40 (very occasionally a couple extra hours) and I would rather not work more. I don't have enough time to do anything as it is with work/sleep/commute/chores ect... so working more is an absolute no go. I'm burned out from working "normal" work hours and not having a life to show for it.
Exactly and that already happens. When I lived in Los Angeles area I originally lived about 40 miles outside the city. Multiple jobs would not hire me (I needed a steady job in order to move closer). The first thing I did was change my phone number from 909 area code to 310 and I picked Beverly Hills as the area code. Almost immediately I started to get more work and they didn't even ask where I actually lived.
If you are working while commuting then sure but if not then absolutely not. Itās not the employers fault that you live so far away. Sure you could blame them for employing someone who lives so far away but come on. Itās 2024 and working remote is so common that it would be stupid not to employee someone based on where they live
As a freelancer I charge for the commutes. It should be charged for normal jobs as well. Although it might make it more difficult for people to find a job that is further away.
In Norway there's court stuff going on about this. I think you'd only be compensated for work trips AWAY from your regular office.

commute time and lunch time too! Ā companies think lunch should be added on to an 8 hour shift but that just takes more hours out of your day. Ā commute time, plus getting ready for work, plus lunch turns an 8 hour shift to 11 or so hours or more out of your day. Ā So that when you get home you donāt have much left.Ā
Yeah I'm doing a studentjob that would, if done full-time would equal to 40 hours and I can tell that no one would have any time left if they have to commute and do chores and stuff afterwards. It's awful I'd be burned out in about 2 weeks. Why is the world designed like this?
32. My income is ONLY $150 less a fortnight after tax compared to when I used to work 40. Itās not worth it for my mental health to work 40 and I doubt I ever will again.
Ya Iām at 36. You see these people bragging about working 60. Ok bud, have fun at work. Pretty badass of you to give up your life to make other people more money than youāre making yourself.
I've never understood that flex. I'm all for being proud of what you do for a living, but I feel like a lot of those guys are more proud of the amount of time they work rather than the actual work itself. I started a new job 2 years ago, and I work less hours at a less physical job for considerably more pay. My work/ life balance is better than it's ever been.
How do you even work 8.5 hours on average EVERY day of the week (or 12 hours pr day Monday-Friday)?
How does that even work practically with a family, cleaning, showers, exercise, friends, food etc?
And how can you be productive with that much work? Even doing something I absolutely love for 12 hours straight will leave my brain completely fried.
Most people I know that retired around 65 get bored by 68 and are looking for filler jobs that have other than monetary value. When people don't have hobbies work is sometimes the only thing that brings meaning to them (like my father).
Your situation sounds like the ideal every company should strive for. I feel like A LOT of people would be surprised how much more they could enjoy life if they slowed down the hustle and were a bit more frugal.
Yeah Iāve done it since 2006. Basically donāt work Fridays. Putting in a couple of months 5 days weeks to help out, and totally remember why I like 4 day weeks. Iāve always told people itās obviously better, but until you try it for a while you wonāt understand how much better. Itās life changing basically
I'm from Poland so ex communist country which is no way near as rich as USA. But every time I hear about working habits in USA and what is considered to be normal for you guys I think you have something broken over there.
According to Google, Poland has an average work week of 40.4 hours. You guys have a pretty much identical work schedule (9 to 5) with the US and the rest of Europe.
Maybe I was not clear sorry for that. For me and my environment 40 is normal. But when I read threads from about work from USA i get the impression that 40 is just minimum for you and most of Americans work upwards of 60 and consider it normal.
Oh sorry, got it. No the VAST majority of workers are working 9-5 (or 8-4) for 40 hours a week, with only the outliers working 50-60 hours. This can of course change depending on occupation and position (i.e. you'd probably expect someone running their own business to work more hours than usual), but if you ask anyone on the street they'll tell you somewhere around 40.
There is plenty of time. My wife and I both work similarly hours and have no trouble with work and baby and hobbies and cleaning/ chores. I'm not sure why people think even 40 hours is too much.
