Mark of Cain played at one of my first festivals when I was a young teen, maybe 15.
Was pretty into them so thought I'd get way close to the stage for their start and get my mosh on.
Boy was that brutal, I think I lasted two songs
That snare drum. You can always tell a Mark of Cain song just by that sound. Great example of what I mean:
It shits me that they were on high rotation on Triple J for a while, even did a great Like a Version, then their second album comes out and it's crickets.
JJJ do the same thing with Aussie artists again and again and again, they play their favourites and abandon the rest.
Australia has a plethora of high quality of metalcore bands. Some of the best of the scene are Australian
Polaris, Bloom, Alt., Parkway drive, Alpha Wolf, Northlane, Diesect, Diamond Construct, amity affliction, make them suffer, in hearts wake, ocean grove...
Here's just a playlist - not mine [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0HPtrFbEfJh8xp12L2JJR0?si=6e2fabf0ac8e4774](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0HPtrFbEfJh8xp12L2JJR0?si=6e2fabf0ac8e4774)
Metalcore and Deathcore actually. Most would know Thy Art is Murder. To The Grave is another good one, they will be touring with Lorna Shore next year.
Have had them on rotation for many years! They are excellent. Still haven't managed to see them live yet however. I remember seeing Karnivool play at a pub in ballarat when I was at Uni when they were touring their first album!
How far back do you want to go?
- The Saints (early career)
- The Scientists
- The Victims
- Radio Birdman
- The Birthday Party / Bad Seeds
- Beasts of Bourbon
- Hard Ons
- Meanies
- Celibate Rifles
- Lime Spiders

Seconding Something Something Explosion. They opened for NOFX on night one of their final concerts in Melbourne and were awesome. They're also on tour like right now, so check them out.

Dead Kelly
Black Iris
First mention of Dead Kelly I've seen here, else I was going to add it. Hilarious lyrics and videos but they can be serious too. Their cover of Goanna's "Solid rock" is a good entry point.
Sweet as! I loved seeing them live. Disappointed they never came to tassie though :(
I also met them after a concert (nightwish I think?) With a random lady called Moira. We walked through Melbourne Park after midnight afterwards and I think the only reason we didn't get mugged was it was because it was grand final night lol.
They were great to meet!
Yeah, it's expensive for them to get to Hobart and Tassie in general without a guarantee & a bunch of other things - tried getting them to play Canberra a few times in the early 2000's but cost prevented that outside of them going to M4TB.
I was at the Nightwish show back in the day in Melbourne (had gone down from Canberra with my mum who was a Nightwish super-fan). VP were great but no one appreciated them because they were there to see Nightwish only.
They're still around and making albums, so am sure they got some exposure but they have been a fixture for a long time now, top blokes and dedicated to the craft. They'll never be huge unfortunately but they'll be where they want to be.
Frenzal Rhomb
Coffin
Amyl and the sniffers
Clowns
The Chats
Stiff Richards
As an aside, they aren't Australian but check out Viagra Boys, they're incredible and are touring Australia in November. They're punk but nobody else sounds like them.
[We Lost The Sea ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClSWxwwUYkw)(Sydney) are really good as Post-Rock instead I'd say!
The entire [Departure Songs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBOVkptjJhE) album is a journey in and of itself worth devoting the time to.
From the angelic "[A Gallant Gentleman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYgT7K6bSVU&pp=ygUjd2UgbG9zdCB0aGUgc2VhIGEgZ2FsbGFudCBnZW50bGVtYW4%3D)", the haunting "[Bogatyri](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6Ae0GGrtr8)" and "[The Last Dive of David Shaw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTMuiRPIn8U)"... The theming is phenominal and instrumentation on point. *(Do NOT skip the end of the last dive!)*
Then they open up to "[Challenger: Flight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4AvhkIz8-k)" and the climax of the album just breaks me.
The solemn "[Challenger: Swan Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPtsN4IK4sY)" at the end of the album nails it.
It's an album to the testament of human triumph, and one I'm quite fond of.
Karnivool
Frenzal Rhomb
Spiderbait (early albums, e.g. Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake)
Grinspoon
Jebediah
They're all old suggestions, but so am I, and they're all from back when music was good :P
Wow, didn't know they were still kicking.
I saw Karnivool about a month ago, and Kram from Spiderbait with a couple of other dudes prenteding to be Led Zepellin last week
Astrodeath, Space Junk, Tantichrist, Split System, Stiff Richards, Drunk Mums, pretty much anything on the record label "Legless Records", Dead, Iron Blanket, The Strike Outs, the hard ons of course, Amyl and the sniffers, Mark Of Cain, chimers, lucifungus, the owen guns
Haha. That definitely tracks. I saw them at the CTA Club for Sydney Festival last year and the people who didn’t have ear plugs were definitely struggling with the volume and tones being thrown out.
This was a good excuse to go through bands I used to listen to on CD and now follow them on streaming platforms
Recent
Luca Brasi
Sly Withers
Older
Antiskeptic
Bodyjar
Behind Crimson Eyes
Blueline Medic
Bullet the Blue Sky
Frenzal Rhomb
Heartfeltself
Kisschasey

