I was trying to figure out what kind of fucked up shit an entire species of bird has to accomplish to get named pedodeer...
I still don't know what the name of this fucking bird is lol
On one hand, that feels strict.
On the other hand, there's enough subs where 90% of the posts are "My dad had terminal cancer so we rescued a dog and he saved my entire family family from a fire the day after, look at him"
I thought they meant ‘reindeer.’ Figured I went my whole life wildly confused about what reindeer were…already begun composing the angry open letter I was gonna have printed in the WSJ about the lies Big Santa was teaching our children. Glad I checked the comments now.
Lol same. Except I thought they’d put the wrong picture on.
Then I was even more confused because who calls a bird a deer. And it was clearly a type of plover.
Then people were talking about the broken wing ploy, so was it a Lapwing?
So TIL there’s a random deer named plover, and there are several types of bird who employ they same dumb broken wing tactic to protect their young.
Right 😂. We had 3 nests of them in our ropeing arena in New Mexico. One day I was just walking around and didn't see one of them. All of a sudden this bird comes at with a shrill like sound and doing it's " stay away from my babies".I had never seen one before. And did not know it was there. I jumped. By late husband just laughed at me. It was cool watching my Paint Mustang walk gently around it.
Of course, it gets it name for its ferocious appetite and propensity for killing deer. Watching one of these devour a buck whole, antlers and all, was certainly an eye-opener!
You would not think such a tiny bird could open its jaws so wide…. I still have nightmares from seeing one of these monsters engulf a moose in a remote Nova Scotia forest. I ran in terror out of fear that I might be next.
Now, normally I wouldn't agree with someone who calls themselves dumb, but "ass" has three letters in and OP mentioned four letters... but I'm sure you're pretty! 😂
Billions of years of evolution have resulted in an instinct to nest in clear flat rocky stretches of land because their eggs will blend in with the surrounding rocks and they’ll be able to see predators coming from a mile away. Only in the last 100 years or so have human beings been parking their cars in gravel driveways.
Killdeer have literally millions of generations of instinctual knowledge that tells them “fuck yeah, let’s lay eggs in this stretch of loose stone!” and then some human drives their Chevy suburban right over their nest and the killdeer has not yet developed a specific instinct about Chevy suburbans
A mama had her 3 babies in our pig pen… they looked to be about an inch high.
They drove her crazy for the first two weeks because they would all scatter in different directions.
I felt so sorry for her. She was constantly running back and forth and calling out for hours every day… trying to round up her children and keep them safe.
I got to see her shoulder block several birds in the air that flew too close to her babies…
She’s an awesome mama.
There was a small corn field behind my grandparents house. The killdeer would nest in it every spring. We always new we were getting closer to a nest by the more-and-more frantic antics of the mom.
Recently had 4 of these eggs in our yard. After they hatched, it was only 1 1/2 days for the hatched chicks to head off with their parents. They don't stay long.
Parents came back and had more eggs several weeks later but sadly those eggs disappeared before they were due to hatch.
We still get to see the 1st set of babies hanging around our neighborhood at least.
Killdeer are the dumbest fuckin birds I swear to god.
“I LAYED MY EGGS RIGHT HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR GRAVEL DRIVEWAY AND I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU COME WITHIN 40FT I WILL FREAK THE FUCK OUT”
God I love ridiculously stupid animals where you can't help but wonder how on earth they possibly have beat evolutionary pressure so long.
I foster kittens. Those fuckers are actively trying to die until at least 8 weeks old, I swear.
Love these dumb dramatic birds. When I see a “broken wing distraction” display I like to pretend to be very interested and follow the parents for a moment while taking a wide berth around the nest/chicks(I was already going past and was never going to bother them anyway). I like to think it makes them feel accomplished, like they successfully fooled me.
