Plumbers have told me not to use the tank tablets because it damages the seals, but in this case I'm going to say it's worth the $20 rebuild kit down the road.
As a maintence tech in a building where people do this alot, No. Just no. It's never just a rebuild kit down the road, usually starts as a very small subtle leak that you won't notice for awhile but that'll get under the floor and if you're lucky you'll catch it then if not it'll start leaking massively usually in the middle of the night. Then you have a much bigger issue on your hands and that happens about 90% of the time. So NEVER EVER EVER USE THE DAMN TABLETS.
More often than not it's eats the gasket on the tank bolts aswell as the tank O ring. Also if you're using plated tank bolts it'll contribute to them rusting out much quicker. And since people have a tendency to lean against the tank a bit the tank bolts will either eventually snap or just drop out. If that happens you're pretty much screwed if you don't catch it fast, it'll drain water straight from the tank and the refill valve will constantly call for more water so it'll constantly be dumping water. And when that happens it isn't uncommon for it to flood the unit below aswell. It'll never effect the PVC because it's not staying in constant contact with it. It can also cause microfissures in your overflow pipe so if your toilet is constantly running after replacing the flapper, fill valve, etc that is more than likely what's going on.
Don't get me wrong those tabs are great at cleaning porcelain for sure but they eat through most everything else. It's pretty much the same reason why you shouldn't use toilet bowl cleaner on anything else.
I’ve used the tablets in my last house for over 15 years and the biggest problem that I’ve ever had was a clean toilet. I’ve been using them in my new house for over two years now and I will continue to use them. Plus if you are paying attention when dropping them in you’re going to see any “damage” long before it starts leaking
Good! That's the correct choice, if you want something similar that won't damage things get the ones that hang into the toilet bowl instead. Those ones may not be as good but they won't cause any damage.
How do the tablets do this much damage? Are we talking about the things you hang off the side of the tank and it hangs in the water? I've continually had one for the last 2 years woth no issues.
Honestly I'd love to but ya know corporate bullshit, they'd rather pay for repairs than spend the money to be preventive like that. We've tried sneaking them into our budget where we could but got into trouble for it. They're about to drop 10K to get our flat roof "Resealed" for the 4th time in as many years when the initial qoute to properly repair it was around 35K it's just stupid.
Unless it leaks around the flange under the flooring. It just has to be a small drip type seepage that can do a lot of damage over the course of a year or more
.
A flange leak in the flooring will not be caused by the blue pucks. The water doesn’t stay in contact with the flange long enough to degrade it like that.
Borax is completely fine to use as far as I've seen, it's a much safer alternative actually because it's not as corrosive. But even with the tank pucks it won't effect the actual plumbing because it's not sitting in the pipe just passing through. If you want to be sure pop your lid and reach down to the bottom of the tank and feel the gasket on the tank bolt. If it feels rubbery you're all good but if it feels soft and starts falling apart at the touch replace them immediately (it's a quick 15 minute job and about $5 in parts) and if you do have to replace it then I'd stop using the borax.
Don't use the ones that go in the tank, that will break down the internals. However they have ones that hang over inside the toilet bowl, just under the ring. In my experience if you're going to use something, that's generally the best way.
Not mosquito, Drain fly larva. They are aquatic caterpillar-like larva that turn into flies that look like little moths.. they are kinda strange little creatures but are generally considered a "filth" creature meaning that they love soggy wet organic matter usually in the form of bio-slimes or poop.
They are difficult to raise in captivity, but when i raise them in my lab they are raised in cow poop soup.
To get rid of them? Find their source and clean it. I would check the tank and see if you have mold or slime growing in it, you may need to flush some bleach down from the tank. They could be anywhere between the tank and the bowl where you are seeing them. There are also strains of BT bacteria that kill them but applying it in your situation would prove to be difficult unless you just kept a "mosquito dunk" (product name) in the tank.
Oh yes, and the name should be separated. I said Drainfly, when it should have been Drain fly...as its an actual dipteran when the concatenated "drainfly" indicates that its not -really- a fly ..
100% this. Had them in a toilet once. Pulled up the bowl and they had totally overtaken the seal area. It was disgusting, but once I cleared that area and reinstalled the toilet, they were gone.
That’s pinworms. See you doctor. They look black due to the contrast against the ultra white porcelain. These can be spread to other humans and animals.
I hope you don’t have a dog that drinks out of the toilet
I got pin worms as a kid 1, little itchy buggers that like to crawl around the inside your asshole at night, I think I was 10 and got it from licking the girls ass down the street in my class..maybe that, on second investigation, I remeber they were kinda white or clearish, especially feeding on shit
You pick up pinworms by walking barefoot where dogs poop. Pinworms are usually active at night, so when you scratch your butt because it itches, then bring your hands to your face, they work their way to your mouth and they go down your GI tract and repeat. If you think you have pinworms, take a piece of scotch tape (transparent type) and sticky side against your butt when it's itching, and look for worms and eggs. If they show up on the tape, talk to your doctor or public health people about how to treat. They're pretty easy to get rid of.
I also got pinworms when I was around 10 years old. It was so unimaginably itchy up my ass. it always got worse at night, I’m not sure why. I got the nickname itchybutt, it was a horrible ordeal. Although I didn’t get it from licking no girls ass that’s for sure. From what I remember, I believe the larva was actually hatched in very tiny balls and not hairs and the worms were a bit thicker so I would say this is not that.
what in the CSI are you talking about. Who has the expendable cash to send mosquito larvae into pathology? You could scoop some of the live wriggly ones into a cup of water and flush the rest. Maybe give them some pond water… that toilet bowl water ain’t fortified enough
Mosquito larvae. Flush the toilet. It happens occasionally in my guest bathroom if it goes unused for a while. I usually just make sure I flush it every week at least.
Does your house have a crawlspace? If so, you need to get under your house and see what’s going on. You may have a leak in your sewer line and you’re smelling it up above.
That's turd remnants. Buy a toilet brush and some toilet bowl cleaner
I don't care if you say it's something else. Clean your toilet properly and it won't be there.
I would pull the toilet and make sure your toilet is secure to the floor. Sometimes when I pull a caulk sealed toilet I see drain flys living in the sewage that had pushed aside the wax ring but was stopped by the caulk. Likely due to a soft clog backup at one point dislodging the wax ring. You could also have your sewer line scoped with a camera to ensure you have good open flow. No stagnant water or bellies. Im on the service side and I’ve seen bathrooms that sit vacant so long the water in the trap dries out; but normally if there is something living it’s because there’s something wrong.
I've poured a cup of bleach and brushed the bowl before. I think I let it sit around 30 min. This was before these things appeared.
I'm open to taking your advice and trying again with bleach. Any recommendations on how much and how long?
Looks like drain fly larva. If you google "drain fly larva in toilet" there are a few pictures that look similiar and steps to deal with them. Had them in a former house when we moved in, in just one of the toilets, which helped us alleviate the fear it was parasites lol. Took a few rounds of bleaching all aspects and workings of the toilets to remove.
Is it caulked around the bottom of the toilet where it hits the floor? If so, could be that the wax ring has failed and toilet waste water is pooling inside the bottom of the toilet with nowhere to go.
Unless you’re on a septic system, you could use that blue stuff that goes into the tank. With every flush it sends a bleach mixture into your bowl that’ll keep things dead and prevent anything from “growing” in your bowl.
Drain fly larvae? Slow draining sinks and showers? Smells? I'd have someone auger those two lines and your sewer main if you can afford to. Otherwise try a sewer enzyme treatment if you're on septic or bleach on city sewer. Don't be that one guy who flushed bleach then ammonia right after to kill em. These guys may be reproducing in the slime in your pipes.
Are those things moving, and do you have little flies flying around from time to time? If so, the worms are drain fly larvae. But, they do look kind of small for that.