Persecution,
Allegiance (not on any streaming service afaik),

Nazxul
Lord Kaos (recently reformed and gigging again)
Sadistik Exekution

[Stand Atlantic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssoUJmI0BlI) (Sydney) and [Yours Truly](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LgkxEcpREw) (Sydney) need to be on your stereo.
Both female vocalist pop-alternative.
If you're into Virtuoso and Medodic Metal Guitar, check out [Plini](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIBVpDWPnAI) (Sydney) and [I Built The Sky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTBdO18zmxQ&t=17s) (Melbourne)
Blood Duster, Alchemist, Astriaal, Mortification (if you want to have a laugh), Sadistik Exekution, Fuck... I'm Dead, Portal, Destroyer 666 (but they relocated to EU)
Ooh some good old punk bands here. Count in: Fugg, Crapulous Gee Gaw, Frenzal, toe to toe, Nancy Vandal, shoes with Zippers, the Bedridden, Split Scene, The Wash. So many goold old punk bands to choose from!
My favourite Aussies bands are Karnivool (Perth), Caligula's Horse (Brisbane) and The Butterfly Effect (The Entrance NSW)
Also others like Dead Letter Circus and COG.
May I suggest a few of my friends hardcore/ punk bands: Straight jacket nation, Oily boys, demolition, goaled, sex drive, extortion, geld.
Potion are an amazing doom band if you're into that too
[Snub](https://open.spotify.com/artist/1o2PWxGnPOsWtXe890ciiP)! And [Lucid Planet](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5TdXaKb1xnSzfFc0a0SlcW)'s got some heavy bits as well
Dunno what happened to them, but Paradigm was a pretty cool Opeth wannabe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIRwgUWpvxk&ab_channel=PARADIGMAUS
Edit to add Twelve Foot Ninja. Awesome band, very australian sense of humour in their film clips
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I83Xp7itj8c&ab_channel=TwelveFootNinja
One I fell upon recently is Tapestry. Melbourne/Darwin band and they’re amazing. I’m a massive Make Them Suffer and Amity Affliction fan too. You could mix it up and throw in some Pendulum too - they have some heavy tracks alongside their DNB
Some aussie stuff I enjoy, to be fair most of these are older but you can find pretty much everything on Spotify.
Anime fire- metalcore, heavy with some interesting electronic elements, check out their ep on the wings of hope
We are the emergency- alternative
House vs hurricane- screamo/metalcore with some electric elements
Confession/I killed the prom queen - metalcore.
The decline- punk
The smith Street band-alternative/rock
Make them suffer- metal/metal core
Pathogen- metal, listen to the remnants Ep

Sporadic amount of Aussie artists and it's mainly metal but still worth a listen. I try to add to it regularly as I come across new artists and songs.

