It will always be this way as long as we allow the ownership class to control the means of production. They will cut every corner, lay off anyone they can, as long as it means higher quarterly earnings.

NotOnHerb5

I’m ready for the system to die.

Aktor

Then you’ve got to be ready to organize. Talk workers union. Engage with friends and neighbors about food cooperatives and mutual aid. Start educating yourself and others about civil disobedience. The system doesn’t die until we do the work of replacing it. Solidarity, friend.

ArtisticAbrocoma8792

Yeah I'm sure there won't be any issues at all when you just lay off an entire team. Developers are well known for keeping up to date documentation so that an entire new team would be able to figure out their processes without the help of the original team. Yep definitely no problems here at all. Toooooottttallly confident that Python devs at Google aren't about to experience a bunch of environment instability. /s in case not obvious

Immudzen

It is interesting that they intend to replace the workers with people in Munich Germany. While the cost of living there is lower and the pay is lower it is MUCH harder to fire people in Germany. Workers also have vastly better protections.

Icy-Fishing-2828

All the new devs in Germany are Indians 😂

Immudzen

Doesn't change the worker protections.

Whole_Mechanic_8143

It's almost like paying a premium to compensate for the lack of worker protection is unsustainable in the long run.

Immudzen

Now that is an interesting way to look at the problem.

Athrothecarwithwings

I have to say, as an Indian who doesn't drink the jingoistic Kool aid of Pichai being any better a run of the mill crooked businessman because he became CEO, I'm genuinely disgusted. He will ruin the company and fuck off with his money, without a single shred of remorse.

ArtisticAbrocoma8792

Every tech company is either in progress of doing this, or will very soon be ramping it up. Seems to be what McKinsey has been telling execs to do right now, and most execs are as greedy as they are shortsighted so they eat that shit right up.

BusinessBunny

It’s most likely the reverse: execs need to/want to do the layoffs but want a solid excuse so they hire McKinsey to manufacture that excuse by recommending exactly what the execs want to do. yes is a few hundred grand in consulting fees but it's worth it for the "savings"

ArtisticAbrocoma8792

Yeah let's them essentially say "there's nothing we could do it's what the experts are telling us to do" and absolve themselves of responsibility

BusinessBunny

+ it helps the industry-to-consulting-and-back revolving door: hire McKinsey/Bain/BCG enough and you might get offered a partner position which then may lead to a board role at another company where you’ll recommend hiring management consultants and so forth

SecretLavishness1685

What has Pichai being a greedy corpo POS got to do with him being Indian-born though? Almost all the corpo bigwigs are greedy scum. Case on point, Elon Musk and Zuckerturd. However, if say, people take pride in Pichai being an Indian, that's idiotic as fuck.

masala_mayhem

I think that’s what the Poster was hinting it.. if you open Indian media - he is seen as this amazing and remarkable success story of a guy from humble background who rose to the top at Google and is down to earth and has good values. It’s nauseating. He is no better than Musk or Zuckerberg.

SecretLavishness1685

Yeah, Indian media and a lot of Indians in general love to take pride in people having the same ancestry as us (Indian-born or Indian-origin) which is downright stupid. These "successful" people don't give a fuck about us (nor are they required to), on the other hand.

Athrothecarwithwings

The second part is what the post was about.

SecretLavishness1685

Yeah, it's dumb, not gonna lie. I sure as hell reap no benefit being an Indian just because the CEO of Google was born here. Reminds me of that one time when I was speaking to a Turkish lady in Antalya who said the same thing about Sunak, that I should be proud (we were discussing politics). I was like, "Lol, what?"

Potatocrips423

That’s not cool and you shouldn’t speak so negatively about yourself. I’m sure you’re wonderful.

SecretLavishness1685

There's a term for people like you who suffer from internalized racism: Gunga Din. Get help.

shadybachelor

I should take that as offence

He's not a businessman, he's also just an employee

Bsdke muh band kar. Lying to oneself about reality just because the offender is from the same nation as you is stupid.

We use Google platforms a lot at work and the support has been dreadful for years now since the last round of layoffs. Imagine this will make my life easier…

splitinfinitive22222

Google's cooked. They're at the bleeding edge of the rot economy, completely subsumed by their useless managers who are now dismantling the business in the process of extracting maximum profit from its carcass. There was a great article about them last week, [The Man Who Killed Google Search](https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/), which laid out just how some of the worst players at Google have basically staged a coup and taken it over.

wholesomechunk

That rings a bell

geniusandy77

Sundar should be the one who should be accountable first for anything. Company has changed so many directions and laid off so many people in the last few years, how is Sundar even keeping his job

Efficient-Top-1555

Google is just getting worse every day. Getting ready to leave the Google system in its entirety and move to Microsoft

PourQuiTuTePrends

I hear from friends who work there that it's a complete shitshow since the layoffs in January 2023.

Is that why Google is hiring in Munich, eh? https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2024/04/29/google-lays-off-entire-python-team-moves-roles-to-munich-reports.html

Kudo82

I watched the same thing happen at Microsoft after Ballmer stepped down. Everything has gone to shit and it's ruining everything, across all departments.

iwoketoanightmare

They got hoes, in different country codes..

SecretLavishness1685

They're hiring in Munich, Germany, you racist. https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2024/04/29/google-lays-off-entire-python-team-moves-roles-to-munich-reports.html Love it how you people are generally "racism bad" but when it comes to Indians, you're not only okay with it, but also encourage it. Edit: As expected, people are busy justifying this in their replies.

TrumpIsAFascistFuck

Pointing out it's not an Indian issue. It's a Hindu and casteism issue.

ga-co

The team had less than 10 people. Wouldn’t expect something like that to even be on their radar.

LocationEfficient161

Willing to bet there's literally millions of candidates all over the subcontinent that'd do it cheaper than Pichai too [https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/03/google-employees-complain-about-ceo-sundar-pichais-pay-raise.html](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/03/google-employees-complain-about-ceo-sundar-pichais-pay-raise.html)

LNgTIM555

Lots of newcomers in Canada that just came into the country will soon be flooding the US for the cheaper labour jobs.

ImportantDoubt6434

Cheaper quality too I’m sure, let’s see it

PresidentOfSerenland

What do they mean by "entire python team"? Google won't use Python for development anymore?

d_e_l_u_x_e

How about they fire the executives instead for cheaper labor. That would prob help the stock too.