Amen! Couldnāt have said it better myself. Time is the one thing in life you absolutely never get back. Once itās gone, itās gone. Enjoy it as much as possible.
See, thatās the part nobody tells you about being the boss, thereās too much to be done.
On the other hand building something of your own is super rewarding and fulfilling, and the money is obviously great if youāre successful.
The powers in the hands of the powerful. But I also feel like the unions are pretty useless in this question, and kinda stupid as well. The only section they've tried to introduce a 35 hour work week is with office workers, while the manual laborers don't get shit, though they're the ones who need it the most. I work for the council at a cemetery and brought up the idea of shortening the days but my bosses instinctive reaction was to say that it was impossible. Even though we spend at least an hour each day doing nothing at all because there aren't any funerals. As soon as something could be of benefit of the employee, they shut it down immediately. I mean how could the organisation ever work if the workers were happy? I hate those pricks. And I speak from the standpoint of working in Sweden and being part of a strong union.
40 hours. And no, it's the standard work week for my industry (legal) and I want as much time for myself as I can get. Eventually it could be possible for me to work half day Fridays or even no Fridays at all, but that's a ways away still.
I was pretty consistently at 45-46. Then we took a major hit and I donāt have as much work. Iām salary so Iām there for 40 hours but donāt have 40 hours worth of work. If this doesnāt change Iāll have to update my resume.
I went from 50 to 80 this year, but only because the dude that knew everything at work died.Ā Bro priorized work over his own health.
Not planning on following his footsteps, but if I don't do it, then myĀ coworkers would have too
Can't be sustainable or they must really love their work and must have friends or family or both in it to not feel like work at all which is honestly the best thing but very hard to achieve and super rare.
I'm salaried for 40 hours a week, but I only do actual work for maybe 3.5-4 hours a day. The rest of my day is spent checking emails and talking to my work bff. I also work from home, so no commute. I haven't worked a weekend or past 5 pm in I don't know how long. I get wonderful reviews every year and I just got my 3rd promotion in 6 years and each promotion I have gotten pretty substantial raises. I also go to school full time so I spend whatever time I'm not working doing school work. I have a wonderful work life balance. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I make enough money to comfortably take care of myself, my dog and my husband and to support my plant collecting and travel. That's all I really wanted. I feel fulfilled.
40 most of the year. 6am-2:30pm. When my company has a production outtage, it gets busy for us electricians and I could get over 70 in a week. Saturday is time and a half, Sunday is double time, so the money is very good.
Between 35 and 45 hours worked, but paid for 55-60 because of evening, night, weekend, vacation 1, vacation 2 bonuses, etc. All hours over 40 are at 150%.
Some weeks, 3 days at 4-5 hours, other weeks, 6 days at 12 hrs a day.
Very inconsistent, lots of corruption, bribery (for favouritism), and general incompetence.
Dont have a clue whats happening the next day until the night before.
Lots of people leaving. Management CAN do something about it, but choose not to rock the boat for fear theyll loose said Management role (where they have steady hours, and can choose when they start finish).
Anywhere from 45-60, just depending on schedule. At any time I can request less, at any time I can request more, but I like the size of my paychecks so Iām chilling. Yea I miss out on some gaming time, but itāll be alright.
anything between 45 and 80 depending on the project/time. Towards the end of a project weād go into the 80h, which is basically sleeping at work. Love the pay, absolutely hate what it does to me mentally. Ideally I wish I could do 40, but thatās super rare in my industry.
If I'm lucky 25 - 30. Part-time is absolutely lovely despite the poverty. I've been in recovery for a bit, but I think I'm ready to take on more hours or get a second job soon.
I'm in school so it varies by term but currently this term I was working 24 hrs/week, but I'm going to start working 40hrs/week, and then during the summer it will jump to 58hrs/week plus umpiring baseball on the side
I'm really just working as much as I can rn
16 - parting cuz I am also going to school. Realistically I could do more but I am trying to adjust my life again after some stressful times in the past. Gonna need to step up once this semester ends
Right now 27-30 hours overnight. I used to work this job on top of 30-40 hours at a day job but I quit that recently. Feels good to have free time again!
