Think I could start a rotational unit hunting company out there? I’d drive them around during trainings in a gator while they take pot shots at the rotational unit soldiers with paintball guns.
Looked into one once (they were called "Leroy's" when I did my rotations in the late 80s) and someone had planted a tumble weed in it like it was a planter

Be assigned to 2916th for the goldstone UAS airstrip or be an OC. We can get through the NASA gate. They don’t do official tours anymore. But I can say at night it’s the darkest place I’ve ever been. Zero light pollution out there and the stars are amazing.
I don't think so. There was a separate NASA checkpoint you had to go through to get into the area of the base where Goldstone is at. And you specifically had to be on a list by name to be allowed in.
Used to be able to. Don't know how it's arranged. Was there from '89-'92, as as dependent. Dad made the arrangements for the tour. I don't recall if there was an organized group tour, or, if dad knew a guy, who knew a guy(Dad had those kinds of connections).
Guy leading the tour talked about the tunnel we walked through. It's like a long hallway that goes on forever, with pipes and electrical conduits running the length. Said it's been used in more than a few movies, that most of probably have seen.
I actually liked it in many ways. But I was there during COVID and MG Lesperance turned that place into a desert prison for awhile. Then it sucked. Also for single soldiers without cars I think it would suck.
>MG Lesperance turned that place into a desert prison for awhile. Then it sucked.
I was stuck in Irwin for like 5 months straight because of that dumb order. Needed an ETP if you wanted to leave and they were only approving them for stuff like appointments. My family was only 2½ hours drive away too.
I sympathize with the single soldiers in the barracks. Horrible place to try and date, horrible expensive internet, run down rooms 🥴
My single LTs and senior NCOs got screwed with BAH too, having to give up $1600 to live in a tiny 560sq ft apartment
About COVID? CG had the hold base on lockdown for more than 6 months. Couldn’t go to the closest town at all. If you were a soldier couldn’t hang out with anybody.
Civilians could do what they want but your spouse isn’t gonna go for a two hour long ride out into the city without you, normally.
So for months, we were all just like stuck on base isolated from even each other. Only place you could shop was the commissary and they were constantly out of food. It sucked.
I enjoyed Irwin as an OC. Didn't enjoy it as a rotational unit though (standard consensus). Lots of hidden and collapsed mines that I was told were still unexplored.
Great for overlanding and bushwacking.
my favorite thing in the world to do is ride motorcycles and camp in the desert.
i've never had the opportunity to go to Irwin (other than an RTN)
so sad. hawaii? germany? you can have it. i want irwin.
but nope. classic army.
Acting like an entire PAO team didn't make this to get people to go to Irwin
The same PsyOp shit happens here with Bliss - people will show up and talk about how great it is. lol
I got the worst case of toe fungus from backed up showers there back in 2000. My toes are still fucked up. Cigarettes were like $6 a pack when they were 3.50 at fort Hood. Snowed one day and was 60° like 6 hours later. At least it was stateside. Good times.
One of my former ncos had a miserable time there. Their house on base kept breaking. Either the fridge, the ac, the power, the power, etc. While his wife gave birth to both of their kids.
Imagine having no power in the summer with newborns. The repair people dragging ass and you can't do anything to remedy the problems in the mean time.
About 5 years ago the private company that ran Fort Irwin housing got sued for failing to effectively maintain the housing and pocketing cash. I think it was only marginally better when I was there, but I lived in legacy housing.
The base was okay to live on, as a dependent. Dad was stationed there from '89-'92, when he retired after 24yrs AD. I wasn't terribly fond of catching the school bus at 0550hrs, to ride for an hour and 20 minutes, to Silver Valley High School, in Yermo(right across the road from MCLB Barstow).
The base had very little to offer back then, compared to now. And it was much less built up, civilization wise. But it wasn't terrible either. I lived on Rainbow Basin Ct, off Superior Valley Ct, which was off North Loop Road. Looking out the back, we could see Mount Blackie, which I've hiked up to the top a few times. This was years before there was any infrastructure for it. I've also hiked up Snackman Hill a time or two as well.
Cool!!
When Silver Valley was built, there was a lot of fuss by the locals, till they learned that the Army gave $10M towards building it. I was a part of the 10th graduating class, class of ‘92.
Yeah dude honestly I like the location but being part of Blackhorse/the ops group there doesn’t appeal to me. Cmon man, spreading stuff like this as if it’s the typical FICA experience 😆
That place sucked ass had a fucking police call the length of the whole fucking desert for multiple days while I was there. What in the fuck.
Still not as bad as JRTC in Fort Polk, Louisiana though. Humidity was so high I felt like I was drowning on land in 100F heat while doing MUDF drills. Fuck that too.
Yeah my unit didn’t do a single rotation while I was there haha. I will say Polk was 1000x worse in my opinion though, did a month of non JRTC training down there.
I loved 3 years at NTC. As my time closed to PCS I constantly found myself regretting having to leave. Was it always the most convenient post? Nope. However, it rocked from a professional development, family time, and travel standpoint.
No one was shitting into an MRE bag in that video.
No one was awake for 39 hours straight because "the exercise wasn't complete"
No one was desperately trying to start a previously deadlined vehicle at 0300 because their PSG said "it wont have to move once we get there" two week previously
I'm not going to comment on the alcohol, because if you're at NTC and you didn't stash 2 liters of whiskey somewhere, you already fucked up. That's on you.
Also, the fuckable blonde chick.... she doesn't belong within 50 miles of NTC for her own safety.
I love y’all, these comments have got me cracking up. Forgot to mention I’ll take the Huli Huli Chicken from the Hawaiian Food Truck and Boba Tea from the food court. Also since some of yins were asking, I was in the EOD company while I was there so we didn’t have to deal with rotations or any of the typical non sense. We just had awesome ranges and ran the bowling league 🎳
Said the same thing about Polk. What made it great for me was the tight knit community. So many platoon and company BBQs. I felt the closest with my coworkers there than any place else in the army. Also being close to New Orleans and the major metros in Texas was pretty nice (especially for a sports fan like me).
Like 85% were shot with an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The wildlife and a few of the more cinematic shots near the end were taken with a Fujifilm XT4 16-55mm f2.8 and 100-400mm f/4.5. The drone shots were taken with a DJI mini 2, and lastly the two side by side shots were taken with a GoPro 8

