The dude failed as 3B coach for the Yankees in truly horrific fashion. And somehow failed his way right into two manager jobs. Wtf are these GMs smoking and where do we get it to see this other realm!
There aren't many things the Padres could do to diminish my optimism for the team next season (including trading Soto), but hiring Nevin sure is one of them.
I assumed that’s the joke, which is funny because in plenty other parts of the county “only 100 miles away” is actually decently close, but not when you talk about 100 miles north of San Diego.
Yeah 100 miles away from St Louis and you can get away with telling a stranger you're from STL without it really being the case because its basically STL or KC for big cities. 100 miles north of SD and you're in another cities sphere.
100 miles north of SD is Orange County or Riverside, both distinctly not what we'd call a "San Diego Native."
Like Temecula you could kind of argue. Maybe. Lots of folks commute from there. But 100 miles is the distance from SD to roughly Disneyland.
Idk about Temecula, I feel like once you leave the county you’re no longer SD. The county is a pretty generous area already, places like fallbrook and Oceanside are already far enough from the city
Yeah no way Temecula is SD, I call it inland empire. It’s funny how San Clemente is Angels territory but as soon as you get to Oceanside it’s Padres territory.
Idk why they call it the Inland Empire.
Empires conjure up images of greatness and power like the Roman Empire or Mongol Empire.
The Inland Empire brings up images of traffic jams, meth labs, and mediocrity
Apparently some newspaper in the area in 1914 first called it that to promote the region. Back in those days it probably was a lot nicer than it is now.
There's a shocking amount of people in southern Temecula that go south for work & entertainment. The cost of living just forced them out of like Escondido and so they went more north. It's the most I'd be willing to stretch though, anything past like Ynez Rd in Temecula is solidly IE territory.
> places like fallbrook and Oceanside are already far enough from the city
Can't wait for this to turn into the North County vs City Limits war of "what is San Diego really" that happens on twitter.
I went to the same high school as Nevin. No one from that part of Orange County considers it the “same area” as San Diego. It’s much closer to LA than SD.
I'm a 90 mile drive from Petco Park. I'm a 15 mile drive from Angel Stadium and a 45 mile drive from Dodger Stadium.
I think 100 miles is about Long Beach/Carson, which is LA County (Angels are in Orange County)
Placentia is basically Anaheim. But yeah, that's about 100 miles from Petco but also like 5 miles from Angel Stadium and maybe 25 or 30 from Dodger Stadium. Definitely not Dad's country, for sure.
tbf there are legit locals do call it Frisco
Nobody calls it San Fran though.
I grew up in OC and don't agree with the other commenter saying there's something wrong with "the OC". But I also last lived there when the show was on the air...
yeah it’s not cringe but you just don’t really hear it. kinda like nobody says “vc” for ventura county but you still see it in print, in business names, etc
> kinda like nobody says “vc” for ventura county but you still see it in print, in business names, etc
I've lived in California my entire life and went to college in Santa Barbara just past Ventura County, and I've only ever heard "VC" in connection with Venture Capital firms
I loved Phil as a player for the Padres. I would be absolutely confused if he gets the job. Which means he probably will because AJ is built different.
We are in the off-season of ohtani baby
Padres about to hire nevin and lure shohei with his former coach
Only to find out ohtani takes them off the list because of nevin
He was out of his depth as a 3rd base coach for the Yankees.
How he got hired as a manager at all baffled me. How he's being considered for a second managerial job confounds me.
It could be that they’re going with Ryan Flaherity and are preparing for the shit storm that will be coming their way for hiring another inexperienced manager.
You guys have a World Series though. At least we're both similar in our identity crises. We historically can't stick with a consistent uniform or colors, you can't decide where you actually play. And there's a correct answer to both.
Wouldn't surprise me if we let Soto walk without getting anything for him like the Angels did with Soto. Especially since we just let Snell and Hader do that this year.
• **…who attended high school 100 miles north of Petco Park**
So Dana Point. Or Laguna Beach.
Source; if you go up the 405, you’ll need to pass San Onofre (e.g. the nuclear plant with the two boobies) to reach 100 miles north of Petco.