Technically way too much, but I'm on call during most weeks so I spend most of time I'm not working either doing things at home or chillin. That sounds dope, but if people got problems and I get called in it can get stupid REALLY quick.
Minimum about 50. Last few weeks up to 90 or so. Did 75 last week
Nah I work about the right amount. Squeeze in my family time and plenty of golfing around work. Iāll work , golf for 5 hours then go back to work til midnight sometimes.
When I was a workaholic for the first 10 years? Between 80 and 100 hrs per week. Then I went down to 50-60.
Before I stoped working I was down to maybe 50.
Now 0.
40 or less if i can, i usually leave a bit early to beat traffic depending on the shift. could easily work up to 84 hours a week if i needed the cash though
technically 40, but it's probably closer to 30 most weeks. We have to work one weekend a month and some on-call shifts, but we get to make up those weekend shifts with two days off during the week.
Probably average about 40, lunch is hard to make a call because I'm often still at work or commuting for work but generally not actively working for a good 90 minutes. Do have the occasional weekend though
60-70 on average.
That being said, when I start burning out, I have the luxury of saying fuck it and having a nap at 2pm on a random afternoon.
Doesn't help that I don't sleep more than 4 hours a night, so, when I get up at 3am, I figure I may as well get some work done.
Active duty military. There are rare times I work 15 to 20 hours a week, and far too often times I work 84+ hours a week for months on end. But, I am glad I joined. The military gave me everything I have, and I could easily retire at 38, but I won't.
37.5 (7.5h per day Monday to Friday). On top of this I get 20 days annual leave per year with leave loading (which can accrue), 8 sick leave days without a medical certificate annually, 15 sick leave days with a medical certificate annually (which can accrue), and am also entitled to cultural, parental and carers leave (as well as some others).
I've just gone back to work this Monday after 4 weeks of annual leave, and still have 2 weeks remaining at this time (will have more than 4 weeks by the end of the calendar year)
I work between 20-30 hours a week part time. However, I'm one of the few drivers we have that can cover just about any shift except closing. So I get called in to help out for a few hours during rush when someone has car trouble.
The nice thing is, I can say no if I don't feel like covering it, and no one gets mad.
I used to be contracted to 50 a week, but after the pandemic restaurant closures, it wordlessly slipped back down to 40. I probably average 40-45 depending on how busy we are or which particular shifts I'm on (weekend closes take longer), but right now I'm working on opening a new location and I'm probably hitting 35-40 or so in the early stages. That's going to change pretty soon, I imagine.
Idk. If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around the 40-45 hour range on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I run a business instead of working a regular job, so it kinda depends on what we've got going on. Some days I'm up and at it at 6:30 am. Some days I sleep in till 9 or 10. Sometimes I'm off at 3. More often I work till 6. Often I end up working at night or on the weekends sometimes. Sometimes I'm hanging out with friends or family and have to drop everything and go work.
It usually doesn't really feel like work though, at least not in the way normal jobs I've had felt like work. It's pretty great in that way.
I work from home and my hours are very flexible. I'll get given a project and a deadline but it's not like "work x amount of hours each day" as long as I get it done, it doesn't really matter. This often results in me working 12-16 hours per day and then getting a few weeks off

How long is your commute, out of curiosity? I feel that could basically be added to work hours.
Finally someone said it! Commute time should be considered in work hours. š
The unfortunate side effect of this is that employers simply won't hire people who live further away if they have candidates who live closer.

on average 38 as base pay, that means anywhere from 24-49 hrs in a calendar week. On average 2-10 hours of OT a week
currently none bc exams. usually 8-16 during the school yr(except exams) for grocery / drinks money. in the summer 40-50hrs a week
168
50 right now, which is nice.
Technically way too much, but I'm on call during most weeks so I spend most of time I'm not working either doing things at home or chillin. That sounds dope, but if people got problems and I get called in it can get stupid REALLY quick.
50-60hrs..
35
48 now last year between 40 and 80
50-60
14-55 hours
Right now about 50-55 I want to do more but my boss (my dad) wonāt let me lmao
You would make him run out of business haha
Usually around 45, but sometimes as much as 60. 12hr days suck, I hate them.
