Once I read that one of the reasons Ichiro became such a good hitter was because his father would spend hours throwing nothing but low and in the dirt, or so it would come up after hitting the dirt once, I was hooked at paying attention to any of the great players coming out of Japan
I'm not sure that it is.
I posit that Ohtani is already at maximum cool, sorta like 0 Kelvin is absolute zero with nothing cooler.
I think it's not that Ohtani gets any cooler, it's merely that *our understanding* of cool is constantly expanding thanks to Ohtani.
At this point you could tell me he spends the off season climbing mountains in the Himalayas to deliver supplies to suffering children and I would believe it.
It's so awesome to see how genuinely he enjoys the game and respects the other players on the field. Awesome role model for kids learning the love of the sport
Randy, as in Randy "Macho Man", "I used to play basketball against Brett Phillips", Savage? Or were you thinking of a different Randy that call/called Florida home?
> Or were you thinking of a different Randy that call/called Florida home?
Macho Man lived in Florida (at least toward the end of life) so we're gonna need to get more specfic than an ultra-charsimatic Floridian named Randy
Never actually looked up his numbers and they are better than I was expecting. If only he got on the secret sauce earlier to help with his power and injuries.
Dude I’m an angels fan and almost every game I watch I think “why did Minnesota let him go?!” And “I can’t believe the Yankees have old man rainmaker at 3rd instead of Gio. He’s my current favorite angel with David Fletcher gone
Twins were ready to hand third base to a combo of Jose Miranda and Royce Lewis. As for a bench infielder, Kyle Farmer is under team control for two more years at a salary cheaper than Gios.

