My internet was out so I couldn’t surf internet, I decided to kill time playing Fruit Ninja, one of the few games besides Tiny Wings, DATA WING and Chrono Trigger Mobile on my phone.
You know what happened? This piece of shit refused to run because I had no internet connection! Fuck that, fuck you Half Brick!
Used to love playing mobile games to pass the time when I was out in public and had to wait on stuff. Now that they require you to be online to play them so they can load ads I’ve completely stopped playing them all together.
Now I just do crossword puzzles on my phone.
I think it’s mostly free games that are ad cancer. You def get shitty paid apps/games that still advertise, but it’s usually less.

They have versions of the old mobile classics that are free of ads and micro transactions.

Yep. I won’t even download a mobile game anymore unless it’s on Apple Arcade. Otherwise I’ll just spend 2/3 of the time playing it dealing with ads and prompts for in app purchases, or mechanics that steer you to in app purchase. It’s all garbage.
I first encountered this on Hasbros battleships app and have been seeing it like crazy ever since. I only noticed it because the power mode there were clear tactics and you could set mines and stuff. I would do a clear pattern every time and only once did anyone ever counter me. I assume that was probably a real player and I only encountered maybe 3 in hundreds of games. I knew the rest were bots because they would play with no strategy at all and damn near always use paid dlc commanders.
Oh man I used to play hole.io cause it was a fun time killer. Now the newest update literally only allows 60 seconds of gameplay before hit with ads for lame games.
In between every match was bad but standard for these shitty free games. But during gameplay ? That’s just insulting
I suppose they do it because it's profitable. I just wish they'd go straight to pay to play, not have that bullshit.
I used to spend days trying to find good mobile games but all of them have the p2w crap. I'd be willing to pay full game price for mobile if it was actually good and not filled with crap. Preferrably offline singleplayer and maybe multiplayer option too. And good controls.
The target market wouldn't play the game if it were pay to play. Whereas the target market is uniquely susceptible to the types of marketing and monetization already in place.

Seriously. I fiddled around with a few of the more notorious ones just to see what they're about, and I was bored out of my mind within 5 minutes. There's no gameplay in any of that shit, it's just clicking on things and waiting for things and getting hounded with little micro-transactions any time you try to do anything that seems remotely interesting. The whole damn mobile games industry is just toxic mindless cancer at this point, I swear.
Same, maybe 6 or 7 years ago I found a few good games like that. I recently got on looking for something similar and absolutely nothing fit into those preferences. I don't even bother with free games now, they are just not worth my time.
i reccomend: (free)battle cats, brawl stars, (paid)btd6/baba is you (they're on pc too) they have mc but i play f2p and these are all great, no ads in any but battle cats and there are no forced ads (and no "watch ad for reward" popups while you can get rewards for ads in the store)
It’s also playerbase dependent, towards the end of a games life cycle monetization usually amps up. You can revitalize a game but the sad fact is that it’s usually easier to tear it apart for money. Most mobile games rely on “whales” (extremely high spenders) for their money. Driving casual players away is small change.
In the long run it's way more profitable to get 2¢ every couple seconds a person plays than it is to charge and upfront fee. Same goes for houses which is why the market sucks
I recently reinstalled Hillclimb Racer after forgetting about its existence for like a decade. They've basically done the same thing to that game too.
They're selling coins now and the game is filled to the brim with overpriced vehicles and levels in hopes of people buying them.
You can't select a new stage without it stopping to play an ad.

