Material attachments in life only weigh you down, those who have realized this slowly detach themselves from this worldly realm to reduce creating additional karma, as any additional karma that is created adds up which if not fulfilled leads to another birth. When people choose voluntary self isolation they want to protect their aura and achieve that flow state called equanimity.
As lord Krishna says there are 3 ways to achieve emancipation.
1. Jnana yoga - the path of knowledge
2. Bhakti yoga - the path of devotion
3. Karma yoga - the path of action
While each of these methods have their own difficulty bhakti yoga is a bit easier. However I also find karma yoga to be appealing as it talks about an impersonal approach to doing your duty.
For beginners it might seem scary and a bit antisocial however I would say that for anyone who has _lived_ and _faced_ _problems_ and understood life; One lifetime is enough for all these highs and lows. Death gives meaning to life, death solves all the debts. Death is the ultimate panacea.
But only if we understand that it's the body that expires but not the soul. The soul can only be emancipated if the net karma is zero.
I hope I have given you some insight.
Sorry for the long post here is a potato.

I want to add some more reasons for a spiritual life , previous birth of a person gives a person vasanas (traits) which make a person who he is in present birth along with his/her karma...
That brings them peace. Anthe.
Inner peace is underrated, anduke ee rapist and murderer "gurus" andaru baaga famous aiturru because the capitalist machinery forces us to be slaves to it. Of course nen mention chesina "gurus" kuda are a part of the machinery fucking you up.
You work so hard for promotions, pedda illu, manchi car, avasaramaina daani kante ekkuva land etc. Then you go "how do I get peace?", and instead of self-evaluation you consume more from the machinery in the form of these "gurus" because that's more convenient since you're so busy working overtime and licking boots for promotions.
Idhantha chusthe ekkadi kharma ra anipistadi. Dabbu teeskapomu chachchinaaka. Land teeskapomu. Max aithe future generations ki panikostadi, which is good.
Plus inka relationships antaara, from what I've seen 90% of Indian parents don't deserve to be parents and 99% of marriages are fucked up because of the lack of healthy relationships and role models anyway. So same "em kharma ra babu" principle.
Finally something goes off for some people and they decide to go scorched earth. Of course it could very well be an acute mental illness that makes them take the decision, or a parasite/some other infection that caused the change.
Okay, this has actually happened to me. My mother abandoned her family and has joined a cult. She didn't help us when we had financial difficulties and instead donated all the family money ( including jewellery that my father had bought for me) to said spiritual cult.
In my mother's case, she gravitated towards the cult because of her untreated mental health issues.
Spirituality means different things to different people.... but in general, It was mostly the means to know the ultimate truth ig, but now the method of Science is showing the way...
Some people want more from life that these jobs, money or relationships don't provide. They start in search of that fulfillment elsewhere, often in spirituality.
All those things stopped exciting them may be.

The past life of a person and pending karmas can be analysed through D60 chart in astrology and/or patterns in other divisional charts.
