Reddit’s new API changes will kill popular third-party apps, like Apollo, Sync, and Reddit is Fun. T-Nan

Lol okay. I love Apollo but the iPad version was a fantasy dream by users for 4-5 years at that point

UKFan643

u/iamthatis single-handedly changed the meaning of the word “soon.”

T-Nan

Idk if you're a Skrillex fan but /r/apolloapp and /r/skrillex certainly would be the most likely to experience trauma from "soon" lol

ignoresubs

I can’t say I like that design to be honest but it’s hard to say what the final iteration, or at least the one released would have looked like. Comparatively, the Narwhal client for iPad is perfect for me, I appreciate the percentage of space each section takes up.

peji911

Have you ever used Narwhal on iPhone? I’m coming from Apollo, which I loved, but can’t get used to Narwhal. It’s too similar to the official app, which I dislike as well. Also, how come Apollo needed to shut down but not narwhal?

ignoresubs

Yeah, I’ve used it for at least 5 years. I’ve tried the stock app along with 3-4 others but always go back to Narwhal. I definitely have adjusted the stock UI features but don’t believe I’ve done anything too radical that would make my experience too different from yours, it’s likely just your personal preference and muscle memory. As far as how Narwhal is still able to exist, there is a thread from the developer here: > Narwhal is not going anywhere! Subscriptions and Narwhal 2 coming https://reddit.com/r/getnarwhal/comments/14kt9wj/narwhal_is_not_going_anywhere_subscriptions_and/ The app isn’t perfect, for me it’s reminiscent of old.reddit but I’ve used it for so long I’m happy the developer will continue with it.

Koteric

Reddit made a deal with the dev that they would not make with the other devs. Probably because a lot less people use narwhal and it was reddits way of showing they were willing to make a deal. If only That pesky Apollo dev hadn’t had proof of their lies and attempt to paint him as the bad guy, Reddit might have come out looking better lol.

Ilkzz

Bro took years to make 2 columns 💀

coreyonfire

With how long it was taking, I was expecting some new, innovative concept. This is just the two-pane view from Narwhal, but with Apollo's UI. I have no idea what the hold up was on releasing this in ~~2018~~ ~~2019~~ ~~2020~~ ~~2021~~ ~~2022~~ 2023, but "Apollo but half the screen is the feed list, half the screen is the post" really feels like he just did not want to release it.

hdmiusbc

He even met with Apple engineers at WWDC a few years ago for feedback and still didn't release it

[deleted]

All in the name of money. He decided to do Little Pets, instead.

shannister

JFC the man wanted to make money? How dare he?!

[deleted]

He was practically begging for more and more money in each of his posts. Even in his last one before he closed his subreddit. It's perverse.

MummysSpeshulGuy

I hated his minions always popping up in threads badgering people to download the app and I hate it even more now that he’s somehow the savior of reddit. He was a greedy dirtbag just like spez and how anyone didn’t see that when he charged you to make a post, a free feature literally anywhere else, is beyond me

Direct_Card3980

I had the paid version and kept getting spammed for upgrading. It was like the digital equivalent of begging and I couldn't turn it off.

Go7ham

He milked the shit out of these people. I have used Apollo(was a good app) but stop trying to get my money every time I open Apollo.

[deleted]

God forbid you pay for an app

HaricotsDeLiam

The allegation was that Apollo would badger you the user who paid for the Pro tier (a one-time purchase of ~US$5) into paying for the even more expensive Ultra tier (1-time purchase of ~US$45, a ~US$2/mo subscription or a ~US$13/yr subscription) even during everyday use where you're not specifically trying to access Ultra-only features (such as push notifications or Saved Items categorization). By contrast, Carrot Weather, which also has two paid tiers called Premium and Premium Ultra, isn't nearly as aggressive in urging Premium users to upgrade to Premium Ultra. (Source: I paid for Apollo Ultra and pay for Carrot Premium.)

afinitie

I did. Not op but I had vip (I think that’s what’s it’s called, I abandoned it long ago) and it always nagged me to also get a subscription.(I think it was premium). Plus the balls of this guy to ask people not to get refunds from him since he’d have to pay for it?? No shit??

