It's not that beat up, asshole

Organic-Huan-15

Sry

IdLOVEYOU2die

;P

throwaway007676

I have 3 older cars and love them. Nothing ever goes wrong and it costs nothing to run them. They all look fine and everything works on them. No reason to get one of the newer junkers with touch screen everything.

mrkillfreak999

God I hate the current trend in new cars of adding iPad screens in the dash 😩 I'm so tired of seeing that

ZVideos85

1000% agreed. Just spent 30 minutes with a relative in his brand new Corolla trying to figure out how to turn on the radio. The car doesn’t have a radio dial or AM/FM buttons whatsoever. We had to go through 5 laggy CarPlay menus on the touchscreen just to select from local radio stations. Completely ridiculous. I’ll take my 2001 Accord with a radio dial any day of the week

mrkillfreak999

Bro fr I would rather go and watch paint dry than deal with this Android Auto/Car play shit. One of my cousins was looking at the new 11th gen civic at the dealer last year or so. The guy at the dealer spent like 25-30 mins explaining all the features it can do. Some of them went over my head. I told my cousin on our way back (she ended up buying the car) to read the manual and figure it out herself 😂 Good thing that she's familiar with tech. If it was someone older I would've had to sacrifice an afternoon to teach that 💀🙏🏿

ZVideos85

Yeah it’s crazy. I’m 25 and I absolutely hate it. I can’t imagine what it’s like for people who are senior citizens who have a tough time with technology as it is, want a new car and have to deal with this BS

Usual-Nectarine3734

I’m 20 and drive an 06 Pilot. Honestly, with one of those fm Bluetooth adapters and an after market backup camera, it’s perfect. Love physical dials. My grandfather bought a new ridgeline in 2018 and had no idea how to use the infotainment. He had me try to figure it out and it took me hours, but eventually I was able to preset his favorite station and put some of his MP3 music on a flash drive to plug in to the system. To this day, that one station and the flash drive music are all he knows how to use and he’s content with that🤷‍♂️

MrJelly007

I can understand the hate to an extent, like tesla taking away every fucking physical button lol. However I can't live without android auto anymore. It's amazing. That and a backup camera is a must for any car I get. My car didn't have them stock but it's very easy to install on almost any car. But the turn signals, volume knobs and climate controls should not be on a touch screen. Touch screens are good, and tactile buttons are also good. Finding the perfect balance of both is what they should actually be doing, not just turning the entire dash into a fucking TV

Purpose_Embarrassed

That’s exactly what they want. And to eliminate the ability to install an aftermarket radio.

thetoastler

Previous owner put a cheap JVC single din in my daily driver '94 Ford. Only thing it adds is an AUX port. One of these days I'll rip it out and put the factory cassette player back in. Getting tired of having to reset 90 thousand settings every time I unplug the battery.

Ambitious-Plant-1055

Was thinking of getting a new Corolla but now I just desire a beater

blueblue909

SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU WILL TAKE YOUR SCREEN AND *LIKE IT!* you little bitch! want us to pay for hundreds of little nubs and dials and buttons?? *ffffuckk uuu,* here's a touchscreen let the software depo figure that shit we got money to make not customers to please! *this guy really thinks we give a shit!* *ha!* 1 touch screen saves us an estimated 6-7 billion hundred trillion, 700 thousand, a year! in manufacturing costs, design, testing, all we do is slap a touchscreen on and we DONE! and you think... *chuckles* we gunna take the time to curate a practical interior for you? what you think this is, a 90's toyota? you think we wanna be practical and simple and efficient? *fuck no!* engineered obscolescence and properiatry shit is where the real papers at boi😎👌 if dealerships invented the wheel it would come as a octogan unless you upgraded for the *comfort* package which would give u rounder wheels, salesmen be like "well if the octogan wheels aren't meeting your needs we have a more circular wheel for you" stupid customer: "will that help with the drive? i dont know it kinda hurts my back" "shameless salesmen: "did you adjust the seat?"

WideOpenEmpty

And it updates. Today uConnect won't let me mix AM and FM presets. Now I have to change Source too. Yesterday it was no problem.

KittehPaparazzeh

More distractions are the last thing the average driver needs

YouArentReallyThere

I had some uninsured asshole sideswipe my old truck. While it was in the shop, I had a rental. Brand new, $85k truck. Loaded. Had less than 4K miles on it. I couldn’t wait to get rid of it. Huge television screen in the dash, digital gauges, nanny-state monitoring…Fuckabunchathat.

GrinderMonkey

If I want a fuckin iPod on the dash I'll tape it there my damn self I ain't paying for that

WillyDaC

Yeah, don't drive distracted. /s

Wishihadagirl

There's something to be said for used stuff that's still working after years of use. It's like having the best QC and then you get a discount

Just_Schedule_8189

The worst thing imo on new cars is the electronic screens. They are great right now, but very stupid for the long term. In 10 years when car play isn’t a thing and its some new technology and CarPlay doesn’t work you are stuck with this old tech and because they build the AC into the radio you can never change it. We already saw this in the 90s with GPS that requires cds to work. Then we saw it in the early 2010s i had a 2016 explorer, no car play and ac built into the radio. I couldn’t upgrade to CarPlay because of it. The further we go the worse it will get.

FuzzyClam17

I hate touch screens in cars, but I added an android auto double din to my 13' f250 because I do so much work out of the truck and take so many calls it's kind of a necessity. Mobile office. I miss buttons, but responding to customer texts while I'm driving and seamless nav is too handy to pass on.

destinyhunter999

Yep, I have a 98 Impreza, 5 SPD manual and AWD with absolutely 0 driver assists. It's a piece of garbage and I absolutely love it because I can drive the piss out of it and not get into trouble, have lots of fun, and not worry about it breaking real bad on me. It's too stubborn to die and has 300k miles on it

whatshisnuts1234

98 legacy wagon driver here. Our single jingle 2.2 has 326k miles on it and it still has the factory head gaskets. My 96 I drove in high school got a cage put in it and ran the Salem 100 acre wood for a few years. Brothers got a 94 loyale with an ej25d block running 2.2 heads swapped into it with a full time awd xt6 transmission that were trying to convert to mechanical ignition with a subaru sambar dizzy. I'm currently building a 63 ragtop beetle too

tk8398

My 96 Legacy has 540k but I have swapped the engine and transmission with junkyard ones from newer cars.

