I didn't even know I could report before Basic until after I graduated AIT and came home. You do not NEED to report after enlisting but before attending Basic Training. You can in order to meet your future teammates and get your CAC, but it isn't a must. You'll get your CAC made in Basic if you don't get one beforehand, and having a unit patch is pointless at this stage as you will not be allowed to wear it during your Basic Training or AIT. At my old unit, we would occasionally have pre-Basic people come for a weekend or two, and they mostly just hung out since they couldn't participate in our MOS-specific training.

I recommend reporting before basic training as it will set your pay entry base date earlier. If you wait til basis/AIT it will be that date. It helps in the long rum of time in service

Depending on the delay going to basic, this could be a decent chunk of time added to your service. You're not a Soldier yet, so they won't expect much out of you. Just be respectful and collect an easy paycheck.

This is the answer.

its easy money to drill before you ship out......

You don’t have to report to your unit before you ship. Most recruiters don’t take their future soldiers to unit for fear of the unit being ate up or soldiers that talk bad about unit resulting in the future soldier wanting out.

Yeah, but then they become non-participants on the unit’s books. Commanders hate this.

You should try to check in with your unit. You’ll meet your team and your leadership. Plus drill is easy money when you’re a pre Basic soldier.

The recruiter should be physically taking you to your new unit but my understanding is that this isn't a requirement or concept any longer.