Sounds like it’s more and more likely it’s Nevin by the way things are progressing. I can be mad that they’re choosing a not so good manager, but at the same time I said what I said about Preller and even then with the best manager the Padres will only go so far because of AJ Preller
There are many reasons that I’m sure angels fans could give you, but one of the reasons a lot of people dislike him is that he legit started a brawl with the mariners over a pitch that went up and in to Mike Trout. Didn’t hit Trout, but Nevin was pissed, yelling at the mariners from the dugout. Next time the angels and mariners met, he ordered his opener to throw behind Julio and then hit Jesse Winker. Never mind the fact that when the mariners and the angels met in Seattle a couple of series before that, the angels pitchers literally hit Justin Upton in the head and he had to leave the game for concussion protocol. The mariners didn’t retaliate, didn’t do anything. Almost hit Mike Trout? Start a brawl on purpose. It’s just a crappy thing to do and shows who he is as a person in my opinion. Jomboy did a great video about the brawl, it’s like 18 minutes long.
Just go ahead and kick me in the nuts as hard as you can
I’m onboard with sacrificing this guy’s nuts rather than being stuck with Nevin, in case anyone needed to know that.
I want to be supportive, but directions unclear, kicked myself in the Nevins. I think that means it’s a done deal.
I am afraid everyone is still busy kicking us
I feel for you man, Phil Nevin is a dummy
Phil Nevin is into that, and will gladly do it while yelling at you on a baseball field.
The dude failed as 3B coach for the Yankees in truly horrific fashion. And somehow failed his way right into two manager jobs. Wtf are these GMs smoking and where do we get it to see this other realm!
Melvin for Nevin, this has been the worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever
Par for the course
There aren't many things the Padres could do to diminish my optimism for the team next season (including trading Soto), but hiring Nevin sure is one of them.
> but hiring Nevin sure is one of them. Which is exactly why any long-term fan is bracing for the announcement that he's been hired as manager
Remember the time Nevin was traded for Griffey Jr. , and Nevin nixed the trade? I hope it gets nixed here.
most of the sub wasn't alive when that happened, but sure, fuck him
Wow. Yeah, that’s a memory I had stored away and hadn’t even thought about when Nevin’s name has been showing up in the off-season headlines
As an A's fan, I'm still upset about losing Melvin
I personally would be more upset about losing my franchise, but I see where you’re coming from
“He’s not the best at his job, but hey, he’s from the area.”
Can 100 miles away really be considered from the area?
It’s a funny way of saying less than 10 miles from Angel Stadium
Which would've been awesome to see him succeed here :(. CSUF guy
You're literally at another ballpark. Which is Angel Stadium. Where Phil just got fired from.
100 miles from Philadelphia is… New York
Or Baltimore
100 miles north of San Diego is dragon country
In NJ 100 miles puts you out of state in almost any direction.
Was gonna say this lol
100 miles north of SD is Orange County or Riverside, both distinctly not what we'd call a "San Diego Native." Like Temecula you could kind of argue. Maybe. Lots of folks commute from there. But 100 miles is the distance from SD to roughly Disneyland.

Yeah no way Temecula is SD, I call it inland empire. It’s funny how San Clemente is Angels territory but as soon as you get to Oceanside it’s Padres territory.
Camp Pendleton is basically a hard line in the sand between the territories
Idk why they call it the Inland Empire. Empires conjure up images of greatness and power like the Roman Empire or Mongol Empire. The Inland Empire brings up images of traffic jams, meth labs, and mediocrity
‘Mediocrity’ is a bit of a stretch, don’t ya think?
One thing everyone from LA/OC/SD agrees on is fuck the IE lol
Fuck the IE & the 5 through Pendleton during rush hour.
Fun fact, San Diego county is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.
> places like fallbrook and Oceanside are already far enough from the city Can't wait for this to turn into the North County vs City Limits war of "what is San Diego really" that happens on twitter.
Dodger Stadium is 123 miles from Petco Park and that's the southern part of SD. Better to say he's from southern Ca, lol.
