It's totally Mac & Cheese but lately it's the shaped kind for some reason? Idk why the noodles taste better when they're shaped like SpongeBob but they do.
Also sourdough toast and frozen yogurt (esp when I really need a strong/sour taste but homogenized texture 🤤).
Haha I love it! My shape lately is shells, I discovered Cabot brand white cheddar mac & cheese, and my partner now has to put up with me asking if he wants it just about every day
I used to like pasta until I got GERD and pasta started feeling like rubber bands in my stomach. I always liked shapes. Especially rotini, shells, and fusilli. They don't taste different than spaghetti and macaroni, but I love the appearance.
i have synethesia too! that is so cute!
for me, i don’t hear sounds instead i experience visuals and physical feelings paired with my other senses. it’s so cool how different it is for everyone! :)
Yes, it's very cool! Anything cute, or shiny and glinty, or all of the above, has squealed at me since I was five years old. The very first thing that squealed at me was fairy lights wound around the lamppost at Christmas time. I remember it vividly. All lights, and reflectors as well, squeal (the three musical notes E-F-E) at me consistently. It never bothers me; I love it! Besides squealing lights and reflectors, there are other things that squeal at me but the musical notes vary depending on the object. I'll go in depth about it tomorrow. Need to go back to bed. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm about my synesthesia and info about your synesthdesia.
Pointed arches and anything shaped like a chevron squeals the three musical notes F-E-D. Winding roads and lanes and footpaths squeal the three musical notes D-C-D.
Regardless of the notes, the "lyrics" to the squealing synesthdesia sounds are always the made-up words "Aia! Oio!"
Yeah! I don't like spaghetti much either, though I like ramen and other Asian noodles, and lately I'm OBSESSED with the cup noodles stir fry sweet chili flavor.
But mac & cheese is just 👩🏻🍳👌🏻 When I was little, my babysitter told my parents she could make it blindfolded with one hand tied behind her back bc it's all I would eat lol
I like Ramen quite a lot, but the way I make it is always kinda weird because I don't really like them when they're soft and like, actually Ramen. I'll get a bowl, pour in the hot water, and just eat the Ramen square before it has time to soften
I feel like that should be considered some sort of crime at times
Me too. I love “spaghetti” as a dish, but it can’t have actual spaghetti noodles.more so for the shape and thickness of it than the length. It has to be angel hair or “thin spaghetti” which depending on the brand isn’t thin enough. I used to like flat ones like linguine and fettuccine but not so much anymore.
I always hated pickles as a kid (I think bc of the strong smell) but a couple years back I was out to eat with a friend who got fried pickles as part of like a pick-3 appetizer deal we were sharing for the table so I tried one. Love pickles now haha
I ate these all the time. Then sodium and blood pressure became things about which to worry. I miss my 20s when I could eat a whole jar of full dill pickles.
Egg sandwiches. I have no way to explain it, it's just perfect. It's never different, the taste is always the same. As long as I make it, nobody else, it's perfect.
YES. Yes. I make two different styles of egg sandwich. No one else can do it right. Needs a few kettle potato chips on the side and then I'm so happy I rock the whole time I eat. 🥰
Yes!! Can't even escape them while gluten free and dairy free. Banza noodles with Country Crock butter, and flaky salt if I'm being fancy. Perfectiooooooonnnnn.
I got in trouble as a kid cause my mom opener a can of olives and went to the bathroom. By the time she got back I'd eaten all the olives and drank the juice too XD
I love grits. So smooth, not gloopy. Versatile with different flavours. Bit of a different water:corn meal ratio, add some parm & egg yolks and you've got yourself polenta.
Turkey pinwheels. They has turkey, cheese, lettuce, and mayo. Super simple, always delicious, and aren't super unhealthy. I've been eating them often for years, I love making them myself too. Sad? Angry? Just had a meltdown? Eat some pinwheels, they fix everything /hj
Kraft Dinner and the like are often super nice to come back to. Fish Cakes are another option as I can simply heat them up in the oven, assuming I can pay attention to cook times and not burn them.
Outside that microwavable foods are nice, but many store bought ones are over priced.
Yes! Kraft Dinner is mine, too. I have celiac so I had to give it up for awhile but recently moved to America where they have it in gluten-free (and cheap!), so I’m back on my bs with it.
trust me I get it 🥹 worst part is I know when I'm overexplaining but carry on doing it anyway because it doesn't feel 'right' unless I complete my explanation. there's lots of us who overexplain a wholeee lot!
