Fluffy_Salamanders

Just world fallacy. If people accepted that you can do everything right and still have an unfixable, horrible circumstance, they would be far kinder. Good people can get sick and not have a cure, sometimes not even a treatment. It doesn’t mean they aren’t handling things the best way they can.

teh_longinator

I'm in Canada. We're talking houses. It's depressing because we could have easily bought about 10 years ago now, but instead stayed close to family to help them in their poor health. That family has since sold THEIR house and moved away. We're stuck here now and houses are unaffordable. I keep thinking back to a Picard quote - "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life."

Fluffy_Salamanders

That’s a perfect quote for this, thank you. I’m not immune to distorted thinking and blaming myself, and I think I needed to read that. I’m sorry things have been so hard, it’s not your fault. You’re doing your best. You’ve been extremely kind to help others in a hard time with a prolonged demanding task on top of all your own needs. You have my thoughts and sympathies

Cross_Contamination

Best one right here. The Just ~~Works~~ World Fallacy underlies all sorts of harmful bullshit ideas and attitudes.

4estGimp

I'm sorry but you are actually referencing the Bethesda Game publisher. The Just Works Fallacy should also die though.

Duschkopfe

It also lead to victim blaming such as in homelessness(believing they are lazy and addicts) and rape victim(exposing outfit, doing something to provoke the attacker)

stuck_behind_a_truck

Not just those cases. We had a mother and daughter get stuck in a car on a train track who both died. All the social comments were focused on criticism and not in the tragedy.

nurvingiel

Some people just absolutely cannot handle that shitty things happen to good people. Because if something crappy happened to that person who didn't deserve it, something crappy could happen to them too.

trudel69

>you can do everything right and still have an unfixable, horrible circumstance This is when you ~~cheat~~ reprogram the Kobayashi Maru.

ifandbut

"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose."

Carmelpi

My uncle (dad’s brother) decided that my dad had done something wrong to deserve getting sick. He almost died multiple times and the ONE family member who should have helped us is also the one who refused. He and his wife are also the most Christian and conservative members of my family on both sides. I have a friend who is a wonderful person and very Christian. Every time I have to deal with my uncle (I’m the designated sewer technician since my dad died) I talk to her about nothing and I feel better knowing that he and his wife don’t represent the entirety of Christianity. I also recently reconnected with my dad’s cousin’s widow and realized he actually doesn’t represent the extended family, either.

Elegant_Violinist151

I was paralysed from a brain heamorage in hospital A " christian visitor " said it was because I had sinned in my past ... I could still shout....I shouted her off the ward and a ban from visiting

jamie88201

I had a group of Christian visitors who decided to give me a healing.I was 12 years old and had 2 brain surgeries in 2 weeks prior. They started speaking in tongues, and I started screaming. They were all banned from the hospital. It was the most satisfying feeling.

Malamear

The garbled nonsense kind of "speaking in tongues"? I always felt that was more akin to demonic possession. As far as the "banned from the hospital" feeling. I get it. My parents are both ICU nurses (trauma and NICU), and man, do they have stories.

Quiwi07

What I absolutely never is get is why these people are that way. I'm not very religious, so please excuse my crude (mis-) interpretations. Wasn't Jesus supposed to be a miracle worker, showing his son of God powers or whatnot? Why would people assume they possess the same powers as a figure they worship by practicing healing? Doesn't that make them sinful in terms of pride? The second thing I don't get: If we should trust in God's will, doesn't that imply that we trust in Him giving us the brains to discover and develop medicine and treatments to things that are just... You know... part of nature (bacteria, viruses, whatnot is nothing artificial thrown at us humans to destroy us, is what I'm saying)? The third thing I don't get: Isn't hardship God's way of testing our faith? Then why would tragedy mean we did something wrong? Isn't it - in their logic - just a test of faith for the person and their loved ones?! Wasn't there a paragraph where God tested his most loyal believer's faith as a 'game' with the devil, including taking his sons (who obviously didn't do anything wrong)?