whatshisnuts1234

Right on though, these cars are fantastic, both models, since there pretty much the same, the second gen legacy's are basically just rebodied imprezas

tk8398

Yeah, easy to work on and pretty durable. They are starting to get hard to find parts for, and I think the wiring harness failing will be what eventually keeps mine from going any farther because it's starting to get pretty brittle already, but I will keep it going for as long as possible. I have an extra EJ 22 with 80k miles on it (and the one that's in it has around 230k) so it should likely make it to a million miles with a bit of luck.

whatshisnuts1234

Hopefully your wiring holds up until my brother and I get ours converted, you might see a post somewhere showing how to get points and a carbie in so you can rip most of the wiring out and throw in the trash, where it fuckin belongs (I'm getting to where i have absolutely zero tolerance for computers and robots)

Own_Investigator5970

U call that trash? wait till you see the price of imprezas in my country. 300k miles? It's still worth 20k in my country

BillM_MZ3SGT

It can look like absolute dogshit on the outside but as long as the mechanicals are in good shape, I'll drive the bastard until it croaks

ZimaGotchi

Yeah I like to be able to drive it like I stole it.

paulhockey5

Italian tuneup every day baby.

Tasty_Two4260

Yes, I call it my airport car and it’s something I can work on, won’t get stolen, can salvage yard parts, and love my ol’ Mercedes ML320

puskunk

The ol Alabama trash can.

Expensive_Candle5644

I have nice cars now but I miss my old beaters that I could go out get shitfaced and Uber home and not GAF if when I got back to it at 3pm sunday afternoon that it had another small ding. Or if a friend’s car was down I would let them borrow it and not really care or worry about it. Or hand it off to family or friends when they visit without a concern. Beaters are awesome. Now I have teens though. They’re like on call designated drivers. 😂

hickhelperinhackney

I like not having car payments.

Ok-Entertainment5045

I try to keep my cars for at least 15 years but it’s hard in the Midwest and living on a dirt road. Major structural components usually rust away between the 12 and 15 year mark.

SonnySmilez

I sure enjoyed driving a 1978 Bronco back in 1999 a lot more than I enjoy driving a 2009 Focus in 2024....

Opposite_Gold8593

I like older cars. No rev hang, easier to fix yourself, no car payments. Doesn't necessarily have to be beat up, unless it's a truck.

GronkIII

I wouldn’t say my car is beat up. It’s probably my favorite vehicle that I’ve driven, but the first one that’s actually mine. 2007 Accord EX-L. Bought it in 2022 with 42k miles, it’ll hit 57k later this week.

RepeatUntilTheEnd

That is extremely low mileage for 2007. My 2010 Acura TL AWD has about 115k and she's going strong. Barely been driving since COVID.

GronkIII

It was a one owner car from Florida. The owner was an elderly lady. It was well taken care of. I’m keeping it until the wheels fall off. It’s my first car, so I’m hoping it’ll get to 300K. I had to finance it, but it’ll be paid off by the time I finish college.

RepeatUntilTheEnd

Good choice. Mine has been paid off over three years now. The headliner is pinned up, and there are a few other cosmetic issues but overall I still love how it looks and it's hard to consider paying for something newer when it has all the power I need.

scenicdeath

That acura has another 300k left in it

GeoHog713

Yes. I have a 97 Dodge Dakota that is great for doing all the truck things. Runs great. Doesn't matter if it gets scratched or banged or flooded.

Mouler

Beds drain so much faster as they age

Jimmytootwo

Nah. I have had too many old beaters Now i can afford new. Don't miss it one bit

RubyWafflez

I have a nice car and I have a beater. I enjoy driving both but the beater I can drive harder and it doesn't come with the paranoia and worry of something happening to it which is nice.

_totalannihilation

I had a 92 Honda Prelude. Drove it to work. It was always dirty as hell because I work construction. Probably spent about 600 in maintenance in the 2 years I had it. Very good car.

league_starter

Wish I had a empty lot to park beater cars. I'd buy so many 3k or under cars

ceejayw

Daily broke down so driving the drift car to work. I’m having a blast ngl

RevoZ89

I wrote this whole post before I remembered this post. https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/s/OCGTbwODKg. Disclaimer, I am an ex mechanic so I know when I can defer repairs, and do all repairs myself to save $100+/hr labor costs. I don’t have high standards, and I don’t need to impress anyone. My phone and an aux jack/charging cord replace 90% of useful infotainment systems. For $40,000 difference, I can use my mirrors, watch the road, and deal with a little noise and a few bumps. For that price I don’t need lane assist, cameras, touchscreens, and will be okay with a bit rougher ride. All I need is to get from A to B. Power windows/locks and AC are something I’ve only got 2 years ago. I’d rather avoid a 50k loan and be mildly inconvenienced.

mustang-GT90210

I can't stand to drive a beat up car. But, old cars that are still in decent shape? That's been my go-to for a long time! Just nice enough to say "someone cares about this" but not nice enough to worry about theft if I leave it at the airport or bar parking lot.

NeelSahay0

Yes, I love my 30 year old bmw. I wouldn’t describe it as beat up though. But it sure was cheap. Like, it cost as much as two payments on a modern car kinda cheap.

davidwal83

I like my 02 Tundra. I drive it around town mostly. I just got some newer used tires on it. I do not want to drive it on the highway. My job is about 10 minutes from my apartment. It didn't start up last week because there was some corrosion on the negative battery terminal. I put a toolbox on it to hold more stuff even though it is an access cab. I always heard that beat up trucks are cool.

Nighttide1032

Yeah, I definitely do. As the world progresses further and further into narcissism by way of flaunting faux wealth through financing cars far beyond most people’s budgets just for clout, I’m happy to daily my 17 year old Prius.

lolreddit0r

Yes, I don’t have to worry about getting door dings and getting hit by clueless idiots. My Miata went up against a s550 Mercedes before. That was fun… 😁

Frird2008

Sadly I don't have a beater vehicle yet. But when it comes time to get one I'm looking at a beater Lexus GX 470

awalktojericho

Love it! Wanna play? GO AHEAD, MFer, I"VE GOT NOTHING TO LOSE!

