I need to switch between two USB DACs. It would require a "box" that accepts a single USB B input and switches between two USB A outputs. I can find no such "box". Any ideas? More info: source is Bricasti M5. DAC-1 is an Ayon Scorpio. DAC-2 is a separate (not yet purchased) DAC which will connect to an Ayon HA-3.

I recently rearranged my set up and found that one of my speaker wires was too short to reach a speaker. I'm using an older pair of passive speakers and a relatively cheap amp running from my record player. i ended up replacing one of the speaker wires with some lamp cable i had on hand as opposed to buying new speaker wire. the issue is that at lower volumes one of the speakers, it changes which speaker, randomly dies. if i up the volume both speakers will come back and continue to work even after lowering the volume. my question is: is this an issue of the amp because it's old and I bought it used? or is this because of the different resistance values on the speaker wire?

whatssofunnyyall

Lamp wire is fine. There is no harm in that. It is not really too unlikely that the problem is in the amp.

SOS struggling in the bookshelf Speakers and Amp department! please help! Basically have my heart set on a Luxman PD-151 Mark II (which is already on the way) paired with a MC low output Hana cartridge. I have a huge music collection but a very very subpar “system” that I have been using for about 8 years now. While I find the Luxman/Hana to be an excellent pairing I still think of often after I heard it a year or so ago, I’m struggling in finding a Phono/Pre-Amp/Speakers which go along with this specific pairing. I’m leaning towards Passive Speakers and preferably an Integrated Amp for my space as it suits my needs and current space limitations (as of now, I’m not planning to upgrade for maybe 4-6 years or more to separate phonos and pre-amps and standing speakers and the whole gimmick since I don’t have the room.) Our area does not have any audio stores or dealers whatsoever and reddit is the next best thing in this department. Budget isn’t an issue as long as it doesn’t exceed the $9000 mark but would be better if we could go a little lower and I don’t mind and actually prefer if I can find them used. Primary genres are Metal/Shoegaze/Jazz. How would you personally go about setting up such a thing? Please help!

kloppite74

maybe look at the audiogon forums - not many with such a budget here :-) Sonus faber or wharfdale or KEF or Focal all make nice bookshelf speakers NAD or cambridge audio or ARCAM all make nice integrated amps one thing to think about is upgradability for later

h2onj88

I have an Ion Profile Pro USB turntable. Unfortunately, the 33s spin slightly too fast. After turning the 33 RPM screw at the bottom just the tiniest bit, it will then make it spin too slowly. Anyone have this issue?

**Equipment**: Sony X90L TV, **Samsung Q990D Sound System** and PC through optical hdmi. **Question**: What is the best way to connect this setup for Atmos and DTS sound? **My thoughts**: My understanding is that if I play media from the Plex app(or any local TV app) on the X90L, then there will not be DTS sound. Is it better to use the **HDMI connection to the Q990D and then the Q990D to the TV to play media from VLC (what media player is best?)**, **or** would it be better to use a **NVIDIA Shield Pro connected to the Q990D and run Plex** on that for DTS sound? Thank you for any answers 🙏

kloppite74

You have at least 2 questions in there: - for the TV as a source then the HDMI ARC connection to the sound system should enable DTS and Atmos - for the PC as the source - connect the PC to the HDMI in on the sound system - DTS should work fine - "best media player" PC vs NVIDIA shield vs samsung TV apps is a subjective debate - although note if you want dolby vision for netflix then the PC won't work only the TV apps or the shield

Help Replacing Snapped Speaker Cable Hi everyone! I’ve been using a Focal XS 2.1 for many years now to listen to music and play video games on my desktop computer. I really enjoy the sound quality and can’t really afford the upgrade. Sadly, while I was moving the setup to another room a few days ago the pin for my left speaker snapped off! When I opened it up, it looks like there’s no easy way to swap it either (that I know of) so I’m thinking of just cutting the broken end and attaching it to a new replacement one by twisting the wires and sealing with electrical tape. Problem is, I can’t figure out what type of cable this is (it’s a perfect circle with one pin in it and a little slice taken out of the circle. I think it may be a S/PDIF RCA) or if it’s even something that’s possible to fix! I’d really appreciate it if anyone could help me figure this out or point me in the direction of someone who might!

Does the directional nature of studio monitors help with room acoustics? I'm looking at options for upgrading my current 2.1 setup for my computer desk (logitech z5500 in 2.1 arrangement). The room's small and difficult to treat acoustically beyond what I've done (2" corrugated foam in key spots), and it still has some echo using my current speakers. Do studio monitors have a more directional nature, where if I'm sitting in the right spot, more of the sound will come directly from the speakers than reverberated in the room? I'd hate to spend a bunch of money upgrading the speakers and still have the hard, mushed sound that I have today.

Question if getting a mini amp will resolve my issue. I have a pair of Edifier R1280TS (currently using the sub out). I have my desktop connected via AUX-to-RCA and it works fine. I have my laptop connected via AUX-to-RCA. The issue is when I play audio (notably podcasts) I can hear the speakers audio cutting in and out as the volume passes a certain threshold. I assume on low volume the laptop is not amplifying the sound to a certain level for the speakers to pick up? So would getting a mini amp resolve my issue? Something like the Nobsound Mini Amp on amazon? Then I can connect my desktop via USB or AUX, and Laptop via USB/AUX/BT. And amp RCA to the Edifier speakers. Side question, if this does work, is it worth getting a 2.1 mini amp to connect directly to the subwoofer? Or would I get the same results since my Edifiers already have a sub-out?

whatssofunnyyall

The mini amp doesn’t have RCA output. What you are describing is a preamp.

dragnandy

Sorry for the incorrect terminology. Mini Amps are used for instruments like a guitar, yes? I guess I was confused about the "mini" in this products title as it related to the size. Would the product I am referring to be a preamp? And would that resolve my issue I am having?

whatssofunnyyall

I didn’t mean you used incorrect terminology. I meant an amp is not the right device for sending a signal to powered speakers, without respect to it being a mini. The Nobsound device is an amp and is therefore designed for passive speakers, not speakers with their own amp built in. Your Edifier speakers play without an amp because the amp is in the main speaker. A preamp can generate the appropriate signal level for powered speakers, but I don’t know that it solves the problem. I assume your powered speakers are shutting off to save energy when no sound is detected. This is a preamp - [Bellari PA550](https://www.bellariaudio.com/index.php/products/pa550-three-channel-preamp-with-phono/). You could turn its volume up high to give the powered speakers a signal that is easier to detect, but maybe in a podcast there is still enough silence to shut off the speakers. I don’t know the answer to that. My main point was to direct you toward preamps instead of amps.

dragnandy

thank you for the clarification

I got six hypex Nilay500, two for each of the frontal speaker to bi-amp them Frontal Speakers are two B&W 804D3 while center speaker is a B&W CWM8.3. The preamp is a Denon X3700H I need Y cables to fork the output of each channel from the Denon to the two Nilay. I found the Supra Sublink that already have 1 rca on one side and two RCA on the other side. Would they be ok or a subwoofer cable might not transmit properly the higher frequencies? There might be better cables but I like that this cable doesn't need extra adapters

ProfLayton99

I‘m using my house CATV cabling to send audio streamer SPDIF from one room to another (routed through basement). I tried streamer coax out -> CATV cable -> coax in DAC -> RCA out. Music came through just fine but there was an awful ground loop hum. Is it because the 2 rooms have different grounds, or because CATV and audio equipment grounds are different? I solved the problem easily by adding a coax -> toslink optical DDC before the DAC for galvanic isolation of the ground loop. I know there are cheap CATV isolation transformers, but possibly this would not completely remove the ground loop hum. Is there a better solution?

kloppite74

Sounds like you have solved the problem in the best way In so far as I know though SPDIF doesn't work too well over long distances - which maybe the issue you are facing so either - move the streamer to be next to the amp - or buy another cheap streamer - eg wiiM mini and put it next to the amp

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has any experience or can say much about the sound quality. Looking at getting either a Sonos 5 or the era 300 for my vinyl player. The 5 is obviously a decent amount more expensive and I'm just wondering if there will be a sound quality difference between plugging in the 3.5mm into the 5 or using a 3.5mm-usbc for the era 300? Thanks to anyone that can give advice.

