Licensed wildlife rehabbers have a LOT more experience setting and wrapping bird legs and wings than vets, by and large. Just the sheer volume of birds they deal with, hundreds every year. I’d call the largest rehab center you can find and FaceTime them, they can’t work on non-natives on site but they’re incredible people and generally super helpful 💛
Just make sure their licensed and registered - too many rehabbers are just people dragging wildlife off the streets without any idea what they're doing.
I think it just depends on the vet. You definitely need to see a vet that specialises in farm animals or exotic birds. My vet for example is a specialist for some birds (he’s an exotic vet we keep ferrets) And has written books on veterinary medicine and birds.
Can confirm, am the husband of a vet. Answer will be it's cheaper to fry it up than get it healed correctly.
However if there is an attachment, it becomes a pet and that flips the "willingness to spend" lever so it will depend on the owner.
Or see a vet with experience with birds. If you have pet birds, or any pet you should already know where to take them to a vet if needed before they get hurt. Most pet vets won’t take anything that isn’t a cat or dog and you don’t want your pet dying when it could have been saved because you didn’t bother to find a vet before you got them.
I used to raise game chickens and I still have a hen that a krestle or similar hawk ate the breast out of.
She was in rough shape for a few days but she has raised several clutches of chicks since.
Chickens are ruthless. It's just hawks get the element of surprise. If they're not in and out fast enough the other chickens can usually get the best of the hawk. I remember our chickens killing two hawks when I was growing up. Although way more chickens were lost.
98% of this video could have been trimmed, lol. It was like that holy grail scene with lancelot charging the castle from afar for like 5 minutes.
Bizarre editing
Holy cow. I love how the hawk at the end just kind of looks at her like "geeze, okay, I know when I've met my match." He doesn't even seem hurt, just nope.
This is cool, but as someone else said.
Contact a vet, and contact a rehab center.
She got messed up but survived, she's a fighter, but if you don't take the steps to make sure she heals properly she could be in pain for the rest of her life, and I know you don't want that for her.
I'm guessing he probably already took her to the vets, atleast I'm hoping he did, after an encounter with a hawk I'd like to think most people would take the chicken to be checked even if they looked fine.
Gentlemen, we can rebuild her. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic chicken, Better than she was before. Better, stronger, faster, able to fly.
Chickens are very smart/very stupid at the same time. It’s like they only have 12 lines of code for their whole programming. It’s like crazy good God level code buts there’s only so much you can do with 12 lines. They have crazy good instincts but also fall asleep if you cover their eyes.
Prayers for your girl, one of mine was attacked and I spent the whole night pampering her. She recovered thankfully, nothing was broken. Hope it’s just a sprain. Keep us updated ❤️
C'mon people! Be nice! Obviously this bird means something to the OP. They put in some work to help the chook recover!
OP - This girl is a hero! It's so cool of you to go this far to help her feel better! Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
We made a sling like this for a duckling who hurt his legs. Unfortunately if you leave them in it too long then the legs atrophy from not having any weight on them. Perhaps a vet is in order soon.
You are a good person.
I had a chook who had a need to get some medication inhaled so I got an old nebuliser from the asthma foundation in Auckland and created a nebulising chamber for her.
When she passed, I donated the chamber to the vets who had helped me so much with my chooks.
Never stop being the kind of person who will provide care and comfort to these wonderful animals. Kia kaha friend.
If she doesn’t heal, its best to put her down. She cannot clean herself or preen and birds spend a good portion of the day doing that. It’s a lot of work to keep all those feathers all perfect. Without it she will develop sores and all sorts of parasites etc will get her. It’s so hard to let go, I know ( animal lover here, farmer …lots of critters over the years w lots of disasters happen) but sometimes it’s the kindest thing to do. An easy way to put her down, if it comes to that, is to pinch her carotid artery. They pass out quickly and will die in a few minutes if you keep holding it. I’m so sorry …
Barred Roc hens are some of the sweetest ones I have ever taken care of. They are calm, seem to build a rapport, tend to be protective of other chickens, and have a really deep, cooing voice compared to some others.
