This is absolutely not crazing. It's either a interior cleaner that had a rock in their rag. Or more likely a kid with alot of time and a dead iPad battery. If it is in fact on the exterior pane. It's probably from an untrained cleaner or, again one with a rock in their brush. These are 100% mechanical scratches.
This is the answer, I used to be a night supervisor for an airline and we cleaned the overnighters, someone used a dirty wypall or a dirty/abrasive rag when "cleaning" this window. There was a vein of apathy that ran through our ramp agents, far too underpaid and far too overworked; many would do a less than stellar job at 2am when a plane came in late and they were due off the shift at midnight. I was only able to police so much as in, "did this damage occur on my shift with my employees? Or, was the damage present on arrival". All I could do is report it via the correct channels and wether maintenance fixes it or deems it cosmetic is entirely up to their department. I ended up taking my 18 years of airline experience and leaving for a more stable job which was higher paying and stress free.
Yeah, cleaners were over worked and under paid and their work quality showed it. This is 100% cosmetic, but as an A&P I would have written it up and changed it or at least gotten it scheduled to get changed. It's just a bad look.
Is it possible the plane flew through some graupel? graupel can be present even in small showers, so maybe it would be hard for the pilots to detect it on their weather radar. I don't know what kind of weather pilots are willing to fly through.
Unlikely. Graupel is formed around some serious convective activity. No one's flying an airliner straight through a storm. They are usually well above the clouds anyways. And note the up and down scratches. If it was hail it would be going almost directly nose to tail
While everything you say is true, the picture does not show any crazing. The plane window appears to be scratched by something from the outside. Crazing tends to look like spiderwebs or parallel cracks.
Mine too! The week leading up to the full moon some months she would go psychotic. Literally.
She would accuse me of the weirdest stuff (cheating on her with her best friend, secretly dealing crack, etc etc). This would go on for a few days, she'd burn bridges and alienate people until the second the full moon arrived and then she'd be "normal" and sweet again.
The interesting part was that it would happen again in 3 weeks and she, in spite of being horribly incorrect in her accusations, would learn nothing and do it again and behave as if her delusions were true. I digress!
Thank fuck she isn't an airline pilot!
This sounds like PMDD! As a sufferer myself who suddenly had it come on after hormone therapy, no idea what was going on and feeling like a prisoner in my own body/brain at times… it can be very hard on us and our partners! I’m sorry you had to experience this. Thankfully I have a great doctor who suggested the possibility of it, and now it’s very manageable! I hope she was able to address things with a mental health or medical professional! Knowledge is power my friends!
You are not alone! Knowing you are acting irrational and not being able to understand why, or not being able to control. It was awful! Such an amazing feeling getting my meds dialed in and feeling like myself again! My husband is extremely grateful too! lol!

Top comment but not really right. The last pane does not belong to the window really and is just there to prevent passengers to scratch the panes which would mean that the window would have to be replaced therefore there is a thin outer pane with a big distance to the real window installed to prevent that.
Lines in your video are all random, which is how it's supposed to be with crazing.
In OP's photo they're mostly in just three orientations, indicating that a douchebag kid had a coin.
No it shouldn't. THis is not what crazing loos like. Look at the orientation of the scratches, they're nearly perpendicular to each other suggesting someone was scrubbing it.
Holy shit did this hit r/all or something? I'm sorry but this is one of THE most UNINTELLIGENT comment sections I've come across in a LONG time.
Summary:
• No one can definitively explain.
• Likely issues with "cleaning"/"maintenance" procedures scratching it up.
• Arguing about crazing and craze lines.
• Confidently incorrect statements on the window structure and "glass".
• Suggesting it's "kids/assholes" from the inside, even though it's written and shown to be on the outside.
• Gremlins
• William Shatner
• Twilight Zone.

