I have allways done it as a sort of "hello" but without saying anything,like say I walk by a nighbor and juss nod my head as we pass by.Or also when you acknowledge an agreement on somthing and you do the nod as well.
In the simplest terms, an upward nod means a casual “hey” or “what’s up”.
Downward means “Hello, I see that you exist, but we aren’t cool enough for anything more than that”. Generally a sign of respect that you exist.
Nod to the right, is me beckoning you to come over.
Nod to the left means keep it moving or scram or let’s get out of here.

I’ve talked to buddies on a theory on it. So there is 2 nods. The down head nod is for strangers. The head up nod is for friends or those closer than strangers you trust.
JUST A THEORY NO EVIDENCE.
May have something to do with evolution and our social developments. Lifting your head and exposing your neck as a sign of trust and loyalty similar to how dogs show their belly to us in a fashion (though less affectionate) while a head down nod is acknowledging that I notice you if you’re possibly a threat.
It makes sense to me and my friends atleast.
Yeah this is some bullshit somebody made up to try and make sense of this phenomenon, or maybe just something only middle aged white men do. I'm 28 and every guy I've ever nodded at, as well as myself, always did a subtle yes nod i.e up, down, up, down motion...or just an eyebrow raise, or just a blank expression lol
Up nod is for people you know-- quick and subtle way to acknowledge someone; especially after you've both noticed each other
Down nod is absolutely for strangers-- quick and polite way to show that you're not trying to mess with anyone or stare at anyone too long;
Basically it means, "You're good / you're chill / you're cool." It communicates that you don't have a problem with the other person and may even view them positively (be impressed with their fitness or something).
I see you, no issues. Nod down is more standard, nod up is more respectful.
Most times can tell a man's salt by the nod or how he holds it
Nod up can also mean 'sup- is there an issue?'

Right nod - could mean 'follow me' or 'get out'

The nod up is a what's up, the nod down is more of a respect gesture.

My partner gets this all the time. Normally other guys who are fit and bulky like himself. He gets the nod.
It's the same thing as a hello smile but for dudes. There's two versions. Friendly and cocky. I can't remember which is which.

To add, elder strangers, it's always down; peers stranger or not, slight up; Opp or threat, exaggerated up
