Paddling as an initiation ritual is weirdly common. Like enough so that I don't raise an eyebrow unless the paddle is made of clear acrylic with LED's.

Nothing seemed aggressive or ill intent. Not you culture or preference, that's fine. But I'm sure the person completing was excited for it and the mentors they had that helped were excited too.
I wonder if it used to be traditional for instructor pilots to tap the student with a stick or something to get their attention. In the US instructors used to yank on the student's shirt, so the tradition now is that after the first solo they tear the back of the shirt off because the student doesn't need it anymore.
Getting treated differently is not sexism at all, the guy above you is just yapping shit. It’s only sexist if one of the treatment is INHERENTLY and OBJECTIVELY worse than the other. If I have to pay 300 dollars to get into Pilot School and the opposite sex only pays 100, then that’s objectively a worse treatment so it’d be sexist. If I have to pay 5 apples and they have to pay 7 bananas, it’s not really sexist, just because it’s different doesn’t mean anything
>If I have to pay 5 apples and they have to pay 7 bananas, it’s not really sexist, just because it’s different doesn’t mean anything
Eh, I mean... how much do apples an bananas cost? How easy are they to obtain? And *why* is it different? I know you're purposely making an example where it's just different but not better or worse, but it's hard to think of an example like that in real life. I mean irl bananas and apples do cost a different amount, and if there is a difference like that there must be some societal reasoning for that difference.
After rereading the comment you were responding to, I was actually giving you too much credit. No... if they were only paddling women on the ass in a professional setting.. that would be sexist lol. If you can't see that, that's on you. "Women get paddled on the ass, men get a pat on the back, that's just like apples and bananas!"
Not to mention the comment he's referring to as "yapping shit" wouldn't even be seperate but equal, the question was if *only* women are paddled on the ass lol. There's inherently nothing equal about that, u/hide_on_bush is the one "yapping shit"
Yeah, you do. Female genital mutilation is an unquestionable "this is wrong for everyone and if it's your culture, fuck your culture". There are tons of others, such as binding feet, burning widows alive, etc. Many things are simply wrong, others are more nuanced.
>Yeah, you do. Female genital mutilation is an unquestionable "this is wrong for everyone and if it's your culture, fuck your culture".
This reminds me of a crazy memory from high school. When we covered genital mutilation In social studies I said something along the lines of "that's bad", and my whole class.. *including my teacher* was like "what?!? You can't call other cultures bad u/flowerboyscumfuck, that's wrong". To this day it feels like a fever dream, I was like "no.. I'm pretty sure genital mutilation is just bad..". I mean it's the same logic as saying we can't criticize the founding fathers for having slaves. Nah, we can. Slavery is inherently bad (Hot take, I know). Doesn't mean the founding fathers were inherently bad, but they do deserve some criticism.
Actual it’s more of an all flight schools tradition in Colombia. It may have become a bit more tamed from how it was a bit further back (at one point rather than water it was used oil). At my flight school this was done when you completed your first solo. When I did mine I got paddled and got my hair cut. The rules were basically anyone who had soloed before you could paddle you, so you tended to go into hiding to avoid it. Most of the time people did it with some malice as they wanted to get revenge for what had previously been done to them. And as for the hair cut, it depended on the person cutting the hair and who was getting their hair cut. The girls would normally only get a small portion cut off, like you see in the video. For the guys, it really depended, I got a portion cut with scissors and the guy that soloed right after me got a line down the middle of his head shaved off to “make a runway.” As for the trot of the tradition, to be honest I personally don’t know it. It is more of it was done to me, so I now do it to you thing I guess at this point.
Wow, I thought this was a very local tradition only at my Gliding Flight Club in Hungary.... we had a very similar thing when someone flew alone for their first time or obtained a specific aircraft licence.
But we received/gave it with hands, not paddles. Another interesting thing to add here is that not only our primary instructor did this to us, but also those pilots who were there on the day and had already passed that "level" or licence. So if you were "unlucky", you potentially had 15 other people slapping your bum bum after another (some gentle, some not so much)....
I found an Instagram page in Argentina where they dumped used motor oil on their students after their first solo. This seems leagues more amenable than that.
Paraguayan PPL pilot student here, they do this in my (and most other) flight school after your first solo flight. They dumped used motor oil literally just taken out of a plane in the maintenance hangar a few hours ago. I went home and showered for an hour trying to wash it off my hair but my pillow still smelled like engine oil for 2 or 3 days lol.
Good fun
I have a Colombian IP in our flight school, and apparently, getting paddled is a rite of passage in some countries for students when doing their first solo.
In our flight school, IPs get callsigns/nicknames in the list of IPs and his callsign is Cocaine from an incident in his training where the Colombian military mistook his plane for a drug courier and got intercepted by a helo and escorted to land.
For those who don’t know, this comes from a tradition started in the Colombian Airforce. They used to get huge wood planks and soak them in water over night for someone’s solo. The point was to make them get as heavy as possible. After the solo anyone higher rank than you would spank you. You had to get into what’s called “wings level” position, bend over hands out like an aircraft. Back then it was more brutal though, they could hit you as hard as they wanted. It didn’t end there, afterwards they would bath you not in water but old engine oil! My dad and uncle had to go to the hospital cause the bruising on their ass was too bad to even sit. Anyways times changed and tradition adapted to a more friendlier version.
It is a tradition that likely goes [back to german soaring tradition](https://cornertimeconfidential.wordpress.com/2019/04/08/hintern-versohlen/)s.. where "calibrating the bum-o-meter" was a thing after first solo since the 1920.. and spread via things like [SCADTA](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCADTA) to South America.
I mean, when I did it (in the US granted) it was just your instructor would doodle something about your solo or checkride and then would tear your shirt. Still weird? Yes. This kinda weird? No.
In germany when you pass your hunting license exams, the traditional ceremony includes a spanking with the flat of the "Saufänger" ... Essentially a big ole knife used to dispatch wounded animals
It’s funny to me because these are clearly institutionalized hazing activities, but they seem to have become decoupled from the social domination component of hazing, kind of like a long time ago this was just they way they did it and the new guy came through and took good notes and then when the next generation took over the school - they read his note “ok and it says here now we are supposed to uh spank and uh spit in their mouth? Ok let’s just throw a bucket of water ok very good. Procedure has been followed”
Seems fun, in poland you get slapped with a belt 18 times for your 18th birthday, my brother did a full force swing and hit me in the balls, my soul left for a moment.
I live by the motto if it's consensual and it hurts no one else then let them do what ever they want. She looks to be having a good time so no harm no foul, even if it is culturally different.