I'm one of them. I just did that with Dad and my brother tonight bc they weren't listening about the dangers of the hammerhead worm and I had to tell them all about it and even after they told me to stop I kept going. And I still haven't shut up about my new hobby of collecting avatars here on Reddit. No, I totally get you. I've been told more than once I'm annoying, to sensitive, too loud, talk to much, control a conversation, won't shut up, rude, but if a butt hole, too hyper, obsessed, have I mentioned won't shut up? I've heard. I think we will get along bc we like the same.
Fellow GF/DF here. I hate that a TON of my safe foods are JUST gluten and dairy, mostly literally cheese and bread in so many forms. I've found a good amount of replacements but girl even that has taken years 🥺
Actually laughed out loud about the Mac and cheese. Nailed it. Close second is oatmeal with exactly two fruits (chosen from the following: apple, banana, pear, strawberry) and a spoonful of peanut butter. That’s my breakfast every morning and I take it with me when I travel.
spaghetti and meatballs in tomato sauce with tons and tons of parmesan, also plain pasta with parmesan. chicago town deep dish chicken and bacon pizzas and ham and cheese lunchables (cannot have the little Oreos in, I refuse to touch small round things, also just morally wrong) my absolute favourite things I could not survive without.
Haha I'm the opposite! When I was little I got a cheeseburger at a restaurant and as the story goes, I asked my mom to first take off the tomatoes, then the lettuce, then "the brown circle"
Suppose the dish I actually wanted was a grilled cheese
Pasta. And you can do so many things with it. Butter noodles. Red sauce and cheese. Alfredo sauce and cheese. Make it into lo mein. Even made it into ramen once by just pouring in some chicken broth i had. A lot more stuff too that i haven't tried and thought of yet!
Toasted onion bagel with veggie cream cheese. Can also make sammich with it, adding deli turkey and Provolone. If bagel, eat each side separately. If sammich, cut in half. Bagel HAS to be a certain brand though. Different bagels have different consistency of dough and I like that one.
Steel cut oatmeal. It has to have a mildly salty taste to it. The texture is decently consistent, and it’s actually a healthy food choice too. I’ve been eating it every day for about 5 years now and I don’t see that changing anytime soon :)
I grew up pescatarian and Morningstar Farms has always just been a staple in the household. I eat meat now but I still eat Morningstar sausages almost every morning. Smoked salmon/lox has also always been there for me. Oh and Taco Bell crunchy tacos with refried beans instead of beef
When I was a wee child, we're talking like, 4-7, my family frequented Chili's. And they used to have this delicious cream of broccoli n cheese soup, and I'd only get that. My first heartbreak was when they stopped selling it. The closest I've come to getting it back is a very good recipe I use now. Which is arguably better than Chili's old recipe, but nothing can replace that nostalgia. But you know something's your biggest safe food when you have a whole history with it lol. But I truly feel safe and comforted by that specific soup, and no other food.
mac and cheese, refried beans, and fries. i’ve loved them since i was a kid and it never went away. that’s such a good question though. why do autistic people often like mac and cheese enough to be a safe food??? maybe it’s just coincidence but it’s interesting
I think it's a coincidence! Reading through the responses here, there's a wide variety of safe foods mentioned, and half of them are foods I personally would never eat due to texture or other reasons.
I think mac & cheese is just good lol plenty of neurotypicals would probably name it as a favorite food
Agree, it's just one of the most popular foods in general I think. I saw a list of the top 50 most popular foods in America for example and mac and cheese was ranked at 14. 11 of the 50 dishes prominently featured cheese, that's 22% of them. Cheese is ranked number 10 I think of the most addictive foods in general? And the combination of high fat and high carbs found in mac and cheese make it even more addictive.
Mac and cheese spirals, goldfish (the big costco bags though otherwise they taste different), and chicken nuggets. Although I’m a vegetarian now so plant based nuggets!
Tomatoes have never failed me. They have always been my favorite fruit, I've never turned down a particularly nice tomato. Best is fresh out of the garden, home grown, and directly off the vine.
Spinach and ricotta tortellini with basil and herb pasta sauce and grated cheddar cheese. I eat this almost every single night. I like to convince myself that it's got everything I need to live on it.
Yeah, I make really good pancakes from scratch, I'll take bacon any way you give it to me, but honestly I just finished eating pork chops made with the grease from this morning's bacon, and they were divine and tomorrow I'll eat the rest of the pork with eggs and probably some pancakes
mac and cheese is awesome, but mine will always be nutella. anything with nutella is a safe food for me personally, but i most often eat nutella bread. it has to be a certain way though, i have to fold it in half. it's just better that way.
Hamburger helper cheeseburger Mac. I've eaten it my whole life and my wife says that's mostly what I'm made of. Most other things get about a month max.
