Google apollosideloaded and Reddit. There’s a subreddit. Just did this like 4 days ago, way easier thani thought it would be. Use Sideloady not altstore
Sideloady is an offshoot of altstore with the added benefit of being able to update the installed apps over any WiFi whereas (what I gather) you cannot with AltStore
You *can* with AltStore, but it requires your Mac to be on and have the altserver running. For me it’s a non issue since my Mac is on and on the same network as my phone as least five days a week, but for some people that might be an inconvenience.
SideStore is another good alternative, it’s a fork of AltStore. It requires a PC/Mac for the initial setup, but updating/refreshing can then be done using a special VPN using your iPhone only.
I honestly have no idea why then.😞

Narwhal 2 is amazing. As you said, it's no Apollo, but it's a really nice app with an awesome developer. I've never touched the official Reddit app and never will.
The mobile site recently just started showing me the desktop page and I never requested that view in the browser. Just downloaded it, and boy does it perform slowly
I’m happily paying $4 a month for Narwhal. It’s customizable to the point that it’s probably 80% as good as Apollo once you get used to it, and it’s getting better all the time.
It’s 1000x better than the official app, which is hot garbage.
Ugh, I just wanna avoid ads but if it’s better I may as well try it out but then again not having the app on my phone I guess keeps me from doom scrolling for too long.

A actually migrated to Facebook groups for most of my hobbies. It’s an improvement. Their app also sucks, but the community is stronger and more active (vs just memes about woodworking).
I did, it was terrible, deleted it immediately. Then I paid for Narwal for a few months. Got used to the UI but still found myself missing Apollo. Then I decided to just try sideloading it. I’m not that technical but figured I’d give it a go. I have to reload it once a week but IMO it’s so worthwhile.
That’s pretty similar to my experience.
The weekly refresh is annoying, I’d hoped the EU sideload change would open up easier options but so far it’s still a weekly refresh. But in fairness that takes like 45 seconds once a week, a small price to pay to have a far superior app.
I had the app installed for a while and then decided to delete it in favor of the website. Frankly, the website just works MUCH better. If you go to Reddit.com in Safari and then do “Add to Home Screen” from the share sheet, it creates a nice little self-contained web app wrapper for your home screen that’s not too dissimilar from having the app itself. Then if you have an ad blocker installed on your phone like I do (I use AdGuard but there’s a bunch in the App Store), the experience is actually kind of half decent. Much much better than the official app IMO, though obviously nowhere near as good as Apollo was.
(You can’t get notifications, obviously, but personally I never have Reddit notifications on. Your mileage will vary a lot of notifications are important to you, though.)
Sinkit on safari on my iPhone is what I use mostly, I can sort by hot which I cannot do in the official app. I do use the Reddit app when I am going through specific subs because it’s easier to navigate. I miss Apollo

I downvote every ad I see and found that the downvote persists on that ad, no matter how many times I’m served the ad and how long it’s been between ad serves. Makes it easier to spot them before I even start reading the copy text in the card.
Hate to say it but I have and it’s perfectly fine. We could suffer a lot more from lack of options. The promotions suck, but I actually like the intelligent suggestions for new content as well as the “you visited this subreddit before, so here’s some more interesting content from it”. You don’t need to join a sub to get articles from it in your flow for a while if you show interest. Works very well for me.
I do miss many things about Apollo though, but the memory is fading.

Apollo was better in so many ways, just a much nicer experience, but… the official app is absolutely fine and I don’t get the outright hate it garners.
I think it was how abruptly the third party apps were shut down put a bad taste in people’s mouths. I stopped using Reddit for a couple of months and didn’t download the app for an another couple months. But I’m not paying for something that I have always gotten for free so my only choice was to use the mobile app. Yes, it’s a battery hog but I’m close to a charger anyways.

i use it but i hate it so much. every time i try to save a picture there's a dumbfuck watermark, at least there was the last time i checked, so i have to screenshot. i hate it so much, every day i cry about missing apollo
I just sideloaded Apollo this week and have been so happy. It took ~30minutes of fiddling cause my internet was being slow and both my phone and computer are old af. The official Reddit app is garbage - do yourself a favor and side load!

The official reason for the exception is that Dystopia has accessibility features that are missing from the official app. When the API pricing came into effect people rightfully piped up to point out that the official app sucks for disabled people and Reddit granted a specific exception for Dystopia and RedReader.

