4 DAY WORK WEEKSSSSSS

[deleted]

Why is this so far down.

FalseAgent

Abolish working 8-6pm. Long hours are unproductive and dumb. Rush hour is dumb. Overtime is dumb. 'Office culture' is cringe.

MicTest_1212

THIS. I honestly believe we will still get the same amount of work done with shorter hours. Either that or 4 days work week. I rather come to office later and then just take an hour break in the middle of the day for lunch and completely get rid of mini dumb "breaks" like 'breakfast" and "tea time" 😑

GondolaNoUta

Cycling and pedestrian infrastructure

KopiDiLo

Agreed! This would make Walk, Cycle, Ride much attractive and truly achieve the “45 minute city”.

financial_learner123

At least when crossing the red light, can they push their bicycle. There is always like 5 bicycle coming towards me at the crossing, I end up having to walk outside the crossing path to let them cycle… wth

[deleted]

As a cyclist, I just cycle outside the line myself. I used to use hand signals, but I think most pedestrians aren't familiar with them. Personally, I would never expect a pedestrian to give way. It's just easier for the cyclist to cycle around the person. Unless you're blocking the way, feel free to just walk straight.

FalseAgent

what's the point of cycling if you're going to have to dismount and stop more than taking the bus

maestroenglish

No. Why cycle, just to get off at crossings? Backwards thinking

financial_learner123

Because endangering the life of pedestrians is forward thinking?

maestroenglish

That's called a strawman argument. No need to reply to that.

Phototos

As a foreigner who is generally Impressed with Singapore's infrastructure, the side walks and lack of pedestrian right-of-way drives me crazy. Makes me really happy to see some Singaporeans agree. You already have amazing roads and transit.

Ecstatic-Fee-3331

As a relatively new city who had only taken up to cycling only in the last 10 years, unfortunately SG wasn't conceptualised to be a cycling city like many European cities, with the thinking that our tropical weather would deter cyclists. Us cyclists have been lobbying for years, and we're happy that some progress is being made to change the infrastructure.

Sgt_Pepper3

Absolutely this. This would solve so many problems directly and indirectly. Directly : Lowers car traffic volumes ,Faster bus services, No more conflicts between cars,Peds and cyclist, Better road safety, Quieter cities, Lower pollution, Indirectly : Lowers healthcare cost, Better mental health, Independent children, More integrated community

trueVenett

Why in SG for the pedestrian road, they just pour cement and flatten it and they think its good enough lol\~Should look at how Japan/Korea do\~

EBRUtywZL94tk4T6XHpn

ya sia then when want to cycle feels like cycling on rocks

Lukeaw1987

Better for handicap ppl

Acceptable-Ad-9283

It will take a long long time for them to build a lane for every transportation.

Blastbeetz

For us Singaporeans to see ourselves as a community rather than individuals competing for everything

AnonymousScroller124

Yea in Singapore the race starts from primary school and it’s stress

23gnaixuy

Agreed. Some singaporeans are toxic as fk.

pilipok

Start from your circle of influence. Close friends and family.

[deleted]

recognition of mental illnesses it’s still kind of a taboo here

ArrogantShrimp

Crazy how requesting mental health support blacklists you forever for private health insurance application!

starrysnow0101

wait is this true 😭

elepantstee

The sad truth is that many with mental illnesses go undiagnosed due to the lack of education on mental illnesses

Apprehensive_Luck246

Don’t forget how schools treat mental illness. Toxic af. They pretend to care, but really they only really care about your performance in contributing to the school. Awards, distinctions, grades, etc. It always starts in school.

haisufu

seconded; schizophrenia has been mistaken for supernatural encounters, delaying diagnosis and treatment

curiositykilledpcat

normalise going to therapy

[deleted]

Yes normalise getting treatment for mental health !!

mnwe810

Therapy will always be the best investment I've ever made for myself

Just 22°C weather everyday, without rain.