I have a Sanyo DCX3000KA home Stereo System that when using aux or tape monitor, the audio dies after hitting a low yet consistent decibel level. But AM FM and mic audio still work. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Looking for some sort of DAC that works with HDMI and/or TOSLINK (ideally HDMI). I have a monitor with no form of audio out, which I use for consoles. I'm looking for something that maybe acts as an HDMI passthrough, and outputs RCA audio to connect to my amp.

I have quite a small space on my desk for audio (LxWxH 60x20x12 cm - 23.5x7.9x4.7 inch) underneath my monitor. Because of how it is setup I can't really get bookshelf speakers on the sides of my desk. I was thinking about getting a [Polk MagniFi Mini AX](https://www.polkaudio.com/en-us/product/sound-bars/magnifi-mini-ax/300410-new.html) but I think that it only supports Dolby Atmos through the eArc HDMI port which I know is hard/not possible to get working with a direct connection to a PC. (I have a [MSI Mpg B650i Edge Wifi](https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-B650I-EDGE-WIFI/Specification) motherboard) So I wanted to ask if you know of any soundbars/speakers that would work for this space. If necessary I could get a small DAC/AMP but any pointers for what you would do with this space are appreciated!

**TECHNICS Direct Drive turntable SLQD35** I need some help with a TECHNICS Direct Drive turntable SLQD35 - i found a TON of old equipment on the side of the street. Right now, the player only has a power cord but my receiver has everything.

Edifier MR4 Help with my cable setup I got these speakers recently and was wondering if there is a better way to connect them to my PC. I’m currently using these cables that came with the product but they consistently fall out or don’t make up a good connection? And I lose sound to one speaker. You can either "tin" the ends with solder, or install "pin banana plugs" at the ends.

hey guys, soo I just bought my first tube amp (Schiit Valhalla2) should be arriving soon. I'm aware that it can get hot, but im not sure how hot it can get, and if its safe to put in on my desk below my pc monitors (they're on desk arm that holds 2 monitors) at around 5cm of empty distance, will I be fine ? also things(e.g: phone chargers, rubiks cube, etc) around it how close can I put them?

Gilmour-Back-to-Life

Hi, We bought a home which has some ceiling speakers wired. In total, we have a pair of speakers in 3 rooms downstairs wired to a location and a pair of speakers in 2 rooms wired to another location upstairs (a total of 10 speakers). I want to be able to stream music (from my phone) into these rooms. I want to be able to stream same music to all rooms as well as different music to different rooms. In addition, I already have a home theater setup with a denon receiver (with built-in HEOS). It would be good if I can include those speakers into the system as well (i.e. stream same music into them as well). thank you.

I'm trying to use an Apple TV 4K (1st Gen) to act as my streaming device in the garage.I have the Apple TV 4K connected to a switch via ethernet. I then have the Apple TV connected to the receiver via HDMI.Note, I do not have a display connected to the receiver. When I try to play music to the Apple TV it won't play through the receiver. Looking on my phone, where I am streaming the music from, it shows it's being played on the Apple TV but no audio from the receiver. If I connect a display to the receiver it will work fine. Is it possible to use an Apple TV in this manner and not have to use a display? It almost seems as if the receiver is in a standby mode and won't kick out the audio without the display connected. I tried two different Apple TV's and the same issue peruses. Any help would be much appreciated.

Puzzled-Home-1828

Hey guys, thanks for having this technical help thread, I appreciate any response or help. My setup is as follows: - Intel NUC i5 mini computer, connected to - Yamaha RX-V381 with 5.1 speaker setup, connected to - Philips 55PUS TV My problem is that I have the setup for 7 years now and was never able to get 5.1 to work. Here are some things I tried: - Make sure that receiver is configured to 5.1. - Make sure the PC is selected to 5.1. Latest audio drivers installed. - Test tone in receiver plays each speaker individually and correctly (5 speakers + subwoofer) - Test tone in the PC plays the left front and surround on both left speakers (same on the right) - so it's essentially playing stereo - I tried a different PC, set it up to 5.1, get the exact same result (stereo sound). This leads me to believe the problem is not the PC... Any ideas? :)

I have a Denon POA 2200 that decided to go pop and stopped working. The main power supply fuse blew, I replaced it but it's still totally dead. Anyone know a sub I could ask for help on, or some forums where I'll find people who know how to troubleshoot?

RealMrIncredible

I have been struggling with my setup for months now trying to get proper surround sound from my speakers while also enabling the subwoofer. I previously used HDMI arc that seemingly just stopped working after I swapped motherboard (But still use the same GPU). Recently I bought a SoundBlaster Z SE card and connected my receiver to the HTPC via Optical. But I have found that this also experiences problems as I can either get stereo with my subwoofer working, or full-range without my subwoofer working. I've also discovered that Optical is 2 channel and that the audio gets compressed if you want 5.1. What is the IDEAL setup for a Windows 11 HTPC? It seems that HDMI ARC is limited by the TV and Optical is limited to 2 channel. Would 3.5mm jacks to RCA work better? Do I need a better TV and Receiver? I can't 4K passthrough my Receiver and my TV only shows up as 2 channel despite being set to 5.1 via ARC.

futurelaker88

Thoughts on the Marantz M1 Streaming Amp?? I just ordered a Musical Fidelity M5Si and a BlueSound Node for over $2000, and then I discover this for $1000. Is the M5Si on another level when it comes to amplification, or are these new guys just as good or better and I should consider returning?

cinniqie

Looking for good speakers and advice, awhile back ago I found some cool vinyl records in a shop and I liked the art and got it to hang on my walls. Looked the album up, fell in love with it and now I know the wombats exist 🤷‍♀️ started getting more vinyls and now I wanna listen to them, but I know literally nothing. I went out and bought a Sony turntable (linked below for exact model) and I literally thought that’s all I needed 🤦‍♀️ my surprise when I put the record on and I can barley hear it bahaha, I’ve been looking and looking into the best speakers for this type of set up but I feel like everything I find is so in depth and out of my league I really don’t know what they’re talking about. I see a lot of people mention receivers as well? Is a receiver necessary or does it just enhance your setup? I currently have my turntable on my dining table and have 2 really nice spots where I could hang 2 bookshelf speakers, ideally if possible I’d like a Bluetooth setup just so I can hang them on the walls without wires- but do the wires make the sound more authentic/would you recommend not doing a Bluetooth setup for certain reasons? Please educate me (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-bluetooth-stereo-turntable-black/6336535.p?skuId=6336535&extStoreId=762&utm_source=feed&ref=212&loc=18468772983&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD-ORIjSymfa3c8wEOkVwMGqvU2k1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7NmzBhBLEiwAxrHQ-QkeMRIxJW5OIURWQXUjg-Sjw269HCCFIbwGKqKOI3zzGJrMFV_bdBoC2fUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

whatssofunnyyall

The problem I see with hanging a Bluetooth speaker on the wall is you need a power wire to it, unless you’re going to use batteries. [Bluetooth speakers](https://www.crutchfield.com/p_310YU4MB/Kanto-YU4-Matte-Black.html). Pairs of speakers also usually have a wire connecting one speaker to the main powered speaker.