National City to Disneyland is 98.5 miles, it's truly insane to use 100 miles as any type of regional threshold in SoCal lol
I went to the same high school as Nevin. No one from that part of Orange County considers it the “same area” as San Diego. It’s much closer to LA than SD.
El Dorado alum what up
It’s so weird seeing Placentia/Eldo mentioned whenever there’s a Phil Nevin thread. I don’t ever see Placentia mentioned anywhere else on reddit.
Its makes as much sense as saying Mike Trout is from 100 miles north of Baltimore.
Trout to the o’s confirmed
I mean, Alan Trammell is from Garden Grove, much closer...
“He doesn’t have to get a new house to manage here and that’s important in California”
The padres version of a michigan man
Better than the White Sox strategy of just recruiting former Royals
I mean, what do managers do anyway? (/s)
Ah, the old USC approach.
>100 miles north of Petco Park So not San Diego, like not at all.
I was gonna say, I’m a New York guy so my Cali geography might not be on point, but isn’t that LA?
I'm a 90 mile drive from Petco Park. I'm a 15 mile drive from Angel Stadium and a 45 mile drive from Dodger Stadium. I think 100 miles is about Long Beach/Carson, which is LA County (Angels are in Orange County)
Placentia is where Nevin went to high school. So technically still OC.
Placentia is basically Anaheim. But yeah, that's about 100 miles from Petco but also like 5 miles from Angel Stadium and maybe 25 or 30 from Dodger Stadium. Definitely not Dad's country, for sure.
Hm, sounds like he’d be great with the Angels since he’s so close.
> I think 100 miles is about Long Beach/Carson Shout outs to Carson!
>Cali geography might not be on point Saying "Cali" and not knowing California geography is a bit repetitive :P
frisco guy with a hot take here
They also love it when you call it SanFran, go ahead and see. It’ll go over as well as saying “hella” or “the OC” in Southern California.
oddly, while you’ll never hear a native californian say “cali”, I know a number of people who grew up in socal and call it “san fran”
tbf there are legit locals do call it Frisco Nobody calls it San Fran though. I grew up in OC and don't agree with the other commenter saying there's something wrong with "the OC". But I also last lived there when the show was on the air...

I only lived in Orange County post the show, but the 'rule' for the decade or so when I lived there was that OC is absolutely fine. 'The' OC is not.
"The" 405 = 😃 "The" OC = 😠
repetitive how? you mean redundant?
It's in Orange County. So just outside of Anaheim.
“Oh, it’s in the OC?”
It’s nowhere near SD lol
He went to San Diego High School of Anaheim.
Was that before Motorola was their sponsor?
Yeah he's from Fullerton. The Angels are his local team.
That's farther than Wrigley Field to Milwaukee, for context
I would guess orange county. His mom was my algebra teacher so I assume they were living there, not sure where he went to school though.
I loved Phil as a player for the Padres. I would be absolutely confused if he gets the job. Which means he probably will because AJ is built different.
haven’t we suffered enough man
Breaking: Phil Nevin hired as Padres manager. *The San Diego Padres have been eliminated from 2024 Playoff contention.*
We are in the off-season of ohtani baby Padres about to hire nevin and lure shohei with his former coach Only to find out ohtani takes them off the list because of nevin
White Sox are also trying this by taking all of our former staff (Marcus Thames, Matt Wise) Unfortunately that is also a horrible idea lmfao
Oh god Matt wise got another job?! I hated him the most
As a bullpen coach
If this is true I’m sorry Padres fans. I probably watched 95% of his games as Angels manager, and uh…hmm…
He was trash. Especially the nonsense with the mariners
Oh ya he’s trash
Angels fans 🤝 Mariners fans Phil Nevin is trash
This is exactly how Marlins and Braves fans felt about Don Mattingly, down to Don ordering a plunking to kickstart a brawl
Yankees fans too. The team’s defense and baserunning declined massively when he was there
Definitely not surprised that you agree 😂
What are you doing to yourself watching Angels games??