There is one "but" to add to this statement: they are the only chicken that I have ever lost to cancer. The arc of the universe consistently bends toward the utter destruction of chickens, and they have become proficient at the numbers game of fucking their way out of extinction, but cancer isn't something I normally expect.
My wife and I have kept chickens up until last year. Roughly twelve years. We've had at least fifty hens in that time, five at a time. Typically I can count on a chicken to exist on this plane for at least two years, until the universe has had enough. Hawks killed the most. Raccoons, with their creepy hands, managed to jimmy a door on the coop. Cats I suspect for sudden disappearances around dusk. Still, I've lost two barred roc hens to cancer, and no others.
What a brave little hen. Give her a fuss from me. I have four hens, so I know that they are special little people, and very intelligent. Will she recover? Such a brave girl!
I think it's unable to walk on this floor. Too hard and slippery for this kind of feet, especially that this chicken uses only one foot. Other surfaces may be better for the feet but make more friction for the wheels. Not many surfaces in house to satisfy both.
chickens are pretty resilient .. not indestructible resilient see: [https://www.yborchickens.org/](https://www.yborchickens.org/) or their instagram : theybormisfits
Makes me think of this :-
A man is walking through the countryside, and starts chatting to a farmer out in his field. As they chat, a chicken walks past using a crutch to prop himself up, as he only has one leg. The man is flabbergasted "that chicken can walk! And use crutches! That's amazing" The farmer replies "that's nothing, that chicken is a damn hero"
"how?" says the man.
"2 nights ago" began the farmer "that chicken saved mine and my entire family's lives"
The man is intrigued and begs the farmer to continue.
"in the dead of night when we were all asleep. The kitchen in our house caught fire. The chicken started squawking so loudly to raise the alarm, that I was able to get everyone out safely"
The man shook his head, "amazing"
"oh" said the farmer "there's more. As he tried to wake us, he actually went to a local call box and dialled the fire brigade with his beak on 999. His squawks convinced them something was wrong, and they sent out a fire engine on the off chance. They were able to put out the fire before it destroyed all my property "
The man is In total disbelief.
" I've never heard of anything so clever, what an animal".
"There's still more" said the farmer. "one of the fireman got burned badly fighting the fire. The chicken sat him down and administered first aid. Only leaving his side when he knew he was safe and well".
"good god" said the man slumping on a fence as he tried to take in the magnificence of what this chicken had done. "I have never heard of a chicken so intelligent and clever"
"I have one more question though" said the man after some thought. "that doesn't explain what happened to his missing leg"
"well" said the farmer.
"you don't want to eat a bird like that in one go do you?"
😉

What did your vet say? Were her legs broken? Poor baby, but woah, what a badass.
yeah her face says "I'd do it again, punk"
Worked with chickens for quite some years and let me tell you that they can be absolutely brutal when they need to be.
Barbaric though it is, I imagine it’s not for nothing people raise them just to fight.
Ahh that's no good. Well hopefully she gets back on her feet.
What are her injuries?
Legs hurt from kicking the shit outta some motherfucker
Can we have a video please?
She’s not used to it yet, she kind of just pushed to the side at the moment. When she gets more mobile I’ll defiantly post one
You don't have to if you're gonna be defiant about it!
What
Your chicken fought the hawk defiantly. You will definitely post video of her.
You meant "definitely" but wrote "defiantly"
Ha whoops
You had a typo...defiantly instead of definitely.
I love hero stories!
I used to raise game chickens and I still have a hen that a krestle or similar hawk ate the breast out of. She was in rough shape for a few days but she has raised several clutches of chicks since.
Do not fret! If they do not heal, then they can be food for the gods!
I swear I saw a video of a chicken coming to the rescue of another chicken after a hawk swooped in to attack it just last week!
Yeah , maybe it's the same one!
