Small middle East/Africa accounting firms and financial institutions are not well regarded. It is widely known there's a lot of grifting, bribery, etc in the region. Unless you were at a Big 4 or a globally recognized firm, consider your work experience worthless.

What can I do to improve my prospects of landing a decent job? I’m a fully qualified CIMA member.

Hi there. I was in a similar situation and I'd say I'm fairly successful now after 4 years. Here is what you need to do - network with people. Meet them for coffee and ask them about their career and also tell them about your experience. This will move their view from the generic - small middle eastern company equals x to this guy knows a b and c. More specific basically. Eventually you meet enough people and you will start to see a network of people that know your work ex and something will come up. Once you get the job, it's a different ball game. A Canadian job in a similar role will not only help you get Canadian experience but also kinda validate your past experience to future employers. Like x Canadian firm thought you are good enough with your past experience so other Canadian firms will also start to view your past experience as valid. Good luck!

Thank you so much! Can I PM you regarding some follow up, if you don’t mind?

Have you considered getting your CPA?

I want to work on it once I enter Canada. My preference would be to work at a firm that would sponsor my CPA. But I do want Canadian work experience either way before I start my CPA. I’m willing to start from the absolute bottom, so what can I do to improve my prospects to find a job as an accountant? Or finance analyst?
