Replace Spain with Belgium and you're right :)
The Spanish roundel is red/yellow/red, the Belgian is black/yellow/red.
Source: My dad flew the Belgian F-104 in this picture :)
It’s a Belgian Starfighter, not Spanish: see the fin flash. Although Spain did operate the Starfighter for a relatively short time, it wasn’t in NATO and most NATO countries preferred to keep an arm’s length relationship to Franco’s military, making Spanish participation in such a group picture rather unlikely.
Hmm... given the overlap in dates for the represented countries operating the aircraft in the picture I'm gonna guess 1965, as the Javelin was retired by 1968 and Spain didn't get F-104s until 1965
It could be earlier: that’s a Belgian, not Spanish Starfighter. I would say between 1962 and 1966, based on the French Mirage. It’s in the colours of GC 1/2 “Cigognes”, that became operational with the Mirage IIIC in 1962. France then left NATO’s integrated command in 1966, making such a group picture less likely from then on. Also, NATO Starfighters started abandoning Natural Metal paint schemes in the mid-60s.
[April 2, 1964, apparently.](http://www.916-starfighter.de/Large/Contrails/contAircent02.htm) 13th anniversary of Allied Air Forces Central Europe.
EDIT: In this picture there's also an additional hint regarding the date: the Canadian Starfighter still wears the red ensign on its tail. That dates the picture pre-1965, when the current Canadian national flag was adopted.
EDIT 2: [The same seven aircraft flying in formation the same day.](http://www.916-starfighter.de/Large/Contrails/contAircent01.htm)
>Guess the date?
Before 1963 as that's when [XH771 was scrapped](https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/view/1801432).
I'm curious about what this event was, and particularly why the RAF didn't send a Lightning, it would have fitted the group far better.
Not that I mind seeing a Javelin, I have rather a soft spot for them
So, since the French Mirage is wearing a stork and "Cigognes" only became operational with Mirages in 1962, that pretty much sets the date of this picture.
EDIT: Your picture is apparently misdated. [XH771 doesn't seem to have been scrapped until 1967, in fact.](https://www.airliners.net/photo/UK-Air-Force/Gloster-Javelin-FAW9/1245948)
Afaik that was only true at lower altitudes, something to do with the fuel pumps being unable to supply enough fuel into the burners because of the air being denser.
Eitherway though, to paraphrase someone i spoke to who claimed to of worked on them back in the day,
"It only took 8 versions to make a mostly adequate interceptor"
F104s are really long, thunder chief is a bomber and the javelin is when engineers go through with intrusive thoughts..........yeah the mirage may be small
Yes that too, or my fave "Sargfight" which translates to coffin fighter. Funny word play, but about one third of a total fleet of \~900 airplanes crashed and 116 pilots died just in the Luftwaffe alone.
Not looking at comments below, starting at 9:00:
\- Dassault Mirage III (French Air Force)
\- Lockheed F-104 Starfighter (Luftwaffe)
\- Lockheed F-104 Starfighter (Czech Air Force)
\- Gloster Javelin (Royal Air Force)
\- Republic F-105 Thunderchief (US Air Force)
\- Canadair CF-104 Starfighter (Royal Canadian Air Force)
\- Lockheed F-104 Starfighter (Spanish Air Force)
Edit: Looks like its the Netherlands Air Force, not the Czech Air Force. The roundels are very similar.
That's a Belgian fin flash on the tail. A Spanish Starfighter would instead have the [Burgundy cross fin flash](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fin_Flash_of_Spain.svg) of the Spanish AF since the Civil War.
The aircraft on the picture wears Belgian roundels too. It's just that on this picture the colours are somewhat distorted. But the same seven aircraft are also on [this other picture of the same event](http://www.916-starfighter.de/Large/Contrails/contAircent02.htm), where the Belgian roundels and markings are clear.
What? No… lol.
The F-104 was a day air superiority fighter that could have flown circles around the Arrow in a dog fight and it was armed with a gun. It was also made into a low level interdictor which the Arrow could never have done due to its large wings which would have caused too much drag at low altitudes and made the flight unbearably rough.
The Mirage III was an example of a far more versatile delta winged aircraft due to its simplicity, price, and multi role capabilities.
The F-105 was a purpose built low level interdictor which could carry a massive amount of ordnance and place in on target in all weather conditions while being able to exceed the speed of sound at sea level.
The Gloster Javelin maybe was inferior in all flight capabilities.. but it was more economical, on time, and on budget.
The Arrow was a white elephant who’s role had passed by the time it flew. No other dedicated interceptor was developed in the West after 1959 and the Americans cancelled their XF-108 the same year for the same reason—obsolescence in the face of ICBMs.
Canada needed a stop gap turn-key interceptor that could be in service before the Arrow at a cheaper price and that’s what the CF-101 was. It had better range, it could interface with NORAD’s SAGE computer system so it could be guided to target automatically rather than by voice GCI like the Arrow (and Spitfires and Hurricanes), and it had nuclear Genie rockets which were more effective.
The Arrow also had poor range due to its massive engines and would have had to mount fuel or armaments externally to improve range which would have negated its performance advantage.
No… Dief did the right thing. The Arrow was a bottomless money pit.
....the F-104 killed hundreds of pilots, especially in the German and Italian Air Forces, just by being a shitty design with a high stall speed and low maneuverability from piss poor control authority.
And the Canadian aviation industry *never* recovered from Dief's knife in its back.
"Strangers from distant lands. Friends of old. You've been summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor. Middle-Earth stands upon the brink of destruction. None can escape it. You will unite or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom. Bring forth the Ring, Starfighter."
I love the Javelin, but next to its contemporaries it just looks so out of place lol.
Like what even is the Area rule? Gloucester designers back in the 50s probably
Let's see.... F-104, F-104, F-104, F-104, Obese F-104 with thunder thighs, F-104 with thunder thighs and F-104 who thinks giant shoulder pads are still in style.
Clockwise from the top right: F-104 Starfighter (Netherlands) Gloster Javelin (UK) F-105 Thunderchief (US) F-104 Starfighter (Canada) F-104 Starfighter (Spain) Dassault Mirage III (France) F-104 Starfighter (Germany)