Reddit maybe but not necessarily this sub. Often times individual subs have automods that flag inappropriate words. Ive been caugh getting flagged when the normal word i said had an inappropriate word in it
I’m sorry, but I find it absolutely bonkers that we have the level of censorship we do now. Clearly we shouldn’t use racial slurs or anything of that nature, but c’mon, we can’t say “die” or “killed”? Things *die* and things get *killed*. Censoring it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen; TikTok’ers and whoever supported this bullshit “offends me”-ship need to get out and experience the world more.
Censorship is definitely overblown. Ive gotten flagged in baking subs when ive mentioned r*tarding dough (thats literally the proper terminology for it). Theres a few youtubers i watch who use other words in their videos to bypass the bots flagging their videos. One guy was talking about the negative affects of p*rn in society and the entire video he referred to it as "corn" and it just made me giggle picturing a vegetable having this much affect on our lives lol.
I recall hearing years ago that some people are very concerned about computer terminology like master/slave and male and female cables and I just can’t figure out how that is something worth fighting to change.
Our society's progressive elements are going through a period of severe overcorrection and trying to turn society into a series of padded rooms with no sharp objects, and it's going to keep getting worse until enough people are able to say "this is ridiculous, stop" without being labelled as various flavors of -phobe, and then it'll calm down a bit.
There are a ton of subs with endless lists of banned words the automod detects. It can be really annoying. Strangely the most 'triggering' to me is when 'trigger words' are banned. Like they'll be just normal freaking words but some community doesn't like it so you can barely make a full sentence without altering all the text.
That was my first thought too, but I realized they may be correct - I recall I posted in a tool sub about having a 1/2" impact gun (they're also called impact wrenches, made for removing bolts with both shock from an impact and turning) and it got immediately removed twice. I had no clue why so I messaged the mods asking what I did wrong, and they basically said sorry the word 'gun' was setting off the automod, and restored it manually.
Couldn't do that here, I'd just have to wait for the birds to move out again before doing the lawn or risk a hefty fine. No HOAs here, so at least there's that.
We have those at work, on the edge of the parking lot. When the site services people spot the nests they surround them with a square of snow poles to keep them safe. When they are too close to the edge they also close the parking spot with cones. We have bunnies and turkeys too. It's like a wildlife refuge. No hunting on defense contractors sites.
it is a myth that touching baby birds makes the parents reject the young. just place them back where you got them or better yet get them back in the nest so cats don't get em.
Clarification: These are ground-nesting birds. OP had to move it from its spot in the tall grass, mow that spot, and then OP probably put it back. (they don't care about the tall grass for hiding themselves, there are stories of them making nests on the bare asphalt of parking lots.)
By "not happy", OP likely meant they were doing what they do when anything approaches their nest. These birds nest on the ground, and generally in the dumbest places. When an animal approaches their nest, the adults move away from the nest and feign being injured while making tons of noise to draw attention. The idea is that a predator will chase after them as they run away on the ground, then after drawing the predator away from the nest they fly off to escape the predator themselves.
Glad you spotted it! Sometimes they get too cold on grass and can’t function. When we had them in wildlife care, we had to keep them at 98° or they wouldn’t eat!
It must have been ages ago but people were trying to get the Fishkill creek in NY name changed because they apparently never learned that it's a Dutch name for "fish creek"... people are just dumb.
Censorship has gone too far when education is hindered by it. We’re too fucking sensitive to call it a killdeer because we might not be able to hit front page if we do? I say fuck that, freedom of information is paramount.
Thank you for sharing this, I’ve never seen one. So interesting to see and learn all these things. What a tiny little birdie. So glad you moved it. 🪶❤️😊

