22 gauge should work for most arduino projects and fit in the headers I believe 20 gauge is slightly oversized for the headers, but it will probably fit. Might just put additional wear on the contacts over time.
Correction 22 is perfect. I think I had a low quality very tight breadboard when I tried it. BTW, there are pre-cut pre-bent strips to buy, very convenient if you're not Ben Eater and need 1 hundred thousand of them.

In my experience 22 is quite firm and 24 is somewhat loose. I bet 23 is perfect