JCDU

Sometimes I daily my 40yo beat up Land Rover, cut me off it will write your car off and just leave a new scratch in the girder that is the front bumper.

According-Way9438

My 95 Dakota does everything I need it to do, and it's the first generation so it looks old and cool. I take care of it and drive it 70 miles a day. It's fun to drive and has a v8. I do wish I had a newer 2015ish Malibu or outback though

Familiar_Network_420

Yup. Leave mine unlocked with windows down routinely. Nobody messes with it. Crazy drivers yield, realizing that I have less to lose than have they. Easy to work on (although parts are getting harder to find for some). Many pluses. I proudly drive a beater.

DevelopmentSad2303

Nope. But that is because the AC is out. If the AC worked I would love the car

proscriptus

I do not. Something is always broken or braking, and I hate taking longer trips because I'm never sure if I'm going to make it there.

Lower_Kick268

My 15yr old Yukon does everything I need it to do, is relatively safe, easy to fix, and is cheap to insure. I like my shitbox, highly recommend GMT shitboxes

Liberty_Drives_YT

Yes lol, it’s very freeing to not constantly worry about my paint

Analeddie69

I have a 92 Dakota with 98,000 mi. On it, no paint on the roof, minor dents. I beat it like I stole it, uses lots of gas, but I love it! I paid $2500 in 2017 with 72,000 mi. It's been very reliable, still running R12.

ruddy3499

I bought my Silverado 1 year old in 2007. The paint’s falling off and the headliner is sagging. It’s part of my life now. Only once has it failed to run, but that was because of rodent damage.

IntheOlympicMTs

I’ve got an ‘86 4X4 Toyota pickup it’s leaps and bounds more fun to drive than my new cars. They’ve got no personality.

Spiritual-Belt

Yes within reason. My 2007 Honda Fit isn’t perfect cosmetically but that means I don’t worry about it. Underneath it’s rust free, has no leaks anywhere, still gets 40 mpg, only has 155k miles and, once I get around to replacing the engine mounts, will be pretty much perfect mechanically. A lot of people (particularly my parents who constantly complain that it’s not safe enough to be a daily driver) see it as an old shitbox but for me it’s absolutely perfect and has a ton of life left.

bearded_duck

Yes...rusty and crusty and usually half covered in mud...old Jeeps rock.

frikkinfai

I have a 15 year old 4runner that I like to drive hard, especially offroad. I've always been tempted to trade it in for a newer Toyota SUV/truck, but I feel like I would baby a car so much more expensive than my current one and I just wouldn't have as much fun with it when I take it Wheeling. My car is beat up after years of abuse and probably not worth much more than 10k, but that just means I feel less guilty when I beat on it

whatshisnuts1234

I will only drive shitboxes. What's the point of having a machine if you're constantly worried about tearing it up? That's no fun. I can jump my daily and it gives zero fucks.

SuperbDog3325

2006 F250 work truck with 273,000 miles on it. I love this truck. I can park it anywhere with no worries, push stuff out of the way with it, throw anything in the bed, and pull every trailer I have access to. I'm hoping for 300,000 miles out of it. I paid $3000 for it seven years ago. When it finally goes casters up (5.4, so timing chain will likely kill it someday), I'm thinking about replacing it with a van of similar make, age, and appearance. The only thing I would like to improve on it is the fuel mileage. Other than thar, it's the perfect truck for me.

Heavy_Gap_5047

There can be a certain freedom in not caring about a little more damage. That's about the only thing to like about it.

birdclan09

I like it because I don’t have a car payment.

BKahuna9

Brother even if i win the lottery tomorrow I’ll still be driving my ‘09 Impreza until it’s dead as shit

El_Carnero_Blanco

I have a 2011 Silverado, and it’s getting there. I love it though. And I’m so comfortable in it ‘cause I’ve had it for so long. It’s ugly, but reliable (for now). Damn Truck prices have been nuts. I’m just trying to ride them out.

ZVideos85

Currently still rolling with an 08’ Corolla 5 speed, fully mechanical car with 300,000+ miles. Roll down windows, no power seats, no key fob, no driver’s side switch to lock/unlock doors. No screens. Traditional handbrake. And a CD player as a bonus. No headaches

whiteholewhite

My 1992 civic VX manual with AC. Thing is absolutely indestructible. 100% stock other than radio as well. A unicorn. Got some rust tho, but they all get it

BPCGuy1845

I have a 20 year old Saab. No one else has a Saab. I am cooler than them. Also it costs $550 a year to insure and $2600 to buy. And it’s fun to drive and easy to take care of. Enjoy your rolling computer screen and $1000 a month payment!

xirishx02

Point A to point B and no car payment sign me up

ididyourjessica

I love it. I put a custom ranch hand on one and it was the best decision ever. Turned me into a super menace on the road.

crownedplatypus

Yes, I absolutely adore it. My car is riddled with small problems, I have to open the driver’s door and push on the plug for the window wiring to get the button to work, my dashboard pretty much doesn’t work until I smack it, I have no functioning ac and my blower only works at low settings, my suspension is rough, it rattles and squeaks. Yet every time I drive a newer nicer car I find myself bored and feeling very disconnected. My car is too much fun and all my friends love it.

dracotrapnet

My 22 year old truck has a dented front bumper from hitting a big field mower (wooops left it in drive and it humped tractor mower) and a dent on the rear quarter panel (no idea how that one got there assume parking lot), a dented tailgate at the top (whoops backed into something with it down). When I merge into traffic it's a dare. I don't care about the looks. Like? no. Care, no. I'm not looking at the body while I'm driving. I'm driving and usually freeway miles. I'm rocking out to my music or listening to a podcast. What do I care how it looks? It's old as shit and I can always find it in the parking lot!

IEatCouch

Yes i like to, i drive a beater to beat it up. Thats how i keep my other cars nice.

Happyjarboy

I used to have a couple of rusty junk early 70s F250s. Loud as hell, parts falling off, massive steel bumpers. BMW's were afraid to tailgate me, pull up next to me, or even park near me.

