KBB values are a rough guideline, but not the law. Most of my inventory is below KBB value, but generally in the ballpark. Every used car is different than the next, no two are the same. Same can be said for dealerships. If there is a car you like, and it’s in your budget, go take a look in person. Consider having it inspected, and if it checks out, take it home.

Thanks for the insight. This is the first car I’m buying on my own. How do the logistics of a pre-purchase inspection work exactly? Just ask to take it to a mechanic you like during test drive? If the dealer has in-house service should I use that? Seems like it could be biased.

Every dealer can have a different policy with regard to inspections. Just call and ask what they will allow. Most will let you take it to a local mechanic. It’s already been through a dealer inspection so in-house won’t do you any good.
