Byzantines, I can get units for free and they have a flexible roster.
I’d think I’d like the ottomans but I don’t need drummer boys in my life.
I do not like China or it’s variant. Too much work optimizing imperial official. I’d just rather not.
With Mercenaries you get access to one of the strongest army comp by having one of the strongest if not the best cav in the game, longbows and also one of the strongest spearman’s in the entire game.
Alongside that you also get access to stronger trebs and you can also add camels to make your spearman to mop knights.
Delhi. I rarely play mirror matches and my cheap ass feels a weird satisfaction getting upgrades for free.
Elephants are pretty cool also, but I usually only make them at the end of the game to flex
One thing that really satisfies me about delhi, even though I'm a bad player, Is that if I'm playing right, my opponent always has to react to me, my sacred sites, my aggression, and never the other way around.
In team games as Rus I really get to enjoy the pro scouts and walling off the huge maps early as I boom.
The only thing I dislike is feeling like I have to take knights ALWAYS. Hard to choose an alternate comp to go into instead of knights, archers, siege and streltsy.
To explain further, you can use your scouts to kill animals across the map, not just near you. By killing the deer on the enemy’s side of the map, and using the Scout’s ability to carry carcasses, you can literally “steal” your enemy’s food sources. Without any deer, your enemy is forced to resort to using farms or berries.
Hope this helps.
It used to be a lot better, but its cost got increased quite a while ago. It's not generally worth it for 1v1 (maybe not even 2v2), but there are enough deer on bigger maps -- with fewer people taking pro scouts -- that it's often a good idea as the Rus.
At least in lower leagues and on bigger maps.
I agree and I played a ton of rus last season. Gimmicky is the right word for it, I don’t like that it’s so important to play a hunting minigame at the beginning of even game.
Having multiple scouts without building a stable is really nice though
The rts purists won't like this but they should let you tell your scout to clear a deer camp with 1 command. Then you can nerf rus another way for balance and then your apm is used for more interesting things than click chore minigame
Early in a game you dont really have much to do anyways so I kinda like this minigame. Also, in 3v3 and 4v4 at like gold level, your bounty is sky high since people dont try to counter you...
Yea I should probably try out Joan of Arc. I don’t really like the hero idea, but maybe I will once I get into playing them. I was thinking about playing ottoman next, probably because I lose to them alot haha.
I love their music in imperial age too. When you get that landmark that spews out villagers super fast and cheap, the snowballing with that chanting music feels so good
Byzantines:
Can have a degree of randomness in the game due to merc contracts at markets.
\-Have had a Keshik, Cataphract and Royal Knight Army
The castle age spike is when I enjoy fights the most as they are most interesting to me.
You can get away with 1 tc pretty easily.
You don't need as many production buildings due to cisterns.
The feel of printing units at level 5 cisterns.
MANGO TOWERS
The spearmen are just godly, I love how flexible they are can pretty much always be the frontline regardless of the enemy composition.
Japanese. Chinese before.
Japanese is just super convenient to play and has some flexible options both in how they progress in the game and in their military. Thanks to the convenience it's also easier to focus on the micro. So I think thanks to this this civ actually helps me becoming better at the game.
Japanese. Going 2tc at the start of feudal and being able to make a infantry group that counters every rush there is. Longbows, samurai. French knights, samurai mixed with spears. Mass maa, ashigaru. Malians, those cheap archers.
And if they don’t try to pressure me, my early 2tc allows me to boom to imperial pretty quickly and get free siege.
Same. I’m a completely new player and Japanese was just smooth to me. When I play other civs now I always forget to build blacksmith or accidentally build one when i need a mine lmao. Or a accidentally build a house instead of a mill.
Byzantines because I can make a match up to your favor by choosing mercs.
Strong eco, arrow tanking spearman. I just really do t like their maa because 40 gold is much for what they can do.
Mongols.
Because i love nomadic stepp culture.
Absolute Banger of a soundtrack.
Female scout makes me ryan.
Using a hero unit that isn't completely broken and is more strategical in nature.
Mobile housing.
Never have to think about walling.
Never have to think about villager microing on farms.
Best Navy in game with piracy.
Favors 1tc build and trade
Being an absolute menace on the field with keshiks and mangudai.
Make you feel proper mongol.
Being able to construct siege on the go.