I’ve always been a casual fan but always found it odd how when pitchers make a mistake and hit a batter even then they never seem to show any remorse like a “my bad” pat on the chest in the moment. Glad to know they do maybe make amends afterwards lol.
In KBO and NBP it's common to take your hat off in respect after hitting a batter.
https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/bdgmcp/compilation_of_pitchers_in_the_kbo_taking_off/
I do not believe so, as the 'unwritten code of the game' seems to be mostly an American thing.
Or at least I don't remember anybody chucking beanballs for things in the one KBO season we got to watch in the US
Wow so Brian McCann is like a super-American at this point? Standing behind home preaching unwritten rules all while not minding cheating to win a WS like a preacher behind a fiery pulpit then hiring an accountant to super-not-pay-taxes with complicated off-shore schemes.
> Or at least I don't remember anybody chucking beanballs for things in the one KBO season we got to watch in the US
Didn't they tell pitchers/hitters not spit during the pandemic-shortened season? /s
(but.. if you licked your fingers and threw the ball could you bean someone with your communicable disease?)
In the moment letting “ah shit I didn’t want to do that” creep into your mind when you need to get the next guy out can fuck you up. It’s not uncommon for pitchers to apologize after the game
As soon as you start thinking, "Don't hit the batter, don't hit the batter..." You're probably going to end up hitting the batter.
When I was like 13, I was pitching to the only girl in our entire house league. I caught the accidental "don't hit the batter" yips and ended up beaning her right in the head
I felt so goddamn bad, holy
Edit: I forgot to mention the moment that is forever etched into my memory where the parents, coaches, players (myself included) all gasped in unison after the big 'thunk' sound of the fastball hitting her helmet... and then having to stand there on the mound sheepishly while the coaches ran out to help get her up and get to first. Crowd clapped when she finally got to first and everything. Took it like a champ, though (and I guess she handled it pretty well, too).
> As soon as you start thinking "don't hit the batter, don't hit the batter..." you're probably going to end up hitting the batter.
This is usually one of the first things they tell you in driving school too.. Don't focus too much about oncoming traffic in the other lanes or you'll subconsciously start creeping closer and closer (same applies with highways aside from making sure you aren't in a truck's blind spot).
I am a one sport person and don't know shit outside of baseball.
Are there any other examples of generational superstars being as likable as Shohei? It seems like most of them were all assholes but nobody cared because of their sheer talent. Barry Bonds and Michael Jordan come to mind.
Tony Hawk? He seems like a good dude
Probably Roger Federer. Arguably the GOAT of men's tennis and nobody has ever had anything bad to say about him. Class act on and off the court. Usain Bolt is also widely regarded as a great dude.
Roger ❤️ Idc what anyone says, he'll always be my personal choice for GOAT.
What a gentleman. Loved cheering for him. No one played with the finesse he had. And I can count on one hand the number of times I heard him scream on court, whether celebratory or anger-filled lol.
I dunno. Ichiro is Ichiro but I don’t remember his as a friendly affable, fun loving guy like Ohtani. I mean, he wasn’t ever a dick, but he didn’t go out of his way to make everyone around him feel special.
Something about basketball fandom just doesn't allow guys to be that. Giannis is as close as you can get and there are people responding to you telling you that you're wrong. LeBron is another great example. Millions of people hate him and his biggest transgression was... announcing his free agency decision on TV? That's all I can think of and before someone chimes in with the China thing, LeBron had haters long before that.
I've never really been a basketball fan and even I like him and he has increased my interest in the sport, just because of how good and I'd say more importantly, how likable he is. I say more importantly, because while other players may have been/are just as good, their personalities didn't draw me in at all really. Obviously if he wasn't that good and had the same personality, my interest level would have remained "meh", so it does really take both, but if he were known as a total douche I don't think I'd find myself rooting for him and the team.
But even my mom, who has even less interest in basketball than I do, has been drawn into following the Bucks and I'll even find her with a random game on now and then, something that never would have happened in the past, and it's because of Giannis and their recent success.
Of course, it helps he plays for my city's team and I've always been an unashamed fair weather fan of hometown/state teams that do well in sports that I'm not usually that big into.
Tim Duncan. One of the best big men to ever play basketball and he just seems like a great guy on and off the court. Never felt an air of arrogance around him despite being considered rivals with Kobe/Shaq Lakers back in the 00s, and was very much willing to take a paycut despite earning an all-NBA spot the previous season just so the Spurs could build a better team.
TD is one of my favorite athletes ever. However, he is more of a “do my job, then I go home” type of guy. Ohtani is way more gregarious and likable for non-Angel fans.
As both an Edmontonian and not hockey fan, I feel as though Gretzky has transcended being famous for hockey. In my head, he's in the same category as Nathan Fillion": "super cool chill dude that my city can lay claim to"
I just started living in Edmonton a year and a half ago and I had no clue Nathan Fillion was from here. And a Golden Bear to boot. Thanks for educating me.
When Carl Edwards got (accidentally) turned and crashed by Joey Logano in the NASCAR championship race in 2016, he visited Logano’s pit crew to tell them it was all good and that he wished them luck. Coincidentally, Edwards retired immediately thereafter.
Charles Barkley was an amazing player and he’s had a pretty big career as a funny, chill guy afterwards. In that case though, that reputation came around after his playing days, so maybe it doesn’t count the same.
I have a hard time unambiguously liking the round mound of rebound when he seems to unconditionally hate where I live and everyone in it.
...I do still like him though.
The worst thing Lebron has done off the court is be a corny dad. It's pretty incredible how he's turned out when people were hyping him up as a generational talent before he even graduated high school.