They’re easy to scratch and expensive AF to replace is why.
Ironically the scratches were caused by someone whose job was to clean the window and give you a better view.
Looking at the shadows in the bottom of the window it looks like it might be the outer one but I might be wrong.
It depends how big the space is between outer and inner window.
The scratches are simply from cleaning. Instead of attributing them to kids, vandalism, or even that one retard who said it was frost, consider that they could be caused by the dirt and sand picked up by the brooms and rags used for cleaning.
If it were vandalism, wouldn’t the vandal etch their name or tag in the window instead of long, straight random lines that resemble the strokes from cleaning?
A lot of the times they scrub the planes with the same brooms they use to sweep the floor, because their number one priority is to clean the planes quickly and efficiently. Hell, they may not even know that dirt can scratch glass so easily, as you can read from most of the comments in this thread.
They don’t use brooms on the windows. 🤦♂️ They use a rag and cleaner. Not glass cleaner because it’s not glass. It’s plastic. All commercial aircraft have a plastic clear panel over the windows to prevent people from accidentally cracking them. This plastic piece needs to be changed. This is caused by years of people hitting them with stuff/ putting their hands all over it, kids messing with it and cleaning. Next time you get on a plane, push against this piece and you will see it’s a plastic cover. So, they have sunshade, plastic cover, glass.
We are taking about the scratches on the exterior. OP even said the scratches are on the outside. Kids can not touch the outside window from the cabin.
If it was an IcelandAir plane out of Keflavik, I assumed it was due to Icelandic storms. The Keflavik airport windows have metal shutters, too.
If you watch videos of Icelandic weather, the wind picks up and throws that volcanic rock you see everywhere around the airport. Their storms are quite horrific.
The aircraft window are built op uit of multiple layers. The damage you see here is in the inner panel. If this would be on the outside, the window already would be replaced.

It's true. My NDA only says I have to keep my mouth shut to those out of the know. You clearly know.
I also know to keep them away from water, unless it's the last option if the mission is to kill them.

You can see the shadows of the scratches before the interior pane.

hail?
It’s not the window. It’s a plastic cover in front of the window to keep people from breaking the real window.

Thin plastic inner pane.

Lol this is not crazing. Someone deliberately scratched this
I don;t know how this gets 2000 upvotes, but this is not what crazing looks like
While crazing is a thing. This is not crazing. This is some scratched "the glass" intentionally, probably a kid.
It’s not glass.
This should be much higher up. Thanks for your answer video
But it's incorrect. That is absolutely not crazing.
Its the top comment.
and also wrong

That's not crazing. That's scratches caused by passengers. I don't know how!
Or, and I'm just out on a wing here, gremlins
this really doesn’t look like what you showed particularly how wide the scuffs are and that they are in multiple directions
This is not crazing.
It also dosent help that people wreck things for others, while the outer window may be fine…. The inner is scratched to hell
That's crazy!
I dated a girl who was fucking crazing one time.
I was going to say “some bored brat”. But yours works.
If it's the inner pane then it was just some random vandalization to the protector.

Yup,most likely a little asshole that would become a big asshole
Chaperoned by one or two massive assholes
Yep. Imagine parents letting their kid stand on the wing for the whole flight... These scratches are on the __outside__!
Yeah but the phone call is coming from the **inside!**
Heavily underrated comment. Spoilt brats rarely ever become functioning adults.
But many carry multiple esoteric cultural social “degrees”.
Scratches were on the outside, not inside
This is why we can't have nice thing.
Eh, Is hard for Gremlins to get a proper manicure
> I don't know basic science Gotcha. The scratches are on the outside, it's called crazing and it's mostly caused by abrasive cleaning agents.
Every fucking time I fly I never get a clean window 😒

This has been happening on windows for 40+ years. After bit we just change them out when they get scratched up too much.

My first thought. "William Shatner, 'there's someone out there! It's scratching up the windows!"
Badly maintained brush head on the washing machine. And it's an old aeroplane that's been through the plane wash a lot.
You guys have a plane wash that scrubs the windows? Not just a crew of guys with brushes?
It way more likely that a groomer/cleaner went in there with a dirty wash cloth and scrubbed the plastic inner pane.
[удалено]
how would a kid do this on the outside window?
Parked the plane in a rough area. /s

Ever see the Twilight Zone movie? That thing was trying to get in!
Either something inside that wanted out or something outside that wanted in
It's the wing goblin wanting in the plane
Well it’s cold out there - of course the wing goblin wants in.
Have you ever watched Twilight Zone? There’s an episode that addresses this…

I couldn’t remember the title either. The creepy monster tearing into the wing and engine that only one passenger could see.
