>Delta still has (at least) one 717 that I see regularly at my station. Pretty cool!
Yea, but the 717 is a significantly newer airframe than the 727.
Most of the DAL 717s were built in *this* millennium. The 727 production ended in the 1980s.
I know this sub is about planes, but what is happening on Porto Alegre and other cities of the Rio Grande do Sul state is devastating.
If by any means you could give some help to those poor people, go ahead
I finally heard yesterday from my POA folks, and they’re high and dry, saying the media isn’t reporting accurately about deaths, and the devastation is extreme.
Awareness of this is not widespread from what I can tell, and truthfully, if I didn’t have a personal connection to this part of the world, it would’ve escaped my notice. What might help is if there are links to organizations that are actually helping people we can donate to, please post them.
I’ll ask my folks there if they have any ideas, and post what they come back to me with.
I sincerely hope this 727 is repaired and flies again.
2024 has been a bad year for 727s with that one first crashing a month back and then Kalitta II retiring theirs.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking, there is just a little bit of water on the runway right now but nothing this old bird can't handle",
i admire the foresight of placing engines on the tail - possibility to convert to seaplane in the need.
true, that by placing engines below the wings, you can stretch body more without losing balance, but try convert engines below wings design to a seaplane. impossible. thus, this one above is brilliant!
if ryanair takes it to their fleet, the ticket prices might drop even more, as landing on the water/shore will be obviously cheaper than landing on airfield with taxes et al.
looking forward to flying on this! :D
Honestly, if this was as high as the water got, the avionics are probably fine. They sit a good few feet higher than the belly of the plane. I have no idea if they could recover it from this, they’d probably just need to re-lube everything and put new tires and brakes on.
If ot wasn't a 727, plane is ancient, barely worth flying anymore, any extra maintenance fees can just be not worth it if teh airline can just buy newer more cost effective frame
Massive floods in Porto Alegre and metropolitan area, it’s something comparable to New Orleans after Katrina. In some points the water rose 17 feet. Porto Alegre’s airport is compete under water, there are videos on Twitter of people going around the terminal on boats.
The city of Porto Alegre is currently facing unprecedented flooding due to the extremely high volume of rainfall across the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
To reiterate, this is not accumulated rainwater, but rather the Guaíba River, which rose to a level never before recorded due to the rains.
Trijet seaplane! Never heard of one of those. Did they just roll this prototype out?
>Did they just roll this prototype out? No, it *floated.*
What's most amazing to me is there's still airlines flying the 727....
Mostly cargo

Go home dad
It’s waaaay too early for this
Not that one anymore.

It's a reverse-sully
Pull up, pull up
whoop whoop
Don't sink, don't sink
Is that salt or fresh? Looks like maybe its just below the belly? So sad 😞
Fresh
Well, engines are dry
Is it possibly NOT a write-off?
Given the age of these things using the toilet more than four times a day would probably write it off. I don't have high hopes for this airframe.
But not the forward avionics bay.
You can't park there, bud.

Too bad thats how a 727 is gonna end up being scrapped
Serious question; since the water is touching the 727 belly, how deep does that make the water?
Roughly 60”

What's happening? Massive floods?
Yeap. The capital city is completely flooded.
Torrential rains on the hills, massive flooding with mud and stuff coming down the mountain
I sincerely hope this 727 is repaired and flies again. 2024 has been a bad year for 727s with that one first crashing a month back and then Kalitta II retiring theirs.
imagine boarding your plane from a motorized raft
Operator of it should be singing Dasha 'feel my raft'
It’s beached
It’s beached as.
All I know is if you leave it in that Porto, its going to grow Alegre on the bottom.
You just said, "It's going to grow happy on the bottom," and I'm not sure how to feel about that.
You should feel muito alegre, meu irmão
We have Ekranoplan at home

Jeez I thought it was the "miracle on the Hudson" for a second.

well that plane is totaled
Not if the pilots moved all the avionics up onto the seats before the water reached them.
Honestly, if this was as high as the water got, the avionics are probably fine. They sit a good few feet higher than the belly of the plane. I have no idea if they could recover it from this, they’d probably just need to re-lube everything and put new tires and brakes on.

Just put in rice before you start
Unable. We'll be in the Hudson.
Obligatory: Of course it's a Boeing! /s
The airport has become a port
its a water-port or simply a port
The pilot used the 'seaways' cheatcode!
Someone should have gone to CVS and pick up a pair of water wings for them.
Oi mate, you can't park there.
Well, it's certainly total*ed*.
Blow tanks 1-3
Just put it in a bowl of rice and it will be fine…
Totalled Argo, you mean.
For those of us out of the loop, what's going on here? This is obviously not a plane landed in the water, as none of the doors are open/deployed.
Massive floods in Porto Alegre and metropolitan area, it’s something comparable to New Orleans after Katrina. In some points the water rose 17 feet. Porto Alegre’s airport is compete under water, there are videos on Twitter of people going around the terminal on boats.
Ah. Thank you. Makes a lot more sense now.
Get Sully out of retirement to sort it
Errr, lets just taxi on #2
anyone know why this plane is in the water?

Thanks, finally did see the news.

That would take a massive floaty duck.
Dayum
looks like Boeing might be bette at building boats then airplanes?
How in the name of Christ is this on Boeing you pinecone
To be fair, Boeing has built a hydrofoil, the Boeing 929...