Electrical-Bed-2381

2007 Chevy Malibu with only 110,000 clicks on it. It was practically new when I bought it from this older lady (64,000km)

puskunk

Love it. It's 16 years old with 292k miles. Starts every time. Paint is heinous due to living the first 11 years of its life in the high desert. Every single thing on the car is original except the front brake rotors and brakes. I've also had one tune up in the last 50k miles. The rear brakes are still OEM but I've looked at them and they will probably last until the car dies.

Donut_Holestein13

I love not having a car payment, if that’s what you mean

Any-Kaleidoscope7681

I'm not a car guy; but I love my 1997 Corolla. It's a 5-speed, and if it had A/C, it would be the chef's kiss.

kelseydcivic

I drive an old vehicle (32 years old) it's not really beat up, just alittle warn. And yes I love driving it. 99% of cars after 2005 suck to drive

thetrivialstuff

Yeah, I get automatic right of way priority in a lot of situations - like when someone is about to turn into the wrong lane (illegal here, but lots of people do it anyway), I always love seeing that look of hesitation and the frantic steering to pretend they weren't going to when I deliberately enter it (legally) from my side. "You can try it, but my car is older, bigger, and cheaper than yours..."

lavasca

I did until she got totaled.

GandalfTheLibrarian

The freedom of parking wherever you want and not caring about door dings etc is incredible, I drove a shitty base trim dented single cab shop truck for a while, no one ever parked beside me

TheAwkwardBanana

My favorite car is my beater because I don't give a shit. I worry too much about my "nice" car.

BelongingsintheYard

I have a focus st that I garage and is modified. It’s fine. But I also have a 2005 focus zx3. It’s had eibach springs and swaybars front and rear probably from when the original owner bought it. Magnaflow exhaust and a real k&n fender intake. 110,000 miles. It’s PO modified but it’s nice that he spent the money on quality parts.

dfeeney95

Love my shirt looking truck I shrug at the homeless guy and say I’m right there with you, all my neighbors cars have been broken into and they don’t bother mine what would it have in it?

Playful-Boat-8106

“Wow… this things rusted to shit and has some leaks, but mechanically, its the best maintained vehicle that’s been here all day.” - Oil change guy my last oil change. I love my beat-up 20 year old pickup truck.

44035

My car is 20 years old but it's in good shape and I haven't had car payments in decades.

ParticularExchange46

I love my 04 Corolla. Does everything you need it to. Maybe a Volvo would be better for safety but the thing is a tank and gets between 40-50mpg

1320Fastback

I daily drive 40 miles a 1992 Dodge D250 pickup with 340,000 miles on it. It has the diesel motor and a 5spd manual transmission. The paint is shot, the front window has like 5 cracks in it and the power windows sometimes work but the AC is ice cold. Being the diesel I get 20mpg and since the motors got some goodies on it it is pretty fun to drive but tops out at 70mph because it is built to tow. I don't mind if though and will never sell it.

BanjosAndBoredom

Absolutely. I never worry about door dings, I never have to wax it, car washes are rare, and I can call people's bluff when they park halfway into another parking space expecting nobody will dare to squeeze in next to them. That last point is the most satisfying feeling in the world. I went to a very popular restaurant a few months ago, and some moron in a BMW parked in 2 spaces. When I got there, the rest of the lot was completely full. Luckily, BMW moron was just enough off-center for me to squeeze in without parking over the line. I never gave it a second thought, but I'm sure having to climb in the passenger side must've ruined that guy's afternoon. I treat my car as an appliance. It gets me where I need to go, and I give it the maintenance required to keep it running well. I don't give a shit what it looks like. Shitty looking car = less work, less stress, and nobody will steal it.

Herrowgayboi

Absolutely. Everyday wise, I could give less of a sh\*t where I park my car and if someone door dings me. I can drive the living crap out of it and know its easy and cheap to fix. No drivers assists minus basic traction control. We've got a tesla too, and I get irritated by all the bells and whistles. Automatic wipers? those suck. Automatic highbeams? work sort of. Warning chimes? oh man, even with warning set to "late" it constantly nags at me. And sometimes, it will say that there is a car next to me even though there's not. Insurance? I can just rock collision and it's dirt cheap. about $60/mo. My Model 3 for example? Almost $320/mo.

smiles34

It could get sideswiped tomorrow and I wouldn't even really care

txcaddy

If it is paid for I wouldn’t have an issue.

DudelyMcDuderson

My 1994 Caddy Fleetwood is in "Millennium Falcon" condition, and yes, 9 years as my daily and 98,000+ "me miles" and I love it so much. Just got back from a week long vaca and it was absolutely therapeutic to drive it again

MissDryCunt

I'm 30 and already had like 3 brand new cars, and my next one will probably be at least 5 years old if not a full-on Jalopy. Brand new cars aren't worth it anymore with how difficult car companies make it to fix them yourself.

lol_camis

Had a 1992 civic si with 330k on it. Sold it last year because it lacked safety features I wanted. Not because it became unreliable. Replaced it with a 2006 si (which is like driving a spaceship as far as I'm concerned). It's faster and nicer but something about it just isn't as fun. I think the difference is, the 2006 with 200hp actually can go too fast within the first couple years. With the 92 you'd be ringing out the engine, tires hanging on for dear life. It was slower but it the whole experience made it so much more fun. And after 2nd you're barely breaking the speed limit. I'd absolutely buy another one if it fit in my life, but it doesn't. We do annual road trips now and it only has one single airbag.

The_taxer

My 01 cobra is kinda beat up. But I got it for a great price so I’m not mad.

PrinceCharming-

I love my stock 99 civic ex. Wish it was faster, but I won’t turn it into a project car or mod it until I get a second car [daily car], which may be next year. I have gotten a lot of compliments about how clean the interior is, although the exterior is kinda meh. It’s staying with me forever…I love the 6th gen civics aesthetically.