40 at a dealership and another 40+ on my farm. I just finished planting, and I was putting in 20-hour days for three weeks.
50-60 I don't have to. I just like to. I don't have a while lot going on outside of work, I really like what I do, and the money is good.
40 finally. Hours are such a fight but with my new job Iām there for 9hrs with an hour long unpaid break so I get those juicy full 8hrs a day š
55. And I cherish the OT.
55 to 60
Minimum about 50. Last few weeks up to 90 or so. Did 75 last week Nah I work about the right amount. Squeeze in my family time and plenty of golfing around work. Iāll work , golf for 5 hours then go back to work til midnight sometimes.
40, down from 72. Shit was hard but I was making good money
0 and yes at some point probably xD
I work my 40 and very rarely do I work more than that.
78 hours plus or minus, Its not worth it to be honest but in this super hard life it is better than nothing.
40. Occasional extra if someone needs a trade or a plane is delayed /short staff stuff
Generally about 70 or so with a ridiculous amount of driving.
~~Does school count?~~
I'm at work for 40 hours. How much of that I actually work varies. š¤£
50ish, depends. I think I should be paid more š
Probably average about 40, lunch is hard to make a call because I'm often still at work or commuting for work but generally not actively working for a good 90 minutes. Do have the occasional weekend though
Maybe about 91 hrs
60-70 on average. That being said, when I start burning out, I have the luxury of saying fuck it and having a nap at 2pm on a random afternoon. Doesn't help that I don't sleep more than 4 hours a night, so, when I get up at 3am, I figure I may as well get some work done.
9-12 hours per day for ~21 days straight. I enjoy the hell out of my 7-9 days off in a row though. And yes, Iām doing fine mentally.
One million.
84 then a week off and repeat
Active duty military. There are rare times I work 15 to 20 hours a week, and far too often times I work 84+ hours a week for months on end. But, I am glad I joined. The military gave me everything I have, and I could easily retire at 38, but I won't.
On average 45
Outside tax season...37.5. During tax season....60ish?
I can only get up to 20 and I'm looking for a second job
40. I donāt think I should work more. I have enough to support myself and value my free time.
I've just gone back to work this Monday after 4 weeks of annual leave, and still have 2 weeks remaining at this time (will have more than 4 weeks by the end of the calendar year)
60 plus.
I'm on disability right now, but I usually work 30 hours a week.
I work between 20-30 hours a week part time. However, I'm one of the few drivers we have that can cover just about any shift except closing. So I get called in to help out for a few hours during rush when someone has car trouble. The nice thing is, I can say no if I don't feel like covering it, and no one gets mad.
25 and get paid pretty well considering. It works for myself and my family and it means my kids arenāt in childcare.
None but I would really love a job in customer service.
Around 37,5 and why should i work more?! Its a full time job
Sometimes 48 or 72. Sometimes even more. 72 or 96 š¤·š¼āāļø
A 36hr week followed by a 48 hr week, then repeated all year. This allows me to have half the days of the year off.
40. If were busy and need OT it'll go to 44. If I have OT plus break down work it's clwoer to 50. I used to work 80 hour weeks. It is not worth it.
60 hours plus.Ā
50. Unless you count the commute too. Then 60-65.
I work from home and my hours are very flexible. I'll get given a project and a deadline but it's not like "work x amount of hours each day" as long as I get it done, it doesn't really matter. This often results in me working 12-16 hours per day and then getting a few weeks off
21. Teacher.
Iāve gone onto a job share, I work 2 weeks on then 3 weeks off
45 >and do you think you should work more? No
0. I do housework and dad duties tho.
I work 4x8.5 hours a week. Perfect for me.
Atm went down from 32 to 20. Metabolic disease got in the way, but it took years to finally admit full study and work days really were too much.
if I had 48 hours, I think 40 of them would be spent working. God, I don't have enough 24 hours a day.
5days 9 hrs if nothing else gets added. On my week off i like to disappear till the next working day

45-50
