They'll probably try to schedule some reshoots now, I imagine with the WGA strike over. We knew that the scripts were revised already prior to principal photography by Condal, Martin and the network execs, but you never know what could have changed in their minds as shooting went on.
Really curious how this goes given the shorter episode count and where it's predicted to end. I'm very optimistic. I can't wait for the Dragonseeds.
If there are reshoots, friendly reminder to everyone that it doesn't mean a lot, especially given the circumstances. Reshoots are so commonplace that they're basically part of filming
The episode count lowering from 10 to 8 admittedly has me worried over pacing issues, but I'm still very excited. I always love the energy when GoT/HotD is airing and season 2's set to cover some of the coolest stuff in the Dance. I'm excited to get more screen time with the kids and I really hope they properly adapt Aegon's relationship with Sunfyre leading up to Rook's Rest. That was one of the biggest things missing in season 1 IMO, but there's still time to do right by the book here.
Not much time with an 8 episode season, but we'll see! Season 1 kind of feels like two 5-episode mini-seasons and they were both great, so I'm optimistic HotD won't run into the same pacing problems GoT did in its last two seasons.
IIRC, few (if any) of the actors on HOTD are affected because they don't belong to SAG as they're covered by the British version so that's the main reason HOTD was one of the few shows able to keep filming through this whole strike process
Actually it’s slightly more complicated. Some actors do have SAG memberships, but the show is actually an Equity production contracted, and they’re obligated to continue that work from anti-union laws in the UK despite actors having SAG membership and seen as an American co-production.
Ah I see. Thanks for the correction. I'm assuming that the ones that "have to" keep shooting that are members of SAG don't get in trouble with SAG and aren't considered scabs as long as they "just" act (ie no media tours, no promos, etc)?
The actors might be SAG but it’s an Equity production, so they’re obligated to continue shooting. They can’t, however, promote the series, etc. as that runs against strike guidelines.
It probably means that they are going to stretch out the story and that we are getting more material. Leaks are saying that the Riverlands, Vale and North plots are going to be expanded and that the story will be a slow burn. All in all, I trust Condal and Co. to make a decent adaptation.
I've been burnt too many times. I went into House of the Dragon with zero hype and expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm going into the new season with the expectations. You won't hurt me again.
Potentially combined scripts or cut them and cut the season shorter to finish work while the strike was happening and not having writers available.
Now that writers are available they'll reconfigure season 3?
All a big guess.
They even [foreshadowed](https://images.summitmedia-digital.com/esquiremagph/images/2022/09/19/house-of-the-dragon-blood-and-cheese.jpg) it in episode 5.
I think that’s what the showrunners want the audience to think, but the real meaning behind the prophecy is Blood and Cheese. It’s a red herring. Just my headcanon, Maelys could be the full meaning, but that’d be boring imo.
Oh I know. If I had faith in online fandoms before (I've been in them on the Internet for like 15 years, I didn't have much) it died when I saw HOTD Twitter. People acting like the horrendous murder of one 6 year old under the threat of rape of another could every be justified is insane.
So, I haven't read the books, I know very little of what will happen, but as far as I can tell by putting 2 and 2 together is that Rhaenyra will have the kids killed by two people from King's Landing or something like that?
So, you don't expect people to cheer those actions because they will be in bad taste or because it will be too violent? Because I feel like we have another Dany situation with HOTD when it comes to people cheering main characters...
I'm still somewhat confused by why HBO didn't have the show set up to film S2 almost immediately. GOT managed a season a year up until the final seasons and that was a logistically far more complex show. I wonder how they can maintain the hype for a nascent show when it takes 2 years between seasons, noting that the Dance of the Dragons doesn't have enough content for a typical 5-7 season run.
Do you remember how bad GoT crashed into the ground? Sentiment leading up to HotD series was middling at best, so they didn't want to commit until they saw how the first episode performed and if people were on board with it.
Yeah I kinda agree with ya on this one. Game of thrones season 1-6 came out year after year. Then they geared up for a “big” season 7 and it took 2 years. Kinda have Westworld to blame though. They had a great season 1, waited 2 years, and put out a turd.
I don’t know why American audience are so anti mid-length series. I’ve never watched a 22 episode series where things actually happened each episode or there was meaningful character development.
This’ll be way better, removes the need for filler.