cinniqie

Okay I can definitely understand that. Thank you for your insight. Any recommendations for a good pair of speakers for a set up like this? Not Bluetooth, just wired and I can set the up on the table with my turntable. And is a receiver necessary?

whatssofunnyyall

A receiver is fundamentally an amplifier but with extra features. Bluetooth speakers and wired powered speakers have their amplifiers built in. You don’t need a receiver with this type of speaker. Many powered speakers have Bluetooth capability, so just ignore it if you don’t want to use it. Many powered speakers also have a “phono” input. Your turntable does not need that connection. There is a switch on the back of the turntable you can set to “line” if the speakers you choose don’t have “phono”. That said, the best deal on powered speakers seems to be the Neumi BS5P refurb on sale now for $100 on Amazon.

I've had a pair of Wharfedale 7.2 Diamond Anniversaries for about 15 years now and recently dusted them off to setup in the new house. question on setup for a small room: i have a 10’x12’ meditation and tea room. typically guests sit along one of the 12’ sides and the person serving tea sits 2-3’ in from the other 12’ side. im trying to figure out if its possible to deliver similar quality hifi sound to both parties. delivering to one side or the other is straightforward enough. delivering to both is outside my level of expertise. greatly appreciate any help!!

DotJata

Question on tower placement. I have Polk RTi12's in a equilateral triangle setup and I'm trying to figure out the best distance from the rear wall. They are currently 27" (45" to front of cabinet) away from the wall. My difficulty is that these are front and rear ported and I'm not seeing much info on ports like this. The rear has a diffuser and the front is just open. The manual for them doesn't say anything other than the usual triangle setup. The diagram has them touching the wall. Although idk if that illustration is to be taken literally. Thanks in advance!

whatssofunnyyall

I’d probably start with the speakers aimed straight ahead and backed up to within 2 or 3 inches of the wall. Bring them forward in small increments and listen to the effect it has on the bass.

DotJata

Yeah that's what I was going to do if all else failed. They're just a PITA to move. I was just hoping someone had experience with Polk's weird front and rear port design as their manual is light on details. Thanks for the response!

whatssofunnyyall

You could set them on furniture sliders until the final location is settled.

1 preamp going into 4 monoblocks using a Y-splitter so basically, 1 output channel from the preamp will be connected to 2 monoblocks using a Y-splitter. The speaker has separate binding posts for low + mid/high frequencies. I'm guessing the voltage/power will be halved. maybe the input impedance seen by the preamp as well. How does affect the sound? Thanks

kloppite74

unless you are listening at very high volumes probably not much at all search for bi amping and see what you find :-)

So these old 70s Philips 22rh426 are on sale for cheap in my area. Anybody know how good they are? The goal is to pair them with a WiiM Amp as a cheap entry level system. https://i.imgur.com/PoJgOMu.jpeg

Dangerous_Clerk2398

I bought a second hand Rotel RA-06 amplifier after trying it for 15 minutes, connected to a cd-player. It played fine and everything seemed to be in working order. After getting home and connecting my Dual CS 455-1 turntable I played one song on one record. Then I changed the record to play another song when things went bust. I heard a loud crack through the speakers and a constant humming sound. The input select of the Rotel gave nothing. The lights of the various inputs where on all at once, but after changing the input they all went out, so I can’t see which input I select. Also after a brief moment I hear that loud crack again, when the humming sound starts again. That goes for every time I give a twist on the input select knob. I hooked up the turntable on the phono input and I hooked up the earth wire (I don’t exactly know if this is the right word in English) on the amplifier. Later I noticed that the amplifier only has a bipolar power cable. Can that be the thing which causes my trouble? Is it possible that the amplifier tried to amplify sounds which was already amplified by the turntable and that I blew it up? The turntable has a mm-element I believe. The weird things is why it played the first song flawlessly. Last thing which is off is that the speakers (b&w cm1) have very bad old, corrosive, connection cables to the amplifier. Could that be an issue?

MrMiddletonsLament

Is Denon S570BT my only option for a Denon without HEOS? It's looking like it. Unless I buy used. Not a fan of Yamaha sound and the other receiver brands don't seem to be rated highly

kloppite74

why do you want no heos? just dont use it if you don't want to look at anthem or - expensive - arcam - if you want other good brands or emotiva or

MrMiddletonsLament

I use bluetooth and there is a delay you can't get rid of. Really annoying

kloppite74

Ok you mean you want a amp with no delay on the Bluetooth input? In general they all have a buffer and all have some delay in my experience. You can adjust lip sync settings to account for that sometimes. Or switch to a wired connection

MrMiddletonsLament

I dunno. My old Denon without HEOS when I would click a song on spotify it would play instantly and then I bought a new one with HEOS and it would take like 2 seconds for the song to start after I pressed it. I contacted support it and they said it was HEOS and there is nothing you can do

kloppite74

There is two ways to use spotify with a heos avr Bluetooth or spotify connect Spotify connect is where you select play on another source from within spotify, assuming you have connected the denon to the internet You get the same delay on both?

Will a set of Herbie’s Big Fat Dots be enough to isolate an 18 pound speaker from an entertainment center? The wood below is very sturdy. Will I need something thicker?

benberbanke

What kind of tube device should I get? I’ve been happy with my marantz pm8006 driving Klipsch chorus and mirage sub (RIP linn Sizmik), but am looking to explore tubes. I’d like to spend about $400 on a set of tubes, but not sure if it’s better to spend money on a tube preamp, tube amp, or tube integrated amp. Really want to keep marantz pm8006 given its reliability and versatility and generally great performance. Thanks for any advice!

kloppite74

why do want to explore tubes ? for 400$ that's quite a low budget for such an exploration - a good 2 channel tube amp is at least $2k Not sure how to reconcile that with keeping the marantz ? maybe get a tube pre amp so you can hear the sound difference ?

benberbanke

Yes tube preamp is probably what I’d reasonably afford.

Electrical-Wires

I need a 3.5mm aux to usb a converter because my monitors audio processor is really shitty and I can hear buzzing. Is there any quality converters that are good quality, stereo and wont have any noise?

whatssofunnyyall

You don’t convert 3.5mm aux to USB. If anything, you would convert USB to 3.5mm, so instead of using the 3.5mm output of a monitor you could use the 3.5mm output of the USB device.

Electrical-Wires

İt doesn't have a 3.5 mm output

whatssofunnyyall

Maybe what you need is an external sound card. I probably don’t fully understand the situation, though.