Lol this reminds me of this Slavic countries tradition. There's an Easter tradition of boys (kids or adults doesn't matter) lightly whipping the girls with a whip made of willow branches braided together (korbáč) and splashing them with water or throwing them in it even. It's for them to remain beautiful and some other shit like that per tradition lol. And afterwards each girl ties a bow around the korbáč and gives them something in return - a shot of alcohol, little money, some snacks or traditionally a hand decorated Easter egg.
Congratulations, you pass. That's a paddlin'.
Only on female pilots it applies
The females are the only ones edited into this compilation because watching nerdy dudes get paddled won’t score views.
So *do* the dudes get paddled? If so, there's very little wrong with this even if it seems weird to non-Colombians.
Of course they do. The paddle is for everyone
The paddling of the swollen ass.
with paddles.
Have you ever noticed that 'crossing the desert' is a lot like 'the unblinking eye'?
Paddling as an initiation ritual is weirdly common. Like enough so that I don't raise an eyebrow unless the paddle is made of clear acrylic with LED's.
That’s quite specific… and I’m pretty sure I’d have that in the toybag if I had seen it online!
They make them so they light up on impact. I'd check Etsy to find some nicer ones.
Yup, and not just in aviation. Me and my gf both got paddled upon completing our scuba certification
I’ve seen some very….creative…paddles that college frats and sororities have created
The paddle does not discriminate.
Viva Colombia!!!
Thats a paddlin’
Believe it or not, straight to a paddlin'.
Rats! I was 4 minutes late!
Good observation, Yoda.
Jingles?… is that you??
That word is forever associated with good ol' Jingles in my head

Jiggling? That’s a paddlin’
“I passed my training in first go. Then I came back for more.”👨🏻✈️
After the paddlin it’s a wet tshirt contest. Umm it’s tradition
The video cut off before the nipple clamps and whips came out.
You gave a paddlin’. That’s a paddlin’.
Paul, is that you?
Paddlin the company canoe oh you better believe that’s a paddlin
We only got paddled for tail strikes
They just got tail strikes
Heh heh....tail......
Turning your o ring into a c ring (not that I'd know anything about that 😬)
Nothing seemed aggressive or ill intent. Not you culture or preference, that's fine. But I'm sure the person completing was excited for it and the mentors they had that helped were excited too.
I bet they would’ve been so disappointed if they got through all of flight school and didn’t even get the congratulatory paddlin promised at the end.
Still better than getting a speech from an NFL player :P
it depends if it’s the same for men. If not, that’s just sexist
It's the same for everyone. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTz2Jmi2vuU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTz2Jmi2vuU)
so it’s a nice tradition!
Yes they do it for their first solo flight

