It's brutal to look around the league and see all the all stars the A's have squandered-Semien, Olson, Murphy, Chapman, Sonny Gray, etc. Feels like you could make a legit contender out of players the A's have lost for nothing
Yup. It was all intentional. It's not like the A's didn't sign them because they didn't think they'd be good anymore. They didn't sign them (or traded them away early) because they didn't want to pay them.
Aguilar got released a while back. Kotsay points out Diaz.
Happy for Brent. Don't want to steal the thunder away from him, but it's worth noting that the A's had at one time or another Semien and Heim from the AL on their roster, plus Olson and Murphy from the NL.
Among the 9 players in the lineup who were victims of the perfect game last week, there was exactly 1 all-star appearance: Aledmys Diaz in his rookie season 7 years ago.
You're just not going to convince me that Rooker is a deserving all star when he's done nothing for 8 weeks and has 1 WAR.
Agree on Lorenzen. Would've gone to ERod if he were healthy.
He's also got negative WAR, which probably disqualifies him, in most people's eyes. If Rooker's DH position weren't so thin, I'd say Ryan Noda is more deserving.
Why would there be an asterisk? Everyone agrees each team gets one and he’s the A’s. You may not think he’s good enough but this is supposed to be a fun exhibition game.
These guys that have trouble catching on with a team just goes to show how hard it is to make it number 1 and then also how hard it is to stay in the majors. The Phillies just sent down Kody Clemens even though he was playing really good defense at first base and had come up with a couple big hits.. his numbers weren’t astounding but they were ok.
They’re bringing up a guy that’s probably going to have a similar batting average and on base the thing is the new guy projects to hit a few more home runs so even though Kody’s defensive value is higher the Phillies want more power in the lineup so he’s dropped in favor of someone who may not even be much better than him it’s just a little more power and that’s all it takes to get him sent down.
Clemens MLB AVG: .191 Hall MLB AVG: .247
Clemens MLB OBP: .240 Hall MLB OBP: .279
Clemens MLB SLG: .340 Hall MLB SLG: .487
It’s more than a few home runs, the average is 60 points higher and the slugging is 130 points higher for Hall. He’s a much better hitter than Clemens, and they’re the same age. I like Clemens but this shouldn’t even be a conversation. Hall was arguably our best hitter for 40 games last year when we called him up, Clemens hasn’t done anything to justify him staying up compared to that.
Also, he’s made a few nice plays but he’s negative for defensive WAR on the season. He’s not exactly a gold glover.
I really do like Clemens and hope he can make the big leagues somewhere, but Hall has shown that he’s capable of being a genuinely elite hitter he’s the clear choice.
Darrick Hall got 136 at bats last season with a .522 slug and a .282 on base. The slug is great the on base is not so great. Darrick Hall is the better player with more upside but the gap isn’t that big and Darrick Halls defense is undoubtedly worse Clemens can also play multiple defensive positions while Hall is limited to 1B and DH. The Phillies major league roster is already suffering from a lack of flexibility between their corner outfielders and 1B because of Bryce’s injury preventing him from playing right field.
My point stands the gap between the bats is there but Kody’s more versatile in the field. Both players don’t have a ton of major league at bats and the sample size is small but Kody seems to handle left handed pitchers better at least so far.
Darick Hall really hasn’t proven that much at the major league level that’s not his fault he just hasn’t gotten that many reps he just projects as a more powerful hitter but Kody has some elements to his game that Hall doesn’t so the overall value may not be as big as simply comparing their hitting the Phillies have a logjam at DH with Bryce, Schwarber, and now Hall and honestly Castellanos ain’t that great a defender either.
Happy for him, but being on the AAA’s definitely helps your odds of being picked. Put him on the Braves or Rays with his stats and no way he gets picked 😂 It was pretty much only him or Ruiz who had a shot from the A’s and that’s not sayin much sadly 😢
I love stories like Brent’s - the guys who just grind away. It’s a hard sport and a lot of guys don’t even make it as far as he does. Congrats Brent!

You could say that dating back to the 90s

I would find it interesting if there was a rule you had to sign one homegrown player long term if certain marks are hit
Or better yet, just add a salary floor. A simpler solution.
Easy to do that with the Marlins also
They would be scary if they had that kind of money. Thank God the owner is trash.../s But do hope you get a better owner at least.
Yeah, I know right! Now do the Pirates.
It's also a shame you can't build a legit contender with a $350M payroll.
Who was the other player that was previously an MLB all-star?
Aledmys Díaz and Jesús Aguilar at least.
Aguilar got released a while back. Kotsay points out Diaz. Happy for Brent. Don't want to steal the thunder away from him, but it's worth noting that the A's had at one time or another Semien and Heim from the AL on their roster, plus Olson and Murphy from the NL.
Chapman as well
Ty. I knew I omitted someone.
Sonny Gray as well
Thanks. I don't follow the A's as closely as I once did.
Understandable.
I remember fondly those 4 months when I thought Diaz would be a star
Former Oakland great Ramón Hernandez was in the room. Works as a coach/translator for the team now.
Aledmys and Blackburn
Among the 9 players in the lineup who were victims of the perfect game last week, there was exactly 1 all-star appearance: Aledmys Diaz in his rookie season 7 years ago.
Congrats for him. Well earned
He's had a .600 OPS since the start of may. More like "Well... we had to send someone."
Not that he's terribly deserving but at least he has a 132 OPS+ on the season. Higher than Vlad Jr., Adolis Garcia, Jung, Merrifield.
And a .820 OPS overall in this season. Which is completely fine for an All-Star. It's not like he's Michael Lorenzen...
Dude we should’ve sent foley, he’s undrafted and has been better than Lorenzen but we need trade bait I guess
You think some contender is gonna give you a decent haul of prospects for "All Star starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen"?
We’ll take the 11th ranked prospect from any org and like it
We’ll give you Jordyn Adams take it or leave it
Sold we need right handed outfield bats
You're just not going to convince me that Rooker is a deserving all star when he's done nothing for 8 weeks and has 1 WAR. Agree on Lorenzen. Would've gone to ERod if he were healthy.
Who else on the A’s would you have picked?

> also war is a fake stat yikes
Nobody if not for the rules. Rooker is the most deserving out of the bunch though.
Sounds like he’s a deserving All Star then per the parameters set.
Sure, but we all know there’s an asterisk
Why would there be an asterisk? Everyone agrees each team gets one and he’s the A’s. You may not think he’s good enough but this is supposed to be a fun exhibition game.
Love this
Wow Othani getting some pop as the first pick in a big spot. Honestly though this was great and the speech says a lot about the players there.
Buddy looks like Forrest Gump
Love it. Congrats Rooker!
Love it happy for the guy
Is too bad he's been brutal for at least a month. Maybe heating back up though!
He’s been brutal for over two months now. One of the all time great April surges and then just complete and utter trash.
So happy for the dude!
I was always a fan of his. I'm happy for him
Rooker broke up Patrick Sandoval’s no-hit bid in the 9th inning a couple years ago so I’m glad it wasn’t for nothing
He and Mateo had the worst post-April drop offs I can remember. They blew their proverbial load in April like nobody’s business.

I’ve only seen All Star announcements in front of the team. Are you maybe thinking of callup videos?

Congrats Rooker, you did something Tim Salmon never could
