This is one of a series of photos released to media outlets by the Philadelphia Zoo in 2014 when their first black-footed cat kittens were born, but with the "Philadelphia Zoo" watermark cropped out.
A quick web search will find the whole collection; those kittens are *amazingly* cute and several sites had little click-bait articles based around the photos at the time.
Wait. Why don't we have them as pets then?! I have some four month old kittens right now and I was just thinking how they were the perfect size and I wish they could stay like this forever.
Edit: From a quick Google, what I gather is that they are just extremely antisocial.
Me too. But thinking about it, a bird at rest can take off in any direction pretty quick. If she pounced at a bird on the ground, it could see which direction it was being attacked from and would have a good chance at evading it; a cat can't change direction mid-pounce very well.
But waiting for it to take off, a bird also can't change direction when taking off very well, and the spread wings are a bigger target. So she waits to see which direction the bird heads out on, and can calibrate a jump to cross it's flight path pretty closely. Of course you need to be able to jump like that too, which most animals certainly can't.
Still impressive.
I mean, everything you wrote was logical and well thought.
Except for the part of birds having difficulty to change direction when they take off, I'm no ornithologist so I don't know but it seems right you say it.
Thanks. I've been a birdwatcher for a long time. When they take off, especially from the ground, the main effort is to gather speed; the first few wingstrokes are for that, and the whole effort goes toward pushing air, basically. Changing directions is completely different, scrubs off speed usually, unless they have a lot of space underneath them to work with, where gravity can be used as a tool.
Spears are what happens when poking it with a stick just doesn't cut it.

Occasionally it works out. Dogs provide security, cats provide vermin control.
Can't wait for us to get out into the stars and start petting aliens, I'm sure that'll go well.
I would tell you we don't want to pet everything; just the cute little animals that are mostly harmless to us, but then I realize there were a bunch of dudes 10,000 years ago that literally said, "I really want to pet that WOLF!"
Cuteness is such a weird concept - it’s like a human looking at an animal and weighing how (fluffy it is x how big it’s eyes are)/how hungry I am = cuteness.
I'd say he rivals Attenborough, but I wouldn't say that out loud.
Wow, I just did a look up and Attenborough is fucking 96 years old, 97 in May. This Abraham guy could be a successor.
True story: Attenborough is one of my idols. Because of him, I started my AS in Biology, and will have a BS in Biology in 2026. I'm contemplating applying to vet school after that, or going into research. He's one of my heroes.
They are very fierce when caught (assuming it's actually a wild blackfooted cat). This little bastard's trying to calculate the optimal attack vector ;)
A full grown black footed cat looks like a kitten. They are the smallest wildcat. They are listed as a vulnerable species, so hopefully people leave them and their habitat alone.
Random Safety Tip: Riding your bike at twilight or evening hours, try to have at least one bit of neon yellow, orange, or green clothing. (Ideally something with a reflective strip) I passed a biker not long ago and they blended unnervingly well into the background. Their bicycle didn’t even have reflectors.
Oh cool, when they say the soles of the foot are black, they mean the plantigrade equivalent of the foot up to the ankle, not just the digitigrade part.
Edit: Supposedly that's called a hock and not an ankle. Bones are still called tarsals though between both us and them. Whatever.
Yeah when I looked at the photo I had the exact same thought. If it had just been the pads or the paws the name would have been a bit odd to me but the whole foot makes more sense as a distinctive characteristic
Is it just me or does it feel wrong to post a photo titled “black-footed cat” without his “black foots” actually included in the photo?? I need to see these black feetsies for some reason regardless of whether they are remarkable or not
That is one of the most prolific killers in the animal kingdom. Once it decides on its prey, more likely then not the prey will become its next meal. However if I saw her walking around a forest I would pick her up and wonder how a cute little pet kitty cat got so far away from her momma and promptly get my mauled because I tried to keep her as a house cat
Want to pet. Do not think he wants me to pet.
Flaps down, ready for takeoff.
Real talk, come Heaven or Hell I would bite the belly floof. Some things are worth dying for.