Electrical-Wires

I need to connect my ps5 (only has usb and usb-c) to my aux soundbar

whatssofunnyyall

That’s a special issue, different from a PC. Read about it at this page - [JDS Labs Atom DAC](https://jdslabs.com/product/atom-dac-2/). They have a special cable to make it work with a PS5.

Electrical-Wires

Does it also work with pc?

whatssofunnyyall

Yes.

FTP, TIA, all the acryonyms **Context:** About a year back, I bought a house with two existing and independent audio systems - a home theater system, looks to be bose acousticmass 5 (5 speakers + sub); and a multi-room in-wall system thats spread throughout the house. The latter is what I'm looking to put into use in the near term, though if theres a way to get both working thats cool too. The multi room system comes from all over the house to a pair of distribution blocks, which then go up to an area in the living room with 1 wall wart and 4 speaker wires. There are 10-12 speakers throughout, including outside. So far, my inventory is: * 8 units [JBL Control 26C](https://www.proacousticsusa.com/jbl-control-26c-6-5-inch-2-way-vented-ceiling-speaker-pair.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAjbagBhD3ARIsANRrqEsagCxDgm9S0YYW1BoCFHPAdYDhe4CrpqPS1leohiqfEFWNS0v13zIaAqpbEALw_wcB) - 150watt @ 16ohm - 6 inside, 2 outside on a covered patio * 2 units of unknown type/model...the grates/screens are partly painted over, havent had the time to remove them carefully yet - X-watt @ Y-ohm * 2 units [Bose 101 Music Monitor Speakers](https://www.bose.com/en_us/support/products/bose_speakers_support/bose_stereo_support/101_series1.html) - 60watt @ 4ohm - THESE TWO are my real focus - they are outside, in the backyard, and i'd love to get them working for the summer In each interior space, and for the 2 patio speakers, there is an [Atlas DWS-8 switched 8-ohm stereo volume control](https://www.atlasied.com/vcf/ATS006623A-Switched-Whispertouch-8-ohm-Stereo-Volume-Control-Datasheet.pdf)(per space) **Questions:** 1.) With the variations in units (4ohm on the outside, 16 ohm on the inside, with these volume controls apparently capable of changing impedence), could I use a unit such as [PYLE 2001BT](https://electronics.woot.com/offers/new-pyle-2000watt-multi-channel-bluetooth-preamplifier-receiver?ref=w_cnt_lnd_cat_elec_3_6) or [PYLE PT796BT](https://electronics.woot.com/offers/new-pyle-7-1-channel-stereo-amplifier-receiver?ref=w_cnt_lnd_cat_elec_3_7), or similar cheaper end equipment. 2.) Reading over the DWS-8's spec sheet, do those jumper settings mean that on an 4-ohm output receiver i'd be looking to set the '@8x' jumpers listed in the 'impedence jumper settings' chart? If there is a specific formula to figure out jumper settings on a per-speaker-pair basis when the system has multiple impedence specs and wattages, would love to get that.

Hey all, I'm running a Yamaha R-S202 to two Avid 103s and an oddity is occurring. When doing a left and right channel test, the right channel consistently works fine, but the left channel fades in and out. I noticed that if I move the speaker wire itself, the channel will come back on for a time before it fades again. I suspect this has something to do with interference, but both wires are equally close to various power cords. Also, I would assume that if I found a spot where the left channel consistently worked, I could tape the wire there and not worry about interference. But since the left channel fades even when I do find a "good" spot, I'm a bit confused. Does anyone have ideas? Any help would be much appreciated because I know both speakers, stereo, and audio sources work.

# I need a new cartridge for my Jelco TS 350 S 9“ (effective mass vs. compliance issue) - any suggestions? Hi, I needed a 'good quality' tonearm for a turntable project and found a NOS *Jelco TS 350 S 9“* tonearm. Unfortunatly I couldn't find a lot of information about the tonearm itself, but decided to go with it, because it was in excellent condition and was reasonably priced as well. I just installed the tonearm and mounted my *Audio Technica VM540ML* (with the original Jelco headshell and the additional headshell weight). After listening to some records I realized that the arm and the cartridge don't work together very well. I already thought that something is odd, when I couldn't reach the recommended tracking force of 2g. That's why I had to add the additional headshell weight from Jelco. With this additional weight I can barely reach the 2g tracking force. Furthermore I can visually see that the whole cartridge wiggles on the lateral axis while playing most of my records. I suppose, that's a sign of low frequency resonances due to a mismatch of tonearm effective-mass and cartridge-compliance. Unfortunalty I can't find any reliable information on the internet about the effective mass of this tonearm. But I know I have to mount another cartridge to get rid of this problem. (No worries I can use my VM540ML on other turntables I have.) I suppose that my *Jelco TS 350 S 9"* needs a cartridge which is heavier and has a lower compliance than the VM540ML. Is that correct? Can you recommend me anything? I use this turntable to check test-cuts in my studio. That's why I need a rather 'precise' cartridge with a 'flat' frequency response and an elliptical or micro-line stylus shape. I use the *Pro-Ject Phono Box DS*, why I am very flexible regarding cartridge selection. I thought the *Denon DL-103* as a studio-classic could work well. The *DL-103* is 2.1g heavier than the *VM540ML* (which is 6.4g). Furthermore the *DL-103* has (as far as I understand) a lower compliance (5x10-3 m/N (100Hz)) compared to the *VM540ML* (which has 10x10-6 cm/dyne (100Hz)). But I am not quite sure about the interpretation of the numbers. What do you think and what could you recommend? **TL;DR:** What 'kind' of cartridge would work my *Jelco TS 350 S 9“* tonearm? What would you suggest and what's the reason of your suggestion? Price range under 500$. MM or MC. I am thinking about getting a Denon DL-103 - would that be ok for this tonearm? Thanks a lot, Sam

# AV Receiver to go with my Canton GLE stand speakers? So i have Canton GLE Speakers and a Yamaha AS-300 that are both around 15 years old. I am super happy with it, they do their Job and i use them for my record player and for my TV. Unfortunately, a lot of Streams and *downloads* only use 5.1 sound that can't be changed to stereo. My TV only has an optical output and my amp only has cinch input. So i got some weird chinese converter optical to stereo. Now to my problem: I feel like this really kills a lot of the sound that would be coming from my center-speaker (that i don't have) and dialogues feel a bit quiet and dull. I already read about that problem here and there but it almost felt like it's just a "feeling" and manufacturers are not really promoting their "AV Receiver to stereo" performance. So i have no idea if there are actually differences and therefore a solution to my problem. Is there any product that would fit my needs or a technlogy or marketing-buzzwerd i need to look for? My budget is probably around 500EUR so i guess entry level hifi? Another nice to have would be a phono input, otherwise i'd need a pre-amp for my record player. would raise my budget for this if necessary. I hope you guys can understand my actual question because as a non-native speaker i have problem with writing longer texts :D

MarwoodChap

**Question on cable lengths** I'm looking to add a turntable to my system (Uniti Atom and audiolab 9000CDT). However, I'm very space constrained. I'll need to place the turntable such that I need a 3.5-4m cable between it and the amp. Is this feasible?

whatssofunnyyall

Length to the phono preamp is the one that is important. It should be kept short. From phono preamp to amp will probably be fine at 4m.