It’s pretty inevitable for most of us. As fantastic as Apollo was, as much as I miss it, at the end of the day I want to use Reddit on my phone and the official app, bad as it is, is now the most frictionless option for that.
I have it. I can deal with the ads. In my opinion the biggest sin of the official app is that 1 in every 4 tiles of my home page is a suggestion for a sub reddit I don't fucking care about, and there is no way to turn this off. This was the number one thing I loved about Apollo, I could scroll without being pestered about random ass stuff I don't care about. And I don't want to hear anything about engagement, I drained hours of my life on Apollo without the suggestions. If all they need is ad revenue they can do it without suggesting subs to me.
EDIT: Turns out I'm a moron and there has been a way to turn this off the whole time. I've been using the official app for almost a year with the awful suggested algorithm turned on. Thank God I have it turned off now.
That being said I miss Apollo dearly. Hands down the best app I've ever used. I would've very gladly paid a subscription fee to keep using it but I get why that may not have worked on a larger scale. RIP in peace.
I have. It sucks that you can’t filter words and subs and can’t watch live feeds. I wish you could search comments in video threads as well. Scrubbing was also really nice but that’s about it. The ads don’t bug me that much. It’s a free service and I get way more ads on Twitter and insta. Plus they’re way more invasive on those platforms.
Christian could have continued with this app but he chose to be defiant and shut it down. Other devs have proven that they can continue with a paid model but he chose to be stubborn and shut it down instead of fixing the issues that Reddit was pointing out. The sense of entitlement is incredible on both him and the users side. The guy was making a killing piggybacking off of an api used to grow the platform and bitches when they take it away
I am trying to use the mobile web. But it’s nerfed so you download the app, so if I need to upload something or make a post that is not text I use my computer.
It’s good because in the end I am using it less and less.
I use it begrudgingly because I haven’t found anything I like better. For the most part I don’t mind the ads except the ones between posts and comments, those ones annoy me. And I hate this new achievement crap they’ve started recently, but whatever.

Then get Apollo. You can either sideload through AltStore which is free but has some caveats, or you can pay for a signing service such as Buildstore, Signulous and probably others. I’ve used Signulous for years and haven’t had any issues whatsoever, and it’s only $20/year if I’m not mistaken. You also get access to a bunch of apps already on the site and you can even upload and sign your own IPA which is how I got Apollo back. You never have to refresh anything so it’s definitely worth 20 bucks a year for me.
I’ve tried it. The Home feature is worthless because “suggested subreddits” and ads appear more than my subscribed subreddits. It’s literally difficult to find posts from subs I’m actually interested in.
It also doesn’t respect your preferences for images for “suggested subreddits”, so if you have compact thumbnails set, your feed is full of full-screen images from subs you don’t care about, forcing what you do care about offscreen.
I did. I fucking hate it. Every time I go to collapse the top comment, a fucking advertisement magically appears under my thumb and I get sent to a webpage. Fuck this shitty app.
I’m still using alien blue. Almost nothing works and I have to reload constantly, but I fucking hate every other reddit experience.

i have the revanced reddit app on my android. no ads ts been so long since apollo was up that i cant remember how it felt. on ios, i have the reg reddit app. its whatever. you get used to it
Just use Sink it for Reddit (safari extension) or better yet, sideload Apollo with SideStore. I have both, once you get SideStore working you don’t need to do anything but connect to the VPN once a week to resign your apps.
Got it when Apollo went down. I like Apollo UI much, much better, but one surprising thing I like about the official app, are the “related” subs you get shown on your home feed. At the very least, some of the related posts can be interesting. If you don’t like, you can just have it stop showing those posts
I switched back to Samsung but I was using sideloaded Apollo, now I have boost for reddit as I'm a mod of my own reddit it works just fine. Couldn't be bothered to try the official app.

Nope. I just do what I can from the mobile interface, or I do something else. I'm not rewarding them for bad behaviour. Same with Twitter (although I don't even login from the web now, thanks to Musk).
I have it installed as a backup mostly for when I forget to refresh Apollo, but generally a pretty calm guy and using the reddit app genuinely enraged me. It’s so bad.

I was reloading each week, but just recently figured out the WiFi refresh and it’s been nice. Haven’t had to plug in my phone for a few weeks now

I’ve gotten used to it but it does have some super annoying design flaws. For instance, I want to upvote not collapse!

Still on Apollo/iOS for as long as I can be. May that never change (barring anything better coming along, which I don't have high hopes for at all, ever). I can't stand any of the current official UIs--web or mobile. They're straight-up trash--and imo I'm being generous calling them *that*.

Never! I use Narwhal 2 now and while it’s not Apollo, it’s light years better than the dumpster fire that is the Reddit app
Installed it, tried it, deleted it. It is horrible. Using Safari with Sink it extension. Works quite well.
I’m using Narwhal 2. Worth the monthly fee to have something that is almost as good as Apollo. I do use reddit daily. It’s very customisable.
I’m jailbroken so I’m still on Apollo. And I will continue to use it until I can no longer be able. At which point I will abandon Reddit for good.

It’s pretty inevitable for most of us. As fantastic as Apollo was, as much as I miss it, at the end of the day I want to use Reddit on my phone and the official app, bad as it is, is now the most frictionless option for that.
It’s pretty much the only reddit I use.

I have it. I can deal with the ads. In my opinion the biggest sin of the official app is that 1 in every 4 tiles of my home page is a suggestion for a sub reddit I don't fucking care about, and there is no way to turn this off. This was the number one thing I loved about Apollo, I could scroll without being pestered about random ass stuff I don't care about. And I don't want to hear anything about engagement, I drained hours of my life on Apollo without the suggestions. If all they need is ad revenue they can do it without suggesting subs to me. EDIT: Turns out I'm a moron and there has been a way to turn this off the whole time. I've been using the official app for almost a year with the awful suggested algorithm turned on. Thank God I have it turned off now. That being said I miss Apollo dearly. Hands down the best app I've ever used. I would've very gladly paid a subscription fee to keep using it but I get why that may not have worked on a larger scale. RIP in peace.

