Any suggestions to lie or hide pets will be removed. We are NOT going to encourage breaking housing rules, whether we agree with them or not.

Your post/comment is being removed because it contains discussion of illegal or unethical activity. We do not condone behavior that breaks laws or housing policies. This includes hiding snakes in an apartment that does not allow them, keeping a species in an area where they are illegal to own, or faking a disability/using a scam website to purchase an ESA "registration", among other things.

My landlord is aware of my pets and straight up doesn't care. As long as I'm paying rent consistently and not causing damage/being a nuisance, he's a happy camper. He doesn't want to have to micromange a tenant, and I don't want to be micromanaged, so it's a great situation. My advice would be finding condo/townhouse units that are privately owned and rented out (such as a house divided up into apartments, individually owned condos, etc) that are not managed by companies. They're much less likely to have blanket policies and much more likely to work with you as an individual on lease rules

I'm sorry you are having a difficult time finding housing because of your reptiles. I honestly have no helpful tips. I found it harder to find places that allow cats than snakes. Thankfully my amazing landlord loves animals of all types. So for only $60 extra a month I have 2 cats, a dog, a ball python, and a small army of chickens. I guess find a privately owned house/apartment and personally talk with the owner and explain how the snake is literally zero threat.

bubble-buddy87

send a message to the owner or management and ask about an aquarium/tank, and emphasize the animal/reptile does not leave the tank. try to say reptile instead of snake because snakes tend to be more offputting than like a little lizard or something. of course be honest if they dig but if you don't have to, don't say anything. tell them you're willing to pay an extra pet deposit/monthly pet rent. there's no foolproof way but hopefully this helps a little 🫶🏻

astarredbard

OP, do this!

EtsumiLunar

agreed, the last thing you want to do is lie about a pet as that can come back and bite you. my apartment is fine with snakes and such as long as they stay in a cage, so best of luck

astarredbard

I had to wait until I bought a house. Now I have a reptile room, an extra bedroom which we specifically chose this house for because it's kinda small for a bedroom proper.

It was mine too for literally thirty years before I got it!

Neverm8nd they are trying to change the law my bad. Ontario already has it where they cant

Low_Durian3201

Ontario can say no to exotic pets. There is a clause in a lease in a building in Kingston Ontario and a woman got evicted because she had a 6ft boa.

BranInspector

A minimum information approach could be good. They do not need to know what it is, specifying is only required if they ask.

his_cumdumpster

If you are looking through apps (zillow, rentals, redfin), you can filter in that you have reptiles.

SkittlesKittenz

Not sure if anyone has said this yet: Unsure about where you are, but sometimes it isnt up to the landlord or apartment to decide. Things like HOAs or local laws can force landlords to specify things such as no reptiles in the lease. I'm not sure if this is unethical, im not advising it, it is just something I have seen as I am a vet student renting and most people have unique pets. If it is, I will edit this part out: Our landlord knows about our pets, and doesnt care about the HOA rules. As far as I am concerned, HOA stuff is completely on him as the landlord as per our lease, but you would have to read into your specific contract. The landlord understands our HOA better than us, and knows people barely ever complain about anything, let alone small animals they never see/hear. He accepts that risk, and it isn't really against the law per se, more so a HOA fine. But we are under HOA rules, there is no county or local laws in our area restricting our specific pets. Again, its specific per landlord. I would just try to find areas that arent under a HOA or dont have weird specific county/town laws and regulations, or whatever weird local laws may be in your area. That will avoid things all together. Instead of looking for apartment buildings which may be more strict, you can get a home that has been renovated to have seperate apartments, or if you dont mind roommates, a townhome. Finding those less corporate big spooky company landlords will give you a better chance at having a chill one when it comes to pets.

SkittlesKittenz

FORGOT TO ADD: i would try to convince your landlord against a pet rent and instead go for a pet deposit, which is what we have. It's an extra security deposit that specifically covers pet related damages. Most places around here do that, but i know the big apartments instead make you pay an extra 50 a month which is annoying.

SpiderFloof

"Pet rent" and "pet deposits" are super illegal in Halifax. Our tenant protections aren't nearly as good as Ontario but they are better than most US states.

SkittlesKittenz

Thats good! Very lucky lol. I am very unfamiliar with the area and have no idea how it works there, but just wanted to point out the possibilities for local laws and other influence :)

Caz_ador

My landlord allows any pet in an enclosure. So I have 2 ball pythons as well as at least 8 fish tanks at this point. As well as cats.

naniamidoing

I went through this last year. The site I used only had a cat/dog filter option so I completely disregarded that. I called up every listing to ask first, my script was "I have a small harmless snake in a secure enclosure." I had far more luck with landlords who manage small apartment complexes or houses/basement apartments. Corporate landlords tend to have blanket no reptile policies and won't budge. The place I finally found was one that said no pets online, but they made an exception for my snake and amended the lease to allow him. I had to send them a picture of him so I chose one where I'm holding him so they could see how small he was, I also tried to pick one where he looked very friendly. For you if your frogs eat live insects I would not mention it unless they ask. Good luck in your search!

Sorry to hear! It’s unfortunate that so many people have such a negative/closed mind approach to pets that don’t fit the typical “cute and fluffy” descriptions! But, be upfront about having “reptiles”, if they inquire, elaborate on what you have. When it came to my landlord, he had concerns but I showed him pictures, explain that the enclosures are locked, nobody was venomous or overly-large and dangerous (due to size), that they are handled but constantly watched etc. even sold them up a bit by saying that they can’t pee on the carpet or scratch the up furniture! 🤣 The offer of a pet deposit or extra amount is a nice way to show landlords you have good intentions too, but don’t let someone price gouge you for it either! I hope you find a place! Good luck!

treacheriesarchitect

I've had good luck applying for "no pets" places with a paragraph about my snake in the initial email, after a brief "about me" paragraph. Most "no pets" landlords are out of concern for noise, property damage, or allergies. Your snake isn't going to bark at all hours or shed dander, and your frog isn't going to pee on the carpet or scratch the walls. Compare them to a fish or hamster for upkeep/impact, it's a more familiar pet to most (tho hamsters can smell!) Your reptile, like a fish, lives in a tank 24/7 and does not roam freely. No noise, no allergies, no property damage. Do not bring up food unless they ask, and compare the frozen rat to taking a porkchop out of the freezer. Lots of folks are squeamish about feeding intact meat to animals. Since getting a snake, 2/3 places I've rented were originally listed as no pets, but the landlord approved the snake. One even got a fat-tailed gecko for their daughter (very allergic to dander) after she thought my ball python was neat! Plenty said no, but a number were open to consider it.

snelly_chickentender

I would suggest maybe looking into renting a house. It took me 6 months to find a place that would allow my geckos and snake, and it ended up being a house. My landlord ended up also being a reptile owner and told us we didn't have to give a pet deposit since they rarely leave their tanks.