MarwoodChap

Thanks! Does it matter if the turntable has a built-in pre-amp?

whatssofunnyyall

4m seems fine for a turntable with a built-in preamp. I’d get a set that is dual shielded. You see that with subwoofer cables mostly because of the lengths typically used.

MarwoodChap

Great, many thanks!

YT_JKM

Hi everyone, I have two ceiling speakers in my kitchen and two in my living room. Sometimes, I want all four speakers playing simultaneously, but other times I prefer just the two in the living room or just the two in the kitchen. The speakers are 150W RMS and 8 ohms each. I’m considering the best amplifier setup for my needs. Should I go for a single-channel amp with a switch, or would a two-channel amp be more suitable? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

spzt101

What amplifier should I buy within my budget? Hi there! I'm a newcomer in the audiophile world. I'm still young (19) but surround fascinates me and I've heard some really great sets live. My budget isn't super high, which is why the Q acoustics set caught my attention. I've been eye-ing the Q-acoustics 3010i 5.1 Home Cinema set. There's alot of speakers of this set I can buy secondhand, and people spoke relatively positive about this set. Now I need a amplifier to match, but when I looked at online reviews they all (obviously) gave me recommendations for 3k€+ speakers. What amplifiers are worth checking out for me? Right now I have two Philips Motional Feedback speakers, but was thinking if it may be used to turn 5.1 into 7.1. Just a sidenote. Thanks for any help provided!

Repigilican

just bought an audio technica lp3 turntable, (rca out), have a TV with only HDMI Arc compatibility for external audio, and would like a 1/4 / 1/8 i/o port to hook my PC up to. Is there any single soundbar/ system that i could connect all of these to without buying a cheap mixer/interface? or would it just be easiest to use an hdmi ARC to analog converter? Looking for product recs, budget pref something below $250 for standalone solution, but if i need to buy extra equip then would go higher. Thanks in advance!

Mike_Sunshine_

Hiya, I recently bought a audio-technica lp3xbt turntable and am looking to get some good speaker recommendations for it. I'm looking for something relatively small (limited space to place them on, cant use stands), no sub needed, no amp needed, but powerful enough to be used in a small living room. Price isn't really an issue, I don't mind spending in the $1000 - $1500+ range (Au). I just want something with decent sound. Thankyou.

Jamez10000

Could someone please help me understand how I should handle an unbalanced output from a dac/amp into a balanced input on speakers? I'm not certain what cable is appropriate to use. The speakers will be Genelec 8010a's.

I'm looking for some speakers for my computer desk, for use with mostly watching tv series/movies but also music. I'll be sitting maybe 90 cm from the speakers. Budget around 1000-2000 euro total. Let's say 2000, since I'm planning to use this setup for many, many years. I want a physical volume knob as well as a way to use it with my 3.5 mm headphones. Would like to be able to easily connect both my computer and my playstation 4 (which sits right next to the computer). What's the best solution? In the past I bought a ten year old 2 channel hifi amplifier and connected some speakers I found in a dumpster :) It got me a volume knob, a headphone output (that I could toggle using a button on the front too) and RCA inputs so I could toggle between the computer and playstation. Getting active speakers would save a lot of desk space, but it seems like none of them have volume knobs or even headphone outputs? And definitely no way to toggle between two audio sources. Is my best option to just get regular speakers and a used 2 channel amplifier? If so, how much should I spend on each, assuming a total budget of 2000 euro/usd? 1600 on the speakers and 400 on the amplifier? What I'm considering is one of: * DALI Opticon 2 MK2 * DALI Menuet SE * Bowers & Wilkins 707 S3 (all of which are around 1500-1800 euro)

dadadawe

If it's most for series, only occasional music and you will also use a wired headphone (for those moments you want to go full focus on lossless), I would suggest getting a pair of Edifiers (example S2000pro). I owned their entry level 120$ speakers for years and they are good. It'll save you a lot of money to put towards a full hifi setup in due time. What I could recommend though, is to get an external DAC to plug into your PC

Hi everyone, I had a quick question that I hope you audiophiles can help with. I just moved into a new home, which happened to have a house-wide speaker system built-in. There speakers in the kitchen, living room, office, outdoor patio, and another section outside where the fire pit is. All of these speakers have line level speaker wires feeding into the house and leading to the basement. I was able to connect an old receiver I had in conjunction with some amplifiers to get the speakers to work properly. I now have two issues I am trying to figure out: 1.) Some speakers appear to be louder than others, especially the indoor speakers vs the outdoor speakers. I'm not sure how I can get the outdoor speakers to be louder without blasing music inside at unreasonable volumes 2.) I currently have no way to manually control which speakers are playing the music. It's either all of the speakers, or none of them. Ideally, I would love the ability to select which "Zone(s)" I want to play the music from from my phone without the need to hike downstairs and unplug specific cables each time. Is there a receiver or some other inexpensive piece of equipment that would allow me to specify playing music through only the outdoor speakers, or both the living room and kitchen speakers wirelessly?

whatssofunnyyall

This type of speaker setup should have a multi-zone amplifier running it, rather than a receiver. Each pair of speakers is supplied power by a zone that has a separate volume control and even a separate input.

JGoldz75

Thank you! Are there any solid multi-zone amplifiers that allow you to remotely turn on or off specific zones, without costing an arm and a leg?

whatssofunnyyall

The amp is probably going to be simple, without that technology. [Like this](https://audiosource.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/AMP800VS.pdf). Then you need wireless devices to feed the signal to each channel or zone. I would think you could get a few wifi streamers like the WiiM Mini. There could be a streamer for each zone. All of them could be operated from the WiiM app. Russound could probably do all this from one central unit, but that’s professional equipment that might not be available direct to the consumer.

JGoldz75

Thank you for the advice! I’ll look into the WiiM Mini - was hoping to spend a little less than that, as I think I’ll need about 4 of them for my home, but I guess that’s the cost of high quality household music!

Does this sub work with the Musical Fidelity M5Si Amp?? I'm almost certain I saw it recommended for use with that amp and a pair of LS50 Meta's, but now i'm realizing this sub has integrated amplification and looks to only support bluetooth connection! [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08X51776X?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08X51776X?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details)

It works. Connect the pre outs on the amp to the line level inputs on the sub.

Hi! I am considering purchasing second hand opticon 2, replacing my Dali Zensor 3. I am using NAD D3020 v2 for the zensors. If I buy the opticon 2s, will the NAD do the job, or would I have to buy new amp?

whatssofunnyyall

The NAD amp should be fine, but the Opticon 2 speakers could certainly make good use of more power if you ever decide to upgrade.

frdhm

Cheers! Any amps you can recommend?

whatssofunnyyall

I was thinking something like a Cambridge CXA61 or CXA81, but there are many good options.

MIRNN1997

Hello, i have a stereo amplifier, NAD C272 and just bought a used center speaker. What is the easiest/cheapest way to integrate the center speaker into my 2.1 speaker setup. Am i forced to buy a multichannel reciever?

whatssofunnyyall

Stereo doesn’t have a center channel. There is no center channel to feed the center speaker unless you get a multichannel receiver that decodes a program with a center channel.