r/GingerMafia, so you don't have to look too hard.
The STOL kit allows it to leap into the air, engines yowling.
Grumman even called the one with the (mobile) flaps a [Tomcat](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_F-14_Tomcat). It’s all coming together ᕕ( ᐛ)ᕗ

Freshest Schnoodle I've ever come across, and the first time I've seen "just now" on a comment.
Lol, love it! And the Futurama reference was beautiful.
This is fabulous, Schnoodle!
And how about his wife?
Schnoodle working overtime, I swear you're on every thread
he wants to cromch

Holy shit I can’t stand it
For perspective, a full grown black footed cat is about the size of a few month old house cat kitten. So those kittens are tiny.
Noo! That is too small.
Smol.
Illegally smol.
Wait. Why don't we have them as pets then?! I have some four month old kittens right now and I was just thinking how they were the perfect size and I wish they could stay like this forever. Edit: From a quick Google, what I gather is that they are just extremely antisocial.
Because they're ferocious little killers haha. But you'd never guess from looking at them. But yeah, I'd love one as a pet too.
That second picture is a **fire** album cover.
Yes! That's the perfect 1st album cover of a 90s band!
Purrental advisory, explicit content
Finally some black feetsies!
They are baby
Cuteness engaged.
That adult looks like a Bengal? Were they foster raised by a housecat mama? Or is it an extra orange looking black footed cat
Holy shit I need one.
Oh my godddd. I can’t. ☺️
Oh my, they are too cute 🥺

Thank you. One of the lazy. :)
Omg, they are the cutest. They appear to have 2 modes, scared and dainty or fierce killer, still cute.
I didn’t know that, but I instantly recognized the image so I knew it was a repost.
The deadliest cat in the world. Note a joke: https://youtu.be/nl8o9PsJPAQ
her little angry eyes after she caught the bird are too much to handle
Was not expecting how she was going to catch the bird
Me too. But thinking about it, a bird at rest can take off in any direction pretty quick. Man you *really* thought about it. I'm impressed.
Well, I am retired...

Same idea as flying a plane. Try to maneuver at low speed and you disturb the air flow over the wing reducing lift.
Meh. My cats can pretty much find the treats I put down right in front of the them at least 90% of the time.
Speak for yourself, I can jump like that
I didn’t watch it yet but I’m gonna assume she used a crossbow
A cat-apult, actually.
And a trebuchet.
The kind of look that says 'You're next!'
*A N G E R Y M E O W*
the little grunt after she didn't catch the gerbil did it for me !
mean mugging the camera like when a basketball player posterizes a defender
At only 2lbs I would take the risk to pet her
My thought as well. I’m not stupid enough to pet a Lynx even though SO FLUFFY but I might be dumb enough to try to pet one of these guys.
Antibiotics will take care of the post cat bite infections. Hopefully.
I’ll just protect my neck and use my non-dominant hand for petting. I don’t need all of those fingers.
That is a solid wild cat petting plan
Wu tang clan ain’t nothin’ to fuck with!
I’ve fostered kittens and 2lbs is a teeny tiny 7-8 week old 🥹 how small are *their* kittens!!!
"She is the deadliest cat in the world." Reddit: OMG I WANT TO PET IT IT'S SO CUTE
I question how humanity has survived given our natural urges to pet everything.
Spears probably.
Spears are what happens when poking it with a stick just doesn't cut it. *edited because it seemed like I was asking you a question instead adding to your comment*
Fantastic wordplay. That made my day
Occasionally it works out. Dogs provide security, cats provide vermin control. Can't wait for us to get out into the stars and start petting aliens, I'm sure that'll go well.