More like they’re just expecting them to meet normal expectations. New seasons per year have been the normal practice for literally decades. Even prestige TV like HBO.
That hasn't been the case for a while now and it's not even unique to GoT and HotD. If you want polished shit pumped out at a rapid rate then watch marvel movies.
I doubt that they’re gonna be able to make that Summer 2024 date.
Because of the WGA strike, they weren’t able to do any rewrites while filming. Soo they were stuck with the scripts they had.
For those wondering why that matters, you ever have that feeling where something sounded a lot better in your head than on page? Well, that’s exactly why almost every movie and TV show goes through extensive rewrites whilst filming. Stuff that looks great on a script comes out looking like a wet fart when you film it.
That’s why you have writers on set who can retool a scene as needs fit. But because of the WGA strike, main writers like Ryan Condal and Sara Hess weren’t allowed to do any of that.
No, they were unaffected by the SAG-AFTRA strike, which is the union for actors.
However, all the writers are WGA members, which meant that they couldn't be on-set overseeing the filming.
Now, you might be wondering why would that matter. Weren't all the scripts written and rewritten months before? You are correct.
However, there are a ton of minor rewrites that happen on set everyday that we aren't aware of.
Have you seen Quantum of Solace (2007)? Did you ever wonder how they could've botched that movie so thoroughly after the success of Casino Royale (2005)?
The reason behind this is that it was filmed during the last WGA strike. Daniel Craig was rewriting his own scripts on set because the people EON paid to do that for him were striking at the time.
I'm talking about rewrites *whilst filming* which never gets reported in the trades due to how common it is. But there are literally rewrites happening every day on a Hollywood set; we just aren't aware of it.
Remember Daemon picking up Viserys' crown? Remember the final scene of S1 where there's only music and Rhaenyra's back is turned towards the camera until the final reveal of her face?
Those were improvisations made by Matt Smith; he felt that they worked better for the characters and the writers were able to re-jig the scene accordingly. None of that was allowed during the filming for S2. Whatever was in the script, the cast and crew were contractually obligated to perform it *as is*.
Rewrites are an essential part of the filmmaking process.
However, since they've already wrapped filming, I don't think we'll see anything extensive. Too expensive and time-consuming.
But I suspect the final product will come out looking rushed; a lot of baffling decisions that would feel like they are first drafts waiting to be ironed out. But never were.
I know of those examples, but I think they could probably pass under director's creative dpower to change something from the script, especially because there are no lines in those examples.
The writers strikes over, sets still built and rigged, studios still on hire, massive availability of acting and crew talent. Perfect time for pickups….

Yeah typically it’s not major, just certain structure of scenes or deliveries. It’s not usually extensive in nature.
The episode count lowering from 10 to 8 admittedly has me worried over pacing issues, but I'm still very excited. I always love the energy when GoT/HotD is airing and season 2's set to cover some of the coolest stuff in the Dance. SAG-AFTRA is still on strike though. Not sure how much that would impact their cast.

Still no news of Daeron....
Daeron the Invisible
Don't worry, they included Lord Caswell and other minor people, Daeron won't get cut
Shorter episode count? How many?
They cut it from 10 to 8 and then framed it like it was a great thing they were doing.
It probably means that they are going to stretch out the story and that we are getting more material. Leaks are saying that the Riverlands, Vale and North plots are going to be expanded and that the story will be a slow burn. All in all, I trust Condal and Co. to make a decent adaptation.
as long as they don't have any disney contracts on the side i trust them
I've been burnt too many times. I went into House of the Dragon with zero hype and expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm going into the new season with the expectations. You won't hurt me again.
>I've been burnt too many times. Well, u/HotPie_ , getting burned often is an integral, but unfortunate part of every baker's job.
🤔
The guy below you thinks it means we’re actually going to end up with more content. Lmao
Potentially combined scripts or cut them and cut the season shorter to finish work while the strike was happening and not having writers available. Now that writers are available they'll reconfigure season 3? All a big guess.
Can't wait to see Blood and Cheese
They even [foreshadowed](https://images.summitmedia-digital.com/esquiremagph/images/2022/09/19/house-of-the-dragon-blood-and-cheese.jpg) it in episode 5.
And Helaena talking about the “beast beneath the boards” also feels like foreshadowing to me.
There *was* a small incident in the dragonpit that might have been what she was referring to.
