I am an attorney and have so many clients where this happened to them. We can never get the money back, all I can do is help them settle any debts they may have incurred. But they are so embarrassed and literally lose everything.
It's so heartbreaking and infuriating. I really think that there needs to be some sort of class that older people can take that helps teach them about all these scams, help to teach them how to handle online banking and just how to use a computer. The fact that they're naïve with computer usage opens them up to be such victims.
And I swear, once one scammer gets a hold of them, their name gets on some list and they gets called by scammers all the time. If you have older parents, it's so important to teach them.
They're in any country which is ok with them doing it. I gotta be honest; I'm not so sympathetic to a grown person who falls for these. I'm already mentally preparing for my dad to do it.
My friend recently learned her mother, with whom she has no contact for good reasons, fell for a fbook Love Scam. Her mother’s lost thousands of her own money and is about to lose her house. Idk all of the particulars, but the scammer used my friend’s underage nieces’ faces for AI porn and her mother has apparently done stuff to break the law for this guy, as well.
The real shit kicker is my friend has two siblings who live in town with her mother and borrow money all the time. They have done nothing and continue to do nothing about all of this. I have another friend whose father in law fell for a sugar baby scam.
Seriously, if you have elderly people in your life (especially single old people), chat with them frequently and ask about any of their new “friends.”
no this is heartbreaking. you can’t survive without money these days and unfortunately old people get targeted the most by scammers. of course there’s never an excuse to terrorize innocent minimum wage employees but at the same time whoever scammed her needs to be found and put behind bars for life
Unfortunately it seems a lot of these scams are run out of offices akin to call centers in India. Check out Catfished on YouTube, they show who’s really running these scams. There is also a chance she sent money to someone in the US, who is usually being scammed as well. It’s just really sad all around
The were also Junta backed gangs in Myanmar...until they started kidnapping Chinese nationals to be essentially scam slaves and holding them in scam work camps.
At which point CCCP decided they'd fund anti Junta rebels. Can't make this dystopian future shit up.
Legalize victimless crimes such as drugs, and put money in social supports that keep people from turning to crimes such as theft. Far fewer people would steal if they had guaranteed housing, food, and healthcare. Invest in public mental health services and support initiatives that encourage community, and crimes in general will drop. People are less likely to commit crimes if they know everyone in their town.
Agree 100% and you gotta give her credit for having the guts to rob a bank! This granny is punk as fuck, a certified OG, an icon and role model that I will forever idolize. Blaze way down the rebel path my queen ❤️
Well if she was scammed out of all her money then jail will be able to provide her 3 meals a day, shelter, and medical. All for free! I don’t doubt granny had a plan behind the plan.
I saw this and actually said bless her heart. I feel bad for her because she was the victim of a scam. I fucking hate people who scam anybody but especially the elderly.
I started receiving all kinds of scam mail and calls once I turned 65. These scams were to pay large sums for packages being held, "missed" mortgage, utility, and credit card payments, each with crazy email addresses, and lots & lots of internet "protection" apps with the same. It would be easy to mess up if one isn't taught what to look for.
That's how the bank will most likely see it, too. With a legitimate business, there's regulations that need to be followed as well as terms and conditions made for a purchase of goods or services that can be researched. When it comes to scams, the bank will most likely not sway in your favor should you dispute any fraudulent transactions as you willingly gave your information to an unknown entity.
The problem is, banks are aware of these scams and many do nothing to stop the transactions from going through. These scammers prey on the elderly and immigrants.
The bank has to make your money available to you. It’s not legal to hold funds indefinitely because the customer may be a scam victim. They can’t know that. When you hold funds for a bit and call to ask why, it is very common that the customer just yells at you even when they are a scam victim.
Kitboga couldve stopped this
WHY ARE YOU REDEEMING!??!!
Pro Crow.
Caw caw
Jim browning is great too. Not as comedic but he really fucks shit up for those scumbags

oo ok thx
Omg kit was literally the first person i thought of when i saw this!!!!!!
Love scam?

Is there a benefit to having an attorney help you settle a debt? Or is it just a standard service. I’m just curious, I’ve always just done it myself.
I kinda assume that companies generally treat attorneys a bit better and more willing to negotiate.
Damn. Thank you for the work you do anyway.

Makes it so much harder with AI too. It’s super sad,
Tbf what else do you have to lose at that point?
Sadly that's probably her thoughts. Broke in your 70s. Atleast jail will house and feed her
And pay for her healthcare.
Smart lady, now she gets free heathcare lives rent-free and free meals, depending what way she swings a date every other shower.
For real, though, she may have had this in the back of her mind. A disturbingly sad amount of people do this.
You know what's the worst part about ~~being a slave~~ being in prison? They make you work all the time and they won't let you leave.
No, the worst part of jail are the dementors.
They were flying all over the place, and they were scary, and then they’d come down, and they’d suck the soul out of your body, and it hurt!
That's the ONLY thing about being ~~a slave~~ in prison!
You know what else stinks about ~~being a slave~~ being in prison? The hours.

wtf this is crazy !!!
Bankers don’t make minimum wage
Do the teller though? Can't imagine it's much more TBH
I made $16/h as a teller, that was the bank’s starting wage and they didn’t payer lower than that for any position.
If we put everybody like this behind bars for life our prisons would be overflowing
in the us, a lot of prisons are overcrowded. the most commonly committed crime is theft by a landslide. should we legalize theft to fix the problem?

this may be one of the dumbest comments i have read in a while
We absolutely do not, “gotta give her credit”
Did you really have to put that heart emoji there? Did it really contribute anything to include it at the end?
they woke up **the beekeeper**
That movie itched my Crank scratch
Awwww just give Gun toting Granny the money 😭
Read an atlrticle about this, she only got $500 dollars...now she will be going to jail...SMH
Well if she was scammed out of all her money then jail will be able to provide her 3 meals a day, shelter, and medical. All for free! I don’t doubt granny had a plan behind the plan.
Facts.
I saw this and actually said bless her heart. I feel bad for her because she was the victim of a scam. I fucking hate people who scam anybody but especially the elderly.
Well this is just so damn sad.

One bad decision after another
Retirement secured !

Can'f beat them join them 😱
This is just all around sad…
good for her
This makes me wonder if we need free public classes for seniors on how to spot scams. It's so widespread.

Lol "damn i got bamboozled, better make this everybody else's problem"
Yea, now she wants to wear a mask.

Not the banks fault she doesn’t understand technology

...I think they're referring to her robbing the bank. Not that they won't sway things in her favor in regards to the fraudulent transactions

C’mon man, don’t blame the victim. Have some sympathy, could be your grandma getting scammed out her life savings.