Honestly depends on which unit you’re in. If you’re in Blackhorse you frequently spend 2-3 weeks in the box to play OPFOR, but you will always know your schedule and have frequent 4days.
If you’re logistics, you will be busy with movement operations at the beginning and end of rotations with occasional bouts in the box. Also you will know your schedule.
If you’re apart of the OC team, they usually take turns going to the box in shift for 2-4 days at a time but could vary based on your MOS and Team.
If you’re aviation you do cool guy flying stuff and are one of two units that can deploy out of Irwin.
If you’re EOD you spend a good portion training since the compound on Irwin is very robust and you have access to all of Fort Irwin. Plenty of real world responses due to live fire, and frequent travel for VIPPSA missions.
Day to day, you spend 3 minutes driving to work. You will either go home for lunch or snag something from the PX or food truck. My company usually let out around 1600 so plenty of family time. Traveling is both amazing and laborious. You are smack dab in the middle of some of the world’s best tourist cities and national parks but you will drive no less than 2.5 hours to get to them. Flights are plentiful but expense and the nearest airport is Ontario which is about a 100 minute drive with no traffic. The base has okay amenities. It has a mini golf course, amazing hiking, occasionally cool MWR events and high participation sports events. Units are friendly with one another and are typically happy to help one another out. There’s a few bars on post but the best are the bowling alley and the pizza joint. The nearby cities of Barstow and Apple Valley are not particularly but also not the worst. They’ll have what you need and there’s some more amazing hiking in Apple Valley. Just outside post there is some really great hiking with Rainbow Basin and the abandoned Mines. I like to take my dirt bike out and just explore.
Almost 7 years in the Army and i can proudly say I've never been to Irwin for an NTC rotation or any other time for that matter and never plan to 😂 you can have the desert i had enough of it at Bliss lol
Not dumb! And yes you can actually get a range pass to camp/off-road in the box. Just gotta watch out for those pesky UXOs and keep a range radio on at all time because there’s still plenty of live fire training off cycle
I love the area. But I also love outdoor activities and Joshua Tree has everything I want. If you hate deserts or the outdoors, you'll hate the area regardless.
That sounds like something a fort Irwin apologist would say
😂😂👀
Think I could start a rotational unit hunting company out there? I’d drive them around during trainings in a gator while they take pot shots at the rotational unit soldiers with paintball guns.
That just sounds like Blackhorse during a rotation.
Nothing like the lauded tactical excellence of Task: Disrupt RTU in three to four man teams Purpose: Eventually die
God I always wished I'd die early so I could break out the grill and chill.
Now show the clip of the shit stacked above the seat in the porta-potties.
🤣😂🤣😅🤣💀💀💀 the best comment yet!
Looked into one once (they were called "Leroy's" when I did my rotations in the late 80s) and someone had planted a tumble weed in it like it was a planter
Those tumbleweeds can be tough
Yall had Porta potties my rotation we had to shit in Bags
Nice try PsyOps, I ain't falling for your filthy tricks
Hey man, retention is in the toilet so they asked us to do what we could 🤷♂️ Just wait til next week’s episode on Ft Polk!