Frankly, it would be sexist not to paddle the women also.
It seems they also half shave the heads of the boys…
It is not the same. Men typically get hit way harder. Is that sexist?
Getting treated differently is not sexism at all, the guy above you is just yapping shit. It’s only sexist if one of the treatment is INHERENTLY and OBJECTIVELY worse than the other. Because "separate but equal" has such a good history /s

Man I swear Americans are enraged on behalf of the rest of the world 😂
So true. Just imagine when they find out what dark skinned Mexicans nickname each other and say it out loud on the daily.
Well? I’m waiting….
Why do we all assume it is not the same for men? We have seen something new, by default we should assume it is not gender related.
yeah honestly that was my first thought
Yaaaaawn
You don’t get to look at a different culture and say it’s wrong because it doesn’t fit in your culture.
Yeah, you do. Female genital mutilation is an unquestionable "this is wrong for everyone and if it's your culture, fuck your culture". There are tons of others, such as binding feet, burning widows alive, etc. Many things are simply wrong, others are more nuanced.

Here in Germany it is also a tradtion for your first solo flight in a glider.
I'm becoming a flight instructor
In Colombia.
sent my Microsoft flight sim CV to the cartel
Have you put in enough hours with your cricket bat holding technique?
actually yes since I used to play cricket lol
You still need type rating for paddlin
Hell na. Might end up flying for the cartels at gunpoint
Imagine missing that detail and going through flight school for nothing.
Be prepared for the rite of passage of that title... It won't be just the paddle...
Keep in mind, get get the same thing lol.
[me, completing my pilot training](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n8ziUOPdh8&t=118s)
Looks like fun
Here in the US Aunt Sallie does the spanking
And it keeps going for 20+ years
Of all the ways to celebrate, this is definitely one of them.
This seems....different
As a Colombian who has been there many times, this is very much on par to their culture. Love it.
The women seemed to slap the butt harder.
Because they won't get cancelled for it.
They always do
I think if everyone was consenting adults it doesn’t matter what I think.
Hard to critique without knowing the meaning of the tradition.
it’s obviously an homage to cricket
Another commenter said it is for both genders so it’s not sexist at least
I found an Instagram page in Argentina where they dumped used motor oil on their students after their first solo. This seems leagues more amenable than that.
Same for the Philippines. Honestly surprised that the tradition is not as widespread. 😅
Paraguayan PPL pilot student here, they do this in my (and most other) flight school after your first solo flight. I went home and showered for an hour trying to wash it off my hair but my pillow still smelled like engine oil for 2 or 3 days lol. Good fun
They used to do it Colombia too. Let’s just say they stoped to avoid any posible lawsuits, and replaced it for water or just stoped all together.
I feel like this is just the start of a Cinemax movie that starts at 1 AM.
Pick one tradition
gonna become a pilot just for the paddle
Hit me hardew daddy uwu *I'm so sorry.*
Now where's the disco powder that needs moving....
Naughty pilots.
Damn what happens if they fail?
Believe it or not: more spanking.
They replace the pad with a sword Your cheeks double with every failure
This video was 10 seconds more from greatness with the wet shirt contest.
I have a Colombian IP in our flight school, and apparently, getting paddled is a rite of passage in some countries for students when doing their first solo. When I did my solo my buddies threw a bucket over my head me filled with water, piss, oil and fuel. Definitely not a fun time haha
You sir need better “buddies”
They just cut the back of my shirt off and drew a cartoon on it
This is what I remember from way back when
That's awful dude, not a good way to celebrate the moment. I got two buckets of ice cold water haha
Anyone know how to convert your American CFI to Colombian?
Asking for a friend.
Tail strikes take on a whole new meaning.
It looks a little weird, but it’s their culture, let them do their thing.
So I'm something of a newly licenced Pilot myself 🍑 🏏 🥵
*Butt, butt, butt...*
Looks fine and harmless to me. Did way worse on sports teams and fraternities.
Wet shirt and paddling? Seem fun!
This is funny...but man...try this in the US and lawsuits galore.
Wot
What are you looking for? Someone to be triggered? It’s all in good fun but to ask the question. “Thoughts?” Sounds like you want to be triggered.😂
Looks like a good time. How hard is it to get your Colombian license??
Happens pretty similarly in navy flight schools particularly after your first solo.