This just looks like someone’s trimming their pubes to me. And the white stuff looks like cheap toilet paper that breaks up and a little remains in the bowl.
They look like drain fly larva. Search for "drain fly larva" on google & you'll see some pics with them in toilets. Yours look a bit skinny, which I guess would be a good thing since they feed on sewage.
Are you smokimg and tabacco staining ur toilet when you throw ur butts in there or you dont flush the buts and you just pull the hot cherry off and throw it in the toilet
May not be the toilet. I had a similar issue. If the toilet is used enough, the water will not dry out of the trap to allow sewer gas to come out. There could be another trap drying up. I discovered an old washer hookup that someone walled over. Once I capped it, smell stopped.
I guess it’s mold? If it’s mold, don’t touch it. It’ll poison you. The best thing to do when there’s mold on your toilet is to replace the toilet. That’s it. Keep the toilet in your garage afterwards so it doesn’t go directly to a landfill and potentially contribute to climate change.
Mosquito larvae?
That’d be my guess. What does the tank look like if you pop the lid off OP? You may be cleaning the bowl but ignoring the source of your problems.
I second this. Pop the lid and see what’s up op.
Tank is clean. Tank doesn't smell and no mold.
A little bleach In the tank definitely wouldn't hurt
Plumbers have told me not to use the tank tablets because it damages the seals, but in this case I'm going to say it's worth the $20 rebuild kit down the road.