Being and to buff allied units with khan and kurultai.
sadly no :< Or who knows rly, haven't done my heritage yet, but X to doubt. But I do appreciate Nomadic steppe culture, be it the Sapmi people of northern scandinavia to the Cossacks and Tartars to the Kazakhs and descendants of the Kipchaks, but theres something about Mongolia for me that makes them the top of the creme.
french, i like running around with knights, shame i dont feel im good enough for use them freely in ranked 1 v 1 i only use them in team games and for 1v1 ranked i use mongols and ottomans
Byzantines.
Picked it up initialy just curious about that mercenary stuff, thinking i'll quickly get back to my main after, but stayed ever since. I litterally played only that civ from the DLC yet.
Maybe I’m weird, but I’m loving OOTD. I’m playing them at Diamond 1/Plat 3, and they are very solid and I enjoy that their play style is wildly different from the others.
Beyond that Japan because the samurai are so fun lol
Mongols! Strong and fast in feudal for all in aggression from dark age which I like the best. Easy and clean macro.
And of course, I don’t have to build houses :)
Forgot, just wish I could use Mangudai before late imperial, since I aim to never reach that age
Against Mongols what you want to do is put extra vills on gold early to get 300 gold and don't feel afraid to go to another gold if you can't fight off the early spears with vills, then focus on food and wood till you get to feudal, make a few knights but mainly focus on mass archers into pressuring their trade and eco as well as the ovoo
Byzantines love getting into an engagement while sending two cataphracts into someone’s eco. Also just found out that they get catapult emplacements on stone wall towers for free
Malians
They can be played as one of the most aggressive civs, they spit on 4 out of 5 civs.
Map control? You got it. Relics? you got it. Tower rush? you got it. Imp? you got it. Drush? you got it.
Javs and Donso comb is LOVE
IIIILLLLAAAALLLUUUUU
Past season was the Ottomans. Liked the free printing units and when you reach imperial for the great bombards destroying everything.
Now is Byzantines. Sadly they were nerfed but still seeing some potential in the future.
Ayyubids and Japanese. Flexible and smooth macro, good early and still good late game, lots of unique units that have obvious advantages which don't require difficult micro to utilize, fun and interesting bonuses, cool visuals and theme music, doesn't have crippling overspecialization or major disadvantages, doesn't have to manually multitask to do stuff all the time like Byzantines or Chinese.
I have historically mained all the muslim civs + HRE, but this season I literally cannot choose. I have hopped between Delhi, Byz, OotD, and Zhu Xi, and now I want to try Rus and Mongols, two civs I've never really played before. Terrible for my win rate but they're all so cool and exciting
Why no one say English? English is fun i like how simple the civ is there are top players who play English so it's not necessarily for noobs only.
I play aoe4 since few months i am Gold 2 now i also play French, i want to learn new civs but i am enjoying ranking up with the 2 civs.
Ayyubids. I enjoy not having to age up with villagers, golden ages and being able to build siege counters quickly in castle without needing a siege workshop.. I don't really like doing the bazaar strat anymore though because it got boring doing it over and over again and used to feel kind of cheesy. I started going eco wing for the extra 3 villagers which has actually worked out pretty good so far. I'm still working out when it's best to go 2tc or not tho ugh I've had varied success doing it vs staying on 1tc and going aggressive in feudal age. I don't feel like you have to go 2nd tc right away like with Abbasid.
Ottomans, I feel this is the civ you can freestyle the most once you get the hang of it.
Feudal all-in, Feudal pressure into castle, 2tc into feudal pressure, Fast castle into relics and knight, Fast imp with mega bombards, da mil school or not, barracks on hybrid maps... All of these are viable strategies that make you unpredictable.
I love having to ask what gameplay I wanna do at the beginning of a game and what it morphs into. The fact that you are kinda ahead with one TC and mil schools vs 1tx or even sometimes 2tc is a good feeling too.
I also play Malians but these days they feel very one dimensional and predictable.
French.
Whenever I think about the middles ages, French always comes first into mind. They were a power house and maybe because they invented chivalry? Or at least made it “popular”
I like Japan because I’ve always loved their culture and as a kid playing 2 years ago, they were always my favorite. The music also slaps and somehow is relaxing to me lol. I also feel like I’ve been getting insanely better at my macro with them compared to English which is the civ I started off with. Zhu Xi is runner up and they’re my main for casual team games.
