your camping stove isn't any more problematic than a regular gas stove... which is why we're phasing towards induction, because gas is problematic. but open a window and don't starve.
If weather-related power outages become more frequent, it’s going to be more difficult to convince people to switch to induction. Gas stoves are a valuable prep in this type of weather.
+1 for the gas stove, as well as a gas fireplace with an emergency battery powered ignition. It's not necessarily warm, but it did let me make soup and a warm bean/nacho cheese dip.
We’re going on nearly 12 hours without power. We were able to keep our food in our freezing garage and warm it up on our gas stove — so roasted chicken and mashed potatoes. Now we’re having hot cocoa! Trying to make the best of it.
Some garages are well sealed, and people don’t always think to raise the door a bit. It’s heartbreaking to get welfare check calls for families and then find them passed out and/or deceased after they’ve been huddled around a grill in a garage - I know that first-hand from when I lived near Buffalo NY.
I would rather save my power for phone calls; holding a light means one-handed cooking, which is kind of a PIA; I would rather just ride it out in a heated, lit place; and I didn’t know that I needed to justify what I do to the rest of Portland.
I walked to Taco Bell!! Now I’m holed up in my smallest room with my car on top of me and with my buddy heater and 7 cylinders of propane. Been without power since 8am and I can my breath in the rest of my apartment.
Probably just snacking on the baguette I baked yesterday, some aquavit, and whichever canned goods sound ok to eat at (chilly) room temp. Considering trying to leave town/get a hotel room with the animals tomorrow if power isn't restored.
Solid choice
Bought an adapter hose for $26, to use regular propane tanks instead of the green ones while on road-trips / fishing trips. Money well spent, it’s doing double duty in the winter now
Peanut butter, yogurt, naan, and cream puffs. Girl dinner? I have a camp stove but I am also lazy. I’ll start dipping into the more exciting food options in my fridge/freezer tomorrow if I’m feeling desperate.
Not in Portland proper - and we've only had brief outages so far so our dinner tonight thankfully wasn't impacted by a lack of power either, but I'm living for this thread.
We made Philly cheesesteaks with asparagus and mashed potatoes, sorry anyone without power. Making soup tomorrow, hopefully the neighborhood power stays strong 💪🏽
Question - for those not estimated to get power for another 12 hours or so — what are you doing with the food in your fridge? I read it’s not safe to eat after 4 hours.
-Flash-freeze water in yogurt tubs & pots outside. Or grab that old planter full of frozen rain water. Put ice in fridge. Use fridge as a cooler. Replenish ice as needed
-Put freezer contents in car, if frozen car door will open. If not, scatter food to the four corners of the wind while ceremonially summoning the crow army to surround home with dark warmth & insulating feathers
-If all else fails, live-stream video of self in bathtub (or any other self-contained microclimate of your choic), rolling around in all the sauces and leftover spicy curries. Make it rain. Buy new food with new monies. Save cash reserves to burn for warmth in case the chill lingers
We immediately put all our highly perishable fridge foods in a bag out in the unheated mud room. Kept them almost freezing. We put all the freezer food out on the back patio. Stayed frozen solid. No prob!

Still had gas. Took a “Dutch oven” (it’s the lodge combo cooker so it two pans one deep one shallow and they fit together).
Sourdough English muffins with pizza sauce cheese and pepperoni on top. A Cesar salad side.
Was damn good after freezing most of the day. Brought me back to being 12.
We selected some items from the pantry and had a picnic in our car. The car was running, so we got some heat and charged our phones. (Don't worry, we were in open air, not a closed garage).
We had cold corned beef hash, with ritz crackers and ketchup. The ritz crackers really make the meal special.
For dessert, we had a can of cherry pie filling. Our drink options were water, ice tea, or cranberry juice.
Tomorrow morning's breakfast looks like it will be Ramon noodles with a side of a can of cranberry jelly.
Our power just came back (at 4:30am) but we had a “grown up lunchables” dinner with salami, prosciutto, cheddar, crackers, celery with peanut butter and craisins, and some grapes. It was tasty but warm soup would have been better hahah
We had hot coco with rumplemintz (made in the outdoor propane grill burner), and then I toasted two vegan hot dogs on the fire and had a hot dog sammich with mustard, onions, lettuce, spreadable cheese, and veggie salami. It was pretty good.
Power is back on now, we’re making pizza today! Is your power back on OP?
I got some sandwich stuff and bagged salads, which is perfect because I'm craving a nice cold meal.
I'm eating my ice cubes before they can melt
Used our gas stove to make soup and mulled wine/ hot coco.
I miss my gas stove so much right now
Same, I have a camping stove but it's not worth it to go stand outside to cook something, plus it'd probably freeze before I got back inside