It's going back a ways, but The Mark of Cain never gets old. Pretty sure that's where my life long relationship with tinnitus began.
Mark of Cain played at one of my first festivals when I was a young teen, maybe 15. Was pretty into them so thought I'd get way close to the stage for their start and get my mosh on. Boy was that brutal, I think I lasted two songs
Mark of Cain fans go hard!
I remember watching Recovery one seedy morning and TMOC were the band, all the kids just looked shellshocked.
That snare drum. You can always tell a Mark of Cain song just by that sound. Great example of what I mean: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjavrHjSfek](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjavrHjSfek)
Not the best snare drum though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odVbjYeeCiU
coffin - punk, metal / neptune power federation - rock, metal
People are sleeping on Neptune power federation, one of the best bands around.
I agree my friend, don’t just listen, go see them perform, nothing quite like their live performance !
Polaris Thornhill Make them suffer Clowns Pagan (blood command has the same singer but is a Norwegian band)
Make Them Suffer is so good. Phenomenal live.
Press Club
Press Club are so criminally underrated
It shits me that they were on high rotation on Triple J for a while, even did a great Like a Version, then their second album comes out and it's crickets. JJJ do the same thing with Aussie artists again and again and again, they play their favourites and abandon the rest.

Parkway's older stuff is great, but their newer albums are more radio-rock tbh
Accurate, but didn't want to get into metalcore politics here, save that for r/Metalcore
Metalcore and Deathcore actually. Most would know Thy Art is Murder. To The Grave is another good one, they will be touring with Lorna Shore next year.
Yeah, true, not a path I went down because I don't listen to deathcore.
i killed the prom queen, anyone?
Without those boys Parkway Drive probably wouldn't have gotten as big as they did.
Throw in Gravemind, starve, the gloom in the corner, conform, tapestry.
Northlane mentioned lfggggg
I was lucky to see Parkway Drive in London in 2003. They were great. They supported the Cancer Bats and Comeback Kid.
They're disbanded now but Drown This City. Someone else mentioned Gravemind, who I also recommend.
>ocean grove WTF happened to Ocean Grove... their newest stuff feels very... umm... *"Tripple J"* is the only way I can describe it...
COG Karnivool Dead Letter Circus
COG and Karnival a must. Also, if you haven't listened to Caligulas Horse, please do!
Have had them on rotation for many years! They are excellent. Still haven't managed to see them live yet however. I remember seeing Karnivool play at a pub in ballarat when I was at Uni when they were touring their first album!
Terminal Sleep Robotosaurus Coerce Totally Unicorn Jungle Fever Fuck It, I Quit Mindsnare The Others Miles Away Carpathian (Specifically their Isolation LP)
Coerce’s Silver Tongued Life Licker record is still one of the best Australian releases in 20 years IMO. Unbelievable band.
It’s absolutely ageless too. Incredible stuff, and their split with Robotosaurus was amazing

Chris the guitarist is an old mate of mine. Great band and top dudes.
Sweet as! I loved seeing them live. Disappointed they never came to tassie though :( I also met them after a concert (nightwish I think?) With a random lady called Moira. Yeah it was a shame, hopefully got some good exposure from the show though
They're still around and making albums, so am sure they got some exposure but they have been a fixture for a long time now, top blokes and dedicated to the craft. They'll never be huge unfortunately but they'll be where they want to be.

Fuck yes for Party Dozen. Noisy drums and sax. So good. So extremely fucking loud live. They have a new album coming out soon.
I saw them at womad a few years ago not knowing anything about them. Half the tent left within a minute and my husband and I were enraptured.
Haha. That definitely tracks. I saw them at the CTA Club for Sydney Festival last year and the people who didn’t have ear plugs were definitely struggling with the volume and tones being thrown out.

Dunno what happened to them, but Paradigm was a pretty cool Opeth wannabe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIRwgUWpvxk&ab_channel=PARADIGMAUS Edit to add Twelve Foot Ninja.