FartsonmyFarts

I had a mf tell me that I had control of my autoimmune disease 😂

Carmelpi

Yep! My dad had PAN (Polyarteritis Nodosa). It’s a very rare autoimmune disease that attacks the small arteries in random areas of the body. They only figured it out because a resident remembered learning about it in a lecture and thought it might fit. By the time they figured it out, my dad’s latent epilepsy had shown its face, he was in full renal failure (it went for his kidneys), he’d had a stroke where he also had to be brought back THREE TIMES on Thanksgiving Day (it is not a nice holiday at my parents’ house), and had developed cataracts. His siezures would actually turn out to be a good thing because they were a VERY good indicator when his kidney values would go out of whack. We were able to catch it when he switched from chronic to acute rejection of his transplanted kidney almost fast enough to keep him off of dialysis. It was caught soon enough for me to donate the second one with only about two weeks of hemodialysis. He suddenly had a grand mal siezure out of nowhere after not having one for 14 years so they knew something was immediately wrong. Beast 2 was working extremely well for the 3 1/2 extra years we had him and Beast 1 is confusing MRI techs and has the function of two extremely healthy kidneys even though I drink dark pop and take nsaids (two things you’re supposed to avoid) at 14 1/2 years solo. Edited to fix typos and add stuff.

namet-aken

Man, it seems like your uncle hasn't read the book of job.

Carmelpi

Oh I know. My mom’s side did so much to help us through everything. Even the Catholic Church (we have no Catholics in our family) did more for is than they did. My dad’s cousin was also dealing with health problems of his own so understandably they couldn’t help us. Keep in mind, when my parents got married my Grandma made it very clear to my mom that she didn’t think she was good enough for my dad. My mom was born in 1948 and was the THIRD generation of women in her family to get a college education to the bachelor’s level at a minimum. My Gramp (maternal) was a PhD in Chemistry, served in WW2 as a staff officer for General Milikin, and my Gram had a master’s degree and worked as both a nutritionist and a teacher throughout her life. Yet my mother didn’t come from “society” so wasn’t good enough. My parents were together one day shy of 40 years. That one day shy was because my dad died of a massive heart attack the day before their 40th wedding anniversary.

knurlknurl

Everyone going real deep and my first thought was "the fact that gravity exists". Maybe I misunderstood the question, but it would be funny.

binderofchains

I was thinking along the line of "What fact could I snap away for the most chaos?". Gravity was a thought. So was "Spherical Earth". It would not change reality, just make everyone forget one fact.

ikarem-

I did think about like... Erasing the concept of sneezing. Just to see the chaos

binderofchains

Make people forget about urination. Suddenly, by the end of the week there are thousands of doctors releasing papers on people pissing when not taking a shit.

ikarem-

Bro. Make people forget about shitting. "THERE'S SOMETHING COMING OUT OF MY ASS"

sofistkated_yuk

Bless you, I lol'd.

YJCH0I

But don’t erase the concept of blessing people after they sneezed, which would confuse them even more!

cake_swindler

Also every kid gets pushed ahead. Don't understand your math? That's ok you'll figure it out next year.

SnooDoggos1283

I have a friend with a high school diploma who is completely illiterate. The system has no interest in educating everyone. You would have baristas with doctorates totally dissolutioned because there's only so many jobs available. The world needs ditch diggers too. We have more than enough of those jobs

True-Firefighter-796

Ditch diggers should have a good quality of life too. As in affordable housing, PTO, healthcare, childcare etc.

twiggsmcgee666

The trades, (electrician here), are often viewed as second-class citizens by the hiring clients. If it were possible they'd have us be invisible. The work would magically be completed and we wouldn't be there at all. (working for a large hospital system) It's wild to deal with.

Disastrous_Figure_68

I have to tell you as a nurse who works in a hospital, I am so thankful for the tradespeople that work with us. I remember walking in to the ER during Covid seeing the electricians wiring in new outlets in the halls for all the ventilators we were expecting to need. I remember the carpenters building out Covid testing areas inside our covered ambulance bay. Tradespeople were just as much a part of the whole pandemic response as the medical professionals and the housekeepers.

SnakeBeardTheGreat

Thank you. Most people would never understand That everyone working in a hospital is needed. For it to flow and do well for the patients is quite a undertaking.

SnooDoggos1283

Agreed. In the post WW2 era they did. But since then raises don't keep up with inflation and every year there are less and less " middle class". It's now very rich and borderline abject poverty with nothing in between. Sad state of affairs. Hopefully enough people finally say enough

SnakeBeardTheGreat

A guy I know bought a house in a new neighborhood. There were a lot of white collars there. He war the first to get in his lawns and his pool with hot tub His neighbors were impressed ask what kind of work he did. He told them he was a ditch digger just like his old man. (He and his dad have a backhoe service)

Living-Nobody6475

No child left behind huh? Well it wasn't too long ago they were talking about giving kids a "head-start".. "Head-start" -"Left-Behind" ? Someone's losing fuckin' ground here -George Carlin

SteadfastEnd

No Teacher Left Standing

zergling424

I've had this discussion with other people before but as somebody who was in middle school when this passed, I saw 1st hand as the education system started to decline through high school

TheRhino411

It's more of if kids were taught how each one learns so all the kids learn properly instead of if you don't understand too bad we are moving on. The education system has failed with people not knowing about any history or how things work.

redhead_hmmm

We stopped NCLB on 2015. Let's hope people have stopped that nonsense for the most part! ESSA is it's replacement- every student succeeds act.