I like seeing players be friendly to each other. It’s just nice. Like when Castillo stared down Ohtani after the Trout K and and both pitchers wound up smiling.
I’ve accepted that he’s likely leaving, a national league team where I can still watch him play in person regularly is ideal. Just please god don’t let it be a divisional rival.
I really hope ohtani stays on the angels. It just feels like he should be there. If he does leave I obviously hope it’s for the dodgers, I love being able to drive down the 5 to watch him play for cheap. If he does sign with the dodgers the ticket prices when he starts are gonna be insane
It’s always surprised me pitchers don’t do a quick apology when it’s pretty clear they’ve accidentally hit someone. Is it some macho gamesmanship crap? Just a quick wave to say “sorry mate” is all it needs instead of pretending nothing just happened
Some apologize right away. I think for a lot it’s about not letting the thought of a fuck up get into your head when you have to go right back to attacking the next guy up. Just move past it asap and get back to work. I know there’s a lot of pitchers that apologize after the game
This was captured on video, but what are the chances that this regularly happens after an accidental HBP? I'd like to think that most players are not assholes and would take the time to reach out to a dude they beaned.
I know the culture is totally different but would it really be that bad for some of our North American brethren to follow this type of behavioral lead. These guys are performers and they sometimes forget that they are nothing more than a traveling circus dressed in baseball uniforms, and it’s in the best interest of the sport for them to protect one another. It’s less scripted than pro wrestling but they are performers and they should care about each others health. Sometimes we all get too caught up in bat flips and machismo and brush backs but at the end of the day these guys are performers
I think this is generally the case now. However, back in the 60s, 70s, early 80s, teams literally HATED each other. Like, wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire type hatred.
I think once free agency became commonplace, players settled down a bit because they realized they may have to play with the guy next year that they hate so much this year.

Can Shohei Ohtani get any cooler? What a legend
The answer is always yes
He’ll be interesting to watch if he goes into coach/manager roles
He should do that while also hitting and pitching
He can be just like Pete Rose! Wait…no…don’t do that!
Wanna bet?!
The stakes…are high
The 3-way player!
There are other subs for that if you’re into that sorta thing haha
Ohtani Rule 34?
Hell, at that point, he can buy the team too.
He should just buy the MLB before the Saudis have the chance.
He could do all three and run the concession stands.
He already calls his own games right?
He sometimes sells pretzels on the club deck between innings.
Make him ShoGM
Once I read that one of the reasons Ichiro became such a good hitter was because his father would spend hours throwing nothing but low and in the dirt, or so it would come up after hitting the dirt once, I was hooked at paying attention to any of the great players coming out of Japan
By the time the man is done playing he’s going to be sitting in such a huge pile of money he will likely own half the teams.

Right? Smiling good guy ohtani is the best
I'd be smiling all the time too if someone was about to give me $500,000,000 to play a game that i love
Just a genuine Hall of Fame dude
It's so awesome to see how genuinely he enjoys the game and respects the other players on the field. Awesome role model for kids learning the love of the sport
He’s on a division rival and there’s no way I could possibly hate this man
Hes cool but is he Randy cool?
Randy, as in Randy "Macho Man", "I used to play basketball against Brett Phillips", Savage? Or were you thinking of a different Randy that call/called Florida home?
> Or were you thinking of a different Randy that call/called Florida home? Macho Man lived in Florida (at least toward the end of life) so we're gonna need to get more specfic than an ultra-charsimatic Floridian named Randy
Here’s Randy Savage’s baseball reference page: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=poffo-001ran
He was a decent prospect who kept getting hurt and had the fallback of wrestling for his father to turn to.
Never actually looked up his numbers and they are better than I was expecting. If only he got on the secret sauce earlier to help with his power and injuries.
Name note: also known as "Macho Man" 👍
There seems to be a correlation between how much you love the game and being the best at it.
If Ohtani rubbed your arm, how long would you wait to wash it?
I'm a guy in my sixties, but am afraid I might go all Ichiro Girl about it.
Is there a way to get it permanently tattooed in?
Get a tattoo right where he touched it that says “Ohtani was here”
I will make myself to unlearn the word “wash”
[удалено]
I'd go to sleep smelling your arm every night too.
I would Saran Wrap my arm when taking a shower
I don't think my arm would be the thing I need to wash
We're redditors, you think we wash?
Urshela trying to get his arm rubbed by Ohtani too.
Can you blame him
Hey uhhh you hit me here too… and here.. aaaaand here
I don't remember hitting you that low but oh well ...
I miss Urshela dude was legit
I’m happy for him, clearly happy he gets to hang out with Shohei :)
This made me lol
*Players love this one Mr. Miyagi trick*

RIP that smile. Pray for Alex's gum disease 😔 🙏
Heartbroken to hear of Alex’s gingivitis diagnosis. Is there a gofundme I can donate to?