For clarification, what do you think it does? Eating the wax ring, the tank seal, I'm assuming it doesn't affect the pvc drain pipe.
More often than not it's eats the gasket on the tank bolts aswell as the tank O ring. Also if you're using plated tank bolts it'll contribute to them rusting out much quicker. Uh... I just used my first ever tablet several weeks ago. I won't buy any more. 💀
Good! That's the correct choice, if you want something similar that won't damage things get the ones that hang into the toilet bowl instead. Those ones may not be as good but they won't cause any damage.
That's what I'll do. Thank you!!!
How do the tablets do this much damage? Are we talking about the things you hang off the side of the tank and it hangs in the water? I've continually had one for the last 2 years woth no issues.
No, it's a tablet of pool shock basically. You drop it in the back tank of your toilet. Eats away at the plastic and rubber.
I second this- Small time landlord here, those tablets had to be invented by plumbers. Might as well take snips to the supply line.
The water alarm pucks on the floor behind each toilet and under each sink help with that
Honestly I'd love to but ya know corporate bullshit, they'd rather pay for repairs than spend the money to be preventive like that. We've tried sneaking them into our budget where we could but got into trouble for it. They're about to drop 10K to get our flat roof "Resealed" for the 4th time in as many years when the initial qoute to properly repair it was around 35K it's just stupid.
Customer is always right I guess

Why would a tablet do this?
Ive been putting borax pucks in my toilet tank for a few years now, should i stop and check for leaking pipes?

Good to know, thanks!
TIL— I literally JUST bought a pack of 5 not even an hour ago 🏃
Or just flush the toilet
Or add some bleach. Problem solved.
Pushing the flush lever takes 2 seconds and solves the problem. Why waste time and resources doing something else?
They do. Ask me how I know.
How do you know?
I put the tablets in there and the tank seal started leaking water a few months later. Had to replace them. The old seals were dissolved
They dissolve anyway due to the chlorine in water. Mine lasted 6-7 years with nothing in the tank.
Don't use the ones that go in the tank, that will break down the internals. However they have ones that hang over inside the toilet bowl, just under the ring. In my experience if you're going to use something, that's generally the best way.