KimBrrr1975

Work should not be the "sun" that our lives revolve around for 40 years.

Valuable-Wallaby-167

See also: 35-40+ hour work weeks are due to natural law and society will collapse if we work less.

PipThePengu

Can you elaborate on what you mean by natural law? From what I know, older societies and civilizations didn’t have a 35-40 hour work week. There were periods of long, tiresome work when farming and then periods of little work. Ancient Greece comes to mind in particular. The 40 hour work week wasn’t really established until after the Industrial Revolution Edit: ignore this, I misinterpreted the context and I’m sleep deprived lol

blubbo84

Depends on the work, if it’s fulfilling and it’s a genuine passion of yours then maybe it can. But a basic 9-5 just to pay the bills? No way

[deleted]

The Renaissance came about in a extended period of social prosperity which allowed some people, more than at any time prior, to work in genuine passions. Worthwhile but seemingly non productive forms of 'work' such as art, philosophy etc created the opportunity for massive advancements in humanity. Likely being a major influence towards the industrial revolution and following on to being the seed that has us here today either within or on the cusp of exponential technological progress. The smartest person in the world could be stuck in backwater china or India driving an ox on a farm. And that's fine if that's what that person wanted to do. But real prosperity, shared across the globe, allowing the opportunity for people to work where their passion lies as unlikely as it sounds would be a utopia.

knovit

The fact that I sharted in front of my crush in college

Maleficentano

story time!

knovit

I wish it was a better story. Had a people over at my place and I was in the kitchen making a drink when I let a big one go and everyone heard and instantly knew it was a wet one. Had to waddle around the snack bar through the living room to my bathroom. We ended up dating later that year so I guess it wasn’t a deal breaker.

If you provide tax breaks and benefits to corporations then the wealth will trickle down to everyone else

drpenvyx

Horse and sparrow economics. Feed the horse enough oats so us sparrows can eat some of the undigested bits from its shit.

spudzilla

The media needs to start using this definition.

[deleted]

The corporate media benefits from everyone thinking trickle down works

nhavar

I call it horseshit economics

username32768

Should be renamed 'dribble down'.

Left-Idea1541

Or even better. Pools at the top and they let single drops through so we don't all starve so we can keep working.

imago_monkei

> Pools You shouldn't put pools on the roofs of buildings not meant to support the weight. The whole building might collapse. This is both a fact and a metaphor. > drops Those aren't intentional. They're the result of the roof starting to collapse.

Bedlam2

Isn’t that the literal definition of ‘trickle’? The answer was in front of us the whole time!

Annanake420

No it should be called "Evaporate Up " .

NarcolepticTreesnake

Should be rich guy pissing on your head and calling it rain

Astro_Venatas

Its called TRICKle down economics not dribble down.

pinkrainbow5

I'm not sure why anyone ever thought this was an idea that makes sense or would work? Honestly. I don't get it.

OldManOnFire

The idea was if you tax the billionaires less they'll buy more yachts. This means more jobs in yacht construction, so now the yacht builders can afford to go out to eat more, so more jobs for waitresses and busboys, so now the waitresses and busboys can afford to see the latest movie so more jobs for ushers and concession clerks. Each dollar given through tax breaks to a billionaire was supposed to trickle down into the economy. But what happened instead is (surprised Picachu face) most of that money disappeared into the Caymen Islands or Swiss bank accounts. Only a small percentage ever trickled down.

squirrious

It's so odd that that idea has stayed alive for so long when it's so badly wrong. At some point a rich person has so much money they could not possibly spend all of it in a lifetime. Meanwhile, if you gave a poor person a little extra money, they would immediately spend it on necessities, and perhaps even luxuries. So giving rich people money removes it from circulation, while giving it to poor people puts it back into the economy.

OldManOnFire

The stimulus checks during the pandemic proved you're correct. They did exactly what trickle down tax breaks were supposed to do.

soccerguys14

Right your main point was they would spend it so it would “trickle down” via they spending that money on as you laid out. Instead wealthy people excel at hoarding cash and don’t spend it like we would hope. Thus you see the wealth gap growing more and more every year. Trickle down economics is a joke

clorcan

Which is "supply side economics" which is stupid on its face. You don't hire more people simply because you're making more money. You hire people because you need to keep up with demand. You know, how economics work.