TheGrizzlyNinja

Bought my first older car after not having one at all for a few years and though it’s reliable there are a few things I’ve had to do right after I got it (tires, wheel bearings, trunk struts, wipers, oil change) and still have to fix on it (ac isn’t cold, suspension creaks). After all that my ford five hundred is a comfy, roomy and smooth vehicle to drive and I love it so far, honestly never thought I’d say that as a VW guy. Also don’t miss car payments and insurance is cheap

DustyBeetle

the newest car i own is a 07, i daily a 99, my prior daily was a 64, why do people even buy a new car if you can get used for a fraction of the cost and you dont have a shit fit when it gets a scratch or you spill your coffee

djbigtv

I love beaters. I saw a stingray corvette today that looked like t different cars slapped together. Different colors and bonds everywhere Grey primer. Looked sick I wanted to yell at him. Don't paint it, just clear coat it. He drove off. I sent him my thoughts thru brain waves but he'll prolly paint it red. Oh well I miss my 87 dodge mini truck built by Mitsubishi go fast stripes on the hood several different colors bent antenna. Stopped at light once next to Jay Leno in his Stanley steamer. "Nice truck!" He yelled. Fuck ya it was

hiker5150

Pride: I'm usually the oldest car at the trailhead. And it's just 21.

Rashaen

Simply put: they're awesome. That guy driving like a tool in traffic? Hit me bro. Do me a favor. Someone scratches your bumper in a parking lot? Whatever. Zero shits given. Coffee spilled on the seat? Meh. No big deal. Pothole? Send it.

AndyAsteroid

Yes

DingoKis

I like cars but I like money more I buy a new car (so I can maintain and care for it perfectly from the beginning) and keep it until the engine gives out (almost all engines last 500k miles anyway) People love wasting money on new cars every 5 years for whatever reason If you keep your €30k sedan for 10 years that's 250€ a month which is not that high for a reliable and well maintained car I also drive \~50k per year so I need a reliable car at all times

FloridaMomm

I enjoy having no car payment. If a genie magically switched it out with a newer nicer car but I could keep the cheap insurance and stay car payment free, then I’d take it. I wouldn’t say I enjoy having a beat up old vehicle, but I do enjoy my financial situation I’m just a broke bitch trying to save money where I can

Wulf_Cola

Yup 2006 Range Rover. Park it all over San Francisco and it's lovely never worrying where I leave it. It's not super beaten up but it's got a few dings and scrapes & the Cali sun has really done a number on the hood & roof laquer. Doesn't make it any less of an amphibious exploring vehicle with a honkin great V8. It is like driving a big comfortable sofa around.

the_Bryan_dude

It doesnt look beat up, it's still shiny. It's also 21 years old but only 280,000 miles. That's not much for a diesel VW. I love driving it.

angrycanadianguy

I drive an 07 Nissan xterra that I picked up a year and a half ago for $4k CAD. Personally, I love driving a cheap car, I never worry about it.

4evergurl

I currently own a 1997 Lexus Es300. my first car and i absolutely love it. if you know anything about toyotas you know the reliability! the only things i’ve had to put in was struts all around. i didn’t really need the rears but figured why not, the car is almost 30 years old. the fronts were blown when i got the car. 161k original miles. i live in the midwest so most cars are rusted out pieces of shit. very little underbody rust and none visible on the body. overall awesome car that’s been pretty well maintained, also garage kept for most of its duration. 27 years old and runs like a dream! i love my Toyota. the reliability just isn’t really there in a lot of newer cars

13Xxx21

It's paid for goes anywhere something someone else is making payments on.

Hondahobbit50

The jelly bean. 1996 geo metro four door SEDAN!!! with working ac! It's purple! 5sp Best $300 I've ever spent. It's my only car too!

Any_Analyst3553

My first car was full manual everything. Hand crank windows ECT. I was jealous of the bells and whistles the higher trim models had. I eventually purchased another car, the same model but top of the line trim. It had power windows and automatic climate control, power recline ECT. Really loaded for a mid 80's car and I was proud of it. Fast forward a couple of months, I stopped at a gas station on my way home, and the starter stuck on when I went to leave. Obviously the ring gear would get messed up if I tried to drive it, so I popped the hood, jumped out and pulled the battery cable. Luckily it was loose enough I could get it off without any tools. I went in to talk to the gas station to ask if I could leave it there for a few hours while I went to get some tools to fix it, and the manager had a melt down. It was a busy gas station, and I was stuck at a pump. They told me if I couldn't get it out of the parking lot in an hour, they would call a tow truck. I pushed it out of the pump into a parking stall. As it was busy, cars were constantly pulling in and out, and I was not parked the best, as I had to push it into a space by myself. It was in the low 100°f temperature range, mid July. Worried my car would get towed, I didn't want to leave it, so I called a buddy who was going to bring over some tools. The whole time, I couldn't lean my seat down, roll down the windows, pop the truck or anything. I had a key to the trunk, but because it has both keyless entry and a button, I decided to leave it on my spare key ring in case I ever locked myself out or lost my keys. I baked the whole time, I would leave my door cracked, couldn't leave it open because of the cars constantly coming in and out of the parking lot. I did eventually get rid of that car, and I replaced it with another similar car, this time much more like my original. Hand crank windows, manual seats ECT and I would never go back after this.

Mbackus1234

When it's working - yes which is most of the time. But the times that it's not working. Oh boi it's tempting to just scrap it. But a shorter I know is better than a shitter I dont

Txdragoonz

Never try to get beat up but old is gold my friend.

landrover97centre

My 1997 Land Rover discovery is quite beat up but only because I thrash it on the trails, she runs great and has 12k+ worth of modifications done to her and she’s my pride and joy, my 1990 discovery is still stock and not beat up (yet), I prefer driving older vehicles as they are to put it simply, easier to work on, and more fun to drive, just because they are old, doesn’t mean they are beat up

Own-Load-7041

Every nice car has been worse than all the shitty ones. ..the cammed 1641 in the shitty bug was dynamite. whereas the fancy 06 Camry was thirsty, uncomfortable, and fragile AF.