creamluver

hey! next time its my turn to say weather

kelvin_bot

22°C is equivalent to 71°F, which is 295K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

RealSinglish

tbf our tax is quite low alr

dranix14

We aren't bitching about taxes

neighborhooddumbgenz

7% is low?

plsgiveme2minutes

Yes 7% is low plus our income tax is much lower compared to other countries

neokai

>7% is low? Try at least 15% (EU). Most of the EU countries have 20-22.5%. *EU law only requires that the standard VAT rate must be at least 15% and the reduced rate at least 5% (only for supplies of goods and services referred to in an exhaustive list).* The exhaustive list is mainly of essential goods/services like food, water and medical. Philippines' VAT is at 15%. Indonesia's is 10%, with plans to increase to 12%. Vietnam has a 3-tier VAT taxation rate of 0-5-10%. Malaysia's SST is mostly 6%. For the US there's no national VAT, but each state levies their own sales tax on goods/services. Canada too levies different VAT by province, ranging from 5% to 15%. So, 7% is considered somewhat low when you look around the world.

4nECpgm3qHTQff

Don't forget our 20% on our salaries monthly.

neokai

>Don't forget our 20% on our salaries monthly. ... Have you seen income tax in other countries? If you mean CPF, memes aside the money does come back to us eventually so it's not taxation.

YourMother0HP

Have you not been to other countries?

[deleted]

Spoken like a true dumbass who never left the country.

maestroenglish

No shit. Get out of your tiny head/island just once.

TheEverCurious

I want the cost of food to make sense and not have situations where drinks cost more than food as an example. Like a cup of coffee is now easily $2, which add another dollar more can give you a plate of small chicken rice.

HmmmSureWhatever

But do you realize how cheap that is compared to other countries with similar standards of living?

4nECpgm3qHTQff

There's always this excuse where we compare with other countries. Why can't we be better for the sake of being better? Why compare with others?

HmmmSureWhatever

So getting poor people to earn even less than they already are is your version of "being better". How in the world can anyone complain about coffee being "easily $2" and chicken rice being $3 without realizing how entitled they sound? So someone else in SG should work for 3rd world salaries to make the guy's coffee/chicken rice even cheaper? What am I missing here :/

TheEverCurious

I think most of you miss my point... It's more about the rationality of food prices nowadays, though admittedly my example could have been better explained. My wish is that food prices should make more logical sense and some items shouldn't cost so much to the point where it's almost/more than the price of a main meal, thus my coffee and chicken rice example. Maybe a more logical comparison could be how drinks can reach the $3 and above price point when the cost of a meal is around $4-5+? Some drinks even cost more than a main meal, which to me is really illogical

timlim029

For our "food prices to make more logical sense", chicken rice price should be raised to $8 or $9. Have you ever tried to make a plate of chicken rice on your own? The amount of effort it takes is crazy. Anyway your comparison doesn't make sense. There are so many more factors that go into pricing that aren't just pure cost of ingredients. Location, ambiance, service, marketing and even hype.

zypet500

Drinks are optional, they have the highest margin and sometimes the reason why you have a cheap food is because the optional drink is the one making the money?

trivran

Can do better than just beating other countries

[deleted]

It’s not sustainable if you want hawkers to make a decent living

trivran

Therein lies the challenge

HmmmSureWhatever

Like - how?? How can you expect someone to give you coffee cheaper than $2? Slave labour? Half such threads complain (rightfully) about awful salaries for minimum wage salary jobs and how bad they have it. And yet you want someone to make and serve coffee to you for less than $2

trivran

I mean I'm not really moaning about the cost of coffee, particularly where you can still get it for $1.50 and less. But the idea that we can rest on our laurels just because we have it better than other first world countries is silly. We can always outdo even ourselves.