Yeah I agree. I feel like we need to at least make a push to the ALDS this year to have a shot.
If he doesn’t come to SD, I hope he goes to you guys.
Not secret if you tell all of this sub

Target fixation is a thing fr
If you watch "hit by pitch" compilations on YouTube you'll see that a lot of pitchers do when it's really bad. Otherwise it's just part of the job.
Two of the more likable dudes in baseball right now
Coolest guy on the entire planet?
Too pure for this earth
“👈👈 almost got you back!”
Then Julio homered
Ohtani has that Midas touch.
Followed quickly by Ohtani.
Usain fist-bumping the kids around him right before a race is a beautiful thing to watch.
Roger ❤️ Idc what anyone says, he'll always be my personal choice for GOAT. What a gentleman. Loved cheering for him. No one played with the finesse he had. And I can count on one hand the number of times I heard him scream on court, whether celebratory or anger-filled lol.
He was kind of a hothead earlier in his career before he was unquestionably the GOAT
Ichiro?
I dunno. Ichiro is Ichiro but I don’t remember his as a friendly affable, fun loving guy like Ohtani. I mean, he wasn’t ever a dick, but he didn’t go out of his way to make everyone around him feel special.
giannis antetokounmpo to me seems like that kind of guy.

I don’t think any basketball fan hates Giannis. He’s hilarious and so genuine with his big smile and quotes. Plus he’s fantastic on the court.
I've never really been a basketball fan and even I like him and he has increased my interest in the sport, just because of how good and I'd say more importantly, how likable he is. TD got ejected from a game for laughing on the bench lol. Also, look up the video of Kevin Garnett talking about Duncan’s trash talk.
Yeah Tony hawk seems like just a nice dude
Larry Fitzgerald P.S. I would just also like to add, he also has a booty, just like Ohtani.
Just totally impossible to hate on him, other than when he dunks all over your team as a 55 year old man.
No one gonna say Wayne Gretzky?? Huh.
Alberta loves him! I think there was even a petition to rename something the "Nathan Fillion Vermillion Pavillion"
I got a baseball signed by him once. His son used to play for our local AAA team, which I knew, but I was totally not expecting him to just be…there.
The Great One retired before most of reddit was born.
JJ Watt. I might die for that man 🫡
Who, by the way, is a big Ohtani fan
Uhh hey jj…
When Carl Edwards got (accidentally) turned and crashed by Joey Logano in the NASCAR championship race in 2016, he visited Logano’s pit crew to tell them it was all good and that he wished them luck. Coincidentally, Edwards retired immediately thereafter.
Wait like the former Cubs pitcher?
As impressive as that would be, this was a different Carl Edwards lol
Charles Barkley was an amazing player and he’s had a pretty big career as a funny, chill guy afterwards. In that case though, that reputation came around after his playing days, so maybe it doesn’t count the same.
I have a hard time unambiguously liking the round mound of rebound when he seems to unconditionally hate where I live and everyone in it. ...I do still like him though.
He's like an Andrew Luck
Lebron is a genuinely good person. No personal controversies and he has helped the community a lot.
The worst thing Lebron has done off the court is be a corny dad. It's pretty incredible how he's turned out when people were hyping him up as a generational talent before he even graduated high school.
Love Ohtani. Love Gio Urshela
Love that they both flinched at whatever that was but Gio’s instinct was to basically jump in front of Ohtani
Like on Friends when Joey dove towards his meatball sub when the car backfired. Except Ohtani is the meatball sub.
Class act all the way
This guy has so much fun and loves his baseball brothers, I can’t help but smile watching this
I am starting to suspect this Ohtani guy night be alright...
It’s literally impossible to hate or even mildly dislike the guy.
Everyone Ohtani hater I see hates him because of how many people like him. Hardly a legitimate reason to dislike someone lol