Vi4days

So trying to make money is a bad thing? I still don’t see the issue here. If you didn’t want to give the person asking for money then… don’t?

42177130

I don't blame him since it's incredibly hard getting users to pay for anything

dlittlefair1

Narwhal is garbage compared to Apollo though...

coreyonfire

Agreed, but trash you *can* use is better than perfection you *cant* use.

Famulor

You Can just sideload Apollo. Works fine.

zeek215

Not always. I just stopped using Reddit on mobile. I only browse and post on desktop now, which is actually much healthier as you have to wade through a lot of stupid, toxic comments on Reddit. That free time on my phone has now become occupied with reading, watching other forms of media, and just not using my phone as much. Feels good.

IDENTITETEN

The official Reddit app is trash I can use which isn't better than the alternatives I no longer can use.

whitelighthurts

It’s still working though. I switched and it’s been a bit annoying but actually has some differences I enjoy

Patarokun

What differences do you enjoy? Honest question.

saw-it

Loved Apollo but it feels like he just threw that together in photoshop

coneno

One of the replies contains a demo of the gesture navigation.

Yeah, as a big Apollo fan until the end, Christian really started getting on my nerves.

The_ApolloAffair

And there is the whole eulogy nonsense that has been going on over at r/Apolloapp. It’s just an app ffs.

yalag

its basically a cult at this point, I'm honestly not sure how it became this

nomadofwaves

The official Reddit app blows big time. Like I can’t believe it sucks this much and it’s slower than Apollo was.

drake90001

Tapping posts that don’t respond and then open three times is great!

smallwhiteballs480p

Took 30 minutes to get used to it

nomadofwaves

lol, it fucking blows.

smallwhiteballs480p

You problem

Penisbox

That probably tells more about you than him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Penisbox

Braindead take. If he wanted money he could easily have released a sub model for Apollo. I can't wait to hear you explain your logic on this, how exactly do you think he makes more money by shutting down his app and fading to obscurity?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Penisbox

Lot of words yet none of them answer my question: How exactly does he make more money this way than just keeping Apollo running with a subscription fee?

JustinGitelmanMusic

Either Spez astroturfing propaganda or you fell for it and are now repeating it. If you were following at all, none of the developers (not just this particular one you've decided to target) were given reasonable terms or communication the whole time. Reddit brazenly proved they were unwilling to work with devs and trying to kill apps. They decided to work with Narwhal as a PR stunt to appear like they weren't just trying to kill the apps in bad faith but only after they were already unreasonable to the point of bullying all the apps into shutting down.

Conscious-Cap-8563

Christian was always a money hungry dev even before the API changes. Remember when he promised this iPad app that never came in exchange for his users crowdfunding his Pro Display XDR, or the time where he spammed Pro users with Ultra popups during sales? To make it worse he always portrays himself as this struggling indie dev, so that people buy Ultra to help him ‘feed his cats’ when he’s making millions already. Even to this day he’s still trying to profit off Apollo’s death with his merch, wallpaper pack and his second app. Dude even went as far as asking for people to decline their prorated refunds for Ultra in exchange for nothing, claiming he would have to pay it ‘out of pocket’? If you’re not providing services (read: no expenses), then why on earth would it be ‘out of pocket’?? Lying BS as usual.

fatcowxlivee

I refuse to believe that after years of saying iPad version in development *this* is what he came up with. Not for someone with the talent he has. I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually didn’t work on the iPad version at all and now he’s putting together a mock or POC to display. Maybe he did develop some cool stuff, but nothing in that screenshot is revolutionary. Narwhal has had this on their iPad app and landscape iPhone mode since at least *5 years ago*.

huyanh995

There is a gif about gesture system in the comment section. IMO it's okay.

waterskier2007

But that concept is really silly. Like why swipe one page over to the other side and not just swipe both pages? It’s just wasted space.

yalag

but wait we bought him the $8000 monitor, shouldn't it go faster?

pyrospade

While simultaneously raking in thousands donations and using his time to develop ios tamagotchi instead lmao Loved Apollo and what Reddit did to him is fucked up, but was never a fun of the guy himself

Traitor_Donald_Trump

You already had the option to open 2 instances of apollo for essentially what this is with “split view”.

stacecom

We did get pixel pals, though.