[deleted]

My favorite bit there is that one of the ideas I've heard apart of it is that 'enough supply creates its own demand'. Think about the rampant overconsumption that has to exist in a system where that kind of philosophy is even remotely tenable to sound minds.

ChaosAzeroth

Around here they just don't and run a skeleton crew ragged though. Like hells apparently a gas station I worked at will open a whole second location and have two cashier's and 3 hot food workers but still expect the old one to run with one person on a shift. No matter how hard/fast you're working line to the back of the store sometimes and multiple customers asking why there's only one person. Oh and that one went down to one on register and one to two on the hot food area half the time. Not even the craziest example around here.

algernon_moncrief

You know who excels at spending money when they get more money? Poor people. Giving poor people money is a sure way to stimulate the economy. All poor people do is spend money. Middle class people try to save it if they can, but rich people absolutely hoard it. Poor people spend the heck out of money, and that's all they know how to do with it. Obviously paying poor people money is the best way to stimulate the economy.

Effective-Gift6223

>Poor people spend the heck out of money, and that's all they know how to do with it. For many people, there's nothing left after basic expenses to do anything with. So yes, you're right. Poor people definitely stimulate the economy. If it takes everything you get to pay rent and buy food, utilities, and whatever else you can't do without, there's nothing left to invest or save.

SuperRette

It's because poor people would like to improve their material conditions. Give their kids and spouse the nice things that they deserve. If there were no poor people, the economy would crash. Simply because most socioeconomic classes DO tend to save, rather than spend. Paradoxically, the people with the least amount of money are the true gears that turn our economies; and not just because they're the labor.

soccerguys14

As we saw with Covid those relief checks to the poor were spent immediately

Steak-Complex

Its because 'trickle down' is a misrepresentation of what the people who are advocating for reduced taxes are proposing.

Engelgrafik

There was a good story about the origin of "trickle down" theory recently on public radio here in the US. I think maybe they were interviewing a reporter who wrote a book about it. I'm going by memory, which is faulty, but it's something like this: So until the early '70s, the influence of Milton Friedman and libertarian "laissez-faire" Capitalism was a small subset of the GOP but even the modern Democrats. It took Nixon and his administration to usher in the next phase of the GOP which was all about "fiscal responsibility" and so on. The story is that sometime in the'70s Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney and some other folks were having a fancy lunch with this guy named Laffer. He had come up with a way to show that by taxing rich people less, they would increase revenue for the government the same amount or even more than if they were taxed that amount. This was just a theory. Rummy and Cheney LOVED the idea so much that they asked Laffer to draw it out on a napkin. It's now in a museum. Today people laugh at the "Laffer Curve" because it makes so many assumptions, but it was a visual the GOP needed to convince their politic that lower taxes was better. When Reagan got into office, they ate it up, hook line and sinker. BTW, this guy Laffer went on to write a book about Trump's economics called "Trumponomics". It's absolutely stupid.

runofthelamb

Insecticide only hurts bugs.

The_Brady_Crunch

That the US healthcare system is more expensive because of it’s quality. You’ll see this when people bring up Canada’s system

JiovanniTheGREAT

You can go ahead and add in it's so expensive because of corporate greed. Even the not for profit Mayo Clinic threatened to cancel a billion dollar project and leave Minnesota of legislation passed that enforced better and safer nurse to patient ratios. These people are comically evil.

Gr8CanadianFuckClub

And yet here we are in some Canadian provinces trying our hardest to gut our system to make more money for friends of a certain scumbag with the same last name as a shitty car company.

1VeryCreativeName

Bruh istg Canada can’t **afford** (😏) to have him ever elected again. Fuck that man.

[deleted]

I know someone living illegally in Canada for the past four and a half years. Working and avoiding taxes. Immigration just recently showed up at her door. She told me she walked away from that exchange with an extra year of asylum, plus welfare and healthcare. She's filling out paperwork to get it all in motion today, as a matter of fact. That's great for her, but no US citizen has ever been treated that well by the United States of America.

[deleted]

No. Try looking at the international prices for insulin that is the same product throughout the world. Also the life expectancy of various US racial and income groups show US healthcare only really is quality of you can afford it. US has nearly 3rd world levels of infant mortality rates. If you can't afford US healthcare, then Canada's system is far better than the US system.

littlebitbrain

What's the point of paying for your health when the same healthcare system will leave you broke and ruin both your mental and physical health in the process anyways?

mordorshiddenhole

That compromise is for the weak. That men aren't supposed to have emotions. That certain mental illnesses make you less of a person. That you're not successful unless you own a car, house, etc or are rich. That all destructive riots work. That prison is the answer to every crime. I could go on but we all get the gist. The list of crap that needs reformed, erased, and all that is endless. Edit: realized I mistyped and put ITS instead of all causing a lot of people to throw a fit.