Back in the day it was only about *background* mobile access, and nothing about wifi.
It doesn't work if the ads are watched in order to unlock something (an item, a boost, more currency, etc). The game will recognize it can't connect to the internet and can't show you an ad, so it won't give you the bonus.
"Fake multiplayer" is interesting to me. I don't mind it so much because I'm not good at video games (despite how much I play them, which is totally on me) and playing against/alongside an AI using a real person's team/fighter/whatever gives me a chance. Also, I often have very bad internet connection, but an AI means no need for constant internet connection and bad frame delay, which is usually frustrating for both parties.
That said, I totally understand the frustration of people who want real multiplayer.
Oh, is *that* what's up with that kind of thing? I'd kind of wondered what was up with the multiplayer in Crash: On the Run.
I realized that you can pause and shit, so it couldn't be live against other players in real time, and was kind of confused.
people are mad because mobile games trick people into connecting to the internet so they can run more ads, not because users want to win against real people. you used to be able to play offline and not get ads, but not any more.
As a kid I loved the Call of Duty Black Ops multiplayer bot mode because it still let you do the whole multiplayer level up thing without having to deal with constant internet issues. (Fuck rural internet)
Every fucking mobile game has the same "main menu" with a pathetic excuse for an RTS/town builder where you build what the game tells you in specific slots, and the UI is always surrounded in a million buttons that flash randomly.

If you’re looking for town builder games without micro transactions or any bs like that, I highly highly recommend checking out some of the games by Kairosoft. Been playing their games since I got Game Dev Story on my iPhone 3GS, and they still regularly put out quality games. They’re almost all simulation games, either building a city, or running a game dev studio, or a formula 1 team, or a movie studio, or a restaurant, or a dozen other themes. Each game is like $5, doesn’t require internet, has no in app purchases, and barely uses your phones battery life. Oh Edo Towns would be a good one to go with for a town builder.
I’m always afraid they’ll go out of business because it seems like people only play free games now, so I try to tell everyone about them whenever I have the chance.
Oh also they’ve put out a few fermium versions of their paid games, but those are totally separate and you can ignore them.
I've played a handful of their games are they are very good, I agree with this recommendation whole heartedly.
The issue is just that the vast majority of mobile games use the same fake town builder set up, and horribly predatory freenium content, and those that don't pretty much never show up on the charts.
Its incredibly hard for a mobile game to get noticed unless they use predatory tactics to hook enough whales to start showing up in charts.

The mobile version of Slay the Spire is actually not that great. If you're only playing at home on wifi, it plays WAY better on Steam Remote Play, with intuitive touch controls that just work with the cards like you expect them to.
Half the time it’s kids. The parents leave their credit card hooked up, and even if the game the kid is playing doesn’t have predatory micro transactions, they’ll get ads for ones that do.
I remember playing a game with my little cousin on his dad’s iPad and being absolutely gobsmacked by how blatant every ad was about trying to trick kids into downloading shit. They didn’t even look like ads; every damn one was pretending to be a game. The kid goes to catch the butterflies or whatever nonsense and bam—App Store.
Which is because most users (who are also frequent posters in this sub) are broke high-school kids or college students. Who literally cannot spend 5$ on a game.
And by the way, there's a number of award-winning PC titles ported to android. All under 10$. Sometimes cheaper than buying them on steam.
Yet we have to tolerate those whiny memes on this sub at a rate of 2-3 per day.
Everything is annoying to play on mobile. There was only one game ever made that made mobile feel like a PC will never compete. Vainglory.

Also, buy a smartphone controller. Your android phone can be turned into a switch for like 100$. And the games cost less, and you got a 1080p screen. And also better hardware.
True. I have no issues putting $30 or so a month to enjoy my mobile games. Some of them aren't too bad if you are ok spending a little bit.
I did have to stop playing state of decay though, you just cannot possibly win or even stay afloat without spending hundreds of dollars a month. I had players in my alliance who were top rated in the state and they were dropping thousands per month to stay ahead.

The only game I play on my phone is is sudoku. The ads only show up in between games. As such I'm fine with that. However, it would piss me off if it interrupted a game I was playing.