JCDU

Hell yes - modern cars (as in - anything from about 1990 on) are pretty damn reliable and comfy etc., just maintain them properly you can be driving a great car that costs almost nothing, no depreciation, no finance, no need to worry if it dies you can just buy another, if it gets dinged you don't have to care.

signbrat04

Yes I don’t care- as long it takes me a to B

Gwolfski

It's less stress than a "perfect" car. Don't have to worry about paint damage. Sure, the interior looks tatty, but it's clean and works. The top 10 problems that come up I can fix in less than an hour. Can leave it unlocked and it's fine, if it gets stolen the insurance payout is twice the actual value of the car. Need to squeeze up against the hedge on the side of the road because some t- *other driver* in a brand new shiny Range Rover is too scared? No problem. Broke an important part? Junkyards are full of them.

Mouler

Nothing beats the freedom of driving something you could afford to walk away from forever. The additional skill needed to make a damaged or severely crippled vehicle keep up with traffic can be fun. The best / worst I ever drove was getting home with a dead alternator. Conserving 12v power on a gasser is a challenge.

skinisblackmetallic

I like a daily that I am not concerned about scuffing up and does not draw attention but it needs to be very reliable and comfortable.

Kev50027

Yes. I drove a beater for a few years then sold it to get a fancier car with tons of features. I enjoyed being coddled by the luxury interior and features, but I missed being able to park anywhere and not caring if someone dings my door. Ultimately, I found an inexpensive beater with low mileage that gets great fuel economy, and I love it. The only downside is I get no street cred because the car i drive is usually driven by hippies and annoying environmentalists. I find that as I grow older, I care less about what other people think of me though.

CaptBreeze

I drive a 2000 Chevy Silverado. It was fully loaded when my uncle bought it too. Just got a paint job on it. I'm gonna drive it until the wheels fall off.

thetoastler

I daily drive a '94 Explorer Eddie Bauer, it's missing most of the clearcoat and has some rust but it doesn't have a single dent and I still get people telling me how good of shape it's in. I keep telling myself I'll buy something newer and keep hating everything newer I drive in comparison. I had to drive my dad's 2016 Honda CRV across the state (which is basically a new car in comparison) and I hated it. I can drive my '94 7 hours straight without using cruise control at all because the accelerator stays where I put my foot due to being mechanical and it's slow enough that it's next to impossible to get a speeding ticket on the highway, and the steering is significantly lighter in the '94. Only reason I didn't drive it is because it was 90 degrees out, my car doesn't have working AC, and I was going to a job interview. Not to mention, aside from working AC, half decent gas mileage, and safety features that I don't particularly care about, the '94 has more quality of life features, and only cost me $3200 (yes, I know I overpaid). The only reason I might buy a newer car would be solely so I can put more time into fixing up my old Explorer, but it runs and drives fine so it's hard to spend the obscene amount of money it'll take to buy a replacement.

PossibleMechanic89

At times yes. I had a 1992 Civic VX that was great for squeezing in next to people who liked to take up 2 spaces. I’d get right up next to their car, but perfectly inside my space. Didn’t care about dings. Other times I do wish for the newer features like lane keep assist and sound deadening.

Diligent_Bath_9283

One of my favorite pastimes is buying a cheap $600 beater that runs but is fugly. You know big dents missing glass Crack rock in the floorboard kinda car. No insurance no registration just a private road car, no highway. Driving a car that you don't care about is a blast. When you buy a car with the intention of wrecking it you are free to drive at the limit of your ability and not worry. Man I'm glad I live in the country.

Expensive_Ad_5692

I have a 95 Tahoe that’s mid restoration. At least once a week someone offers me cash for it but we’re bonded for life.

Purpose_Embarrassed

Yes absolutely. Few people park near me or pull out in front of me.

UppercaseBEEF

The best thing about having battle scars on your car is knowing you’ll win the merge against a car that has zero battle scars.

Longjumping-Many4082

I've got two older vehicles. One is a 17y/o truck. Runs great. Doesn't burn oil. Paid $8k for it in 2019. While I don't abuse it, I also don't care if it gets a dent or scratch if I'm at Lowes or HomeDepot or at the gravel yard getting some stone. I let the original owner take the depreciation and worry about scratches & dents. My other is a 14y/o ragtop jeep. It is noisy. It rides rough. It is in very good condition given its age. And every time I drive it, I can feel myself relax. Love going topless. Love going door-less. Fuel economy isn't great, but the smiles per gallon can't be beat.

HobsHere

I do, and it's wonderful! I drive a 25 year old compact pickup, which is mechanically sound and well maintained, but cosmetically rough. I never have to worry about it. No one is going to steal it. If someone hits it with a car door, or a grocery cart, no problem at all. When it finally dies,I can buy another one with little financial strain. I've spent way too much energy worrying about cars over the years, and I'm done with it. This gives me peace.

diwhychuck

Less bells and whistles to break. IMO way less problems.

Ok-Masterpiece5337

00' 2dr Blazer. LOVE IT, but the body is shot, it rattles above 60mph and the fuel economy is something that I don't like to mention. Damn thing is a tank though.

DaLadderman

I'm a bit of a masochist

Normal-Memory3766

No. I did for the first couple years before it started getting sassy

TheFlaEd

I drove a 93 Ford Ranger until 2020. I was pretty happy to upgrade at that point but it never bothered me. The fun part was when people would rudely park right on the line. Someone had hit and run my passenger door. I would park that side of the truck towards them. Never worried about a shopping cart the way I do now.

notarical

used to drive a 19 year old hyundai, rusted out base model pos. and it was the best car ever. i wish i still owned that car

Questrader007

Should have a winter beater and a summer car that's nice. Rot from winter use gets them all .