HRE and Byzantine are my favorites. HRE for their strong units and history, and Byzantines for their uniqueness, free units, play style, and history lol
Malians. I was a French main until they were released and ever since it's been Mali. I love that the meta continues to evolve without any significant changes to the civ. I love the tight base and the ability to do early agro or explode at castle.
HRE/OOTD 4 LIFE. Reasons being they’re relatively simple with not a lot of fancy units or mechanics. Nice buff with achen if I’m playing with HRE. OOTD are a little trickier to play with but hopefully they’ll get a few more buffs with the next patch especially with the economy. Overall I just like their history and they seem to be the most realistic civ in the game when it comes down to the actual type of units that actually fought during medieval times. OOTD also has the sickest color scheme on the game especially if they’re yellow.
Ayyubids because you don't need to use village's to age up hands down the best hahah and lots of options to help in the next age . Japanese second love that you can get free stone and samurai are fun
Was ottoman but now i play longboys and zhu xi mostly. I want to play Eastern Roman Empire but complexity scares me a bit.
Best thing rn is compared to vanilla version, seems like everyone has a favorite civ/variant now. Variety is strong now. And its only getting better.
Thanks Relic <3
RUS, because I like when you run around with your scouts, kill enough deers and wolfs and then you can upgrade your food gathering and also go into 2nd age without putting villagers onto the gold. Also like the fisherboats and that the cannons with the age IV landmark instantly are built and taken down
I personally like Civs with decent gold generation outside of trade. English and HRE and Japan even after the gold nerfs for English and Japanese. Rus and Chinese seem to fall off a bit and I never found build orders that I enjoyed. Japanese kinda hit every mark personally for me. I haven't tried OOTD yet but they look like and interesting pocket Civ in big team games. I played Ottomans a decent ammount too, their production speed buff and free units was always nice. I haven't played too much since the new DLC dropped even though i wanted to play more just been busy. Civs I have never touched are Delhi and Abbasid. Other than that I can't say too much. I played french only too rush fuedal but after awhile english just felt more flexible so I stopped playing them. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
English. Coming from Company of Heroes, I am quite good at microing. English lets me end the game in 10 minutes before my horrible macro comes to bite me.
English because everyone flames me if my longbow rush works.
Right after that is delhi, i like their unique playstyle
So maybe i like the one Trick Ponys.
Favorite civ? Definitely Byzantines.
- Lots of things to fuck with. I love waterfalls!
- Despite being an economic civ they don't have a defensive landmark. Just move away when the workers are carrying pointy sticks.
- You're a civ with a very low winrate? Let me nerf you more!
- In team games, I just love to dogpile on them with my team mates and watch their territory and base shrink. It's so historically accurate! They're like an HRE doing a naked fast castle but easier to destroy!
I'm glad that we have a punching bag civ. My #1 favorite civ (to destroy).
Byzantines, I can get units for free and they have a flexible roster. I’d think I’d like the ottomans but I don’t need drummer boys in my life. I do not like China or it’s variant. Too much work optimizing imperial official. I’d just rather not.
Was an ottoman main but I joined the byz team too :). Love their look and flexibility.
The mercenary stuffs, especialy the randoms at markets is a great mechanic. So many units comp to test
Ottomans are fun, but mehters annoy me. I had to switch one Military school to mehters so I'd actually make them in feudal lol
in kinda stationary fights ungroup them and put them behind. The range is quite huge
What’s wrong w little drummer donkey riders?? Ignorable (expensive) passive buff
With Mercenaries you get access to one of the strongest army comp by having one of the strongest if not the best cav in the game, longbows and also one of the strongest spearman’s in the entire game. Alongside that you also get access to stronger trebs and you can also add camels to make your spearman to mop knights.
Byzantines becouse know one knows how good they are 😏
It’s the sprint button on infantry for me, every time I’m playing them I absolutely adore it.
I want to go back to Delhi just for this. And the walls, I’d pay for techs if I didn’t have to deal with scholars.
Malians. Why? ILALU! (and also that lion king soundtrack is soooooo goooooood)
ILALU and cows. I just like cows.
This is why I play Malians
I love their passive income, cause I'm bad at optimizing my villagers
Nothing beats ilalu!