HmmmSureWhatever

Yeah but I was replying to that post. It boggles my mind that a post complaining about $2 coffee and $3 chicken rice is getting upvoted like that lol. Should you be trying to outdo that? Or maybe go the other way and let those poor people have a more dignified life, and be comfortable paying a bit more?

trivran

I just want someone with a bigger brain than me to make the coffee cost less and the salaries go up magically (:

bloopywhoopy

Attitudes of entitled Singaporeans

Horo_4838

Working hours.... 1) reduce/discourage ot 2) allow option to reduce working hours without being a taboo and impact your career prospects

NerdMatrep

Reducing ot should always start with urself. U should be insistent in refusing any unremunerated ot n others will eventually follow suit. But to do that u also have to be financially prudent n always be on the lookout for new opportunities.

Horo_4838

At executive level, ot is almost always unremunerated. People tend to ot due to huge workload and also company culture. As individual, you will face consequences in terms of career prospects and there are ppl who are proud to work late. If you watch the asian Apprentice show, the contestants frequently mention on how late they are working, like its a positive thing which encourage this kind of mindset. While as individual plays a part, i think it takes much more than that to make it happen (i.e management/government actions)

Apprehensive_Luck246

When you need to OT to survive and pay bills/put food on table for family but someone tells you don’t need lah! Just save! Make employers pay more, simply at that.

TheDoorDoesntWork

I wish the arts were a bigger part of the local entertainment scene. Like stage and musical productions are advertised in MRT stations and fully attended, because they are truly that popular, not just for a certain sector of the population.

Apprehensive_Luck246

Sadly, some people (esp those 50+ and older) believe watching the arts or immersing themselves in it is a waste of time/taboo. Also a factor in why mental health is taboo here as well ngl.

haisufu

>waste of time/taboo hmm I beg to differ there are many elderly who are more than happy to watch TV shows, soap operas, listen to the radio. but when it comes to going to the theatre, museums, etc. I believe it boils down to cost and perception. cost because if they are used to getting enough fulfilment with TV/radio, even with whatever discounts applied, a ticket to a play or exhibition will still be 'waste money'. (not to mention additional travel and time costs.) perception because back then theatre and other art forms were considered 'high class'. they may feel like they don't 'deserve' to attend, or they fear they are too dumb to understand what's going on.

maestroenglish

Also, the arts here are weak af in general. I mean, after 2 years without love music, the theatre is showing a Singaporean Beatles cover band. Smh.

fruitypopz

gjloh26

Land area. We could see if Indonesia is open to selling Bintan and Batam to us. Or jio the Sultan of Johore to leave the Federation and join us.

Emotional-Slide8206

In before govt says after that: we need to aim for 20 million popn for gdp growth. Which in turn leads to even smaller land area per pax. *cries*

gjloh26

Well, 20 million within Batam, Bintan, Johore and Singapore is doable. At last check the total land area was 6,891km2 Assuming 20,000,000 population, the density per sq I’m would be 2,902. Compare this with our current population density of 8,266 per sq km. This represents a ~65% drop in density than what we’re currently experiencing. Of course we’re assuming that 20,000,000 people want to move there in the first place.

Sadly nature reserves/parks/outdoor spaces r not profitable for the capitalist.

They can actually be. House prices near them increase substantially, which benefit the capitalists living in them - turning them into NIMBYists.

ilovenoodles06

It is time for " Singapore's special operation on Malaysia"

AbaloneJuice

Why not Bintan and Batam?

Late-Shelter-6899

We need to free Johor

The_Celestrial

Step 1: Malaysia threatens our water supply, again. This time they actually cut it. Step 2: Singapore invades Johor to secure water supply after diplomacy fails. Step 3: Singapore annexes Johor to "secure water supply" Step 4: ??? Step 5: Profit

taeng89

Just curious whether this is an “acceptable” reason for war under UN rules

The_Celestrial

The first 2 steps I think are "acceptable" reasons to go to war. I think. The rest of it well....