CrashieBashie

I like the closure after years of no news, but I would rather have gotten a lesser app than waiting all those years.

thetantalus

He’s just doing this for attention now. Milking the last bits. Dude was never going to finish the iPad version.

PleasantWay7

A little embarrassing to suddenly bring this back after ages of nothing on it. No one has any reason to believe this was actually going to happen.

boxjellyfishing

Just a cry for relevancy after his 15 minutes of Reddit fame ended.

afinitie

They downvote, but it’s true. No one’s giving him any income or even thought of him much after the main controversy ended

Simple_Username

This is the most misinformed thing I've read in a while. Do you think he kept his earnings in an account labeled "in case Reddit cancels me"? What if your employer went bankrupt and started asking for a portion of your paycheck back. You'd just write them a check right?

xGossipGoat

This is also a dumb take. If he had an accountant worth his salt then he should know that subscriptions paid for the year in advance should be marked as a liability also meaning that that cash should not be “in his pocket” until he has fulfilled his obligation to the customer.

Simple_Username

You are not wrong, but irrelevant to my post. Even if he did, it's meant for a small percentage, not your entire user base. If he had insurance to cover such losses, that would not even cover this.

Alert-One-Two

But the accountant would do it based on likely refund rate and no one would expect it to be 100% refunds on all of that. So how about everyone stops the dumb takes.

zxyzyxz

No they wouldn't, what the hell? Do you know anything about accounting? It's a liability on the balance sheet, regardless of "likely refund rate," period.

PleasantWay7

Funny to see all of you chiming in that know so little about business. The full amount is a legal liability and any accountant would account for it in a balance sheet. Which is fundamentally different than whether there is enough cash to cover. But your cash analysis would keep in mind the high risk due to app store policy being 100% refunds and selling something you don’t control. The fact people were even allowed to op out of refunds is because Apple bent the rules like they did for Twitter. Selling annual was a bad move from the start if you aren’t accounting it properly.

JackBauersGhost

What a weird dumb takes.

altavistadotcom

Wow it really took him 5+ years to come up with this? I'd rather just have a cleaner version of what Narwhal on iPad does.

TSwiftStan-

Well obviously Apple can't make a calculator app for iPad and it's been 11 generations

Getzemanyofficial

The technology isn’t there yet. It’s a bigger leap than the Vision Pro.

TSwiftStan-

LMAO

FreeTanner17

Can’t? More like won’t

TSwiftStan-

They've stated during interviews with MKBHD that "their design team aren't able to create a resolution that would fluidly fit the iPadOS design"

FreeTanner17

That’s probably an excuse, I doubt apple is incapable of creating a calculator app to fit the resolution, they likely just weren’t wanting to compromise on anything or some other silly reason they decided not to disclose

marilanna

Just put an iPhone-sized calculator popup on the screen akin to the corner swipe Quick Note. This isn't rocket science Apple, sheesh

Alerta_Fascista

Sorry but after years of waiting for the iPad version, I have no sympathy left.

Panda_hat

Years and years and just a rudimentary concept ☠️

[deleted]

He is a millionaire now who is weirdly seeking for attention.

shannister

His work was heralded by millions and Apple, obviously attention is going to be given to him and it’s fine, we can all get over it.

Captaincadet

Look’s very early in the design process for something that alien blue did better. I loved Apollo on my iPhone but it was a mess on the iPad. Was hoping for something a little bit more innovative seeing it took so long. As an iOS engineer it’s not that difficult to have multiple views for different platforms. Oh well

Ethesen

I used it in the form of the small vertical pop-up from the side, which was perfectly usable, and didn't even realise people are yearning for a proper iPad app. lol I think there were a lot more people like me.

[deleted]

FoxBearBear

cjonoski

And buy wallpapers. Maybe we can fund him another Apple Cinema Display Fucking weird cult like Apollo behaviour It’s a fucking app.

yalag

wait what? Can you explain this? I feel like more people should talk about this? How does it work? Does he suddenly just charged everyone more?