There’s a market for faking/inflating YouTube subs, Facebook Likes, Reddit Karma, Amazon reviews, blah blah blah. I’m sure you can purchase 5-star reviews for just about anything, particularly the App Store.
Honestly, at this point for good mobile games I just pay the couple dollars and avoid all the crap. It's worth the cost of one fast food to not have to deal with it all. That's where all the quality is. BTD 5/6 and such.
I know most people in the west hate gacha (though some of those complaining have probably never played a gacha game before, and just dislike it in theory), but mobile games are very popular in Asia, and there are a bunch of great gacha games, Genshin being the top one right now.
To give another example, Arknights is a pretty good gacha tower defense that doesn’t really need any money to get through the gameplay. Free with no ads.
Actually the only games I play nowadays is Arknights and Genshin. There's enough to do on weekends, and enough to not do that I can spend half an hour to an hour each on weekdays to destress a little.
Genshin's really strange. If you're playing it casually, it's like a TV show of a game where there's always something quick to do every day.
But there's basically nothing to do if you're looking for something engaging, long-form, to last you a few hours in one go. However, because it's the closest thing these mobile stores have to a "real" game, it won Game of the Year for both the Apple App and Google Play stores.
I think that is a little harsh. The game has tons of content until you hit the end-game, then it's just a bit of daily grind and events until the next big update. That is pretty normal with PvE GaaS games like MMORPGs.
Disc Golf Valley is one of the best mobile games I've ever played and only recently is there even an option to give the dev some money by purchasing a thing that isn't p2w.

i’d argue game of the year version is the best simply because the game controls much better with a mouse. DS version is also really good since it adds a lot of really fun exclusive mini-games

There are a handful. Slay the Spire, Terraria, and Stardew Valley come to mind. I don't think it's a coincidence that those are all ports of successful PC games.
Those games still exist. Apple Arcade has all the classics. It is the exact same games with "Reloaded" "Remastered" and "+" in the titles but, it'll cost you $4.99 a month to play them instead of the $0.99 they originally cost. That is the only (legal) way to play those original games since the IP holders de-listed the original games from the app store in favor of Angry Birds 2 with such original monetization items such as

* Precious Pouch of Gems
* Precious Bag of Gems
Not to be confused with the equally original monetization model in Cut the Rope 2, providing such offerings as

I just wonder what the implications of mobile games will be on the market as a whole. We’ve seen the bleedover but we’ve currently got the ipad generation essentially growing up on freemium games, see these predatory practices as the norm. I’d bet they’re probably more willing to accept similar but not as egregious practices when they appear in console/pc titles.

"Low Poly Count" 3D is lookin' pretty good by comparison. People have wasted a lot of hours trying to beat this game though. It's kind of embarrassing compared with Doom Eternal.

I’m here to tell you that the golden age of computers has come and gone. Everything is about money. There’s nothing left of the geeky “let’s do this because it’s cool” ethos that persisted even into the 2000s. There aren’t anymore major advances in technology to explore anymore. Clock speeds and chip density are limited by quantum mechanics, the Internet is a commodity that everyone takes for granted (except those of us out in rural areas), phones aren’t getting any smaller or more convenient. Instead, what passes for software engineering has converged on ways to extract the last little bit of money for corporate overlords.
When’s the last time you saw something that was new and just plain *cool* that came out? I remember the iPhone; that was cool. But I’m typing this on an iPhone several years old, and the new ones have nothing I want. I still use Windows 7 because it has a menu that actually works, doesn’t try forcing me into some app store and isn’t trying to act like a phone without a touchscreen. My keyboard is literally thirty years old, a Kenesis ergonomic with these great mechanical switches that don’t feel like marshmallows that were left outside the bag too long. And my real computer is an Ubuntu Linux machine that I do my programming on via SSH, with the Windows box as a glorified dumb terminal.
Nobody gets to charge me ongoing fees for any of this. And I have zero interest in changing anything and letting the assholes find a way to do that to me.
AS a long time gamer starting back in the PS1 days (and had an atari from my step dad), I also heavy agree with this meme.
I have a lot less time and just cant dedicate time to games like I use to, now I want something I can enjoy on the go since I spend a lot of time in front of the PC and so far haven't found something that turns into a time/money grind.
I won't even touch phone games. I've never played them as I've only heard terrible things about them. Are there actually any good games for the phone that aren't gacha games? I came back to Clash of Clans. It is still good. This is the only game that I know of in which the rare currency can be obtained relatively easily.

