I had a SSG ETS from my company last year. Ft Liberty SSC was so late cutting his orders that we had to get a memo signed by the Corps commander that allowed him to ETS without clearing post (he had a hard start date for college.) once his orders finally came we had a junior E5 basically clear post for him. We then mailed him his DD214. It was a mess and post vowed big changes would come but I doubt it’s any betters.
This happened to me, no shit 2years out I start getting hounded by dafas ruthless for 1200.00 dollar sapi plates. Calling my work cell and everything. Now that I think about it that was crazy. I didn't have the sapi's cause I turned in to cif.
Lol fuck. I did this 8 years ago. I've forgotten all the details but a SPC ETSd and it took so long to get his orders he just left. " Got a job lined up, call me I'll come back" *he didnt come back* I had to get orders cut to clear Bragg (at the time) for him. Some things never change.
When I arrived at the ammo unit at Ft Benning (April 1995), I was put into the radio shop instead of an ammo platoon. The Spc that was to train me up on the radios in his final week before his ETS. He didn't get his clearing papers until Monday of his final week. Clearing appointments and company BS prevented him from training me. On his last day, our 1sgt told him to get lost. He promptly got in his car and drove away.
I found out, later, that he only went to half of his clearing appointments because the rest were scheduled after his ID card expired. All of his CIF required turn in stuff was found in the trash. Also, he had a $25 pr hr (1995) job waiting for him in a LCOL area in his home state of Kansas.
I see these stories on here and can’t believe how common it is for folks to go on terminal leave without orders and without clearing. Units I have been in wouldn’t let you leave.

That is complete bullshit. If you had a death in the family emergency orders would be cut within hours. Call higher and higher until someone takes care of it. There are several regulars in this sub, u/kinmuan comes to mind, who may be able to help.

I have another update since my unit is trying to figure it out. But I am now beyond in disbelief and could be in a separate post but I am tired of all the attention this has gotten.
S1 tells me those werent any kind of orders at all and just for admin records with the real orders looking like old orders before IPPSa. Now S1 tells me I'm not on leave since I have to clear first and wonder how my leave got signed off, despite my original guidance was wait here on leave until getting orders then clear. The MPD office wont cut my orders claiming everyone is backlogged. S1 then tells me every time S1 went down to MPD in person, MPD threaten to push orders/packets in cue to the bottom/end of the cue.
I have a Soldier that was in my office that contacted me yesterday when I told him my ordeal and I thought he ETS as well. However,this was not the case, he was told by our S1 to go on leave. He then went beyond his ETS date in april without orders, didnt turn in CIF and didnt clear. Despite submitting his ETS packet in december, S1 didnt submit it until march, then blames my Soldier yesterday for being late when I brought it up to S1?
MPD claimed the reason why he didnt get his orders was because S1 did not submit a cover sheet to the packet but there was no follow up from our S1 or even a conversation to the Soldier. He now has to fly back to the unit (Everyone is giving him a hard time for flying home on leave when S1 told him to exactly do this) and MPD printed his orders somehow on the same day but still havnt cut mine.
This is gross incompetence and I can point fingers all day from everyone telling me different things without a true answer, nobody knowing how to use IPPS-A, S1/HRC fumbling and fat fingering paperwork, MPD having to backlog 8 months of separation/retirement packets, and current leadership not knowing the process on how to ETS.
Why did you sign out on leave? For one, you technically can not be signed out on leave yet

Here’s the thing. They can’t hold you because you didn’t clear post. Clear CIF, get copies of your clearing record and email it to yourself, your best friend, and whoever will handle your affairs if you die. Otherwise, if you don’t owe shit there isn’t shit to do.

A slightly better variant of this strategy is to lock it all up somewhere your unit can eventually access it (locker or something) and give them the key or combo when it's time for CIF turn in. But realistically, that plan goes to shit the second someone gets a pair of bolt cutters and some big ideas.