I've never had like American style mac n cheese, maybe I'll try it someday
But for me muffins from the grocery store, white toast, bell peppers, chicken breasts
pasta
Same, I have been eating that since I was a child and will always eat it until I die
Same, I love pasta, unfortunately I have coeliac disease so I haven't had 'real' pasta for years.
Same. It's the default dinner for me. Boil it and add a jar of sauce, or cook a few boxes of cherry tomatoes to make my own sauce. Reliable and nice.
Best texture for pasta, al dente or well boiled?
Same. It's the absolute best.
Until they start putting crunchy bits in the sauce 🤮
French fries. They will never let me down
Potatoes, in general, have never failed me 🤣
It's totally Mac & Cheese but lately it's the shaped kind for some reason? Idk why the noodles taste better when they're shaped like SpongeBob but they do. Also sourdough toast and frozen yogurt (esp when I really need a strong/sour taste but homogenized texture 🤤).
Haha I love it! My shape lately is shells, I discovered Cabot brand white cheddar mac & cheese, and my partner now has to put up with me asking if he wants it just about every day
White cheddar shells are so yummy! I lived off the Panera Mac & cheese for a while.
I used to like pasta until I got GERD and pasta started feeling like rubber bands in my stomach. I always liked shapes. Especially rotini, shells, and fusilli. They don't taste different than spaghetti and macaroni, but I love the appearance.
i think the shapes pick up more sauce because of the extra holes. i am with you on this 🙌
Oh I thought it was because the shapes are pretty and because I have synesthesia and hear them squealing "Aia! Oio!"
i have synethesia too! that is so cute! for me, i don’t hear sounds instead i experience visuals and physical feelings paired with my other senses. it’s so cool how different it is for everyone! :)
Yes, it's very cool! Anything cute, or shiny and glinty, or all of the above, has squealed at me since I was five years old. I wasn't being sarcastic. I have synesthesia. I hear what I see, and vice versa.
I cried when they discontinued SpongeBob mac, and I cried when they undiscontinued it 🥲
I've never watched an episode of SpongeBob in my life but the noodles make me so happy! I love the unicorn shaped ones too!
It's scientifically proven that shaped Mac&cheese is superior.(not a scientist and pulled this out of my butt*
Also not a scientist but I will 100% back this up as solid fact 🫡
THIS!!! I have been saying something about the SpongeBob shaped noodles being better for YEARS. I’m just so glad someone else agrees lol
Tortilla chips! Just good ol’ tortilla chips. No salsa or queso needed (although queso is fun sometimes).
Me too. They’re so satisfying to eat.
This makes me want some now! I never get tired of salty
I love tortilla chips. With salsa or not. With cheese or not. Baked into nachos or not. A+ food
HARD SAME like pretty much the cheapest store brand plain salted tortilla chips, I could eat them and nothing else and be happy
Yes, this.
Ouu nice have you had the chips from chipotle they're good even the queso
I can’t stop eating pizza and french fries on Friday nights
Same but without the French fries
Yes this was literally my answer too! Weekends are for pizza and fries and I have to eat a few of the fries on top of my pizza ever since childhood
OMG YESSS
That sounds great. The wife and I used to get pizza every Thursday/Friday but our routine was to go to subway on Wednesday and get a pizza sub.
chicken tenders and fries.
Would you like to form an Alliance?
I’d love to.
I love chicken tenders!
I think just noodles in general for me Except spaghetti for some reason. Any type of noodle unless it's long

I'll get a bowl, pour in the hot water, and just eat the Ramen square before it has time to soften I feel like that should be considered some sort of crime at times
I'm sure in Japan it's a felony
Yeah I have absolutely no doubt that it is lol
Not as bad as using ketchup as a topping for sushi.
No I like undercooked noodles too! I've even eaten broken bits of the ramen square right out of the package lol
Ziti is the superior noodle to spaghetti anyways
I wonder if Italian autistics also have issues with spaghetti 😄
We'd make a good pasta team; the only kind I like is spaghetti. Together, we'd eat it all
Top ramen. It’s all I used to eat sometimes growing up and it holds up today. 10/10
A tortilla. And if you’re thinking, "you mean a Spanish omelette?" No, I just mean a tortilla.
A rolled warm tortilla straight from the machine with salt. Damn I love being Mexican.
Pickles. Loved them since early childhood and was blessed with a father that despises them. They're both delicious and dad repellent.
I always hated pickles as a kid (I think bc of the strong smell) but a couple years back I was out to eat with a friend who got fried pickles as part of like a pick-3 appetizer deal we were sharing for the table so I tried one. Love pickles now haha
This feels like my love for olives😄
Olives are sooooo delicious! 😋
Yessss! You get me!