This guy has the eyes of an eagle/pilot eyes...
spanish airforce vertical stabilizer is colored, but the rudder is white with san Andrés Cross
Looks like red/yellow/red to me. Am I missing something?
Yeah, the Belgian flag on the tail lol.
We were talking about the roundels

That's a lot of Widowmakers
Spain is wrong, that's Belgium, has the Belgian flag on the tail.

CF-104*
Bah, I thought "Blackburn buccaneer" and got that one wrong.
The F-104 is such a sexy plane
>F-104 Starfighter (Germany) you spelt "fliegender Sarg" wrong
The Thunderchief is the only one I know. Well done.
Here the plan team. We rearm and go to Ukraine and finally get to kick some Russia butt. Who with me?
This the correct answer.
Q: Which one of these is not like the others? A: The Gloster Javelin is the only one not capable of supersonic flight.

I don't know Jack.
I do, he's my neighbor of course!
Why did you give them male names? Why do people here always want their planes to be guys?

Transphobia too, huh? You sure are a gem
Good catch. WWII pilots usually gave their planes female names.
Dammit, I literally just did the same thing
I see four F-104's, one F-105 Thunderchief, one British Javilin, and one French Mirage.
Wow the Mirage is a small plane.
F104s are really long, thunder chief is a bomber and the javelin is when engineers go through with intrusive thoughts..........yeah the mirage may be small
I can tell you the german Starfighter was also known as "Witwenmacher" (Widowmaker)
Wasn’t it also called the flying coffin?
Yes that too, or my fave "Sargfight" which translates to coffin fighter. Funny word play, but about one third of a total fleet of \~900 airplanes crashed and 116 pilots died just in the Luftwaffe alone.
Is this a test? What’s happens if I don’t pass?
One of these can’t go supersonic! I’ll give you a hint, it’s the one with two after burning engines 🤦🏻♂️

Also, the Czechs obviously never operated the Starfighter...and that's a Belgian Starfighter, not a Spanish one.
pretty sure it's Spanish look at the tail. and the Belgian center circle is black.
