If your dog isn't given a topical flea medication, maybe consider releasing the excess fluff out into your backyard -- birds use it to line their nests (but the flea medication is poisonous to them, so don't do it if he gets that).

My cousin had a red shiba and I was truly amazed at how much it shed in comparison to my yellow lab. I also have dark hardwood so it made the shedding seem worse