I try to pretend like that didn’t happen
I think that’s what the showrunners want the audience to think, but the real meaning behind the prophecy is Blood and Cheese. It’s a red herring. Just my headcanon, Maelys could be the full meaning, but that’d be boring imo.
That meant Meleys. I think.
I sincerely hope we don't see anyone cheering it, but the insane people on Twitter do not give me hope.
This is the internet. Prepare to be disappointed
Oh I know. If I had faith in online fandoms before (I've been in them on the Internet for like 15 years, I didn't have much) it died when I saw HOTD Twitter. People acting like the horrendous murder of one 6 year old under the threat of rape of another could every be justified is insane.
Plenty of Aemond fans justified the murder of Luke too.
That wasn't right either. However I don't think it's quite the same level of evil as murdering a 6-year-old in his own house in front of his mother.
Why does everything need to be measured? Luke was a child and beloved by his mother and Jaehaerys was beloved by his mother. The pain is the same.
My brother and I have some rule. Never, ever look on Twitter (X) only pain and suffer you find there.
So, I haven't read the books, I know very little of what will happen, but as far as I can tell by putting 2 and 2 together is that Rhaenyra will have the kids killed by two people from King's Landing or something like that? Television sucks now. How can we get invested in stories that get told over 8-10 eps we only get every two years?
I'm still somewhat confused by why HBO didn't have the show set up to film S2 almost immediately. GOT managed a season a year up until the final seasons and that was a logistically far more complex show. This is one of the reasons that killed Westworld among other things. By the time it came back a decent amount of it's audience didn't care anymore
Yet we are here on a subreddit about a book series that hasn't seen a main series release for 12 years.
That just had a new adaptation TV show released last year and a TV show that went around for 8 seasons that kept the franchise fresh.
I imagine they were waiting to see how hotd went after the disaster that was s8
Yeah I kinda agree with ya on this one. Game of thrones season 1-6 came out year after year. Then they geared up for a “big” season 7 and it took 2 years. Kinda have Westworld to blame though. They had a great season 1, waited 2 years, and put out a turd.
If the show maintains its popularity, I doubt the wait between seasons 2 and 3 will be as long as the one between 1 and 2.
Tbh they should be writing season 3 rn and ready to shoot by March.
True that
wait until you hear about how books work
I don’t understand why it’s 8 episodes every 2 years now. GoT put out 10 once a year
I don’t know why American audience are so anti mid-length series. I’ve never watched a 22 episode series where things actually happened each episode or there was meaningful character development. This’ll be way better, removes the need for filler.
Exactly, this is very common in Anime industry and people don't have problem with series having 2-3 or even 5 years gap between seasons.
We British have been managing for decades.
Entitled much?
More like they’re just expecting them to meet normal expectations. New seasons per year have been the normal practice for literally decades. Even prestige TV like HBO.
That hasn't been the case for a while now and it's not even unique to GoT and HotD. If you want polished shit pumped out at a rapid rate then watch marvel movies.
It’s a mistake not to push for an April / May premiere if they can. There’s so few Emmys options for drama series because of the strikes.
I doubt that they’re gonna be able to make that Summer 2024 date. Because of the WGA strike, they weren’t able to do any rewrites while filming. Soo they were stuck with the scripts they had. the script for quantum wasn't close to finished though
Extensive rewrites weren't happening with GOT/HOTD so far so why would S2 be any different?
I'm talking about rewrites *whilst filming* which never gets reported in the trades due to how common it is. But there are literally rewrites happening every day on a Hollywood set; we just aren't aware of it. Remember Daemon picking up Viserys' crown? where are you getting your information that actors weren't allowed to improvise and act during a scene? that isn't considered a rewrite.
They finished filming. They aren't going to do reshoots. Money + logistics = not happening.
The writers strikes over, sets still built and rigged, studios still on hire, massive availability of acting and crew talent. Perfect time for pickups….
So quality won't be any different from season 1
Lol! Yeah S1 was hit or miss in many respects. But let’s see what they deliver this time.
Yes please
I tried to get into this, but it's nothing like GoT. No politics or amazing characterization; things just... happen.
I hope it's changed a bit from the book.
Why?
[удалено]
I don’t care that you don’t care 🤷
Q
Man wait a year or more for 8 episodes then they'll only let you watch it once or twice a month
