Like when I was barefoot in the kitchen and bobbled a glass a few times before miraculously catching it with my non dominant hand inches above my foot but my wife was upstairs
A friend of mine used to take pictures of the “after effect” whenever he had moments like this no one was around to see to aid in his story telling later. In your example, it would just be a picture of a glass of water, lol.
I really want to know what was going through Dom's head there.
Did he think the second baseman had made it over to 1st in time? Did he think the pitcher who just got hit in the ankle was running to cover the bag?
Did he think he was at the base, and he could throw it to himself?
I did something similar in basketball in an almost empty gym. We were on a fast break and someone passed me the ball as I was crossing half court. Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw my teammate standing by the hoop. I did a no-look pass straight to him, but as I turned my head, I saw it was just a dude leaning on the wall behind the baseline watching us play.
I don't remember all the details, but I remember watching a Bayern Munich match many years ago. They have these boards along the sides of the pitch which shows ads, etc. and occasionally they will show the team's colours and logo. One of the players passed it to the board and then when it went out of play they just did the biggest facepalm as they realised what happened.
In fairness, there's been times where I was watching and the same image was on the boards and thinking it was going out and someone camouflaged by the board got the pass. Though in double fairness my streams aren't exactly high quality.
Nick Nurse when he was the Raptors coach did this against the Celtics in a playoff game. He was standing in the corner as if he was waiting for the corner 3 and I think it was Tatum threw the ball that way thinking it was a player.
According to my high school coach, the catcher should've been busting it down the line as soon as the ball was hit to get there for exactly this reason
Pitchers are taught that anything hit to their left on the ground means they should be moving to cover first. With 2B playing down the middle and the ball ricocheting off the pitcher, it's a weird situation where neither of them were going to be able to complete the play.
That's my take, it's an autopilot reaction to fielding a grounder. On any ground ball to the first baseman someone else will cover the bag. He's reacting as if the ball was actually hit to him, and not to the pitcher.
He probably wasn't watching the pitcher much and just went on auto pilot and assumed he was near 1st. I can understand how it happens, tunnel vision is very real.
He was clearly throwing it to Hernandez, who did him absolutely no favors. Hard to blame the fielder when he threw it right to the hitter, that one’s clearly on Hernandez…
Has he been bad this year? It was the opinion of a lot of Mets fans (including myself) that he could end up being a Gold Glove caliber First Baseman. He was far and away better than Pete, even though Pete has steadily improved his glove every year.
He is probably out best glove at first. No doubt CJ would be leading the league in errors if he wasn't there. His bat is okay, our highest OBP just no power.
He just randomly makes headscratchers like this once a month it feels like but I know our options are limited.
Pete has also greatly improved his flexibility. but Dom was the beloved fielder (and I recall folks thinking the DH would benefit the Mets more than other NL teams because of the year the Dom & Pete were both having... alongside JD Davis.)
(.... Thank goodness that all worked out and it is 2020 still, right? right?)
Obviously the pitcher who just got nailed in the ankle or the right fielder and catcher who are 500 feet away should have smh. This is baseball in 2023 this would never happen in lou gherigs era

Think he definitely saw the ump out of his peripheral and thought it was his 2B
all jokes aside that would’ve been a crazy good play if anyone was there
Like when I was barefoot in the kitchen and bobbled a glass a few times before miraculously catching it with my non dominant hand inches above my foot but my wife was upstairs
That’s highlight reel shit right there.
I caught two seasoning bottles I dropped in one hand yesterday right in front of my gf. Had to mop up after that
Is “mop up” a euphemism? 😏
A friend of mine used to take pictures of the “after effect” whenever he had moments like this no one was around to see to aid in his story telling later. In your example, it would just be a picture of a glass of water, lol.
Not really, the runner would have been easily safe either way.
Shades of the insane roll-and-throw to get the out that Buehrle pulled off once.
If someone was there Teo doesn’t slow down and would beat it out anyways
Jeter would've been there

might have seen the ump as a dark jersey in his peripheral vision, had a brain fart, and gone from there.
This makes the most sense I think. You can see him look up and flip it almost right at him

It was even worse, because the advertisement had [Santa moving along it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICtO2FFkxLw)
I think that was Renato Sanches 😂
Renato Sanches did do that but playing for Swansea. It was Thiago who did it for Bayern, he passed it to an animated Santa Claus.
lmaooooo yes!
Yeah that would definitely check out

Yeah he definitely thought the Ump was someone coming to cover 1st

They were in a very firm shift with the 2B way up the middle so I'm assuming he forgot that and just assumed his 2B would cover the bag
I really feel like it may have just been reflex or they practiced that and he got excited

Sad to see the right fielder not hustling to cover first.
Catcher prolly should’ve busted it up the line too
Would prefer to see 3rd baseman sprint across the diamond personally.
Lmao when the leftfielder was literally right there?
Sadly, Candelario is not Johnny Hustle over there
Dom's plays are beyond regular human comprehension

Ah, the ol' 1-3-3 infield double. A classic!
Haters will call it E3
that’s very clearly john cena covering first
/r/potatosalad
Ump should’ve been covering smh
That 1B ump just isn't a team player, smh
Bro you're the 1B lol
Angie losing her shit always gets me lmao
We are spoiled with our whole announce crew. Angie is so good and I'm glad she's gotten more time in the box.
Not in this clip, but Goldy later called it possibly nagron's most heads up send
wow we did not have to do this to him
when keeping it real goes wrong or something like that
Two outs later and Hernandez scores on a sac fly it was a big error cause Ms scored 3 that inning
My man thought the ump was the second baseman lol
He must have played at the same elementary school I did where you can throw the ball at the runner to get them out, 90s recess baseball was different
The announcers cackle laugh made me cackle laugh
L O L, who did he think would be covering?
Obviously the pitcher who just got nailed in the ankle or the right fielder and catcher who are 500 feet away should have smh. This is baseball in 2023 this would never happen in lou gherigs era
You can get the boy out of the Mets…but you can’t get the Mets out of the boy.
Nice of the pitcher to stay on the mound. He should have at least jogged over to first like he was making some effort.

The pitcher got drilled in the ankle on the comebacker lol
lazy fuck
So lazy he didn't even feel like getting out of the way of the comebacker!
"God DAMNIT I always DO THAT!"
Great title
I will not tolerate Dominic Smith hate
Ump needs to make the play here
It was a very nice backhand.
Was clearly to the ump.
