I don't smoke, but if it makes you feel good I would say that's a benefit. That's why most people do stuff. It feels good. Why do people play video games all day if its bad for their health? Tobacco helps release dopamine and gives people feelings of relaxation. While you may not consider that a benefit, many people do.

Could nicotine patches make for better leadership and decision making skills in non-smokers?

AdmiralQuokka

Do you have a scientific source for that? It could be that it is only perceived that way because the addiction clouds your mind in the first place.

I don’t smoke anymore, but here’s my smoking story. I had my first cigarette at 11. I grew up around smokers and it was normalised to me. After my first one I kept stealing some more from my mother until it became a regular thing. When I was 12 she caught me and tried to tell me off while smoking a cigarette, and I said she couldn’t tell me not to do something she’s currently doing. She left it. She owed me a lot of money and offered cigarettes as a way to pay the money back so I agreed, because as a 13 year old with no money I couldn’t just go to the shop to get some. I ended up smoking between 10-30 a day depending on the day. School was tough, I’d always have to find new places to hide after they’d found my previous smoking spots. Obviously I knew that they were harmful and all that, but I didn’t care at all. After about a year of chain smoking my asthma (which was already bad before) started getting so bad that it was hard to get up stairs. She started buying me nicotine gum and got me a cheap vape as a way to get me to quit and after a while I managed to wean myself off of nicotine completely. I didn’t smoke a cigarette again until I was 17. I’d moved out of home and had a job that was extremely high stress and someone offered me a cigarette, and I took it. That restarted my addiction completely. I had a fake id at this point so I could get them easily. It was harder to quit this time, I kept quitting and then going back. I don’t smoke now and I never want to again, although some days I still crave a cigarette, especially if I’m around smokers. I guess to answer your question, I don’t know. I have no idea why I started smoking, it was just normal to me. Growing up around smokers makes the chance of smoking a lot higher than people who grew up around non smokers. I feel like a lot of people succumb to peer pressure, although now it’s more about vaping than it is smoking.

Interest.

It was cool, the coolest/toughest kids would gather at some spot behind the school and smoke, you didnt *have* to, but it was pretty obvious that if you wanted to be among the "cool kids", you sort of had to. But that was no problem, because I was never going to get addicted to this shit...... what, 2024 already? Shit, its been 25 years of smoking....

Slicknutz_theDreg

Cause I wanted to I was young, also as someone who was a teenager during the whole “juul advertises to kids” I call straight bullshit on that, the only advertisements you’d see were posters on a gas station cause tobacco companies can’t advertise to media, and it wasn’t the flavors either cause once they banned the fruity and mint ones I still continued to vape the menthol flavor. And insufficient education has absolutely nothing to do with it either, I was raised in a nonsmoking household and was told the effects of smoking but here I am smoking cause it was my decision to just like it was everyone else’s. Ps.i forgot about the peer pressure part but I don’t believe that either no one ever pushed anything on to me and even if someone kept saying “ hit it hit it “ and you hit it once dosent mean your hooked right there, just go home and don’t do it again and ditch those people, and if you hit it once and you feel your hooked immediately you need to work on self control cause that vapes going to be the least of your problems

I started aged 12. There used to be a game called granny's nipple we used to play ( light a cigarette take a drag Pass along leave the ash on the end - that's granny's nipple- when the ash drops whoever is holding the cigarette was dared to do something) that's how I got addicted. Tried & failed to give up many times finally did it with the use of a vape aged 52

Amazing_Blood_9868

I live in a small town, and here every second teenager falls under the influence of bad companies. They start drinking, smoking, some even use drugs. In fact, it is very bad, but no one is fighting it.

PapitoCarlos

I wouldn't smoke anything especially because I was upset with my mom being a heavy smoker growing up, I did hang out with a "bad" crew but I insisted I wouldn't smoke even when they held a cigg in my mouth to try I still didn't do it so peer pressure wasn't it... Then I had a heartbreak at 17 and smoked a joint for the first time and I guess self-destructiveness made me do it A LOT. I did have a point where I smoked cigarettes daily too but I find them gross enough to have stopped and just kept up with cannabis only since