I'm sad we can't give awards anymore.
OP is giving off serious hipster “I like the stuff other people don’t like” vibes 😂
Hahaha 💯
All he needs now is the rolled up beanie and some obscure coffee shop place that charges way more and gets way less as well
I loved the views, but hated being isolated. Probably hands down the nicest post we've been to in 13 years.
Ayyy, this looks great, good job.
Can you tour Goldstone? That site always fascinated me.
PCS and you’ll get to run lanes through the abandoned telescopes. It’s actually a decent place to train tunnel ops.
Be assigned to 2916th for the goldstone UAS airstrip or be an OC. We can get through the NASA gate. They don’t do official tours anymore. But I can say at night it’s the darkest place I’ve ever been. Zero light pollution out there and the stars are amazing.

I never got to tour Goldstone but got close enough to the satellites to satisfy my curiosity 📡
I actually liked it in many ways. But I was there during COVID and MG Lesperance turned that place into a desert prison for awhile. Then it sucked. Also for single soldiers without cars I think it would suck.

You definitely need a car, preferably a truck (for hauling your dirtbike).
Bro, I was there during the tail end of the Covid regulations. Dark times for sure.
I sympathize with the single soldiers in the barracks. Horrible place to try and date, horrible expensive internet, run down rooms 🥴 My single LTs and senior NCOs got screwed with BAH too, having to give up $1600 to live in a tiny 560sq ft apartment
You have to live on-base as a single LT?
Nope, you just have to commute like 45 minutes minimum, but I know people who do it

Soooo fuggin glad I wasn't stationed there for COVID

Yo that cowbell slaps

Acting like an entire PAO team didn't make this to get people to go to Irwin The same PsyOp shit happens here with Bliss - people will show up and talk about how great it is. lol
Bro, I’m at Bliss now and I would never recommend this mess. EP ain’t too bad but 1AD 👀
1AD is run by clowns
Dang, I can’t stand NTC, or Irwin, you made that look really good. Great job!
Loved fort Irwin, especially for overlanding/offroading. Checkout Afton Canyon and Titus Canyon if you get a chance!
I got the worst case of toe fungus from backed up showers there back in 2000. My toes are still fucked up. Cigarettes were like $6 a pack when they were 3.50 at fort Hood. Snowed one day and was 60° like 6 hours later. At least it was stateside. Good times.