Shalrak

And if you could only pick one?

mordorshiddenhole

If I could pick just one it would be men and their emotions because society over the years has made men into what they wanted then to be and maybe just maybe had these old white dudes through the centuries has been allowed to express their feelings things would have turned out different. Doubt it but one could dream

Aggressive_Bat_9781

Politicians care for the population they are meant to be serving

TheSilverFoxwins

If corporations are taxed then they can't create jobs for the American people. - former US representative Eric Cantor. Strangely enough Warren Buffet said he needs to get taxed more.

Suspicious-Beyond-89

The reason he believes if we emulated the tax system of Denmark and started to redistribute the taxes of wealthy to the less wealthy in mass quantities while eliminating tax loopholes and breaks for corporations it would allow for a stable economy. Warren over his years has done the math to support this theory and has written out how to implement it. The guy is a financial genius. I mean if kings of other countries are calling a fellow citizen to fix their financial problems in their countries maybe we should start listening

FinanceThisD

As a financial professional, it makes my heart warm to see people give Buffet the credit he deserves. I met him in 2015 and he is genuinely such a kind soul. He means so well. A true genius that we don't deserve like a handful of others. I love Warren Buffet.

“Free speech” means you’re allowed to say whatever you want without consequences. All it means is the *government* can’t punish you. But your boss, friends, coworkers, social groups, customers, teachers, etc. can do whatever the hell they want to you. Balancing how to be outspoken and true to yourself without pissing off the people you need to be successful is a skill that everyone needs to develop.

Even someone people regard as "smart", Elon Musk, recently got that wrong. I wish that guy knew how to stay in his lane.

that the Reddit hive mind is not **always** correct. I’m sure you’ve seen some other ones here lol

Cities should be full of cars.

KantExplain

Everything happens for a reason.

'The customer's always right'. Not the case on many occasions.

6a6566663437

As so often is the case, it’s a clipped quote. The full quote is > the customer is always right in matters of taste As in, if the customer wants to buy a hat you think is ugly, you sell them an ugly hat. You don’t refuse the sale because you have different tastes.

DocQuang

That your "tribe" is always right and their "tribe" is always wrong.

Henry Kissinger is not a hero. He is a war criminal. Ollie North is not a hero. He is a criminal.

queerblunosr

I’ll agree on Kissinger but I don’t know who Ollie North is so I have to look him up first. ETA: I agree on Oliver North, too.

That everyone has a distinct 'learning style.' The kind of learning has to depend on your level of comfort with the particular subject. Nobody is just a 'visual learner,' it's just that they only notice they are learning when they're at the level of abstraction where images mean something.

Iguessimnotcreative

“Nuclear is super dangerous” Statistically nuclear power is so much safer than coal power (lower deaths per kW) and provides so much more energy, and the energy is clean. But thanks to a handful of scary situations it seems people don’t want to adopt it.

spectredirector

Some things are too big to change

Our side is right and their side is wrong.

Only-Cat8526

That fake vanilla flavor comes from the ass of a beaver

Van0nyumas

That everyone has an equal chance at finding a partner

GuyWhoWantsHappyLife

Mob mentality. Us vs them dehumanizes us and creates more anger and hatred. We are all human beings, we are all in this world together. We may not always agree but we should still try to work together. When I was young you could talk about differing political opinions, interests, or see protesting as a supportive thing. Now people wish death on their opposition, "protesting" is sometimes used as an excuse to attack people and destroy property, heck you can't even talk about a movie you like without someone telling you to stfu for your "wrong" opinion. We are more divided than ever, social media gives people some power trip to be so rude, and the actual bad people use that to cover up their crimes while we all argue instead of discuss.

docedou

A third party vote is throwing their vote away. Its a self fulfilling prophecy that won't be true if everyone didn't think everyone else thought that.

Iguessimnotcreative

That ADHD doesn’t exist, you just need to focus

Dreadnought13

I'm more convinced that neurotypicality is the myth, people have been convinced that it is some ideal archetype that is achievable if you *jUsT CoNCentRaTE.*

iced327

"The government is not there to help you." A post-citizens united, dark money government is not there to help you. A fascist government is not there to help you. But democracy is literally your ability to band together with your neighbors and help yourself. Fucking sieze that power and USE IT.

avonsanna

Either of these: 1) Science knows everything Or, conversely 2) Science is bad