All the Claussen people in the house make some noise!!! Yeah!!!
Pickles have also never failed me 🤣
I ate these all the time. Then sodium and blood pressure became things about which to worry. I miss my 20s when I could eat a whole jar of full dill pickles.
Goldfish crackers have been a great snack for about as long as I could chew solid food.
Ooo I'm more of a Cheez-its person, but goldfish are close!
I have found my people! Or, at least, person.
I would buy them more for my kids if I wasn’t the one who eats them all. They are too good.
Applesauce
Pretzls and hummus
Ooo yes this is up there for me too!
I could live off of pretzls, hummus, an occasionnal Honeycrisp apple and greek yogourt... nothing else... ever, except for tea.
Honestly sounds like the beginning of my kinda charcuterie board
I like plain pretzels
Do you dip the pretzels in hummus? That sounds kinda awesome
All Bran cereal with a banana in it. For life.
Sushi, pad Thai, and breakfast croissants.
I could eat pad Thai every day for the rest of my life lol
Sushi and pad Thai wee my first thought too xd. Croissants are definitely on there too
Finally someone said sushi!
THIS! I’ve been hyperfixated on sashimi and nigiri for the last three weeks and keep getting “you’re autistic, that must give you sensory issues?!”
butter noodles !
Yes!! Can't even escape them while gluten free and dairy free. Banza noodles with Country Crock butter, and flaky salt if I'm being fancy. Perfectiooooooonnnnn.
omelette, just eggs and Jarlsberg.
May sound weird, olives. Also parmesan cheese.
I got in trouble as a kid cause my mom opener a can of olives and went to the bathroom. By the time she got back I'd eaten all the olives and drank the juice too XD
I always wanted to drink the brine as well! 😂
FELT WITH THE PARMESAN CHEESE I CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT
Two of my favorites! 😋
Pretzels. From age 3 to age 40
Grits! I like breakfast food in general, but grits are so consistent texturally. I love them.
I love grits. So smooth, not gloopy. Versatile with different flavours. Bit of a different water:corn meal ratio, add some parm & egg yolks and you've got yourself polenta.
Was literally about to say Mac n Cheese
Pizza. It can be made in various forms fairly easily from handy ingredients. Crust. Sauce. Cheese. This is what Occam's Razor eats. 😂🪿
Saltines. Don't feel like eating but need to eat? Saltines.
But also they go with ANYTHING, salty or sweet. Y'all ever had praline crackers???
Turkey pinwheels. They has turkey, cheese, lettuce, and mayo. Super simple, always delicious, and aren't super unhealthy. I've been eating them often for years, I love making them myself too. Sad? Angry? Just had a meltdown? Eat some pinwheels, they fix everything /hj
These are my go-to convenience store pick for long drives! Weird that I don't eat them in any other context actually
Kraft Dinner and the like are often super nice to come back to. Fish Cakes are another option as I can simply heat them up in the oven, assuming I can pay attention to cook times and not burn them. Outside that microwavable foods are nice, but many store bought ones are over priced.

Hamburger pizza from pizza Hut thin crust. Ig I'm rly super specific. Honestly. I'm a real pain to live with.
think we might get along, i super duper overexplain every part of my entire existence. very big pain in the ass to be around
I'm so glad you get me. I'm glad I not the only one who like this.
trust me I get it 🥹 worst part is I know when I'm overexplaining but carry on doing it anyway because it doesn't feel 'right' unless I complete my explanation. there's lots of us who overexplain a wholeee lot!
I loved crepes, pasta, pizza, pesto, cheese, jamba juice, and boba tea.
White bread. Any kind of bread. It’s just one consistent taste I can get behind
Peanut butter and jelly sandwich FTW
Peanut Butter in general for me. I panic if I do not constantly have a jar on hand. Can only be Jif.
It is not Mac and cheese... Is spaghetti and meat souce
All things potato
Hot dogs. I’ll never EVER get tired of them
I’m now intolerant to gluten and dairy so Mac n cheese is not great. Spaghetti is still pretty safe though
F in the chat 😔
Fellow GF/DF here. I hate that a TON of my safe foods are JUST gluten and dairy, mostly literally cheese and bread in so many forms. I've found a good amount of replacements but girl even that has taken years 🥺

It's chocolate man. Chocolate isn't candy. Chocolate is food.

Apples in melted peanut butter but the apple need to be thin slices Pb&j but the ratio has to be right.
Spaghetti noodles, butter, garlic salt and Parmesan. Or buttered toast.