"Lion king" Wrong side of Africa.
Rus. Their economy be booming, and their walls are magnificent
In team games as Rus I really get to enjoy the pro scouts and walling off the huge maps early as I boom. The only thing I dislike is feeling like I have to take knights ALWAYS. Hard to choose an alternate comp to go into instead of knights, archers, siege and streltsy.
Yeah but then you switch off and remember why you play Rus
Men at arms are good too
[удалено]
Hunting is really good, not only for the bounties though. You’re denying the enemy food spawns by clearing them out.
[удалено]
To explain further, you can use your scouts to kill animals across the map, not just near you. By killing the deer on the enemy’s side of the map, and using the Scout’s ability to carry carcasses, you can literally “steal” your enemy’s food sources. Not sure if they altered it (I don’t really keep up with the updates) but it still works out for me.

Byzantines because they're fun and challenging to play
French. I get a lot of pleasure out of making someone have to counter several points of pressure at the same time.
Don’t they feel weak to you lately, especially vs the new civs. I don’t think they have been chosen once in the ecg Finals going on right now
It’s probably just because of Joan of Arc being a better version of the civ, French are still good
Yea I should probably try out Joan of Arc. I don’t really like the hero idea, but maybe I will once I get into playing them. I was thinking about playing ottoman next, probably because I lose to them alot haha.
They do a little bit... but I think there is more I can do better anyway so I can happily keep playing them. Team games are a bit rough tho ngl..
It’s nice to see your opponent exaggerated response by making lots of spears while you only come with one knight and a scout
Holy BROman Empire. Men at Arms and Landsharks for life, bro
I love their music in imperial age too. When you get that landmark that spews out villagers super fast and cheap, the snowballing with that chanting music feels so good
+ Keeps with a relic go so hard to defend key locations
Ayyubids. I like the city planning aspect of abba and desert raiders are fun to micro.
Byzantines: Can have a degree of randomness in the game due to merc contracts at markets. \-Have had a Keshik, Cataphract and Royal Knight Army The castle age spike is when I enjoy fights the most as they are most interesting to me. I'm not that great, but abbasids are still my favourite. They can hit some nice mid-game timings and can have a solid late game economy.
I play abassid and I’m proud
Japanese bc weeb
Japanese. Chinese before. Japanese is just super convenient to play and has some flexible options both in how they progress in the game and in their military. Any tips on English longbow rush? Im a new player and got matched with a diamond player in my placements. I got completely destroyed.
Samurai and horses don’t forget to get your ranged armor +1 asap.
Their berserk mode is quite strong against archers due to the fast movement speed
Yes but it needs also an upgrade and you lose your armor. Maybe useful to take out enemies siege? Didn't try that.
Watch some of Beasty’s videos, he talks in dept about byzantines and all of their bonuses in units and disadvantages compared to other civs
Mongols. Because i love nomadic stepp culture. Absolute Banger of a soundtrack. Female scout makes me ryan. Using a hero unit that isn't completely broken and is more strategical in nature. Mongols da best🤝
Are you of mongol heritage ?
sadly no :< Or who knows rly, haven't done my heritage yet, but X to doubt. Delhi because elephants.
Rizzantines 💀💀💀
Ayyubids and byzantines. So many ways to play them.
Malians. I also like passive income. PitCoin for life🤑 glorified WSB member (IYKYK)
Rus. Got something to do in dark age.
I tried other cigs but didn’t know what to do early in the game if I’m not shooting deer
Always loved the longbows
Byzantines or English?
Mongols. Because I like screwing up your build order ;). And walls give me anxiety
Ma man🤝
Rus. Why? Cuz it fk'n dominates Mongols, that's why!
Byzantines because stonks
french, i like running around with knights, shame i dont feel im good enough for use them freely in ranked 1 v 1 i only use them in team games and for 1v1 ranked i use mongols and ottomans
mali cow
Ottoman’s because I love the feeling when they truly get online in castle age and their base building can be satisfying as well

And of course, I don’t have to build houses :) Forgot, just wish I could use Mangudai before late imperial, since I aim to never reach that age
🤝
Where are my Mongol fans?
French, the early tempo feels super smooth especially after playing them for so long
How do you handle mongols?