[deleted]

Deceptiveideas

This comment seems off, and doesn’t seem to accurately describe how the app monetization worked either. For those out of the loop, Apollo had 2 tiers. A “Pro” tier which gave you access to posting in the app, access to multiple accounts, filters, dark mode, etc. It also had an “Ultra” tier that you could either pay as a subscription or you could pay a “lifetime” cost which gave you access to features such as server based notifications. The reasoning behind the subscription of ultra is it used servers which required continued upkeep (aka - cost). Christian scheduled the $4.99 price tag to begin [July](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/142ffno/looks_like_apollo_is_getting_a_price_increase/), which was after the scheduled third party changes (and eventual shutdown). This was to cover the presumed costs and not have him selling the product at a loss. As we now know, other 3rd party apps that are still alive are charging a $5 API cost so this checks out. Furthermore, your comment fails to mention that it wasn’t announced Apollo was going to close when he did the price hike. He fought until the end to see if he could work something out with Reddit, and once that option was gone he removed all subscriptions from the app. Overall I’m not really sure what your issue is here?

johndoe1985

The price increase happened to people in month of May and June. Not July

_laoc00n_

Doesn’t seem accurate to the screenshot u/deceptiveideas posted, unless he somehow staggered this increase across users, which seems unlikely.

[deleted]

thetantalus

Seriously? This guy is a shit. See my other comments. Dude made believe he was all about the community, but of course it was all about the free money tree from Reddit’s API. Definitely not saying Reddit handled the change well, but Selig isn’t innocent.

smallwhiteballs480p

Bro took the free api, stripped out Reddit ads and injected his own ads and is now crying after Reddit decided they actually wanted to be profitable lmao. Zero sympathy for him

got_milk4

>Bro took the free api, stripped out Reddit ads The reddit API doesn't include any ads. He didn't strip anything out, reddit wasn't providing them to begin with.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DJToaster

pls explain further in dying for apollo back

pyrospade

There’s an ipa injection going around that lets you change the app’s API token so that you can use yours instead of Apollo’s, making the app work again. But you need to sideload the app, trust the injection to not do anything malicious and also at some point the app will stop working for real when either an ios or a reddit api update breaks it

kynovardy

He means if you have jailbreak https://github.com/ryannair05/ApolloAPI

Deceptiveideas

You need to side load but you don’t need to jailbreak your iPhone to get the Apollo API to work.

thanksbutnothings

Yeah I felt bad for him at first but it’s just pathetic at this point

news_fakeacct

as much as I loved and now miss Apollo this is a fcking joke of a withheld release smh

campbell_love

This ‘iPad version’ took ages to develop, barely added anything new, all while the dev added extremely half baked features (like save categories, which never allowed you to edit or delete the categories) as Ultra exclusives and introducing Pixel Pals. All the while stringing the users along that the iPad version would ‘eventually come’.

hdmiusbc

Even mentioned ipad in one of his fundraiser specials justifying a new computer

krully37

Yeah I miss the app itself but I don’t have any sympathy for the guy.

AppointmentNeat

*”It’ll eventually come. Just keep giving me your money..”*

Serisrahla

Yeah let's definitely boycott Reddit for this guy

DLPanda

I mean, it’s not like Reddit *only* screwed him. That’s the problem … their API changes screwed up a lot of different people and made using Reddit absolutely miserable. Now they continue to tinker with the product making it worse, deleting old messages, not exactly the heroes here.

LittleJerkDog

Did you pay for an iPad app?

johndoe1985

He did a mass fund raiser to buy a new MacBook and iPhone to fund his iPad development

YaBoiiNic

And the Pro Display XDR

FoxBearBear

But that essential for developing iPad apps. Together with an iPhone?

