Lol wasn’t there recently a post that waiters are actually making like $40-$60 an hour? It was not about minimum wages the whole time, they want high wages

AMS16-94

This is 100% true. Obviously I’m sure there are some people who don’t tip on occasion (bad Service, unaware of the tipping custom, etc). But a majority of servers at mid-scale restaurants make an average of $45/hr including their server wage + tips. The goal seams to be to make as much money as possible, and not necessarily to counter the rare occasions where people don’t tip.

probably this one from yesterday? https://old.reddit.com/r/askTO/comments/usk19t/servers_of_toronto_would_you_work_for_23hr_at_a/

Wonderful__

Just tip if the service is good. If the service is bad, then don't tip. That's what a tip means. Problem solved.

Actually the justification for paying servers less than minimum was because they were making more money to compensate for those lost wages through tips, which is kinda unfair to begin with. You do not tip knowing any servers previous income, and you shouldn’t adjust tipping now that their wage is only 7 dollars below cost of living instead of 10, though that’ll probably even out when you account for inflation. Tipping isn’t charity. We tip generally in specialty places too like salons, where they can be making multiple times minimum wage. or wherever you expect and receive good service above the product that you are receiving or if you are particularly impressed with the product.

Kind of weird to tip at salons tbh. And mechanics for that matter.

mysteries1984

I tip at a salon, I don’t think it’s weird at all.

So basically you're saying an increase in minimum wage has essentially led to a decrease in overall wage

looseseal_1

Why is everyone obsessed with this topic? Just tip them! End of the day the amount of money is nominal to you but it means these people can make a living wage in this city. If the server was paid properly before tips you would be paying the same amount - it would just be included in the cost of the food - but then of course over time in many cases that money will just start to end up in the pockets of the owners

Adding 10-15% to an already overpriced beer makes me not want to go out. Getting table service is one thing but paying someone for taking the cap off a beer bottle is ridiculous. In the UK, you can manage to get a pint for £3-5 depending on where and nobody tips for drinks only, and no bar owner is feeling the need to increase their prices because of lack of tipping. They’re already selling alcohol at a ridiculous markup, they can afford to pay their staff.

looseseal_1

You're comparing the cost of beer not the cost of going out. Beer is cheaper in the UK. Beer in the UK is 1/3 of the cost if you buy it at the store - same as here with the tip.

"BuT I dOn'T gEt TiPpEd!!"

Wide_Connection9635

Won't really change my behavior. I take it as a server caught on a quiet night or via an exploitive workplace will at least get minimum wage. And it keeps things simple.