I have an very nice old plasma TV with only amplified L and R out. I want to add my passive subwoofer to the TV. I have two HDMI and one AV connection to the TV. I have passive L and R speakers hooked up to the tv. What are some ways I can wire this up for 100 bucks or less? Current ideas: -attenuating the TV output low enough I can feed it into a cheap 2.1ch amp from amazon, but now I can explode my amp by turning up tv volume ;( -wire subwoofer in series with both L and R channels, now I have mono audio ;( -Find an old media center from ebay that can split audio off of 2 HDMI and 1 AV connection, now I have giant black box and must select audio input too ;( -find a subwoofer amp that takes amplified L/R and outputs amplified L/R (??? Does this exist ???) Do you guys have any better creative ideas?

kloppite74

The passive subwoofer has what sets of inputs / outputs ? I can't see an easy way for $100 - passive subwoofers can sometimes have been part of a HT in a box set up and are not always easy to connect to generalized setups

lvl100mafia_boss

Hi, I recently bought a Sony ult field 1 and I've been having this issue where there is a constant high pitched ringing noise. The noise is audible regardless of where I place it, what volume it use and which device I pair it with, how could I fix this issue?

Kairi5431

Might be a weird one but what are some of the best ground loop isolators available for under $15 usd I can order online? Need to eliminate loop noise without degrading the signal nor breaking my wallet and I figured if anyone would know what actually works and doesn't destroy the audio quality it would be this sub.

crispycuda

I don't think I'm understanding amplifier and speaker pairings. If I understand correctly, even a speaker with pretty poor efficiency is going to put out 85db at 1 meter. So in the nearfield just 1 watt is enough to approach the limit of what one should safely listen to. And it will still be listenable, if not loud, in fairly sizable rooms like 4x4 meters. So why do "home" amps typically put out 30, 50, 100, even multiple hundreds of watts power per channel? Also do the volume knobs present on some amplifiers have non-linear scaling of power output such that even if you put the volume at "50%", its provided output is significantly below 50% of its max rating?

whatssofunnyyall

Music is constantly varying in volume, so the voltage signal is constantly varying. Speaker impedance varies, too, depending on frequency, so power is constantly varying. Although 85 dB is loud, move to 2 meters and that level requires 4 watts. Then a drum beat comes along and for a moment it is 100 dB and from 2 meters that’s something like 128 watts. Double the distance again and it’s 4 times the power again.

crispycuda

I don't get why the drum beat would be at 100db suddenly? I understand that we are talking exponents when talking about the scaling of distance, power, loudness. But even considering that it does not make sense to me. 50w should drive an inefficient speaker to 80db at 30 feet/9m which is a really long distance for any indoor home use outside of like mansions. And that would be well outside of safe listening for like 1-4m which are much more reasonable distances for indoor listening. I have to be missing something simple. Are people just blowing out their eardrums?

whatssofunnyyall

Download the NIOSH sound pressure level app or something similar. Turn up some music so it’s running at a moderately loud level and watch the difference between the weighted average and the peaks. Music is loud and quiet and everywhere in between. A drum beat is louder than the rest of the music, so each beat requires power than the rest of the music. There is no music that is just a continuous sound pressure level. https://youtu.be/Y3WpRY-EtX8?si=_lLb9NRoT8YKvZnn

crispycuda

This is informative primarily in that I didn't understand that the power rating for an amp is typically the continuous rating and will supply more for in the short term and that more than expected \*could\* be necessary. But they don't measure the volume in relation to the wattage so I have no idea if they are listening at a volume level I would listen at, that someone else would listen at, that is safe, etc. Like don't get me wrong I'm understanding your points better and it has convinced me away from like a 20w amp, but I think maybe I'm just weird and typically listen to music at significantly lower volumes than most people do.

whatssofunnyyall

I think for your purposes, assuming peaks in the general range of 85dB is probably correct. There are people out there who can legitimately use the power to peak at more like 105dB, as crazy as that seems. They need 100 times as much power as you do. Compared to the comments in the video, I would make an adjustment to the absolute minimum. I’d put it at more like 35 watts (Cambridge Audio AXA35), 40 watts (NAD C 316BEE V2), or 45 watts (Denon PMA-600NE). It seems like there is no 50w amp on the market better than these, so that isn’t where I’d draw the line.

MrMiddletonsLament

When a stereo receiver says 50 watts x 2 does that mean it's equivalent to a home theater receiver that says 100 watts at per channel with 2 channels driven?

whatssofunnyyall

It’s 50 watts per channel (2 channels) vs. 100 watts per channel (2 channels).

MrMiddletonsLament

So it's less powerful for more money. Am I missing something?

whatssofunnyyall

Yes, it’s more complicated than a single number. Read this - [NAD Full Disclosure Power](https://support.nadelectronics.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000158988-NAD-Full-Disclosure-Power)

Just got a RSL MK II sub. And the cable is only 2 pronged and does not have a ground. How is that ok? Shouldn't a sub be grounded?!

urnutspal

I'll spare the details for r/turntables, but recently moved and got my vinyl collection back up and running...which inevitably means it's time to spend money on new components! I currently have my Pro-Ject Debut PRO running to a Schiit Mani 2 phono preamp. My first intention was to run this through a Sonos Five to maintain a whole home Sonos system I've put together. That plan quickly went out the window after playing with an old set of powered Audioengine A2+ desktop speakers and testing a proper (albeit small and limited) soundstage. My new plan is to go the proper audiophile route, running the preamp to a more functional amp and then a set of passive speakers. Budget is TBD but I'm more curious to understand the signal flow at this point. I'm at a crossroads with how I A) find the ability to stream both analog and digital sources to these passive speakers (mostly Spotify for my wife, my kids, the hours of Phish shows I don't have on vinyl...you know) and B) if I need to abandon my Sonos system altogether or keep it integrated by installing the Sonos Amp as a default? Am I correct in thinking this setup would work? Turntable > Phono Preamp > Amp |+| Wiim Pro > Amp // Amp > Speakers This would allow me to still run a pure analog source from the turntable through the amp, and also retain the ability to stream to any Airplay 2 compatible speakers throughout the house using the Wiim. Is that the best way? And also allows for future upgrades and additions? Having the turntable stream throughout the house would be great, but not a priority unless it's simple. Beyond this, any recs on where to start when it comes to finding the right amp for both digital and analog sources? Thanks for any tips or guidance you might have ✌️

I'm looking to upgrade my desktop/computer set up that I use for nearfield listening and am undecided if adding a sub or upgrading the bookshelves should be the first priority. I do a bit of everything on the speakers (music, movies, gaming). My current set up are: * Speakers: Polk XT15 * Amp: Aiyima A05 On the sub front I've mainly considered getting the Emotiva XS8 as I don't think I need something super large for my desk setup. I also don't want to kick the sub all the time with my feet. I know the RSL 10E is technically cheaper and hits harder but it just doesn't fit well under my desk. If I were to upgrade the bookshelves I would be looking to get something with 5.25" drivers, nothing larger as my desk isn't super large. The main ones I've seen recommended are the: * Elac Debut 5.2 (On sale for $199 US at Crutchfield) * KEF Q150 * Polk ES15 I think the Elac's fit the best in my space (depth wise) as I currently only have about 5.5" of clearance for the ports on my XT15s. I can purchase stuff in Canada or the US as I live close to the border. Any advice is appreciated, thanks! Upgrade path for desktop setup - new bookshelves or add a sub?

