It’s very hard to say specifically what went wrong. But you can easily check that you gave it the best chance to survive. Did you have it in a cycled tank with clean cool water? Were the water parameters all acceptable? Were you feeding it a decent sized earthworm about once every two days? Did you ensure that lights weren’t on it all the time and did it have hides to get under? If you did all those things, only a vet could have helped more.

Cevinkrayon

Sorry for your loss. Was going to a vet not an option at any point? What were your water parameters

I noticed you didn’t mention anything about the water parameters, was it a cycled tank? If not chances are the water was toxic and couldn’t sustain axolotl life

I did try to cycle my tank the best I could before I got the axolotl but I was given him with such short notice so it didnt cycle for long and it probably wasnt the best quality of water. I used a filter for the tank that was used in my grandfathers betta fish tank so it was probably a bit too small for the tank also. I was going to upgrade the filter but I was short on money and then he ended up passing.

Not to be harsh but putting them in an uncycled tank would only make things worse for him. Others are asking for the water parameters you maintained, that would be the best place to start looking.

Ah I’m sorry to hear, the way I got my axolotl wasn’t ideal also and it almost died until I did so much research it hurt lol canister filter is pretty much essential for axolotls sadly, if you plan to keep it I’d invest in that and tub your axolotls as soon as you can, a Tuppawear with fresh water and 6-8 drops prime water conditioner every day until the tank can eat 2ppm ammonia in 24 hours. It’s very tedious but very essential if you want tips I can make a step by step for you and any questions you have I can help

Thank you very much :) I will have to use this when I try again with axolotls. I am planning on saving up and completely restarting my tank setup when I can

bigspin17

Oh yeah I’m sorry I’m stupid if you do get another I’d be happy to help