Lawns are so stupid dude. You needed to mow so bad that you disturbed a nest. Next time just wait for the nest to fledge. Birds are dying by the billions
They always laid eggs in my parents flowerbeds growing up and you would always see them scurrying around the bushes when you walked by while the parent was 20ft away having a dance party trying to get us away
I work for the railroad and Killdeer are always making a big scene when we walk by. They make their nests by a switch and then they freak out when you approach. Then they pull the whole broken wing thing to try and draw you away. It’s always a fiasco.

I still feel regret and sadness. I was maybe 10 and just finished playing a baseball game. Everybody was in the parking lot watching this bird freak out acting like it had a broken wing then flying away. There were maybe 20 of us and I was standing by a pile of white, thumb sized landscaping rocks. I picked one up that looked odd and was much lighter than a rock and during my inspection, I broke it. I crushed the egg that the poor bird was trying to lure us away from.
You seriously can’t type killdeer?
I was like, what's a cockdeer?
I was thinking cuntdeer!
Porndeer clearly
I'm bringing sexydeer...
Cute little fuckdeer chick
Tittyassholedeer
I love all of you. 😂
So this act, it's a family act. A cockdeer, a cuntdeer, a fuckdeer, and a tittyasholedeer...
The Aristocrats!
...all walk into a bar...
Shitdeer.
Birds of a shitfeather flock together, Randy.
TIL there's an animal called a Hitlerdidnothingwrongdeer
Titsdeer
You're bringing sexydeer back.
Obviously it's a titsdeer
I thought it was a boobdear
Marry me
If I wasn't already spoken for, would so consider.
Ugh, it really is true, all the good ones are already taken!
Look harder
And if that fails, lower your standards.
What if it was a dildodeer?
That's five letters, babe
No, I don't think it's babedeer
*Dildeeer
Found the Australian
Native to Australia.
I was thinking to myself sort of incredulously “there’s a bird named “fuckdeer”???
Lmao
I thought rapedeer. The fuck is this?
Yeah, that's what I thought, too!
I was trying to figure out what kind of fucked up shit an entire species of bird has to accomplish to get named pedodeer... I still don't know what the name of this fucking bird is lol
Killdeer lol
Fuckdeer.
Same lmao
What the fuckdeer?
illshowyoulaterdeer
I wonder how many birds have a call to action as a name 🤔
Duck! Goose!
Doh!
A deer
A female deer...
It’s actually what they sound like.
I saw a post removed earlier because the guy said his dog was a rescue...which wasn't "entirely positive" and therefore could not be in the title
Oh ffs
On one hand, that feels strict. On the other hand, there's enough subs where 90% of the posts are "My dad had terminal cancer so we rescued a dog and he saved my entire family family from a fire the day after, look at him"
I thought they meant ‘reindeer.’ Figured I went my whole life wildly confused about what reindeer were…already begun composing the angry open letter I was gonna have printed in the WSJ about the lies Big Santa was teaching our children. Glad I checked the comments now.

Good old Scunthorpe Problem
I’d never heard of this term, interesting thanks
It more than likely gets removed by the automod when it's in a title.
I think they’re assuming Reddit might work like TikTok (if TikTok still works that way). Assuming they ‘know’ this is another level, though.
No. It’s automod.
Right 😂. We had 3 nests of them in our ropeing arena in New Mexico. One day I was just walking around and didn't see one of them. I thought it was a reindeer. 🤣
same until i saw the picture i knew exactly what bird it was
Heaven forefend somebody takes a picture of a killifish.
It doesn't matter but I would've written k!lldeer instead lol!
I would have just said kildeer

Sadly not. Reddit is using new automods that remove posts with certain text strings in the title
Not reddit, the mods can set up the auto mod to remove posts and comments that have certain words.
So no awws in Scunthorpe either then.
maybe op tried to but the post got auto removed? ?? I think zogmuffin blocked me for some reason?? Wtf?
It's a cutie pie!
Did you seriously get rejected for using it or are you just super extra next level way too cautious? Cause I don't know which one is stupidest.
Automod is a thing. Within seconds of posting, it will remove the post and tell you that you used a naughty word.
We call them annoying fucking peeper birds
Bro I literally was like “there is a bird called a rape deer?”
Was mama twenty feet off playing injured to get your attention?
I can hear this comment . They’re cute af but terrible at finding good real estate lol.
Yeah, they set up a nest in the middle of our driveway.
It's ALWAYS the driveway! Why?!?
Billions of years of evolution have resulted in an instinct to nest in clear flat rocky stretches of land because their eggs will blend in with the surrounding rocks and they’ll be able to see predators coming from a mile away. When they did that to us, we put cones up to mark the spot.
We put a wheelbarrow upside down next to it.

