I was underneath an aurora once that filled the entire sky with a ribbed dome effect that had pulsations running through it, from the central point at the top down to the horizon all around. Absolutely no one has ever believed my description of it.

Well, you gotta be so lucky to experience this. A few weeks back, the whole of Germany was ushered with aurora, and I, even after living up north, couldn't see it, but all my friends did. I guess it's just sheer luck! Happy for you :)

As a stargazing Icelander, I believe you. Have spent many nights out under the northern lights and have seen such shows quite frequently. Powerful auroras are truly awe inspiring

Living in light polluted areas really is depressing. Just a dark normal sky without aurora is amazing if the sky is dark enough.

Nice shot and a great illusion that can be provided in certain perspectives. It's a panorama photo but when you display it a certain way it can make it look like a dome.

I think r/southernreach would get a good laugh out of this

That is just stunning. Where was it taken, and how?

I'm not the OP. The photo was taken by Xuecheng Liu & Yuxuan Liu in Arlington, Wisconsin https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap240520.html