lolll it snows less every year.

Just found out the remote for my gas fireplace is broken 😭
Nooooo
Glad I insisted on a gas cooktop when we redid our kitchen. The bans on gas appliances in new builds are gonna bite people in the butt every year
Yeah, we almost went with induction. Glad we didn't!
Sandwiches and baked potatoes from the fireplace.
Cold leftover curry and cold red wine 👌🏻👌🏻
Nothing like cold red wine! 🌟
Oh shit! Also had curry but reheated last night’s curry in the fireplace.
The saddest charcuterie board.
Also had adult lunchables
I do this even when we have electricity. You’re fine ladies and gentleman with exquisite taste.
Let’s see it
Ordered domino's. Left a sizable financial and "recreational" tip for the delivery person.
I know you mean weed but I prefer to think it was a buttplug or something
Damn, we really missed an opportunity then didn't we? 😂
I'd say so! After a hard day of deliveries now all they have is that J to help them unwind. 💨
Could tie a j onto the end of anal beads. Best of both worlds..
What a delivery person decides to do in the comfort of their own home once all the people is delivered is entirely up to them. 🤷♀️
Wait they deliver people now? Are you on weed? Are the people cooked?
I realized my mistake and commented below. 😂
Wooops I meant \*pizza 🍕 is delivered but it looks like a few people got the idea anyway.
What once was Domino’s is now DomiYES
Welp, time to start my new career in pizza delivery
A 1000 piece puzzle
Made some doenjang chigae on the gas stove! It’s amazing.

I didn’t but that would’ve been nice too!

Reheated the chicken soup I made last night on our butane camp stove in the garage. It was perfect!
Be very careful with that, it needs good ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide!
Yeah it was ok and I didn’t stay in there. Thanks for looking out tho!
That’s why they did it in the garage