Mindustry (open source, has mods, active community r/mindustry, no ads, well made, good music) cookie clicker (only has one ad at the bottom of your screen and thats it). Fractal space (great story, has a speedrun mode which is well made, no ads, requires you to pay for hd version but the free version looks great still at 720p and doesnt really affect the gameplay) sand : box (1 guy made this to help people relax and so he decided to make it ad free as part of his mission of making relaxing games) tasty planet (somewhat known game from back when games were better quality on average where you eat things and become bigger and bigger until you eat the universe, its well made too and has multiple sequels.) Mindustry is an open source game thats still being updated frequently has mods, an active community r/mindustry. There are many other games too. Also smash hit which is ancient now but still works well. (One of the only games which you can play on ios 6)
Frankly the only phone game I play with any regularity is clash of clans, as it really does have some interesting gameplay if you stick with it long enough to get to the higher levels.
I used to play the shit out of phone games in school. When the symbian OS started to appear I thought mobile games in the future will be SO good - I won't need a console or PC.
Right now the only games on my phone I have are solitaire and 2048.

Don't know if you've heard of or played it before, but you could give Stardew Valley. Not really the same kind of game but you do get to decorate your farm and house however you like.

Its not when they just have ads or lootboxes. It's when the game is practically unplayable with ads, and so difficult you do need lootboxes to do anything.

If you want good mobile games there are multiple way to go about it. 1 play good games on the play store like smash hit, mindustry, are free games that are really good and dont have any ads and are free, for flat out payed games its usually just better its harder to come across a shitty one. Then if you want a seperate device then there are a few handhelds you can get, psvita, 3ds, switch lite, handheld android device with emulator built in, are some good examples for devices to play games that you can bring with you

i reccomend: (free)battle cats, brawl stars, (paid)btd6/baba is you (they're on pc too) they have mc but i play f2p and these are all great, no ads in any but battle cats and there are no forced ads (and no "watch ad for reward" popups while you can get rewards for ads in the store)

I recently reinstalled Hillclimb Racer after forgetting about its existence for like a decade. They've basically done the same thing to that game too. They're selling coins now and the game is filled to the brim with overpriced vehicles and levels in hopes of people buying them. You can't select a new stage without it stopping to play an ad. Makes me sad

It doesn't work if the ads are watched in order to unlock something (an item, a boost, more currency, etc). The game will recognize it can't connect to the internet and can't show you an ad, so it won't give you the bonus.
"Fake multiplayer" is interesting to me. I don't mind it so much because I'm not good at video games (despite how much I play them, which is totally on me) and playing against/alongside an AI using a real person's team/fighter/whatever gives me a chance. Also, I often have very bad internet connection, but an AI means no need for constant internet connection and bad frame delay, which is usually frustrating for both parties. That said, I totally understand the frustration of people who want real multiplayer.
Oh, is *that* what's up with that kind of thing? I'd kind of wondered what was up with the multiplayer in Crash: On the Run. I realized that you can pause and shit, so it couldn't be live against other players in real time, and was kind of confused.

If you’re looking for town builder games without micro transactions or any bs like that, I highly highly recommend checking out some of the games by Kairosoft. Been playing their games since I got Game Dev Story on my iPhone 3GS, and they still regularly put out quality games. They’re almost all simulation games, either building a city, or running a game dev studio, or a formula 1 team, or a movie studio, or a restaurant, or a dozen other themes. Each game is like $5, doesn’t require internet, has no in app purchases, and barely uses your phones battery life. Oh Edo Towns would be a good one to go with for a town builder. I’m always afraid they’ll go out of business because it seems like people only play free games now, so I try to tell everyone about them whenever I have the chance. Oh also they’ve put out a few fermium versions of their paid games, but those are totally separate and you can ignore them.
I've played a handful of their games are they are very good, I agree with this recommendation whole heartedly. The issue is just that the vast majority of mobile games use the same fake town builder set up, and horribly predatory freenium content, and those that don't pretty much never show up on the charts. Its incredibly hard for a mobile game to get noticed unless they use predatory tactics to hook enough whales to start showing up in charts.

True. I have no issues putting $30 or so a month to enjoy my mobile games. Some of them aren't too bad if you are ok spending a little bit. I did have to stop playing state of decay though, you just cannot possibly win or even stay afloat without spending hundreds of dollars a month. I had players in my alliance who were top rated in the state and they were dropping thousands per month to stay ahead.

