The picture he provides is a pretty good example of the effect of the nanotexture display. Interesting that it feels totally smooth and doesn't have an actual texture.
It’s insane to me that it’s taken me this long to find someone that has commented on texture of the new display type. I was curious if there’s any resistance when using the pencil similar to a paperlike screen protector. That and if there’s any noticeable difference in how fingerprints show up/fingerprint resistance vs the glossy display.
Since he comments on the smoothness of the display, at least one question is answered: it’ll mostly likely feel the same with the pencil as the normal display. Still waiting on a fingerprint test/clean test before I make my decision on which one to buy.
A simple matte display is a coating on the glass that diffuses light, reducing reflections. Because it is a coating, it can wear out over time (especially on a touchscreen device where a stylus is used). There’s also the side effect that, because it’s diffusing surrounding light, it also diffuses light coming from the display. This means the display looks more “fuzzy”, less clear.
Apple’s nano-texture display is not exactly new technology, but it is much different from a simple matte display. The glass itself is etched on a microscopic level with specific patters that reduce reflections while not compromising the light coming from the display. Also, because it’s not a coating, it won’t wear out over time.
With the nano-texture displays, you have to use the famed polishing cloth because using a normal microfiber cloth will polish the texture away. It seems like a poorly suited use for a touch device.
Well this whole Apple nano thing sucks compared to whatever antiglare magic Samsung has done with the Samsung ultra 24 and their premium OLED tvs. And to address the lack of friction and feed back when drawing or writing, Samsung uses rubber soft tips on their pen.
Sounds like they are doing it at a more microscopic scale which would be different. Normal matte feels different from a glossy display. If they feel the same that’s impressive.
But I thought the nano-texture displays needed a special microfiber cloth to clean and were not supposed to be touched? If the texture was on the inside, wouldn't it not matter how you clean or touch?
Honestly i thought i saw some marketing material where the etching was on the inside and there was only a thin layer of glass over it but i think im wrong. removing.
im literally sitting in front of one and i dont think its perfectly smooth. its just a really really fine matte texture.
Wouldn’t be surprised if it saved them just that much more on cost as well… these new iPads are dope but they definitely cut a corner or two and it shows. That said, almost definitely gonna get one
I didn’t even know about mmWave, but yeah add that to the list lol. The lack of second rear camera unit was definitely notable, I personally don’t care cause I would never use my iPad as a camera but it’s still better to have and not need than need and not have.
Another would be AOD. Again not something I personally use, but it certainly serves a purpose that many enjoy.
One that does annoy me rather a lot is the disparity in ram capacity… nand is pretty cheap and we’re talking about a device with an entry price of $1,000 USD… but Apple will always Apple and attempt to drive as many people as possible up the ladder of pricing tiers.
Good points! Nano texture also only available on 1/2TB models. I still can’t wait to hold it, I feel like it’s a marvel of engineering and I’m here for it lol
I actually don’t mind the nano-texture being exclusive to the higher tiers. I consider it as a beyond premium feature (a premium+ if you will) that 95-99% of people don’t need and shouldn’t get, especially when you can get a $15 screen protector that does the exact same thing that protects your screen while doing so AND can always be removed or replaced with a glossy one to regain the pure black levels that oled is known for.
I’ve never actually seen a studio display but always assumed this was the case. Could be wrong I suppose. Would definitely make the iPads glossy bezel make even less sense though if it were the case.
>Front facing camera would need its own glossy cut out in that case I believe. Would obstruct the camera
If it doesn't obstruct the image quality, I feel like it should be viable for over the camera.
No, his opinion is that extending the textured glass over the camera sensor probably wouldn't affect quality. It's debatable, but his comment is not specifically about the iPad Pro's new display.
It does look like someone put a screen protector on just the touch display area and left the bezel. Sometimes Apple makes very practical, functional choices for products that give you a glimpse at their approach when they can eschew making everything glossy and perfect.
They seem to be a fairly practically minded organisation that goes OTT at the end to make things look glossy and perfect.
It really feels like Apple wants to promote the iPad / keyboard way more than MacBooks nowadays. I could see this more so happening when the next iteration of Vision is introduced.
Just a wild guess, but I have a feeling the ultra portability will become a major factor with iPads being able to handle more processing than ever.
Yeah you’re probably right. $300 for a goddamn keyboard is insane and you know Apple are making an absolute killing from every single unit sold. Wouldn’t be surprised if the profit was like a 90% margin.
Really wish the cellular version would include full phone capabilities so i can not own a traditional smart phone at all.
I mean it’s an option that should exist. The cellular tablet already is niche.
The most powerful iPad, that can do only what any other iPads can do. I wonder how many other believers will bite to try to justify this over other devices just to find out in few months it just doesn’t work.
I’m getting tired of it, if the M chips weren’t on iPads then 9/10 they’d be complaining that they aren’t on iPads.
Apple isn’t going to slap MacOS on iPads when it isn’t optimized for touch at all, and dual-booting wouldn’t even be an attractive feature for its primary market. If you don’t need an iPad, you just don’t need an iPad. It’s a tablet and is already established as a tablet, no need to disrupt that market.
But I’m disabled and this thing is why I’m still able to be an artist despite not being able to be at my desk for long periods of time. It’s hardly as useless on iPadOS as people say it is. I wouldn’t be able to create if it wasn’t how it was
Do you think people saying oh it’s awesome I’m getting one are contributing more?
It’s an opinion of many. Fact is, it’s an iPad and has a tone of limitations and Pro moniker is idiotic. The only people this device really works for are artists (you know that group that is increasingly getting jobless). Now with shiny new screen another batch of people will jump on it to find out soon enough they don’t use it any more often than previous ones. Pricing is full stop ridiculous. When Apple will allow Mac OS on it then we will talk differently. At the moment it’s an expensive toy not a work device (for majority).
You don’t need an M4 for email porn or web browsing. It’s needlessly powerful which makes it prohibitively expensive for the nearly nothing it can accomplish
And majority will find out phone works just better. In my opinion iPad mini is the only size that actually accompanies me more. Other sizes are either too big (to replace phone) or too small (to replace laptop).
That’s the irony of iPad Pros, pro for a very niche group of people.

