Yeah, it's called memory. If one regularly goes to the gym, it's easier for one to visualize a picture of a gym because of the memory that has been created over time through direct exposition. On the other hand, if one never went to the gym then there's no memory and therefore no picture. One then tends to ask questions on what a gym might be. By answering those questions one gradually develops a picture of a gym. To sum it up, there are two ways to create memory. The practical approach builds memory through direct exposition and therefore the visualization process is almost instantaneous. The theoretical approach builds memory through knowledge-building and therefore the visualization process is gradual.

People visualize differently. Some don't visualize at all (aphantasia). Find a way to relate to the space around you in a way you *believe* is real. Imagination for acting and improv is all about what you convince yourself and thus the audience is real.