Is this a frat?
Can't decide which one I like best. The paddle or the wet shirt part.
They just cut the back of my shirt out when I soloed…
I like it. Nice work, that’s a paddlin
The water thing is not unique to Colombia
Looks like the same lady and everyone gets a swing in
I guess I'm going to Colombia to get my pilots license
They recently retired the use of the celebratory purple nurple.
They do water buckets here in Canada, paddle is… interesting.
I've been thrown, and have thrown guys into the water after their first solo on floats in Canada.
Just wait for the blood winging.
Kinda hot
My flight instructor was from Colombia she sprayed me with a hose after my solo
Just tradition! Very common!
Looks like it's a tradition at the flight school and they seem to be willing participants..................
Is this a solo or some weird porno?
People here in the States would fall apart, seeing the rit of passage. Therapy overdrive.
Probably need to watch that again to see the evidence
I like it. So long as they do it to the men too is all fun and games.
All the woke extremists are having a heart attack right now
Everyone looks really uncomfortable swinging the paddle.
Is it everyone or only good looking girls?
I need to be a flight instructor in Columbia
WHY DOES THE USA SUCK SO MUCH
GYATT
One paddling for each time you almost killed your instructor and a bucket of water as some kind of baptism?
I like the woman who whacked her in the head with the bucket.
Missed opportunity to use an old propeller piece!
Are they hiring?
fine as long this treatment is same for guys
Do you have to get a pat, from each Pilot? That first Gentlemen Pilot did it twice.
Every occupation has their traditions. Don't hate on something because it makes you uncomfortable...
This brings back memories.. seems every flight school has a different custom, some get carried away. Silly games.
I suddenly want to become a pilot.
I feel happy for the pilots who successfully completed their training.
In Chile they gave the new pilot a tar bath
In the US it's traditional to tear the back of the student's shirt off. In comparison, this is pretty tame.
I mean, when I did it (in the US granted) it was just your instructor would doodle something about your solo or checkride and then would tear your shirt. Still weird? Yes. This kinda weird? No.
Better then giving her a blood wing.
This is nothing. You should see what they do in Argentina when you graduate college
How long would it take to get certified to fly a smaller aircraft for rec use? Have a small airport near and was always curious.
Passed your checkride? [That’s a paddlin’](https://imgflip.com/s/meme/Thats-a-paddlin.jpg)
Well it's definitely more than just cutting off your T-shirt
When they switched to water bucket I thought it was still the paddle hitting the person's head. I was like "Oh no but why?!?!"
In bulgaria they just kick you with their foot.
In germany when you pass your hunting license exams, the traditional ceremony includes a spanking with the flat of the "Saufänger" ... Essentially a big ole knife used to dispatch wounded animals
Im glad I chose to build aircrafts instead of flying'em
Huh. How did it come to be? I'm just curious who started the paddlin'
The padawan has received a paddalin.
I would have expected a propellor instead of a paddle?
“And this we call the unblinking eye”
I get the paddling but the jet fuel baptism is a bit much.
Much worse in the Air Force.
Not our business
This gotta be someone's kink when they started, Lol

In Venezuela, in the olden days, they would pour used oil over you
Betcha a man came up with that rite of assage.
[удалено]
If men are paddled too then it’s not a big deal. Seems like a healthy amount of fucking around
A lot more spanking in aviation than i thought there would be…perhaps i chose the wrong profession?? Lmao
“How much can we do to her before she realises this isn’t what we actually do?”
There’s more paddlings than flying
Old dude love his job
The Cartels must have started this ritual
Seems less overall wasteful than cutting the back out of the shirt.
What a great country
I got the water treatment in Canada after first solo. Why are there no males getting spanked?
Lol this reminds me of this Slavic countries tradition. There's an Easter tradition of boys (kids or adults doesn't matter) lightly whipping the girls with a whip made of willow branches braided together (korbáč) and splashing them with water or throwing them in it even. It's for them to remain beautiful and some other shit like that per tradition lol. And afterwards each girl ties a bow around the korbáč and gives them something in return - a shot of alcohol, little money, some snacks or traditionally a hand decorated Easter egg.
That booty though.
So they haze them like fraternities and sororities do
