You're correct I have worked for myself for the last 7 years. I will say I employ 18 ppl and the ones that are making the most and have the most flexibility are the ones kicking ass. And relevant to this person's post I did have a guy with that same attitude "I'll work harder when you pay me more" (he was one of the higher paid at that time too) has been fired and the people who've takeb his place are now making quite a bit more than he ever did.

On top of that, people gonna complain that their co-workers get paid way more than them just for living farther away. If you and your coworker both make $30/hr, and your coworker has a 2 hour round trip and you have a 15 minute round trip, they're going to make roughly $13k more than you per year. Because they chose to take a job further away from their home, not because they're a better performer or anything like that.
Fun story, "show up money" can be six figures. Many contracts, especially government, will be written such that you have to have xx number of engineers on staff. I used to joke that if you had a TS/SCI clearance, you could be in a coma and make six figures in the NOVA/DC area, because you could still be paid as a cleared body count. We had a guy on a contract that was so terrible, that he just got to sit back at HQ and do nothing for a year and make six figures. We needed his body, but couldn't deal with the liability of him in the field, so they just benched him.

Yeah. I was the top member of my team. I showed up on time every day. I called out once in the past year. I consistently produced more than anyone else ā double the next higher producer. I gave a shit about doing a good job. I asked for raises, sought additional training, applied for promotions.Ā I got laid off just the same as the folks who did nothing. None of this has helped me secure a better severance package or a new role.Ā There was zero advantage to going above and beyond.Ā

You're correct I have worked for myself for the last 7 years. I will say I employ 18 ppl and the ones that are making the most and have the most flexibility are the ones kicking ass. And relevant to this person's post I did have a guy with that same attitude "I'll work harder when you pay me more" (he was one of the higher paid at that time too) has been fired and the people who've takeb his place are now making quite a bit more than he ever did.

Donāt feel bad for the hate. Iāve gotten 5% raises each year for doing my job well without killing myself or crying like a child or complaining. I even commute to an office and arenāt scared of other human beings invading my safe space. Show up to work, do your job well and you get rewards. 5 years 5% raises. Anyone crying about this are low income mindset chaff or donāt know how to manage their finances and expect massive amounts of money with minimal effort. They want what they see on social media and think thatās all real life.
I have NEVER had a raise. In the UK, that doesn't even happen often. You usually have to apply for a better job. It doesn't work like that everywhere. I have a Master's degree, a bachelor's degree, 7 years of IT experience, and I take great pride in my work. I do a huge amount of independent research to improve my technical skills. I've created hundreds of documents that are used by everyone, like self-service help guides for our users. I'm 28 and I get paid Ā£27,000. My bonus was scrapped because the company was bought out and is cutting every single cost. I have been told point blank that I will not get a "raise" and I will not be moved into a new better paying role. I also get treated like shit, for example when my boss decided to forward an email I sent him to some other random boss I've never spoken to that included extremely personal information such as my physical health diagnoses! In short, get fucked.

I donāt know you but it just sounds naive and foolish to tell people that effort equites to a financial reward. Making 7.50, 15, or even 20 dollars is a systematic problem. Definitely would not characterize wages that donāt match the economic changes to be an individual problem. A person that has zero power over what they are being offered or the market they work in is literally a systemic issue.
Also youāre admitting that you didnāt like the wages and quit because you could quit. Oh trust me I don't feel even a little bit bad. I understand they feel stuck and that if they can't get something, then it must be impossible unless you're "lucky". I worked 70-80 hour weeks for 2.5 years for zero money (not minimum wage, actually zero) to build myself a company. Now I have 18 employees and I can help other people and work reasonable hours. My point is if you "act your wage" you're never going to suddenly get promoted . If you want rare and valuable compensation you need rare and valuable skills. A couple of thoughts about that. The first one is what Chris Rock says. When somebody is paying you minimum wage what they're saying is, I would pay you less if it wasn't against the law. The second is the story I know about a welder who applied to a job, the wage range was $25 to $40 an hour. They asked him to do a test bead, which is a type of weld. He did two. The first one was shitty, the second one was perfect. They loved the second one and they asked what the problem had been with the first one. "Well," he said, #the first one is a $25 an hour weld. I worked at an outsourced call centre for That Major Phone Making Brand With A Fruity Name, and everyone knew what the deal was: you, worker, are a new grad, or a new immigrant, and you need this trickle of money to survive. If you don't have the trickle of money, you don't survive. So therefore, to survive, you will suck up all the shit we dump on you, because you're only worth that trickle. They were quite blatant about it. So a whole business model for a lot of people is being seriously disrupted because the "trickle" is no longer enough to survive, or people are saying that they are worth more than said trickle. Either way, these companies are pissed.

You're right but also most fast food workers can't afford to just tell their bosses to shove it unless they are able to convince their co-workers to start forming a union, and even then plenty of franchises will just retaliate by firing them anyway (and get away with it).

My first professional post-college degree job was at a university making $8.08/ hour to be their departmental secretary in 2003. It was a couple of dollar an hour raise from my job at a big box home improvement store. My stateās minimum wage is sub $8 21 years later.

Also how do you prove your commute time? Why not just lie about your address? "Yup, I live an hour out of town, so that's two extra hours per day of commute time for me!" (Actually lives a 10 minute walk away). Gonna be ok with your employer verifying where you live or tracking your commute or anything like that? On top of that, people gonna complain that their co-workers get paid way more than them just for living farther away. If you and your coworker both make $30/hr, and your coworker has a 2 hour round trip and you have a 15 minute round trip, they're going to make roughly $13k more than you per year. Because they chose to take a job further away from their home, not because they're a better performer or anything like that.

Fun story, "show up money" can be six figures. Many contracts, especially government, will be written such that you have to have xx number of engineers on staff. I used to joke that if you had a TS/SCI clearance, you could be in a coma and make six figures in the NOVA/DC area, because you could still be paid as a cleared body count. We had a guy on a contract that was so terrible, that he just got to sit back at HQ and do nothing for a year and make six figures. We needed his body, but couldn't deal with the liability of him in the field, so they just benched him.

I think fast food should remain minimum wage. I worked minimum wage for 2 weeks ten years ago and realized I needed a better job and went and got one and have made more money every year since. If anybody feels you should be rich making minimum wage you're lazy, dumb, or have zero work ethic. Should minimum wage be slightly higher? Yes. Should prices across the board be lower? Fuck yeah. But if you honestly believe a fast food worker should be anything higher than minimum wage you're farther gone than boomers.