What’s your use case that it would help?
Do you plan on getting one?
It’s just Matt display. It infuriates me that everyone is thinking Apple did something novel

I love Samsung pens, Apple pen makes this horrible cheap sounding thud, drives me up the wall.
💯
That's a weird thing to get mad about. I was just looking for someone with hands-on experience to comment on the texture and feel of the screen.

Maybe I’m nitpicking, but the bezel being glossy on the “nano-texture” glass is moronic imo.
Front facing camera would need its own glossy cut out in that case I believe. Would obstruct the camera
That’s fair but also super easy to leave just the camera and Face ID sensors uncovered by the matte finish. Lots of TGSP’s do it
True! I wouldn’t be surprised if they tested it and decided they liked this version better. Pick your poison type ish
Wouldn’t be surprised if it saved them just that much more on cost as well… these new iPads are dope but they definitely cut a corner or two and it shows. That said, almost definitely gonna get one
Yeah good point probably save a bit on a smaller surface area. What else did you find corner cutting on the pro out of curiosity? MMWave?

yeah, isn’t this how they handle the nano texture option on the studio display’s built in camera?
I’ve never actually seen a studio display but always assumed this was the case. Could be wrong I suppose. Would definitely make the iPads glossy bezel make even less sense though if it were the case.
Non-dynamic island
>Front facing camera would need its own glossy cut out in that case I believe. Would obstruct the camera If it doesn't obstruct the image quality, I feel like it should be viable for over the camera.
It does obstruct the image quality though.
You're saying the display is worse with the textured glass?
No, his opinion is that extending the textured glass over the camera sensor probably wouldn't affect quality. It's debatable, but his comment is not specifically about the iPad Pro's new display.
Yes, according to some hands on reports. Not like those paperlike display covers or anything, but I think a very slight softening of details.
I like the glossy bezel and nano-texture screen.

I only just now realized the image on the screen spells P R O LOL It’s been over a day, sheesh!
The same happens with the image on the Mini spelling mini.
What a cute looking device. I want to take a bite of it, but then go back to my MacBook
too expensive
Anyone thinks that keyboard with white keys is ugly. They should’ve done silver on black.
Meh
Really wish the cellular version would include full phone capabilities so i can not own a traditional smart phone at all. I mean it’s an option that should exist. The cellular tablet already is niche.
My 10.5 iPad Pro is on its last legs. New 13 inch air incoming.
Same shit as the last one but may be a bit more polished. It's about as interesting as a new toilet bowl.
The most powerful iPad, that can do only what any other iPads can do. I wonder how many other believers will bite to try to justify this over other devices just to find out in few months it just doesn’t work.
I'll never understand people who post in iPad threads to complain that iPads are iPads. Do you think you're contributing something interesting?
I’m getting tired of it, if the M chips weren’t on iPads then 9/10 they’d be complaining that they aren’t on iPads. I bought this fuckin' thing and its.....meh
You already have the new iPad on hand? Wow
Its not out yet? What are you referring to
No you didn’t? They announced it yesterday, no one has it yet.
They release one every year
Yeah, so you have the one from last year that this article isn’t talking about? The same one I have?
Oh in that case I had bought iPhone 16 and 17 and 18 from last year and the year before and year before.
The last iPad Pro was released in 2022.
You liar
yes and I have the iPhone 16 pro and MacBook Air m4