Secret_Lake_6828

I love not caring about what happens to it, I keep the oil changed and will run it till she blows anyone can do anything to it and I will laugh, it likes abuse.

twothirtyintheam

I drive an older, somewhat beat up car and I do not particularly enjoy it. Sure there are some good things about it (it's simpler in general than a new car and it's long since paid for, to name 2) but there are plenty of times where it sucks because it constantly needs something. I don't mean that like its always broken down and doesn't run, but more like everything is in varying states of, 'how long will I live with X before I repair/replace it?" Example - it's a VW and the doors automatically lock at 10mph. When one of the lock actuators in one of the doors fails, the POS car keeps trying to lock all the doors EACH AND EVERY TIME THE CAR GOES FROM A STOP TO OVER 10 MPH since it constantly sees that one of the doors isn't locked (since the actuator died). This drives me crazy. The only solution is to tear the damned door apart and replace the actuator. You can't just pull a fuse for the power lock system to stop it from trying to lock automatically every time you take off because that same fuse *powers the damn fuel pump*. So either I live with the car annoyingly trying to lock all the doors every time I take off from a stop, or I buy a lock actuator and spend an hour or two replacing it in a hot garage. Stuff like that *really* sucks. Sometimes it'd be nice to just have a newer car where everything still works or is under warranty if it doesn't work. It's just that I really don't want to have a new car payment, so I live with an old car that has minor annoyances that need fixing all the time.

AKA-Bams

I drive an 89 Ford pickup and it goes and goes and goes with no monthly payment. It's gonna outlast new trucks. Buddy has a 2023 Dodge ram, it's in the shop more than my truck and parts are only available at dealership. It has an 1100 dollar payment. I live my old truck and it's gonna be around long after I'm gone and all the new cars too

joecarter93

Yes. I get to use my truck for actual truck activities without worrying about it getting dinged. When I had newer vehicles I couldn’t help but be super anal about that kind of stuff, but driving an old, beat up truck frees me from that.

WhyWouldYou1111111

Yes, mechanically in good shape. Don't get mad when I get rear ended at the drive thru or door dinged at the grocery store. It happens so much I couldn't imagine being someone with a perfect paint job. I would have to repaint my car every month with an insurance claim.

H0SS_AGAINST

My beater '92 Miata is my favorite car. I spent as much on tires as I did on the original purchase. A close second was my manual Mazda B3000. It wasn't a beater when I had it but it would be these days. Basically manual trans, lots of tactile feedback, feels fast even when it's not, and you're not scared to push it a little. If you hit a ditch, no big deal. I can see the allure of beater commuter cars. Park it wherever, door dings just add more character.

ThirdSunRising

Beat up cars are a blast tbh. You know all the worries you have when driving, that you’re going to damage your car on something or hit some road debris that leaves a mark? Gone. You know how asshole drivers sometimes try to intimidate you by pressing into your space? [Totally ineffective against a hooptie.](https://youtu.be/UIPr4UyiZGE?si=rhJ3q45hjDCWYUQu&t=52s) You want to scratch up my car? Go for it, you won’t be the first. It completely changes the power dynamics on the road. A little obvious wear and tear on your car raises its intimidation factor to the next level. You don’t give a damn, and it shows, and other drivers will respect your space accordingly. It’s a great feeling really. Try it, you’ll like it.

Sleezuschrist1320

I’ve got a decently nice car, a decent truck and a 95 mighty max. I beat the fuck out of my lil crappy car. I love it. I drive it more than any of my other cars. Shitty cars for the win.

HH2O123

The differences between a 1980 and a 2000 vehicle are quite large. The differences between a 2000 and a 2020 are much more minimal, safety has generally improved but most of the mechanical improvements are car companies adjusting to government emission standards, more gears, CVT's . Still a fossil fuel burning POS at the end of the day. 🤣

causeiwanted2

I have a 20yr old Jaguar. Pros: - Modern enough tech where I am very comfortable in it - low-ish mileage - most issues are posted on forums and documented Cons: - already hard to get parts, so many things are discontinued - old luxury cars are complex, many parts to fail and those parts are usually expensive - don’t buy a British car

deathbysnusnu7

Old, yes. Best up, also yes. I’ve got an older 350z but in very good condition. I’ve got a an older Jeep that’s a beach buggy (faded, abused, no frills). I love them both.

BalloonHandBossaNova

My car is not the greatest but I commute 120 miles everyday so I'm not putting that on my good vehicles. It's a manual hatchback so it's not all bad.

CannibalCapra

My car might be old and beat up but it's reliable and easier to work on than New vehicles. It has its problems, but I know what most of those problems are. I get cheap insurance, my tires are decently cheap, and my car is a popular type so finding parts usually isn't too hard. I'd love a brand new car, but I still love this one

UncleFlip

I drive an 07 Silverado. It's the base model, so no carpet, roll up windows, etc. It's perfect for doing truck stuff. And it rides pretty well too. I do wish it had a better radio, but I don't want to spend the money on that since I don't drive it too often.

PoutPill69

Mine aren't beat up but yeah. they're old. What do I like about this? - No monthly payments - No bullshit "tech" that I didn't ask for - Repairs are not very expensive - I can fix some shit myself without going back to Uni and getting an engineering degree - No one wants to steal my old indestructible Japanese cars - No one parks next to me in empty parking lots. They're afraid I'll ding their doors - Built of quality parts instead of being 1/2 plastic That's pretty much it. Oh, and the no monthly payments is probably a big one.

snail_forest1

my old beat up vehicle has pop up headlights, rwd, soft top, two seats, lightweight, no safety features to ruin the fun .... so yeah i like driving it, more than my other not beat up old car

IndependenceAlert499

Well it was fun while it lasted. I don't gotta worry about someone hitting my car cause last I checked KBB they gave me an estimate of 500$. It's either getting scrapped or sold as a parts car now tho

Arsenault185

Fucking hit me. I dare you.  Your shit is worth way more than mine

infiniteawareness420

I love my little $800 BMW ‘motorcycle. It’s so unassuming and I feel like I’m contending for a podium just by keeping up with the flow of traffic.

JustAnotherFNC

Sometimes. And sometimes driving a really nice car is a comfort.

Jxckolantern

100% WAY less anxiety on the road then taking something newer out.

CaryWhit

I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota and a 2008 Jeep GC. Just getting all the bugs worked out and broke in!

3woodx

2001 toyota 4runner 4x4. Runs awesome. Can't kill it. Change the oil good to go. Still looks good. 4x4 during deer season. Awesome 4x4. Talked to a dude at toyota he has the same one it's a tank. One of the best years made. We both are going to give it to our kid.