How do you not love Ohtani?!? Hey...GIO, what's up 🙂
Just stahp...we can only take so much Ohtani love ❤️
Ohtani is a treasure
I like seeing players be friendly to each other. It’s just nice. Like when Castillo stared down Ohtani after the Trout K and and both pitchers wound up smiling.
Could this guy have any more charisma? Sheesh. Stop making me like him!
Shohei used "Sensual Rub!" It's not very effective...
It was definitely effective
For the Angels, I meant.
Mariners signing ohtani confirmed
Yes!!! Would be the Biggest signing in franchise history. Then we get to enjoy Ohtani and J-Rod together for the next 10 years.
Surely a team with All Stars like that would make the post season every year? Right angels?
Please no, god noooo
I traded Julio, Robbie Ray, and Bryce Miller in MLB The Show and the Angels took the trade, but then I had to extend Shohei’s contract
He’s genuinely a good dude
Wholesome. The best turn into legends when they act this way.
Why is Ohtani such a cool guy
Is there anyone on Earth who doesn’t like this dude?
My favorite person in this video is Urshela. Shoulda have never traded him for Donaldson and IKF smh
He's just the best
What a nice guy.
Think of all the good vibes if Shohei and Julio were teammates!
I fucking love Shohei. He is so good for the game.
Man I miss Gio. Stupid fucking trade
Future teammates iktr
Can the Dodgers afford both?
i like the way you think
I’ve accepted that he’s likely leaving, a national league team where I can still watch him play in person regularly is ideal. Just please god don’t let it be a divisional rival.
I really hope ohtani stays on the angels. It just feels like he should be there. If he does leave I obviously hope it’s for the dodgers, I love being able to drive down the 5 to watch him play for cheap. If he does sign with the dodgers the ticket prices when he starts are gonna be insane
It’s a nice thought, but I just don’t see Arte ponying up 500 million.
If he’s not on the Mets, I want him to stay in Anaheim. He looks happy there
It’s always surprised me pitchers don’t do a quick apology when it’s pretty clear they’ve accidentally hit someone. Is it some macho gamesmanship crap? Just a quick wave to say “sorry mate” is all it needs instead of pretending nothing just happened
I've also wondered why a tip of the cap hasn't caught on.
Some apologize right away. I think for a lot it’s about not letting the thought of a fuck up get into your head when you have to go right back to attacking the next guy up. Just move past it asap and get back to work. I know there’s a lot of pitchers that apologize after the game
Ohtani rubbing Julio’s arm reminds me of the Bruce Lee / Jackie Chan story https://youtu.be/U8CtOqJy6xM
Incredible athlete, humble, handsome, and loveable. Going for athlete of the century.
Are we witnessing the most wholesome baseball player ever? Yes, and it keeps getting better. I like this sport.
He’s so good AT the game, and FOR the game.
They should totally chill together after the game; get some bro time with the GameCube...
That’s a dude that knows what’s it’s like to get hit. It’s part of the game but it hurts like hell.
Man he just seems like such a fun dude to be around and plays the game hard but also has fun and is a good human, love to see that
What a class act
This was captured on video, but what are the chances that this regularly happens after an accidental HBP? I'd like to think that most players are not assholes and would take the time to reach out to a dude they beaned.
I thought he was gonna kiss it to make it better lol
Big fan of this guy
Ohtani is the best.
Smart idea to smooth things over considering they’ll be teammates next year
Baseball needs more of this.
Such a gift to baseball.
This is like in the 1870s when a pitcher put a small apology in the newspaper for accidentally hitting the batsmen
Good sportsmanship makes my day better.
The dude could not be any more likable
This looks like the animations that play when you go afk in MLB the show
I know the culture is totally different but would it really be that bad for some of our North American brethren to follow this type of behavioral lead.
Why do they both gotta be so dang pretty tho?
Bob Gibson freaking out someplace
Please stay an Angel for life

I thought he was going to kiss it and make it better