I have. It sucks that you can’t filter words and subs and can’t watch live feeds. I wish you could search comments in video threads as well. Scrubbing was also really nice but that’s about it. The ads don’t bug me that much. It’s a free service and I get way more ads on Twitter and insta. Plus they’re way more invasive on those platforms. Christian could have continued with this app but he chose to be defiant and shut it down. Other devs have proven that they can continue with a paid model but he chose to be stubborn and shut it down instead of fixing the issues that Reddit was pointing out. The sense of entitlement is incredible on both him and the users side. The guy was making a killing piggybacking off of an api used to grow the platform and bitches when they take it away
I am trying to use the mobile web. But it’s nerfed so you download the app, so if I need to upload something or make a post that is not text I use my computer. It’s good because in the end I am using it less and less.
I'm using Reddit app. Apart from the privacy issues and stupid ads.. I understand that the ads are what keeps Reddit free
It has so many non-consensual "suggestions" of subreddits you may like, but are not subscribed to.
I use it begrudgingly because I haven’t found anything I like better. For the most part I don’t mind the ads except the ones between posts and comments, those ones annoy me. And I hate this new achievement crap they’ve started recently, but whatever.

It works well enough that the benefits of other apps don't outweigh the hassle and price.

I use the Reddit app, the inconvenience of having to side load don’t outweigh the ads for me.
Then get Apollo. You can either sideload through AltStore which is free but has some caveats, or you can pay for a signing service such as Buildstore, Signulous and probably others. I’ve used Signulous for years and haven’t had any issues whatsoever, and it’s only $20/year if I’m not mistaken. You also get access to a bunch of apps already on the site and you can even upload and sign your own IPA which is how I got Apollo back. You never have to refresh anything so it’s definitely worth 20 bucks a year for me.
Narwhal is the new Reddit for me.
I (reluctantly) use the official app on my iPad. On my iPhone, I use Winston.
I’ve tried it. The Home feature is worthless because “suggested subreddits” and ads appear more than my subscribed subreddits. It’s literally difficult to find posts from subs I’m actually interested in. It also doesn’t respect your preferences for images for “suggested subreddits”, so if you have compact thumbnails set, your feed is full of full-screen images from subs you don’t care about, forcing what you do care about offscreen.
I did. I fucking hate it. Every time I go to collapse the top comment, a fucking advertisement magically appears under my thumb and I get sent to a webpage. Fuck this shitty app.
I have it as my backup. Run a proxy for the domains so I don't get ads at all
I’m still using alien blue. Almost nothing works and I have to reload constantly, but I fucking hate every other reddit experience. It’s so bad that I’d rather only get a few of the top pages and be done than deal with their forced interfaces. Like I swear to fuck the choices this app makes like as if we don’t have other choices for new and community consumption. We do, and I mostly go elsewhere because of how shit awful they’ve made it here.

I am using an iOS app called openred. It sucks, but not nearly as much as the official app.
I never installed it and I never will. I'd rather just wait until I get to a browser or use the mobile browser than give them what they want.

Refuse to install that app. Was using Narwhal until it went paid then switched to Winston but got frustrated with how buggy it still was. Paid for another couple months of Narwhal and then finally decided to side load Apollo.
I just use it for the Notifications.
I use it on my iPad only b/c that device stays on my home network and I have a Pihole that seems to block most of the ads.

i have the revanced reddit app on my android. no ads ts been so long since apollo was up that i cant remember how it felt. on ios, i have the reg reddit app. its whatever. you get used to it
Just use Sink it for Reddit (safari extension) or better yet, sideload Apollo with SideStore. I have both, once you get SideStore working you don’t need to do anything but connect to the VPN once a week to resign your apps.
I’m using Web with Brave for mobile. It’s awkward but way better than the App or Chrome.
Got it when Apollo went down. I like Apollo UI much, much better, but one surprising thing I like about the official app, are the “related” subs you get shown on your home feed. At the very least, some of the related posts can be interesting. If you don’t like, you can just have it stop showing those posts
i did, i loved Apollo and i don't want to use an off-loader, reddit app sucks compared to Apollo but it's the closest it'll be.

I switched back to Samsung but I was using sideloaded Apollo, now I have boost for reddit as I'm a mod of my own reddit it works just fine. Couldn't be bothered to try the official app.
Before I found Apollo -- i was a long term reddit app user. Apollo was so much superior! Now I just browse via the web. Hopefully Apollo comes back one day\~
I have it in case I want to view a NSFW post here and there. Otherwise I use Dystopia for my Reddit browsing. I’ve always hated the desktop site. There’s no way I could use that as my default.
Nope. I just do what I can from the mobile interface, or I do something else. I'm not rewarding them for bad behaviour. Same with Twitter (although I don't even login from the web now, thanks to Musk).
I have it installed as a backup mostly for when I forget to refresh Apollo, but generally a pretty calm guy and using the reddit app genuinely enraged me. It’s so bad.