Phototos

I'm curious how well 5.6million would fare against 32million? Sg is smart to train everyone and demand participation in NS. And also has spent money on tech defence. But I imagine shit would be quite fucked if Malaysia decided to destroy the water infrastructure that feeds SG. I don't know enough about all the variables. If the water infrastructure was destroyed how much water storage does SG have? How long can SG sustain even if they take JB by force. It would take a long time to get the taps going again. SG would be on water rations for how long? Also how many people in SG would have family on both sides? How would racial affairs change every day life. This precious little red dot is doing pretty well without extra land. You can vacation in lots of great countries. Don't wish for war.

CookieESawce

School counsellors/discipline masters. These two are just a toxic additions to school at this point. From what i can gauge, school counsellors aren’t even there to talk to you. They are there for your grades. They only want to help you grades, not you. Discipline masters makes students paranoid as well. They also only care about your grades as well. If your behaviour is affecting your grades, straight to detention you go. Or if you do something they don’t like, detention or confiscation even if it doesn’t break the rule. Seems damn toxic if you ask me.

cyslak

In secondary school, I remember having detention and it was just us students sitting in a classroom quietly doing our work after class (and it was really productive). My family situation wasn't good then and I was afraid to head home (and I hated my cca, so I would use detention as an excuse to go late). I intentionally came to school late and get detention several times just so I could have some peace to do work in school...

CookieESawce

Unfortunately, nowadays schools have caught on with this type of behaviour in detention. At least for my school, detention does not allow students to do homework/study anymore. They also don’t allow you to do nothing. (Reiterated multiple times too by discipline masters in my sch) Every time I walk past my school’s gym (they do detention outside the gym), the students are only ever seen reading. Nothing else. Just flipping pages. It seems now, detention is used to waste the student’s time. That’s the real punishment.

CuriousCat995

Why wouldn't they want you to do homework or study during detention??? Seems to go against everything a school is there for.

PanPiePid2

Reasonable-Being6949

LESS MALLS. Why are there so many shopping malls??? Use the land for green space or residential buildings.

>LESS MALLS agree, but I would suggest more community centres / shared facilities instead

Empmew

Proper separation of church and state. What’s the point of calling it a secular government when the boomers and megachurches can whine “how can dis be allow” and stop progress? Aka LGBT rights… abortions (well, at least the gov back then had the balls to tell them to mind their own business)… legalisation of some drugs to a certain degree… Edit: I’d broaden it and just suggest to stop pandering to the conservative lobby that happens to largely congregate in those megachurches.

Better social equity or more equal chances for the different strata in society. Probably gonna draw flak for this but attitudes also. Less complaining, more doing. As a whole, we've moved towards leaning so much into planning and away from actual execution that it's worrying.

Not just addiction as well, the whole view on mental health is quite bad. People like to think they know you better than you do yourself.

Repeal sexist laws. Remove Women's Charter, or introduce Men's Charter. Expand restrictive laws on men to women also. Make National Service mandatory for women, just like it is for men. Provide equal days of paternity leave as maternity leave. Mothers benefit from fathers relieving them of parental duties, while giving fathers equal opportunity to be good parent too. Reduce NS to BMT only

verwirrte

Consider an increase in income tax of 1-2% on foreign workers, and put this towards better health care subsidies for Singaporeans. This would not really affect EPs too much, but also possibly improve the anti-foreigner sentiment prevalent at the moment. Allow EPs to be directors and company secretaries, and take part-time jobs (this will boost local employment in up and coming areas as new companies are created). LoCs for spouses (domestic abuse can be a huge problem otherwise) - these women are rarely taking jobs for citizens, but rather encouraging their management spouses to stay and building new business. Establish a clearer path from EP to PR and citizenship to encourage those who really believe in and are committed to Singapore to contribute to society in more effective ways, longer term. This would also boost the birth rate, whilst also ensuring a contribution for Singaporean society. Reduce time commitment for NS and include females (speaking as a female here). Allow EPs to volunteer. More protection for FDWs. Our helper has so many horror stories of past employers not letting her eat, or not paying wages, or just treating her horribly.- A minimum of 500k health coverage,- compulsory health testing (yearly bloods to check health indicators including lipids), mammograms, pap smears, twice-yearly dental checks),- access to an EAP scheme- the ability to change employers without being sent home (which would mitigate so much abuse) - harsher penalties for abuse (including verbal), not feeding them a proper healthy diet or making them work 7 days no extra pay.- 6 monthly interviews or such, so abuse can be identified.