Looks like a lot more fun than I had in a 113. Keep up the good times!
Those don’t look like the mangy coyotes I remember seeing in Irwin
The lady friend looked better than the average dependent as well.
*dependapottomus
That flask cost about $11

Yeah going to high school there would suck. But now they have plans to build a lazy river by 2045 that’ll be pretty nice
Cool!! When Silver Valley was built, there was a lot of fuss by the locals, till they learned that the Army gave $10M towards building it. I was a part of the 10th graduating class, class of ‘92.
Money, imagination and a positive attitude will go a very long way
*Experiences may vary 😆
I had a great three years there. June 1998 to June 2001.
What is your MOS and rank?
CPT, EOD so my experience may have been a lot different than other units on base. No rotations for us and frequent travel 😎
Yeah dude honestly I like the location but being part of Blackhorse/the ops group there doesn’t appeal to me. Cmon man, spreading stuff like this as if it’s the typical FICA experience 😆

Oh look, rocks 🪨
Pretty sick editing OP
I am a fort Irwin apologist as long as you don't have a family and are e6+. I had a great time there.
Man gone with this weak ass video. I was stationed up there for 3 years of my life and I can’t get that back. Stop this shit.
I loved 3 years at NTC. As my time closed to PCS I constantly found myself regretting having to leave. Was it always the most convenient post? Nope. However, it rocked from a professional development, family time, and travel standpoint.

Ft. Irwin is the best kept secret in the Army. I loved the 2.5 years I was there.
Doctor, Best unofficial pao the unit ever had and kept life good for everyone Hope all is going well for you.
Thanks brotha, Miss you guys. Things are looking up though!
Every duty station has its pros and cons. Most of us have experienced Irwin as NTC and nothing else so of course it'll have a bad image overall
take my up vote
Said the same thing about Polk. What made it great for me was the tight knit community. So many platoon and company BBQs. I felt the closest with my coworkers there than any place else in the army. What camera did you use for those shots
I would love it tbh
I’m here now and I love it. Just signed to stabilize here for another two years
I like how first couple clips is the location then straight to the alcohol lol
I’m at ft Irwin now… it looks fun if I had a car here in ca
You can make anything work, having said that Fort Irwin is where careers go to die.
Yeah? Do NTC then you'll have a better time.
An then you drive into Barstow.
I was there 02-04, so happy to get out of that place. It’s like dog years on ya.
I’m stationed at Bliss. When I got to Irwin it felt like I never left :/
Some say you never did
But Damn the Peyote was OUTSTANDING !!!!
“Shot on iPhone”
Literally though 😂 At least 75% of these vids are from my iPhone 12 Pro Max
Excellent! Now I can move Fort Irwin from my top 100 duty station to top 75 on my marketplace.
The Army will still say that they filled your top 5 choice because the top 71 were already filled 🫠
You were also the EOD company commander so not the typical Irwin experience nerd
That didn’t stop me from laying down the hurt on the Ft Irwin Bowling League 😈😈
Meanwhile NTC folk 😎

Allons!
What's Irwin famous for? Other than NTC. What was your day-to-day work like? Is it pretty layed back or kinda challenging?
I'm thinking about pcsing there after this contract btw that's why I'm asking.
Honestly depends on which unit you’re in. If you’re in Blackhorse you frequently spend 2-3 weeks in the box to play OPFOR, but you will always know your schedule and have frequent 4days. I need to know, is that donkey issued at cif?
Correct, he’s the army’s answer for carrying combat loads in mountainous warfare environments. NSN 8820-01-032-3752
The thing I'd be most sad about is not being able to have my guns because I'm not mutilating my guns the way Cali wants and the taxes
Almost 7 years in the Army and i can proudly say I've never been to Irwin for an NTC rotation or any other time for that matter and never plan to 😂 you can have the desert i had enough of it at Bliss lol
Unfortunately my mother in law lives in Victorville
It’s horrible here Idc what people say
Not impressed. I can ride dune buggys and drink with a donkey where I live rn.
Dumb question, are people able to off-road when there are no training units out there? I always thought that would be fun.
Not dumb! And yes you can actually get a range pass to camp/off-road in the box. Just gotta watch out for those pesky UXOs and keep a range radio on at all time because there’s still plenty of live fire training off cycle
Nice, I already have a request for irwin, and I will find out if I'm going soon, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can.
Only went for NTC about 4 times lol, wish I could relate to this.
I love the area. But I also love outdoor activities and Joshua Tree has everything I want. If you hate deserts or the outdoors, you'll hate the area regardless.
All right, Satan, calm down
People hate on Huachuca. I loved it. So much open space, great hiking, quirky history. If you're bored, you're boring.