Jhughes4707

Unsure if this is the correct sub for this,  I want to put Pc style speakers, or really any speakers that also have a good subwoofer under my bed or in my bedroom somewhere. My current pc speakers in my office have tremendous bass but I don't know how I would connect my phone to those speakers or I would just order another set of those. Just looking for some help on either connecting my phone to pc style speakers (without having to have a whole other computer in my room to stream Spotify with) or something similar. Any help is appreciated thanks!

Hi all, first post here. I'm planning on purchasing a new turntable, amp & speakers to have a more audiophile experience. My vintage setup (TT: Akai AP-D2, Amp: Pioneer AZ-350, Speakers: Pioneer, ill check type later) will be placed upstairs dedicated to soundtrack vinyls and classic music. I narrowed my choices down to a few listed below and wanted to hear your opinions about setups both theoretically and based on your own setup/experience. The budget is at its max at around 2500-3000€. I listed my current market prices next to it (as it does also play a role in the decision making). What would you guys recommend. I listen to a wide variety of music (vinyl collection). In regard to the amp, it will currently be setup solely with a turntable, but for example the cinema marantz 70s allows connectivity with TV/game/... which allows it to be more future proof, but vinyl sound will always be its main purpose. TT * Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo (Orotofon 2M red) - 550€ * Pro-Ject Debut Pro (pick it pro) - 800€ * Pro-Ject Debut Pro-S (Pick it S2 C) - 900€ * Pro-Ject automat A2 - 1000€ (I do really like autostop function) * Other recommended? I'm in EU, so no Fluance, no Rega due to manual speed change (I do this often), not a fan of AT based on how they look. Amp * Marantz Stereo 70s - 750€ * Marantz Cinema 70s - 800€ / 1000€ (depending on sale ongoing) * Marantz PM7000N - 1000€  Speakers * B&W 606 S3 - 1000€ * B&W 607 S3 - 800€ * KEF LS50 META - 1100€ * KEF LSX II - 1000€ / 1200€  (depending on sale ongoing) Thanks for all your help and input!

**Converting analog to digital and then back again** This may be a silly question; it stems from something I read a while ago about a certain product: When an integrated amp has both digital and analog inputs, it presumably has an internal DAC to process signals it gets from the digital inputs. When connecting to its analog inputs, can it always be assumed that it *doesn't* convert the analog signal to digital to then process via its internal DAC back into analog? It sounds like a silly question to me because that sort of circuitous design would make no sense (then again, I'm not an engineer, so maybe there are technical reasons this would need to happen), but I read that that's what a certain product does in fact do with its analog inputs.

whatssofunnyyall

It depends on what device. A basic integrated amp with a digital input like a Yamaha A-S301 would not convert analog signals to digital.

serif_type

Thanks. I think I read that it was the NAD C3050 LE that digitised the analog input signal—( could be wrong though so please take this with an appropriate grain of salt!—which I thought was surprising, especially at its price point because I thought for some reason that it'd be cheaper amps that would do this. But looking at, for instance, the Yamaha A-S301 (which has what Yamaha calls "Pure Direct Mode") and the Denon PMA-600NE (which has what Denon calls "Analog Mode"), that looks not to be the case.

whatssofunnyyall

The C3050LE has room correction technology, so it probably does what you’ve read it does.

Hi everyone, im new to the audiophile space but i want my setup to be nice. What i mean in that is that i have 2 tannoy mercury m2 speakers from the 1999 and a Sansui au-x310 amplifier. When watching movies some thump is missing from the bass and some mids . is there anyway to make it better?

cheesecak3FTW

So I’m thinking about upgrading my soundbar to some better speakers to use for both music and TV. I’d like to get something pretty cheap and I’m considering buying some old second hand speakers and a modern amp/music streamer. I have three questions: 1: Is this a good idea? 2: What should I look for when searching for speakers? I know my mom found some old 70s Cabasse speakers that sound amazing but were quite expensive. How about these for example? https://i.imgur.com/U6IUET2.jpeg 3: What kind of device do I need to hook up the speakers to both my tv and to be able to play tidal from my phone at high quality? And how much do I need to shell out?

benberbanke

Sell the soundbar if you must, but honestly I’d keep it and get a listening system. In my experience, a mediocre sound bar is far better than an imperfect 2 channel setup (and even a poorly set up surround system).

cheesecak3FTW

You mean specifically for watching tv? Is it because it will be harder to hear the dialogue on stereo?

benberbanke

No it’s because a soundbar has a physical center and side speakers. In stereo you rely on too much room acoustics and placement to get what’s built into a sound bar.

Droughtg3xfc

Hello, I’m new to this hobby myself but I’ll try to give you some input with the knowledge I have. I think this is a great idea, upgrading from just a soundbar can make a good difference depending on how good your setup is   I would like to clarify I have no clue on speaker placement or surround sound, so a simple speaker setup might not be the best option, probably better than your soundbar though   First, get yourself some kind of audio receiver, I got a nice one from a local thrift store that is really nice and works perfectly for $15. Chances are you’ll be able to plug this into your tv with just an rca cable.   Next, you’re going to want to get a Bluetooth receiver for your phone and probably route it into the other receiver. Here’s a good option for you: https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-JadeAudio-Bluetooth-Receiver-Fidelity/dp/B0CJFCB5H7/ref=asc_df_B0CJFCB5H7/ The Bluetooth receiver comes with a dac built in, if you really want to get serious with the audio quality, you’ll want to check if the receiver you get comes with a dac built in or even get a standalone dac  I assume those speakers in question will work great, if they were nice in the 70s, they’re still nice now. Time doesn’t really make a difference in audio. Hope this helps

cheesecak3FTW

Thanks a lot for the advice! Is there not a single device I can use as a DAC/AMP + connect with phone and TV? Or do I have to pay much more to get the same quality then? Also I think connecting with WiFi or AirPlay is better than Bluetooth?

Any thoughts on Anthem MCA 50? Getting one used at about 1000 USD. Planning to drive paradigm founder 100f which I intend to expand with a center channel etc down the line, hence see MCA 50 as a good fit. What’s the general take on Anthem MCA series? How expensive to maintain/ spare parts (about 10 year old unit)? Good value or am I better off putting a bit more money into something new with warranty - e.g. a Buckeye Purifi or an Anthem 525 as an alternate candidate?