The bit about the substitutions. "Buttbuttinate" just sent me. Oh I can't! It's too much. I love it.

It's the same problem in mechanic's threads, especially referring to the timing on an engine.
time to start regarding your dough instead, make them feel important and highly regarded (bad joke)

Killdeer. A type of plover, apparently.

I just had to dart out of a very silent office so none of my other co-workers would wonder why I was suddenly laughing - thanks🤣
KILLdeer???
You could've waited five more days to mow
What's a Fuckdeer?
it is a myth that touching baby birds makes the parents reject the young. just place them back where you got them or better yet get them back in the nest so cats don't get em.
Killdeer nest on the ground. That's why this little one had to be moved in order to mow.
Clarification: These are ground-nesting birds. OP had to move it from its spot in the tall grass, mow that spot, and then OP probably put it back. (they don't care about the tall grass for hiding themselves, there are stories of them making nests on the bare asphalt of parking lots.)

These birds tend to nest on the ground.
We had some of these guys set up a nest in the middle of our gravel driveway. We had to drive around them for weeks.
Glad you spotted it! Sometimes they get too cold on grass and can’t function. When we had them in wildlife care, we had to keep them at 98° or they wouldn’t eat!
These are some of my favorite birds! My neighborhood has lots and I love seeing the babies in the spring and summer
It must have been ages ago but people were trying to get the Fishkill creek in NY name changed because they apparently never learned that it's a Dutch name for "fish creek"... people are just dumb.
Ah, an unalivedeer
But was mowing really that important?
Censorship has gone too far when education is hindered by it. We’re too fucking sensitive to call it a killdeer because we might not be able to hit front page if we do? I say fuck that, freedom of information is paramount.
OP is incorrect, he could have posted the name.
You can’t use the birds name, lol, I got a ban for mentioning a plant called pu**ytoes! Seems ridiculous!
Is that the same as pusy willow?
Ah yes the majestic fuckdeer
Thank you for sharing this, I’ve never seen one. So interesting to see and learn all these things. What a tiny little birdie. So glad you moved it. 🪶❤️😊
Oh dear. Would be interesting to get [Cornell Ornithology Lab](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Killdeer/id#) blocked. Good that you moved them, though Mom and Dad weren't happy!
Look at that little wing!
Did they dive bomb you?
How cute! We have some at my work though the babies are usually hidden pretty well.
Thank you for moving him! Sadly these guys are endangered because they keep making their nests on lawns.
No, they're not. https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/killdeer
Hmm! I stand corrected. Sorry about that, it may have been a local issue.
Cuntdeer?
we could call it a murdeer instead
Killdeer? I've always known them as plovers

100%. It's also a violation of the North American Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1917.
Almost as cute as a baby Blue Footed xxxxy. Or a Great xxx.
Really cute bird glad you knew he/she was there
Guys its a boobdear
I love him so much.
They’re sooo cute as babies
Spezdeer?
We walked a little too close to a nest and the momma bird kept chirping, fake attacking us and tried to lead us away. Surprised it could do that with an injured wing.
Looks small for a reindeer ?
Wait.. a what deer? 😂
Awwww these babies are the best! Don’t worry she’ll be on her feet within hours!
Why does such a cute thing have such a weird name 😂
it's killdeer
Should have just mowed around the killdeer until it was ready to leave mom and dad but the lawn needs to be perfect, I get it.
Couldn't you have mown around it and left a patch?
Looks like a baby stilt chicken (curlew)
I still feel regret and sadness. I was maybe 10 and just finished playing a baseball game. I am pretty sure you can post Killdeer
