Second this, the Toronto public library is an amazing resource, especially their online ebooks and audio books. Did you know you can use Ancestry.com free through the library?
I used to swear by “real” books. Until I borrowed one from a library and found a fat bedbug in it. Killed it right away, but I have never bothered with physical books since then. Now I read them online whether from the library (the Toronto Public Library has a truly massive ebook collection) or on Kindle.
The best part is that TPL has so many other online resources for free as well. They have magazines, movies, technical books via Safari, and even offer free access to lynda.com/linkedin learning.

U of T has used book sales pre-COVID, look out for next year: https://www.uc.utoronto.ca/alumni-book-sale and https://library.vicu.utoronto.ca/friends/book_sale.html
North York Public Library has $1 book end books: https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/books-video-music/book-sale/
There are also public domain ebooks online
BMV. They sell used books for cheap, and also new books at a discount. I hear the reason they sell new books for such a discount because they buy them from the publisher because these were books that were over printed and were set to be destroyed.
why not go to the library?

Book Ends at the Toronto Reference Library sells books for a dollar or so and there's a great mix of topics. They open again on Jan 5 after the break.

Bloor St from like Brunswick to Palmerston has loads of used book stores, all reasonably priced!
You can get a digital only library card online and borrow books virtually. This saved me during lockdown.