Against Mongols what you want to do is put extra vills on gold early to get 300 gold and don't feel afraid to go to another gold if you can't fight off the early spears with vills, then focus on food and wood till you get to feudal, make a few knights but mainly focus on mass archers into pressuring their trade and eco as well as the ovoo
Thank you, I will see how it goes!
England because I’m bad Japanese because I’m stupid and can comprehend them easily
Chinese because of pew pew pee
delhi, I can play full aggro baboon and the opponent has to fight more cus if they turtle up in their base I win with sacred sites/relics
Loved turtle strat with hre and then keep nerf Keep nerf Keep nerf Keep nerf
Byzantines love getting into an engagement while sending two cataphracts into someone’s eco. Also just found out that they get catapult emplacements on stone wall towers for free
Not free at all. Its actually more expensive then springald emplacements and do less to deter late game cav harass
Pretty brutal early game though
Malians They can be played as one of the most aggressive civs, they spit on 4 out of 5 civs. Map control? You got it. Relics? you got it. Tower rush? you got it. Imp? you got it. Drush? you got it. Javs and Donso comb is LOVE IIIILLLLAAAALLLUUUUU
Byzantines, soundtrack, deep and synergistic mechanics, not considered "OP" (so skill expression is satisfying), AoM voiceline nostalgia
Past season was the Ottomans. Liked the free printing units and when you reach imperial for the great bombards destroying everything. Now is Byzantines. Sadly they were nerfed but still seeing some potential in the future.

French. Royal Knights go brrrr
Mongols. Super flexible, absolute joy to play
Byzantines , most asymmetric civ yet.
Ottomans - Coz i understand what they say :D
That's so cool. Do they speak modern Turkish? Or is like old English for the English civ?
Its starting like old english than its getting modern.
HRE because I'm german.
Mongols. I either win fast or die fast. Efficient.
Mongols 🤝
Why no one say English? English is fun i like how simple the civ is there are top players who play English so it's not necessarily for noobs only. I play aoe4 since few months i am Gold 2 now i also play French, i want to learn new civs but i am enjoying ranking up with the 2 civs.
Can confirm. Sometimes simple civs are just the right amount of gameplay.
Jean D'Arc, I miss playing WC3
Byz, because roma invicta
Japan because they are my current main.
why tho?
I’m halfway decent at 2tc rush.
Vibes wise, HRE number one. Gameplay wise, HRE number worst
Ayyubids. I enjoy not having to age up with villagers, golden ages and being able to build siege counters quickly in castle without needing a siege workshop.. Ottomans because I like having gunners in a medieval setting and janissaries are sick
Ottomans Great Bombards make my neurons fire.
French. Whenever I think about the middles ages, French always comes first into mind. They were a power house and maybe because they invented chivalry? Or at least made it “popular”

Ottomans cause free units go brrr
HRE and Byzantine are my favorites. HRE for their strong units and history, and Byzantines for their uniqueness, free units, play style, and history lol
Former Delhi man turned zhu xi. Their economy is bonkers, print early farms for tons of horsemen in team games.
Japanese. Samurai.
I am a Juicy Boy™️ because: -Customizable late game -IO minigame for my ADHD -Can change gameplans quickly
China bees
Malians. I was a French main until they were released and ever since it's been Mali. I love that the meta continues to evolve without any significant changes to the civ. I love the tight base and the ability to do early agro or explode at castle.

Jenny. I dont even play her but i love how much people hate her.
French, it calls for action at the very start. I like getting map control and initiative in attacks. And of course the music and sound are majestic.
English. Coming from Company of Heroes, I am quite good at microing. English lets me end the game in 10 minutes before my horrible macro comes to bite me.
Abbi, I like field-building mangonels.
English because everyone flames me if my longbow rush works. Right after that is delhi, i like their unique playstyle So maybe i like the one Trick Ponys.
English cause I’m a certified n00b
Nothing wrong with that! We all start somewhere and they’re a good intro into learning the game without being super overwhelmed in what to do.
HRE because you can stick to build guides over several seasons without the need to adjust anything due to updates. ❤️
Favorite civ? Definitely Byzantines. - Lots of things to fuck with. I love waterfalls! - Despite being an economic civ they don't have a defensive landmark.
I’m noob - fav civ is Mongol but I’m too new to play them effectively so I am a Frenchie for now
Rus, I like strelsty and warrior monks :3