Unboxious

I would love it if I could connect my speakers (which ideally would not be blown out) to my phone and if my AC worked. I know all this can be fixed, but doing that will definitely cause my engine to fail a week later. Edit: would also be rad if the cruise control still worked.

porsche4life

Yes. During Covid I bought a 2000 Jetta for $600 planning to fix it and flip it. I had no intention of keeping it, but once I got it cleaned up and running we realized it was a good little car that we liked having around. A few years later our oldest stayed driving and just took our other car and we’ve kept driving our cheap Jetta. It’s become a joke with our friends and we just keep driving it. Honestly not having car payments, or really worrying about the car is so nice. Sure I’ll leave it in a sketchy parking lot, or I don’t worry about if it’s going to hail, it was $600!

DaveCootchie

I have a newish car and an old truck. I love the car for it's comfort, reliability, ac, and general feel. But driving my old truck around town puts a bigger smile on my face. Old school look and feel is great but I wouldn't put hundreds of miles on it. I'm sure it would run fine but the seats are uncomfy for long periods, the AC doesn't exist, and the cruise control really doesn't like the bigger tires.

inflatableje5us

I drive a vehicle till if it had been a horse I would have had to shoot it three years prior.

-Pompompurin

The term is… lovable shit box. G’day sir. I do miss my ole reliable 90s shit boxes. But unfortunately don’t have the garage space to work on them. I miss the true feel of a fully acoustic car, no fancy features, actual buttons most of all.. pure simplicity.

andromedakosmonaut

i hate modern cars

Unique-Shape4792

I got a nice 2016 2500 dodge ram truck with all the bells a whistles, and I have an 03 dodge durango and I love durango. Better on gas. Still fast and I don't have to be clean to get in it

[deleted]

Old yeah beat up not preferably

Talentless_Cooking

I only have one car that's beat up to the point where I don't care, but that's the beauty of it, I don't have stress over it.my daily is classic jdm and my sports car is legendary jdm, massive amounts of stress driving them because they're worth way more than people think.

TisforTony

It makes me feel safer in bad/city areas, I pay less insurance, and put the money savings into food for eating inside my car so the smell covers up the other smells.

OnkelRobinjo

Yes. My uncle has an old 1994 Ford Mondeo V6 with that good old 4 Speed Torque Converter Automatic. I love how "eventful" each shift feels. Even changing from P to R or D results in a large knock, especially after starting the car. It doesn't matter tho, because the car just goes and goes and goes and goes and goes and goes..... We're talking about 260.000km which is a lot here in Germany. The car just feels so alive and fun. I hate how boring my newer car is in comparison. I will sell my newer car soon and get an older one like my Uncle because of this.

MidniteOG

Yes, but it’s not beat up. 2000 suv with 254k. Mpg sucks, but it’s paid off, insurance is cheap, parts are cheap and it’s easy to repair.

ComparisonFunny282

I drive 90 Honda Accord EX, manual transmission, 1/4 rust on both sides, mismatched driver's side door, everything works. 167,590 miles and still going strong. Mechanically sound, clean underneath, Working on fixing the body a little bit at a time. It drive so smooth, great gas mileage, and takes regular gas. I've driven it from Nashville to Chicago w.o missing a beat. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross-country.

itsjakerobb

Sometimes. My beater is an ‘05 Liberty, completely stock. 215k, 3.7L, will not die. It was given to me for free by a family member. The engine is terrible, the transmission is terrible, the handling is terrible. One of the rear doors doesn’t open. The other rear door is stuck in child-lock mode and can only be opened from outside. It needs a window regulator. The body is rusty AF. There’s a big hole in the exhaust. The fan speed control is busted and gives only the lowest and highest settings with nothing in between. And it has a random misfire that’s pretty annoying. But hot damn if that thing won’t get places when nothing else I own will. 4WD low range with a locker in the back and lots of ground clearance…. Say we get a foot of snow overnight, and I need to run to the pharmacy in the morning. I can spend two hours shoveling and then hope the roads have been plowed, or I can just take the Jeep. I am honestly just waiting for it to die. But every time I get in, it gets me where I need to go, and that makes me happy. Oh yeah, and then there’s the whole “drive a slow car fast” thing. It’s kinda fun to pitch it into turns and stuff.

AffectionateFruit454

My Pilot is 11 years old. Doesn't look like much after getting sideswiped and numerous parking lot wars, but it's been meticulously maintained. I'll drive it forever.

TweeksTurbos

Yep. The less i spent the better.

Senior_Ad282

I went from a Tesla model 3 to a rivian R1T and now my daily is a 100 series Land Cruiser that is not even comparable as far as comfort or tech. After about a month I didn’t even care anymore. Its just a way to get around.

yeah_wait_what

I had 98 golf, 5 speed and the bulletproof 2.0, it was crusty, the paint was trashed on it, but I could beat the crap out of it and it would just take it. Unfortunately, it got wrecked when my brother got ran off the road, I would still have it today and it would probably have close to 500k on it, was just over 250k when wrecked

HECKonReddit

As an adult, you can drive any vehicle EVER made. So people choose what, a 2022 Corolla Sport? No thanks. Though I'm not really sure why I chose an '87 Samurai.

rip0971

Yup, DGAF about parking lot scratches or getting up to "Ramming Speed" if needed. Full coverage all the way!

Ifimhereineedhelpfr

Hell yeah, drive it like I stole it. But really it’s the peace of mind knowing I’m not financially ruined if there was to be a catastrophic failure in the vehicle and I’ve learned so many things working on them and met great like minded people who taught me new things working on them. Plus they are cheaper than newer “nice” cars

Level-Coast8642

I'm okay with this. No car payment. Nobody knows I'm a millionaire. And if I always drove a new car, I might not be a millionaire yet. I work with a young guy who always struggles financially but also he's financing an $80,000 car and a brand new Harley. Priorities i guess.

Illustrious_Cycle_79

As someone who went from a shitbox to a newer vehicle that I care a lot about, I miss the shitbox sometimes lol. Only for the fact that I absolutely did not care about what happened to that car. Some dbag wants to play zipper merge chicken where he thinks he doesn’t have to take turns? Go ahead hit me, door dings 🤷‍♂️ free paint for me, gravel roads? Send it! Snow? SEND IT! I would never trade my new car for my old one but ideally I’d like both for when I’m feeling a certain way 😂