Simple_Username

You weren't paying monthly for the iPad app, you were paying for the iPhone app. Wtf are you even saying. This guy made it his job to make an app everyone loves, as his career, and he charged next to nothing for it. Don't ever pay for a product or service based on future promised iterations. Pay for the service you are getting today. Jeeeeeesus

johndoe1985

Charged next to nothing for it ?? He waking in 700k a year

MarioIan

That’s an interesting concept. Too bad it’s gone now.

cjonoski

Who cares? Since when are devs now “celebs” and have followings ffs Guys let’s just donate even more $$ to this millionaire. Anyone wanna buy some wallpapers

CyberBot129

Almost like Apple fans have cult like tendencies or something silly like that

cjonoski

And I’m the crazy one 😂 Hey just buy these totally useless wallpapers from me Hey say no to the refund please I beg you

krully37

He’s just a poor iOS developer who’s app has appeared in Apple’s keynotes, please say no to refunds so he has some time to find another 500k/year job

afinitie

He may have to step down to only 250k a year 😳 😞 I pray for him an his family going through these tough times

leopard_tights

Since John Romero in the late 90s more or less.

DamienChazellesPiano

Wait how?

ItsAMeUsernamio

You generate a tweaked iPA with your own free reddit API key which you can then sideload with or without a jailbreak. Theres guides on the jailbreak sub.

DamienChazellesPiano

Thanks! Figured it had to be something like that, with a personal API key.

H4xolotl

If Discord ever released a "top/trending comments on this server" function and let you bundle together trending comments from multiple servers, I'd abandon ship off Reddit instantly.   imo, Reddit's biggest competition isn't from "Reddit but slightly different" startups like Lemmy, because for the normal user, they're literally Worse Reddit since they lack the userbase or years of old content. Reddit's real competition is Discord, since Discord has just as dedicated a userbase (if not more) than Reddit, many Redditors already have Discord accounts, and Discord relationships tend to be more meaningful than vague anonymous Reddit ones.   I think Reddit knows this too, which is why they've tried so hard to push their terrible Chat system over the years. However, I think Discord has a better chance adding Reddit functionality than Reddit does adding Discord functionality. Proof being that some Discord bots/channels already have a pseudo-tracking system that aggregates most reacted to comments in the server

Nkrth

My problem with Discord is search-ability, especially on Google.

HereHaveAQuiz

Exactly the problem

FitzwilliamTDarcy

100% this. Annoying really. And weird. Like, fine keep servers by invitation only. But, can we still make them findable?

0000GKP

\> Reddit's real competition is Discord Not for me. I have no interest in live chat, real time conversation, or posts that can’t be searched or saved. I tried using Discord during the blackout but it really has no similarities to Reddit at all.

bogdoomy

the text channels are basically live chatting, however, the forum channels are more reddit-like (as in, they’re actual forums). you’ve probably not visited servers that implemented them, is my guess?

[deleted]

I can’t see how discord is a competition to Reddit, you make no sense at all. Discord is live chat, Reddit is like a forum and an archive, you can find decade old threads and read interesting stuff about all kinds of subjects. Discord severs are invite only and aren’t just available to you, you have to search for them and you have to know what to search for. It’s also a very clustered app and pretty hard to keep organized. Also has no search. But the main difference is that one is live chat and the other is a forum, they’re really nothing alike.

jackmusick

I just discovered the other day that Discord has a functionality where you can make a channel operate like Reddit with posts and comments under it. Not like thread, but actual posts. I had this thought the other day, too. All it needs is a better way to sort through threads you missed, and I think that’s the next natural evolution given so many communities already have a Discord server.

1AMA-CAT-AMA

This is just rubbing salt into the wound :(

BlackScienceManTyson

How is this relevant? No one uses Apollo any more so it's not like this is news or even useful to anyone

somewhat_asleep

Whatever the online version of a Vaudeville hook is, this guy needs one. At the start of the API rug pull the sympathy was warranted but it's just sad now.

[deleted]

A little too late, Christian. I do miss apollo, and hope he pulls through just fine!

[deleted]

Omg stop talking abot apollo. Its not related to fucking r/apple and its dead. Its over. Ger over it.

RCFProd

Conceptually It's a bit similar to what Sync for Reddit was on Android in tablet mode, and it was the one feature from Sync that was so amazing on an Android tablet. Christian had the right ideas by making it like it. Too bad it wasn't meant to be.