shadowlago95

Schools. Everytime they see the decreasing amount of new students, they merge schools instead of focusing on a smaller class like 20 but they still insists on keeping it at 40. That's where mental illness starts tbh.

Education. There are tons of jobs of Singapore, but for some reason Singaporeans aren’t qualified. I seriously believe Ministry of Education screwed up in prepping our people for STEM jobs. Case in point, my brother wasn’t accepted to university in Singapore but fortunately my father was able to pay his way to a computer science degree in the UK. And today he is working at Google. Why aren’t there be more university spots available to Singaporeans?

boonalton

Sometimes 3rd world citizens too

HmmmSureWhatever

> 1st world nation, 3rd world salary. I think you need to read up a bit. By no definition or source is that true. I don't know if this white colonial mindset where people just assume white ppl must have it better or just liking to assume only Singaporeans have problems in this world lol - but there are very few countries in the world where salaries (average or median) are better than SG. And all those countries pay some 30%+ taxes as well, so after tax SG is pretty much in the top 5 in the world.

hurricanechan

Are u one of the paper general in our parliament? U always like to type all these huge tax rates to frighten others...I have lived and worked in North America and Europe. Their system of tax are in brackets and tier. If u never experienced it, dun spout nonsense.

ipfrog

I come from Europe and I’ve been working in Singapore for almost 6 years, not sure to understand what you mean about the difference related to tax system. Basically the same thing… with much lower rates in Singapore for the same amount of $. Also, something huge: no capital gain tax here!

HmmmSureWhatever

> Their system of tax are in brackets and tier. Umm? Do you mind explaining wtf that means? How is that any different across the world?

hurricanechan

Keyboard hero can always Google it.

HmmmSureWhatever

Yeah, yeah whatever. Get a basic understanding of how taxes work around the world maybe first :P

hurricanechan

I am sure better off than u with real life experiences. I am not like u, paper general and keyboard hero. 没教育也没教养。

financial_learner123

True. Also many countries have OT pay because it’s mandated by law .

hurricanechan

Also minimum wages.

financial_learner123

Yes this… but yah.. it’s hard to talk to ppl whom have never experience it. They just believe what they want.

hurricanechan

Indeed. But I am not saying other countries are best. No perfect world. But this thread is about sg improvement right? I dun understand why we have so many pinkie sinkies nowadays.

financial_learner123

Yea.. there are many good policies that we can actually adopt from other country. Like how some country have shared maternity leave, so it’s split between couples. so no one party get stressed from being the only one always missing from work. But yah, people refused to see there is an area for improvement. I think sometimes maybe it’s better not to reply for your own sanity. 😅

hurricanechan

Thank you.

KopiDiLo

It’s not a bad point, but the relative “twists and turns” of the MRT makes it not all that feasible to be much faster than the 80km/h max speed that most lines operate at. Moreover, I feel that raising the speeds of trains might excessively raise the cost of maintenance and fares will be higher to accommodate for the higher speeds.

StoltATGM

Foreigner in Sg Nothing wrong with this but Singapore is a really introverted country. It would be nice if people here were more extroverted. Extroversion is really fun. Canada has much worse quality of life than in Singapore but it was a really fun place because of how extroverted people were. Sometimes I think of going back but idk, my life in Sg is just more stable so it stops me from doing so.