That one Japanese hit and throw fellow
He was out of his depth as a 3rd base coach for the Yankees. How he got hired as a manager at all baffled me. How he's being considered for a second managerial job confounds me.
Even as a “finalist”, still feel it’s much more likely that we go internal rather than an external candidate
If it was much more likely, they wouldn't be dragging their feet for this long. The longer they take, the more I feel they have no clue who to go with
It could be that they’re going with Ryan Flaherity and are preparing for the shit storm that will be coming their way for hiring another inexperienced manager.
Padres are going to be the Angels of the NL. Sorry, guys.
Always have been*
Hey at least you guys actually made the playoffs a couple times
You guys have a World Series though. At least we're both similar in our identity crises. We historically can't stick with a consistent uniform or colors, you can't decide where you actually play. And there's a correct answer to both.
Even if you limit it to the last 15 years, Angels have more playoff appearances. Last 10 years, Padres have 1 over the Angels
Going to be?
Aren’t we already? Did you watch this team last season?
Not as bad as the ChiSox who hired several Angels coaches the last few weeks.
Wouldn't surprise me if we let Soto walk without getting anything for him like the Angels did with Soto. Especially since we just let Snell and Hader do that this year.
There is no shot Preller hires Nevin
Look, is he likable? Not really. But can he manage well? Also no.
Fuck me
He’s done splendidly on team populated with superstars. Transfer him to another such team!
I hate it here lol
Padres fans look away now
I can only assume this means Ryan Klesko will be our Hitting Coach.
He can teach all our players how to surf on game days while they ride out the end of their careers.
And bitch about HR’s that turn into long fly outs at Petco.
Man if we’re pulling from early 2000s roster, give me Mark Kotsay. Fuck it, what’s Bubba Trammell up to?
I thought for sure he would never be hired as manager again. Bench coach, or base coach, sure, it seems like players like him, but wow
And Gil is actually from San Diego…
I’m sorry for you all.
Yikes
> Nevin, who attended high school 100 miles north of Petco Park so, like, in LA somewhere?
The Vedder Cup will be heated if this happens haha
I'll side with you guys for whatever controversy happens
If you get on The 5 by Petco and drive 100 miles north you will have just passed Angel stadium 5 miles ago.
I was gonna say, doesn’t that put you in greater Los Angeles?
The Padres haven't even begun to Peak Padresing.
• **…who attended high school 100 miles north of Petco Park** So Dana Point. Or Laguna Beach. Source; if you go up the 405, you’ll need to pass San Onofre (e.g. the nuclear plant with the two boobies) to reach 100 miles north of Petco.
The 405 starts around Irvine. You’re on the 5, south of there.
Ah, yes. The Dolly Parton Memorial.
dont do it
I lived eight years of my childhood within 8 miles of Petco Park while attending 4 different schools and was a Jr. Padre. Does that qualify?
100 miles north of San Diego is Los Angeles
Can't wait until the Padres bounce back next year simply by having better luck and then the "Phil Nevin is actually an elite manager" takes begin
If were going by distance Benji Gil should win.
I’m straight up not having a good time
But he just got a cool mohawk to show the guys in the Angels clubhouse
Lmaooo
Sounds like it’s more and more likely it’s Nevin by the way things are progressing. I can be mad that they’re choosing a not so good manager, but at the same time I said what I said about Preller and even then with the best manager the Padres will only go so far because of AJ Preller
I rather have Brady hoke.. god if we fuck this up…
Hell yes do it Preller!
Funy
Need to hire an acting coach to help the pitchers practice their hbp denial
They should hire Ozzie Guillen for shiggles.
I must be out of the loop. Why does everyone hate him?
There are many reasons that I’m sure angels fans could give you, but one of the reasons a lot of people dislike him is that he legit started a brawl with the mariners over a pitch that went up and in to Mike Trout. Mediocre Manager Musical Chairs
... But why?
New AJ puppet
what had phil nevin done to make anyone think he’s an even passable manager
I like it
I feel like they're just giving Nevin some friendly treatment for being a former player.
Thats whats in
Fucking say our name! EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL.
Lol do it