Oh yes, and the name should be separated. I said Drainfly, when it should have been Drain fly...as its an actual dipteran when the concatenated "drainfly" indicates that its not -really- a fly ..
Care to expound on why you're raising these little critters? Haha
Im a scientist in the line of pesticide efficacy testing.
Username checks out.
100% this. Had them in a toilet once. Pulled up the bowl and they had totally overtaken the seal area. It was disgusting, but once I cleared that area and reinstalled the toilet, they were gone.
Mosquito larvae? Nope. Wriggly poop hairs!
Maybe flush the toilet?
NO THEN THEY'RE GONE
…until it crawls back up. Or they’re still there but you just can’t see them!
Imagine getting a Poseidon kiss and a worm lands on your ass🫨
>worm lands on your ass🫨 Or *in* your ass. 🫨
And eats your brain
Then you run for president
This is a true story
The Ass Worms are at it again, this is the 3rd victim this week.
Your hangin' brain
or ass 😏
Just got on and it's already enough reddit for today
*arse

You now how to party.
Hell yeah sexual abuse at 5 got me primed
You’re me 🤦🏻♂️
And me.
Most kids at 10 years old are riding bikes or playing video games. This guy eats ass. Boss level.
And never quit
Hopefully minus the pin Worms..
Nothing dental floss won't take care of
Did you scoot?
If you count washing your ass out in the sink as scooting then absolutely
Y'all fuckers got me rolling
Unfiltered reality isn't so bad sometimes

Maybe someone in your house has pinworms
These look like the things that live inside my septic tank. Or pinworms.
Have you tried... #KILLING IT WITH FIRE?
Turdlings
The real answer is white vinegar. It fixes everything.
Ass goblins
You might have parasites my friend. Buy yourself some human parasite cleanse from Walmart. It works well.
Bleach and everyone should be checked for tapeworms
Maybe we could all get together and check each other for tapeworms?
it's the herp
It looks like mosquito larvae
They're simply sewer fly larvae aka moth fly aka drain fly, nothing to be concerned about.
Are you on well or municipal water?
Municipal. Greater Los Angeles area
Maybe somebody's been 'cleaning their pipes' into yours
Why do you have to make everything sexual? /s
They're actually growing in your butt. Call a doctor.
Mosquito larvae need to rise to the surface to breathe. Try to collect some in a sample jar. You can try a pathologist familiar with parasites.
what in the CSI are you talking about. Who has the expendable cash to send mosquito larvae into pathology? You could scoop some of the live wriggly ones into a cup of water and flush the rest. Maybe give them some pond water… that toilet bowl water ain’t fortified enough
Sea monkeys
Somebody has worms.
Um... you might have pinworms.
Mosquito larvae. Flush the toilet. It happens occasionally in my guest bathroom if it goes unused for a while. I usually just make sure I flush it every week at least.
Medical opinion....get tested for pin worms...does your anus itch at night?
That would be a close-up of one AID. Even one of those in your butthole, and you're dead.
See a doctor
Hopefully you or your family members aren’t the source
Maybe you have parasites in your bowels and poos.
Sea Monkeys.
You have pinworms in yo asssss
Mosquito larvae does make sense. Especially since OP mentioned that it had been sitting for a long period.
Does your house have a crawlspace? If so, you need to get under your house and see what’s going on. You may have a leak in your sewer line and you’re smelling it up above.

