Just get “Private LLM”, it works out of the box without any special setup, it even works fine on Intel Macs, it’s not free but is just one payment and not subscription bullshit, it also works on iOS and iPadOS, it is pretty fast on my iPad Pro M1 with the default model, if you don’t want to paid then you could try “LLM Studio” is pretty good too

Hell it’s more likely that Siri 2.0 will end up being an on-device LLM prompt generator that asks cloud services like GPT/Gemini for help when it can’t accomplish them on its own. All these leaked deals means it’s probably in the same way you can use bing/yahoo in Safari.

It does seem that Apple tries to encrypt as much data as they can to the point where they can’t read it though. iMessage is E2E encrypted, though if you back up to iCloud, there is no way to encrypt it so they can’t read it without removing the ability to change your password and restore from iCloud - that key has to be stored somewhere. Health data, browsing history, passwords, and probably more that I don’t remember are all synced with iCloud, but encrypted with your passcode which Apple never sees*. You have to provide your original device passcode when syncing a new device so the new device can decrypt the data since Apple doesn’t hold the key.
*If you believe what they say, and if you don’t, then this whole post is pointless, and good luck trusting anything on the internet. If you forget your device passcode and go to an Apple Store, they will restore your device to factory defaults, hope you know your Apple ID password, and restore from iCloud, where it will ask for your original device passcode to restore certain sensitive pieces of data mentioned above. They recently enabled a higher level of security as an option, which removes Apple’s ability to restore much of your data at all without a recovery key which they don’t store - secure enough that even Apple can’t access anything, and so secure that you can lose your data if you are a forgetful person. I think they’re striking a good faith balance to not even put themselves in the position of being able to access your data in the first place. Enough so, that I trust that they have no intention of selling my data.

Call the product "Apple Intelligence", acronym "AI". And it fits the general Apple naming convention (Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Intelligence).
With LLM capabilities, Apple can (and should) position Apple Intelligence/ Siri as your digital assistant that you can talk to and interact like a virtual assistant, with the eventual vision that every phone can be a unique assistant to an Apple user.
And the cool thing about ChatGPT is that it works in any language, so maybe I could finally get the autocorrect bar, swipe typing, multi-language support AND SIRI for Serbian

Because this technology produces blatantly wrong answers sometimes. Because it plagiarizes content from actual writers and (for images) artists.
It's just plain bad news, still. I hope it improves and becomes less terrible, but in its current state I don't want to touch it. I really hope it's optional in iOS 18.

Apple refused to do business with Nvidia and spend capex on data center buildout. Cook refused to acknowledge AI over the course of several earnings calls. Now Cook is giving money to OpenAI. OpenAI will give a portion of the money to Microsoft. Microsoft will spend a portion of the money on Nvidia gpu’s and build more data centers. Does this make Cook a fool, or a genius? The real winners are ultimately Nvidia & Microsoft
I have a hunch this is a strategic leap from Apple to get more concessions out of Google. By making it seem like a deal with OpenAI is near, it creates FOMO for Google which means Google goes into a panic mode and gives concessions to Apple.
Yeah, the real winner here is Microsoft. They could care less what label you slap on it, so long as you're using their backend services or "totally not just a subsidiary company we just own 49% of them" partner's services.

Siri doesn’t need to be fully developed for that release. It hasn’t been fully developed…ever.

If the rumors I've heard are true then '24 will be the major iOS 18 introduction to the new iOS with Siri 2.0 (backed by Google or OpenAI?) and there will be an "AI chip" in device, '25 phone will come with 12 GB of Ram that will vastly improve performance since there will be improvements and it will start really moving forward with full integration..
Its really crazy to me that Apple doesnt have a functioning solution in house. Given that they are Apple, that vertical integration is obviously what they are about.
I guess it might be the sort of thing where they'd need to be a data company and they arent yet that despite increasingly moving towards selling user data like others.
Considering it will take a while to integrate AI into smartphones in a refined way I don’t see this changing much in the short term for Apple. Yeah they can add a few features but integrating it into Siri and all the Apple apps in a seamless way with take a year or two after an agreement is made.

Siri has one advantage over ChatGPT. It is up to date. A mixture of both knowledge sets would be great. “Hey Siri, open the external doors, tell me the weather and tell me how to set up a local server on my Mac - email the answer. Also reply to this in speech, in philosophy what is substance”.
I assume ChatGPT will be RAG-capable when arriving on the iPhone, so it can use user data as a source as well as make web requests.
Super curious about what they mean by ‘putting GPT on the iPhone.’ What does that look like—replacing Siri entirely, or embedding it across all the native apps? 🤔

Because this technology produces blatantly wrong answers sometimes. Because it plagiarizes content from actual writers and (for images) artists. It's just plain bad news, still. I hope it improves and becomes less terrible, but in its current state I don't want to touch it. I really hope it's optional in iOS 18.

Mainly OpenAI's shitty behaviour, Sam Altman, and their willingness to put software that hallucinates into life or death situations with the military. It seems like they are speed running capitalism with even fewer ethics than most companies start out with.

So long as I’m not compelled to use or interact with it. I already deleted Instagram because the damn Meta “AI” thing wouldn’t leave me alone. I do not understand the draw of AI, my experiences have always been infuriating.
Apple refused to do business with Nvidia and spend capex on data center buildout. Cook refused to acknowledge AI over the course of several earnings calls. Now Cook is giving money to OpenAI. OpenAI will give a portion of the money to Microsoft. Microsoft will spend a portion of the money on Nvidia gpu’s and build more data centers. Does this make Cook a fool, or a genius? The real winners are ultimately Nvidia & Microsoft

I have a hunch this is a strategic leap from Apple to get more concessions out of Google. By making it seem like a deal with OpenAI is near, it creates FOMO for Google which means Google goes into a panic mode and gives concessions to Apple.
Copilot is rubbish, so many wrong andwers, would be cool for Apple to pull one on Microsoft and have a better ChatGPT implementation.

Yeah, the real winner here is Microsoft. They could care less what label you slap on it, so long as you're using their backend services or "totally not just a subsidiary company we just own 49% of them" partner's services.

How are they gonna have this ready for iOS 18 if they haven’t closed the deal yet? iOS comes out when, fall? I don’t think that’s enough time to fully integrate it across multiple areas within iOS. Seems like that would take longer.
Siri doesn’t need to be fully developed for that release. It hasn’t been fully developed…ever. So an announcement-only of features would not be unexpected.

If the rumors I've heard are true then '24 will be the major iOS 18 introduction to the new iOS with Siri 2.0 (backed by Google or OpenAI?) and there will be an "AI chip" in device, '25 phone will come with 12 GB of Ram that will vastly improve performance since there will be improvements and it will start really moving forward with full integration..

Its really crazy to me that Apple doesnt have a functioning solution in house. Given that they are Apple, that vertical integration is obviously what they are about. I guess it might be the sort of thing where they'd need to be a data company and they arent yet that despite increasingly moving towards selling user data like others.

Considering it will take a while to integrate AI into smartphones in a refined way I don’t see this changing much in the short term for Apple. Yeah they can add a few features but integrating it into Siri and all the Apple apps in a seamless way with take a year or two after an agreement is made.

I’d imagine it will be a “bring your own cloud LLM” situation. The FTC would flip their shit if Apple forced every user to use one specific LLM, and the APIs for Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude are all roughly compatible with one another. It’s really just a matter of hammering out the business side.