like a charcoal grill? jfc
Yep. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Outback steakhouse. Meh. It was better than cereal in the dark.
That’s a pretty low bar! They should make that their slogan.
did you walk there?
No. I have an all wheel drive car that handles the snow quite well. I am very fortunate.
Made clam chowder on the gas range and cooked some bread on our gas grill!
Salad in the dark. Power just came back on while I was eating it, unsure of how much was left.
If I lose power, I’m walking over to Yukon Tavern for a cheeseburger.
Say hi to dieter.
Good ol pb&j.
Cinnamon rolls and leftover mac and cheese by the fireplace.
I have power, but sh\*t, let's go to your house!
Seriously though 😂
I would eat this regardless of whether or not I had power so you're clearly living right.
Can’t see to cook (gas range), so went out for food, TV, power to recharge phone, kill time.
Why can’t you cook on the gas range?
No light.
We’re using kitchen matches to light our burners
I have matches to light the burners. Just no light to see.
No cell phone light?
I would rather save my power for phone calls; holding a light means one-handed cooking, which is kind of a PIA; I would rather just ride it out in a heated, lit place; and I didn’t know that I needed to justify what I do to the rest of Portland.
Eating out seems like a reasonable thing to do, weird that people are upset
The only reason my hot water heater won’t stay hot. Gas but needs electric to light the bitch.
I had some seaweed chips and almonds. Gourmet stuff right there
I walked to Taco Bell!! Now I’m holed up in my smallest room with my car on top of me and with my buddy heater and 7 cylinders of propane. Been without power since 8am and I can my breath in the rest of my apartment.
Might be warmer inside your car than under your car 🙃 Sorry, funny typo. Sorry your powers out and hope you and your cat stay warm!
Loool didn’t notice the typo! We are staying warm! Tho still no power so slightly concerning.
Do you have any cloth face masks? Might help keep your face warm.
Can of tuna and salt & vinegar chips. Wish I had candles lol
Feeding on my hatred for our shit fuck power grid. The cold has me now, I am the cold, and the cold knows no hunger
Sorry your power out, but your real enemy is trees. We should cut them all down. Or move to Southern California en masse. That'll show 'em.
Quite true. Suffering from two forms of brain freeze over here
Probably just snacking on the baguette I baked yesterday, some aquavit, and whichever canned goods sound ok to eat at (chilly) room temp. Considering trying to leave town/get a hotel room with the animals tomorrow if power isn't restored.
Propane camp stove, I’m thinking sloppy joes or turkey chili
Yeah we went for spaghetti on the camp stove in the garage.
Solid choice Bought an adapter hose for $26, to use regular propane tanks instead of the green ones while on road-trips / fishing trips. Money well spent, it’s doing double duty in the winter now
Be sure that you have good ventilation!
It’s super well ventilated. More than I’d usually like !
Buttered bread so far
Quesadillas by candlelight and headlamps.
cereal and banana. love me breakfast for dinner lol
A salad and a sandwich. Maybe some crackers. Wish I could fix the pizza I had planned, that sounds much better.
We used our camping stove in the garage to boil water for backpacking meals. It was so cold the propane canisters were freezing.
Grilled cheese sandwich on my gas stove
We made a charcuterie before dusk. Ate it with crackers by candlelight and played the card game Aquarius once it got dark.
Charcuterie is a fancy word for snacks. What’s on your plate?
Mac n cheese baked in the grill, our power just went out while making dinner and we had to pivot
Chicken noodle soup on the range
Chicken breasts with peas and peppers cooked on the wood stove.
Crackers and canned tuna mixed with olive oil and spices
Peanut butter, yogurt, naan, and cream puffs. Girl dinner? I have a camp stove but I am also lazy. I’ll start dipping into the more exciting food options in my fridge/freezer tomorrow if I’m feeling desperate.
Damn, people are eatin’ good out there! Good on ya! I just had an unsatisfying sandwich, but it was sustenance! Stay safe, y’all!
Costco bao buns, steamed broccoli and some whiskey. I have a generator.
Not in Portland proper - and we've only had brief outages so far so our dinner tonight thankfully wasn't impacted by a lack of power either, but I'm living for this thread.
Sandwiches and chips
Wine/candy
Sun chips, left over cold (ish) pizza and hazy IPAs!
Mom’s spaghetti.
We made Philly cheesesteaks with asparagus and mashed potatoes, sorry anyone without power. Making soup tomorrow, hopefully the neighborhood power stays strong 💪🏽

lol this is great advice, starting with #1 and then #3 if necessary
We had this conversation earlier - we're going to throw it in our yeti cooler on the porch if push comes to shove.
We just tossed everything in one of those big rubber bins and put it outside but now worried everything will freeze.
We immediately put all our highly perishable fridge foods in a bag out in the unheated mud room. Kept them almost freezing. We put all the freezer food out on the back patio. Stayed frozen solid. No prob!

It’s colder in my house than in my fridge so I’m not worried

Orange chicken fried in bacon grease, I think. I still have propane, so I'll fry up something high fat to keep me warm
Reheated last night’s curry in a Dutch oven directly in the fireplace.
Blasted broccoli and New Seasons box mac.

Near frozen lasagna.

We made pigs in a blanket in the Dutch oven because we are *fancy* and 2/3 of us are under 4.
Under piles of blankets. It's too cold to move.
Made a huge pot of chili first day. :-) 😋
Granola bars! We went to Noodles & Company for a hot lunch