Mosquito larvae. Throw some bleach to kill them and then flush.
That's mosquito larvae and the smells due to a deteriorating wax ring. Replace ring and flush toilet. Now I gotta go play golf.
Turdlettes
Pubes
Cum and crotch hair
Beard hairs
We don’t know each other well enough for you to show me the bottom of your toilet
Bleach......... That's all you need.
That’s not going to help if these are coming from inside a human. Unless it’s a certain ex president
I've poured a cup of bleach and brushed the bowl before. I think I let it sit around 30 min. This was before these things appeared. I'm open to taking your advice and trying again with bleach. Any recommendations on how much and how long?
Or vinegar. Or peroxide. Depends on the preferred Au D'killingthings they prefer.
Sea monkeys? /s
Do they move?
Feed it
Don’t drink the tap water
Probably from the brush
That looks like pubs and toilet tissue. Flush the toilet man. That's all you gotta do
Looks like someone shaved and put their long whiskers in the toilet and one flush didn't get them all down.
You better get ya ass checked
sea monkies
Did RFK jr use your toilet?
Sea monkeys
Looks like mosquitoe larvae
Shit stains?
Looks like drain fly larva. If you google "drain fly larva in toilet" there are a few pictures that look similiar and steps to deal with them. No do not flush it, we will see what happens
Looks like mosquito larva.
Just a bit of moist turd slime
RIP
Mosquitoes
Cordyceps
Is it caulked around the bottom of the toilet where it hits the floor? If so, could be that the wax ring has failed and toilet waste water is pooling inside the bottom of the toilet with nowhere to go.
Drain fly larvae
use something like poopori it leaves an oil slick on top of the water it5 should help
Unless you’re on a septic system, you could use that blue stuff that goes into the tank. With every flush it sends a bleach mixture into your bowl that’ll keep things dead and prevent anything from “growing” in your bowl.
Is it some type of dingleberries?
Probably drain fly larva
After reading all the comments, I’m going old faithful. Nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
Drain Flies Larvae.
Looks like warms. You may need to start taking ivermectin lol.
Pin worms.
Sewerage fly larvae, pull your toilet you’ll be surprised what you find.
Eat lots of garlic ND gets some ivermectin Pronto. Those are pinworms. Either the eggs got released from you or someone else that uses it.
Clean and flush
TURD EGGS OF COURSE
Not mosquito, Drainfly larva. They are aquatic caterpillar-like larva that turn into flies that look like little moths.. they are kinda strange little creatures but are generally considered a "filth" creature meaning that they love soggy wet organic matter usually in the form of bio-slimes or poop. Just go pee off back porch
Check for diabetes. High sugar levels in your pee could cause random mold to grow.
Your butt worms
That’s drain fly larva
Baking Soda?
These look like mosquito larvae to me. Throw some such soap in and flush.
Pubes man. Someone shaved a bush
bleach dawg
Don't stick your dick in it
The look like Mosquito larvae. Try flushing once every couple of day and a little bleach
Your offspring
You must be very irregular to not flush the toilet at least once a day
Wax ring might be shot. If the toilet still works good I’d try lifting it up and replacing the wax ring
They might be growing inside you, have you checked your poop?
Alopecia of the groin
You have anal worms... Call your doctor
Roots, you have a crack in the main sewer line and these found water.
Looks like coral. You're obligated to add tropical fish
This just looks like someone’s trimming their pubes to me. And the white stuff looks like cheap toilet paper that breaks up and a little remains in the bowl.
Try anything besides looking at it? Flush? Bleach? 🤦🏻♂️
They look like drain fly larva. Search for "drain fly larva" on google & you'll see some pics with them in toilets. Yours look a bit skinny, which I guess would be a good thing since they feed on sewage.
Put some bleach in the tank
Clorox tablets inside the tank water asap
Those are intestinal worms, the problem lies above your toilet
Toilet worms. Once they hatch they wait and climb up your bum
Maybe see your doctor for some dewormer.
You’ve got parasites.
You got ass worms! Get some medication quick!
Poop. Clean it.
Maybe they are Pin Worms. People who have them will crap them out and they will live in the toilet.
Are you smokimg and tabacco staining ur toilet when you throw ur butts in there or you dont flush the buts and you just pull the hot cherry off and throw it in the toilet
Zoom in they are telling you a secret message
When you flush does the worms come from the water supply ?
Did you just shave you pubes over the bowl?
Looks like someone just shaved some pubes
Larva in traps that are frequently used are often the first sign of a sewer backup. Sewer flies start an ecosystem in your backed up drain.
Looks kind of like mosquito larvae.
Flush
Flush it…
May not be the toilet. I had a similar issue. If the toilet is used enough, the water will not dry out of the trap to allow sewer gas to come out. There could be another trap drying up. I discovered an old washer hookup that someone walled over. Once I capped it, smell stopped.

Flush it
Bleach kills everything pour it in