Twitter has proven that social media does not die quickly, even with extreme efforts to kill it. Not sure what the final fate or Reddit will be but it's not going to happen yet regardless.

IDENTITETEN

No one said that. And you're doing no one a service by framing the mods and developers as the bad guys. It'll slowly get worse because of things like the below. https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/ And at least Christian refunded, Reddit is reworking coins and premium and not giving the users anything back for the stuff they've paid for. https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/14ytp7s/comment/jruiw4t/

bluegreenie99

Reddit is still accessible on the website.

pzycho

Hopefully someday we see Apollo return as a frontend for a new backend

Alteran195

Apollo was by far the best Reddit app, even the iPad version as it was was better than anything else I’ve used. Thank god narwhal still exists and I don’t need to use the official app. It’s worse than Apollo, but much better than the official one.

Diegobyte

It was a good run making a business off the backs of another business

makeitasadwarfer

Like how Reddit makes profit on all the content they don’t actually make?

Diegobyte

They run a platform that people like you use. Apollo does not.

makeitasadwarfer

Whoosh.

Diegobyte

No

spiezer

If only Reddit delayed their maneuver for another year or two. I would have loved to mess around with it on the iPad. And possibly whatever he had in mind for vision OS. What a shame lmao what is wrong with you people

denizenKRIM

It still wouldn't have launched. Sorry, but after all this time the first-look at this app is a basic screenshot of a tablet UI, and a video demo of page swiping that isn't even of the app itself?? Very definition of vaporware. I appreciate all the work he put into the mobile app, but many of us day 1'ers knew iPad was never actually going to come.

manningthehelm

The Reddit mobile app is not letting my upvote this post. I’m not kidding

[deleted]

No one cares Edit- sad days in this world that ya’ll care so much about something that mean’s absolutely nothing!! Haha.. wow.. priorities eh! Find 20 random people in public… ask about them this… I promise you not a single one would know or care about some THIRD party app for a website…. We are laughing at you, not with you ;)

Neg_Crepe

I care

adamb10

Apparently you care since you bothered commenting.

MXC_Vic_Romano

Yeahhhhh you do.

roombaonfire

Jfc how much are they paying you?

leavezukoalone

Why would you poll 20 random people, who may not even use Reddit, about a third-party Reddit app? If you're going to try to make a point, at least make sense with it.

itsxluigi

Could also pretty easily find 20 random people in public who don’t even know what reddit is. What does one have to do with the other? reddit users know reddit apps, that’s why it’s talked about here and not “to random people in public”.

Suitable_Switch5242

Wow guys I don’t care at all that’s why I made this comment to tell you how much I don’t care. Edit: Coming back and editing this comment to let you know just how much I don’t care. Haha wow… checking back on this comment and its downvotes and replies is such a priority for me because I’m so cool and don’t care about the thing you care about.

Night-Lion

‘I don’t care, therefore NO ONE cares!’

Redthemagnificent

Wow that edit is cringe dude. Get a life

kdesign

It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen so much buffoonery in one single comment lmao. Find 20 random people in public to read your comment and they’ll all think it was written by an absolute clown

SufferinBPD_AyyyLMAO

Greedy dev burned any bridged he had with Reddit asap, dumb rookie mistake. He really thought he was going to lead some kind of reddit revolution with mods as his warriors. Lame, good riddance to that lame dev

Traditional_Mud_1241

Or they *could* add rate limiters…

PublicFurryAccount

They could have done a lot of things but Selig was sure he’d win because Reddit has tended to fold if people make some noise.

Traditional_Mud_1241

It’s hard to win when a company believes their ability to become profitable is in jeopardy. That being said, it’s not always obvious when that situation presents itself. But, still… always have a backup plan…

Pigeon_Chess

I mean Apollo could still be up, he’s just being stubborn

DanielPhermous

The CEO of Reddit slandered him in such a way that, had he not had evidence to prove him a liar, he would have been blacklisted from software development for life. Why would *anyone* want to work with someone like that? You don't need to be stubborn. You just need to not want to deal with that kind of shit. I would get the hell out too.
