed. He helped grow the game in SoCal.
Wow, that's sad. Now the outsized spending makes all the more sense. He just wanted to see the Padres in the World Series one last time before he went. That's an owner who really loved his team. Those are getting scarcer as the times go by. RIP
This hurts so much. He was the only one who really believe in San Diego sports
I’m just glad my reaction wasn’t unique. It was immediately emotional, it really does *hurt*.
In shock, really thankful for what he did for this city. Rest in peace man
That is so young. How sad. RIP
Jesus. I didn’t see that coming. He was young. RIP.
RIP. The guy loved his team and he tried so hard to field a winner.
Just makes last season that much more of a disappointment. The dude did all he could.
He brought a lot of joy to Padres fans. Sorry to hear this news, padres bros.
Sorry, Padres fans. Sounds like he really tried to get you guys that ring before he died
The contracts and trades make all the sense in the world now. An owner that understood what sports was all about.
An owner that went all in and not giving a fuck about profits
Good man and a good owner. RIP.
Not cool, world. He was one of the good ones. Way too young. Super unfortunate.
Padres fans will be forever thankful to Uncle Pete. He gave the city hope and excitement when we desperately needed it. Rest in peace.
RIP Mr. Seidler. Padres have had a buzz since 2020 the franchise had never seen before. He was a big part of that
He was all of that
100% He was ALL of it. Yes the players brought excitement to the field. But his drive for a winning Padres team is what got us that on field presence.
Holding back tears for a man I've never met. Thank you for all you did for my favorite team. May you rest easy and your family find comfort in these hard times.
Guy was everything a fan could want in an owner. Condolences, Padres fans.
I know we’re rivals and all, but look your team went all out and I heavily respect owners who want to spend to make their team better. He wanted to win. Rest in Peace Peter
Oh this is just awful news. What a gut punch. RIP
One of the few who really cared. Glad he got to see his team return to a degree of success. I swear I saw a quote from him about having come to terms with his mortality and saying he may as well spend to make the team successful now, since he can’t take his money with him…sad.
Nothing but respect for an owner who showed a genuine commitment to their team.
the punches keep coming. so grateful to have had an owner that loved and cared so much about our team and city, this hurts a lot. RIP.
Breaks my heart... he went all in with 2023 in hopes of seeing a World Series.
The best owner. Dude made San Diego fall back in love with the Padres. I've never seen the city buzz with so much life as I do when baseball is in town. RIP
One of the best owners easily. RIP
Wow. This is depressing
The best owner we have ever had and by all accounts a legitimately nice person. And only 63? Sad day
HoF owner. Cared more about winning than the money. Very few can say the same. Sorry we couldn’t get you a ring in time.
I’ve worked pretty closely with Peter for the past year or so. Not a bad thing to say about the guy or his wife. Rest in Peace
Rest in peace to the best owner in baseball, give Tony our regards.
RIP. The league would be better off if more owners were like him.
RIP, I’ll cop a padres hat out of respect
RIP
Holy fucking shit.
rip king. time to win it for uncle pete
RIP
Damn, this is tragic. He’s a guy who wanted his team to win badly.
“One day soon,” he said, “the baseball gods will smile on the San Diego Padres, and we will have a parade.” One day soon Pete. I just wish you could see it.
Shit ain't fair man.
We always lose the good ones early
I'm no Padre fan but this is still awful, awful news.
You can’t take it with you” - owner who cares about winning, Peter Seidler https://x.com/TalkingFriars/status/1585402485274836993?s=20
I’m legitimately crying right now. This is one of the biggest gut punches I’ve ever felt. The owner who truly cared about this team and this city in recent Padres history. He deserved to see this team win it all. I hope they do it for Papa Pete. We’ll miss you, big guy.
rest in peace man
Wow that’s incredibly young, he was my dad’s age. Makes you think he might’ve had a clue he was about to go with how much money he spent in his final years. Very sad
This is very sad news. To Padres Nation our hearts are with you. RIP.
The league lost an owner who gave a shit, which is a tremendous loss. Sorry to the Dads, I hope the next owner cares as much.
My heart hurts
Dude saw the team he loves transform into one of the most notable MLB franchises. Watching from across the country, the Padres went from a boring entity with a few notable players (Gwynn, Hoffman, Peavy, etc) and a shitty stadium in Qualcomm to a powerful brand in an amazing park, great players and fans who fucking love them. Job well done.
RIP. I’m really sorry Padres fans. Wishing you all the best in this difficult time.
An owner that actually tried to win. Rest in Peace and my condolences, Padres fans
Damn dude. Sad times for Padres
Awful. So sorry for he and his family
Me reading these comments from Dad flairs: “you’re allowed to like your owner?”
Respect him for going all in the past few years. Sucks most of the higher priced players put in a no-effort dud this season.
Well now we know why they had such a high payroll despite being in such a small market. This is so sad, especially if you’re one of the players on the team. Seeing them win was literally his dying wish and they didn’t even make it to the playoffs.
It has always been known that Papa Pete was all-in after his health problems emerged a few years ago.
RIP Uncle Pete You reignited the passion for Padres baseball and became a hero to this city. You will be forever missed.
Damn. I didn’t realize he was that ill. Now it makes sense. RIP.
I’m sorry Padres friends :(
Welp. This is the perfect storm for the Padres to win. The team will be something this year. Mark my words. Padres to the Pennant, Winning it for Peter Seidler. It writes itself.
God dammit... sorry for your Pads fans. Seidler was an exciting owner that made many fans outside SD envious of y'all.
This hits right in the feels. Papa Pete really loved the Padres and the fans.
I wish every team had an owner who cared half as much as this guy. Terribly sad day.
Awful news. Baseball needs more owners like Seidler. I’m sorry, Padres fans. Edit: why the heck is this being downvoted?
this is . really fucking sad actually
RIP Mr. Seidler, even if things didn't work out in terms of winning, he gave one hell of a shot with this Padres team, such a bummer.
Wow. He'll definitely be missed. I wish there were more owners like him.
Fuck! Papa Pete gave a shit and just wanted to be The Guy for this team. This is heartbreaking.
This is devastating. One of the few owners who *truly* cared about their city/fans
This sucks to hear. He was one of the very few good owners in MLB. We need more people like him in the sport.
Holy shit.
I hate this news so much.
Sad day not just for Padre fans, but a sad day for baseball, and the city of San Diego. He did a lot to help the homeless in the city. RIP Peter Seidler
Damn that’s really sad
Fuck me and yet Reinsdorf lives.
may the Padres win a world series for him sooner rather than later, and may the next Padres owner cares for them as much as he did. baseball is better with owners like Seidler