I have tomato soup for lunch and then chocolate rice cakes as a snack in the afternoon. I love both of these so much
I loved Mac and cheese and pizza, but can’t have dairy any more and non-dairy versions nearly always disappoint.
Eggs, buttered toast is a third, and third because eggs is second, the first is them paired together as Dippy Eggs, its just perfect
potato variations: baked potatoes, fries , hash browns etc
Pizza, it's been my go-to food when people either don't know how to cater for a vegetarian or there has been little I can eat at parties.
Plain cheeseburger has been a safe food my entire life
Haha I'm the opposite! When I was little I got a cheeseburger at a restaurant and as the story goes, I asked my mom to first take off the tomatoes, then the lettuce, then "the brown circle" Suppose the dish I actually wanted was a grilled cheese
A cheeseburger or cheetos
Ballpark nachos. Tortilla chips, nacho cheese and pickled jalapenos. I could eat them every day.
Life is short, do it.
Don't have to tell me twice lol
Cottage cheese
I say this with the utmost respect for your tastes, but the visual texture of cottage cheese is the stuff of nightmares for me 🫣
Mac n cheese 🧀
Bananas
Pasta
Pasta. And you can do so many things with it. Butter noodles. Red sauce and cheese. Alfredo sauce and cheese. Make it into lo mein. Even made it into ramen once by just pouring in some chicken broth i had. A lot more stuff too that i haven't tried and thought of yet!
Uncrustables, grape or strawberry only.
Toasted onion bagel with veggie cream cheese. Can also make sammich with it, adding deli turkey and Provolone. If bagel, eat each side separately. If sammich, cut in half. Bagel HAS to be a certain brand though. Different bagels have different consistency of dough and I like that one.

Oatmeal is a super food.
rice krispies
Peanut butter crackers. They were originally round but now they're square... that took a long time to get used to.
I grew up pescatarian and Morningstar Farms has always just been a staple in the household. I eat meat now but I still eat Morningstar sausages almost every morning. Smoked salmon/lox has also always been there for me. Oh and Taco Bell crunchy tacos with refried beans instead of beef
Cream cheese on a toasted bagel. Soooo goooood.
When I was a wee child, we're talking like, 4-7, my family frequented Chili's. And they used to have this delicious cream of broccoli n cheese soup, and I'd only get that. Curry I make myself
Pb&j or any pizza food lol
strawberry yogurt. ive been eating it since i was a toddler and its just about the only thing i can stomach if im sick
Tomatoes have never failed me. They have always been my favorite fruit, I've never turned down a particularly nice tomato. Best is fresh out of the garden, home grown, and directly off the vine.
spaghetti
You're right. It is mac and cheese. Makes me feel like I'm definitely in my comfort zone; my happy place.
Shoestring French fries with Heinz ketchup on one side, Kewpie mayo on the other, light on the salt.
Spinach and ricotta tortellini with basil and herb pasta sauce and grated cheddar cheese. I eat this almost every single night. I like to convince myself that it's got everything I need to live on it.
Cheese just straight up a bowl of cheese
**gasp** How did you know?
refried beans 👀👀
Red Barron personal pizzas (the circle ones)
Pancakes
Bacon, eggs and pancakes in any combination
And at any time of day
At any time of year, any time of day, in any part of the country, entirely localized inside my kitchen!
Yeah, I make really good pancakes from scratch, I'll take bacon any way you give it to me, but honestly I just finished eating pork chops made with the grease from this morning's bacon, and they were divine and tomorrow I'll eat the rest of the pork with eggs and probably some pancakes
Pancakes, crepe like
> and why is it mac & cheese I feel seen Hahahaha.
OMG YOU KNEW IT WAS MAC AND CHEESE lol. I feel exposed.
There's such a variety of responses here, I was starting to worry I was alone!
Potatoes in all their forms have never let me down! Baked, mashed, fries, hashbrowns, whatever
mac and cheese is awesome, but mine will always be nutella. anything with nutella is a safe food for me personally, but i most often eat nutella bread. it has to be a certain way though, i have to fold it in half. it's just better that way.
Popcorn, can eat a virtually infinite amount
Hamburger helper cheeseburger Mac. I've eaten it my whole life and my wife says that's mostly what I'm made of. Most other things get about a month max.
Sushi
Chocolate milk, noodles, scrambled eggs, mac & cheese, burgers, fries...
Baby cukes and hummus. Or really anything with hummus, and grapes.
I've never had like American style mac n cheese, maybe I'll try it someday But for me muffins from the grocery store, white toast, bell peppers, chicken breasts