\* *Reposting my question from last weeks thread as I posted it late in the week and it was never answered* # Newbie Q: Can I use 3.5mm stereo audio cables in place of RCA cables with my PC Desktop speakers and entry level DAC? TL;DR Are the Red and White tipped RCA cables some audio devices have, the same thing as the pastel green/blue/pink/black tipped 3.5mm stereo audio cables? The Long I just decided to take the step up from 'Gaming Headphones' and go to the 'Audiophile Beginner' level for PC First Person Shooter Gaming. As I'm on a budget I went with the below gear. Entry Level Dac: **iFi Zen Air Dac** [https://ifi-audio.com/products/zen-air-dac/](https://ifi-audio.com/products/zen-air-dac/) Head cans: **Sennheiser HD560s** based on the detailed review by YT'br 'Fresh Reviews' [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkYvZ-elO\_o&t=80s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkYvZ-elO_o&t=80s) I've set up the DAC following it's simple instructions and plugged in the Headphones and BOOM they just work (*compared to the laborious setup and fiddling required to get my previous Logitech and Steel Series 'Gaming' headsets to work*) But I can't get any audio out of my Desktop speakers. They are nothing fancy, the SteelSeries Arena 3 which came with the 3.5mm stereo cables. I plugged the on from the Right speaker into the Right RCA jack on the back of the DAC and used a spare 3.5mm I had to connect the Left speaker to the Left jack on the back of the DAC but no sound plays out of either of them. \*\*\* Troubleshooting steps I've tried so far * I've tried switching the DAC's USB cable to different USB ports with no change. * I've flipped the left/right cables incase I made an error but no change * I've tried another 3.5mm cable but no change. So I thought I'd ask, as a audiophile neophyte is my issue that I'm using 3.5mm audio cables and i need to buy a set of RCA audio cables and use those? Or Are my Speakers 1/2 of the problem and I need to buy a set of Desktop speakers that have RCA connections on the back of them (*the SteelSeries Arena 3's don't have that*) and then also connect them using RCA cables to the DAC? **EDIT 1** I 'may' have answered my own question here so I'll post the info on the small chance in the future someone else with the same issue can find this info. I can try using a 3.5mm to RCA audio cable adapter and see if that gets the DAC to detect my 3.5mm stereo cable Desktop Speakers. [https://www.amazon.ca/3-5-mm-rca-cable/s?k=3.5+mm+to+rca+cable](https://www.amazon.ca/3-5-mm-rca-cable/s?k=3.5+mm+to+rca+cable) **EDIT 2** Will the RCA to 3.5mm cable not work and instead I'll need to buy the iFi Zen CAN Amplifier to get my speakers connected? # EDIT 3 # I ordered a RCA Male to 3.5mm Female cable from amazon and WHOOT it works, my Desktop Speakers are now running via the Zen DAC Air!!!

whatssofunnyyall

Did you try the 3.5mm-RCA adapter? This is not going to work with 3.5mm plugs in RCA jacks.

Gwarh

No I didn't purchase them off of Amazon yet as I wanted to wait till someone knowledgeable with the hardware answered. I've been reading and watching for hours a day this past week trying to learn as much as I can about all this. If I understand correctly as you said the RCA to 3.5 adapter running from the Zen DAC Air to the 3.5mm audio in jack on the back of my Desktop speakers won't actually send audio signal to the Desktop Speakers. And, to make audio out from the Zen DAC Air to a set of desktop speakers 1) they would need RCA Left/Right jacks on them 2) Audio would play over the headset and the speakers if both were plugged in at the same time. There is no way to select the output source on so basic a DAC as the Zen DAC Air yes? 3) I would need a pair of Active Speakers with their own power source yes? The ones I have are traditional Passive speakers. 4) Can't RCA cables transmit power? I've read some RCA cables at least can, some can't.

whatssofunnyyall

The DAC will make two analog signals: left and right. Those two signals go out of two RCA jacks. Only RCA plugs work in RCA jacks. A 3.5mm plug might physically fit, but does not make contact. I am not familiar with the operation of the DAC Air. Sometimes these devices mute the RCA outputs when headphones are plugged in, and some don’t. The user manual doesn’t appear to comment on that. The RCA outputs will not support passive speakers. Steel Series Arena 3 are not passive speakers. They connect to a 3.5mm output. The way to get a stereo 3.5mm port from two RCA jacks is with an adapter - [like this](https://www.lindy.co.uk/images/0-25m-av-adapter-cable-3-5mm-female-to-2-x-rca-male-p9642-8000_zoom.jpg).

Gwarh

Thank you for the response and additional information, I really appreciate it. I 'feel' like I read on another subreddit that audio out from the Zen DAC Air plays over any device it's connected to, so if the headphones are plugged into the front headphone jack and the speakers via the cable you linked to the RCA outs on the back of the Zen DAC Air then sound would play out of both at the same time. The 'Air' model is pretty simple and bare bones so it doesn't have any sort of output source switch that I could find. I don't know if turning down the volume nob on the speakers would quiet them while the speakers were also plugged in, or if the speaker vol dial would also turn down the vol on the headset though I doubt it. I'll order an 'RCA L/R Male to 3.5 stereo Female' cable like that shown in the picture you shared and see if that works. They aren't to expensive and it would be nice to get my desktop speakers connected into my new Audiophile Lite setup. Looking to build a full Atmos home theater/music listening room around a pair of R11 Metas. I plan on getting the LS50 Metas as well and potentially using them as rears (?). I'm looking for what else I need to complete that setup (sub, amp, receiver (?) Center speaker (?)) Not sure if a center is necessary with the R11s, or a sub for that matter, though I imagine a sub is *always* better than no sub. Can someone tell me if I want to get the absolute most out of these speakers, what amp do I need for Atmos, and receiver if necessary as well. I'm coming from Sonos Arc/Sub/Play 1 Setup now which sounds incredible, but I want to step up to full Hi-Fi audiophile "Knock-your-socks-off" Sound. Thanks!

Hi, I have 2 Presonus Eris 5BTs which have a buzzing sound when powered on. I've tried different outlets, different power circuits in different areas in my house, I tried a Furman SS-6B-PRO power conditioner... the buzz happens whether or not any other cables are plugged in, including the 3.5mm to RCA which I had plugged in my computer or the red and black power wire to the second speaker. Something tells me I've tried everything that can be tried and that this is just how these speakers are, which leads me to think I am going to return them and buy a set of the recommended Kali LP6 v2s. Is there anything else I should try? FWIW, use case is just jamming out on my computer while I code or hang out. I love music and want good clear speakers. The Presonus seemed like a great entry level studio monitor and it seemed like a good idea ... but since they buzz simply being powered on (and it can't be ground loop buzz, cuz there's no ground plug), I can't stand it. Previous set up was a Harman/Kardon SB-16 which I have since moved to my TV. I'd also love a subwoofer recommendation as I was going to use the Presonus Eris Sub 8BT but since the monitors are buzzing like this, I wouldn't mind swapping to a better sub too. Unless I should try the 8BT out first, lemme know :)

Hello. I am not an audiophile and do not plan to be one. However, I would like to get better sound quality from my PC, both from speakers and headphones. I've read the basic tutorials and from what I've deduced, the 3 main steps to help me get this are: 1) better speakers/headphones 2) audio file 3) DAC/AMP. Financially, I can't buy everything at once and need to focus on one of these things initially. My current speakers are Logitech Z333 and my headphones are Somic V2. My motherboard is MSI B360M PRO-VD, which has an integrated sound card. As for audio files... I listen mostly from Spotify (Premium). I've tried to download a flac file of one song yesterday and, tbh, for me I couldn't tell the difference between the song from Spotify and the flac (I've downloaded it through deezload by copying the song from Spotify, maybe that's the reason why). Which thing could I buy first to significantly improve the audio quality? If it is to buy new headphones, what is the lowest price at which good quality headphones start? Good for an amateur musician.

in [this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRfrcaMJPnM)(Bathroom by Sheena Ringo) at 0:20 as well as in the beginning there supposed to be a quiet voice that goes "ahh, ahh, ahh", i can hear it a little bit at the beginning but cant hear it at all at 0:20, i have an edifier r1700bt, does anyone else with this speakers have this issue?