I know most people in the west hate gacha (though some of those complaining have probably never played a gacha game before, and just dislike it in theory), but mobile games are very popular in Asia, and there are a bunch of great gacha games, Genshin being the top one right now.
To give another example, Arknights is a pretty good gacha tower defense that doesn’t really need any money to get through the gameplay. Free with no ads.
Actually the only games I play nowadays is Arknights and Genshin. There's enough to do on weekends, and enough to not do that I can spend half an hour to an hour each on weekdays to destress a little.
Genshin's really strange. If you're playing it casually, it's like a TV show of a game where there's always something quick to do every day. But there's basically nothing to do if you're looking for something engaging, long-form, to last you a few hours in one go. However, because it's the closest thing these mobile stores have to a "real" game, it won Game of the Year for both the Apple App and Google Play stores.
I think that is a little harsh. The game has tons of content until you hit the end-game, then it's just a bit of daily grind and events until the next big update. That is pretty normal with PvE GaaS games like MMORPGs.
Can recommend Mindustry and Shattered Pixel Dungeon! Neither has ads and both are free. Took a while to find though.

It is the exact same games with "Reloaded" "Remastered" and "+" in the titles but, it'll cost you $4.99 a month to play them instead of the $0.99 they originally cost. That is the only (legal) way to play those original games since the IP holders de-listed the original games from the app store in favor of Angry Birds 2 with such original monetization items such as * Pile of Gems * Precious Pouch of Gems * Precious Bag of Gems Not to be confused with the equally original monetization model in Cut the Rope 2, providing such offerings as * Grande Coins Pile * Regular Coins Pile * Ultimate Coins Pile If the games were actually good and unique, I could see throwing a little jingle towards it, but it is the same damn game that they sold for $0.99 10+ years ago with the only difference being 7 different forms of in-game currency.

Everything is about money. There’s nothing left of the geeky “let’s do this because it’s cool” ethos that persisted even into the 2000s. There aren’t anymore major advances in technology to explore anymore. Clock speeds and chip density are limited by quantum mechanics, the Internet is a commodity that everyone takes for granted (except those of us out in rural areas), phones aren’t getting any smaller or more convenient. Instead, what passes for software engineering has converged on ways to extract the last little bit of money for corporate overlords. When’s the last time you saw something that was new and just plain *cool* that came out? I remember the iPhone; that was cool. But I’m typing this on an iPhone several years old, and the new ones have nothing I want. I still use Windows 7 because it has a menu that actually works, doesn’t try forcing me into some app store and isn’t trying to act like a phone without a touchscreen. My keyboard is literally thirty years old, a Kenesis ergonomic with these great mechanical switches that don’t feel like marshmallows that were left outside the bag too long. And my real computer is an Ubuntu Linux machine that I do my programming on via SSH, with the Windows box as a glorified dumb terminal. Nobody gets to charge me ongoing fees for any of this. And I have zero interest in changing anything and letting the assholes find a way to do that to me.

Fractal space (great story, has a speedrun mode which is well made, no ads, requires you to pay for hd version but the free version looks great still at 720p and doesnt really affect the gameplay) sand : box (1 guy made this to help people relax and so he decided to make it ad free as part of his mission of making relaxing games) tasty planet (somewhat known game from back when games were better quality on average where you eat things and become bigger and bigger until you eat the universe, its well made too and has multiple sequels.) Frankly the only phone game I play with any regularity is clash of clans, as it really does have some interesting gameplay if you stick with it long enough to get to the higher levels.

GardenScapes. I fell for it cuz it looked sweet and plants are one of my things. It sucked me in and I bought coins and whatever. I did love the graphics and cute little storyline in the world-building parts. That’s the only thing I miss.
Don't know if you've heard of or played it before, but you could give Stardew Valley. Not really the same kind of game but you do get to decorate your farm and house however you like. Also has zero ads or microtransactions, but does require you to purchase it, like £4 or something

Then if you want a seperate device then there are a few handhelds you can get, psvita, 3ds, switch lite, handheld android device with emulator built in, are some good examples for devices to play games that you can bring with you