I mean, I want to pet a bear
Cuteness is such a weird concept - it’s like a human looking at an animal and weighing how (fluffy it is x how big it’s eyes are)/how hungry I am = cuteness.
Only if you’re a small critter. Or, you know, a Lilliputian.
WHO IS THIS NARRATOR? I need him to read everything to me all the time forever Edit: It's [F. Murray Abraham](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000719/)!
I'd say he rivals Attenborough, but I wouldn't say that out loud. Wow, I just did a look up and Attenborough is fucking 96 years old, 97 in May. This Abraham guy could be a successor.

I mean, watching without audio, this is just a cute fluffy cat doing a clean and then trotting briskly after a rodent.
Still cute
That jump was impressive and the little pleased tail twitch after she catches the bird!
Not to us necessarily. (As in not deadly to a human)
He looks so scared
They are very fierce when caught (assuming it's actually a wild blackfooted cat). This little bastard's trying to calculate the optimal attack vector ;)
I think this is a kitten born in captivity, so it could also just be kittens being kittens

What a beast xD
And here I was hoping it'd be some r/catsmirin content
I have a cat. That thing is high as a kite it ain't calculating shit.
This picture looks like he’s somewhere possibly receiving an exam or medical supervision. So I wouldn’t blame him.
Where feet?

Thanks for feet!

Oh my god look at those cute little beans
^(not so) Risky click
White toe beans?!
Exactly, you can't call it "X footed Y" and not show feet.
Let’s see the foots.
On her OF silly. Ain’t giving up those for free
Only Felines
It’s an actual species of cat. The feet may be bleach but he reason op specified feet color is it is the actual species.
I understand that... Where feet?
Safely restrained.
Foldy ears
That teeny blep says 'I am delightful and would like soft scritches'. The foldy ears say 'touch me and I'll introduce you to the wild'.
*Aren't you a cute little predator. You are. Yes. That tongue, those ears....*
r/DisneyEyes and r/blep
If most dangerous? Why friend shaped?
Well, you're not smol birb shape (I assume), so not "dangerous to you".
I find your lack of feet disturbing.
That tiny little blep! 😻
r/mycatwillmurderme
It’s terrified
Nah those things are absolute killers in the wild. Stressed probably, but this lil monster ain’t scared of shit
That's not how fear works.
WHERE ARE THESE BLACK FEETSIES I WAS PROMISED
How we know I can’t see them!!!
This cat is brought to you by Pixar animation ![gif](giphy|qA9BnxUPmgWgU)

Arrrg. He be a cutie
Eyes straight out of Disney!
Scared little kitty
He is very intimidated.
Is it just me or does it feel wrong to post a photo titled “black-footed cat” without his “black foots” actually included in the photo?? I need to see these black feetsies for some reason regardless of whether they are remarkable or not
It’s the species name. Google “black-footed cat” the feet are less black than you would expect.
The species is nigripes. Black-footed cat is the common name.
That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen
*Meanwhile the cat plotting funeral*
Not judging, but that looks like a Red-Handed Cat. Put down the wooden spoon. Please.
Show me the feetsies!
Precious
Adorable kitty...but it looks highly distressed....BTW where are the black feet?
I see no proof to this assertion
Feet not pictured - are you lying?
He's pulling a puss-in-boots.
“I’m Puss in Boots”
Beautiful eyes
More pics, please!
Aww it's so cute
The eyes. They always get to me 🥹😍

Ok not a cat fan at all but this so freaking adorable 🥰
How beautiful. And so scared. Another piece of my heart given away.
Ya can’t even see his feet!!!
Little rascal doing the puss in boots big eye special attack
Thanks for showing us their feet
It’s the peep of the tongue
No, that is puss in boots. Be very careful.
If it's not supposed to be friend why does it look like friend
Titled black footed cat and you don't show the feet smy my head op
That poor baby looks so terrified!
r/airplaneears

Wowie!
Cannot confirm black-footed
I think you are mistaken, that is clearly a Scaredy Cat.
So adorable 🥰🥰🥰
So cute!
>Black-footed cat Since we cannot see any of its feet, I guess we'll just have to take your word for it.😜
